A study on prediction of whipping effect of very large container ship considering multiple sea states

  • In the design stage of the very large container ships, some methodologies for the whipping effects have been developed, but most of them are based on single sea state. We developed a methodology that considers multiple sea states. Fluid-structure Interaction (FSI) analyses with one dimensional structural model were carried out to capture slamming-induced transient whipping behaviors. Because of the nature of random phases of the applied wave spectra, the required period for entire FSI analyses was determined from the convergence study where the whipping effect became stable. Low pass filtering was applied to the transient whipping responses to obtain the hull girder bending moment processes. Peak counting method for the filtered whipping responses was used to obtain collection of the vertical bending moment peaks. The whipping effect from this new method is compared with that from based on single sea state approach. The efficiency and advantage of the new methodology are presented.

  • The purpose of the development of KC-1 LNG cargo containment system is reduction in royalty and increase in competitiveness of shipbuilding industry. An assessment of structure safety for LNG cargo containment system under sloshing load due to ship motion has become an important design element. The ideal way is to implement fully interaction of the fluid domain and the cargo containment system. However the irregular sloshing pressure were idealized in the form of a triangular wave for safety assessment because the fluid- structure interaction analysis is taken the extensive computation time and difficult to ensure the accuracy of the results. In this study, the sloshing load was assumed to be a triangular wave with a maximum pressure of 10 bar during 15/1000 seconds. In the analytic results, the basic insulation panel of KC-1 LNG cargo containment system was assessed to be structurally safe for sloshing load.

Structural Variation of Methane/Air Premixed Flame Caused by the Intervention of Ultrasonic Standing-wave (정상 초음파장의 간섭에 의한 메탄/공기 예혼합화염의 구조 변이)

  • An experimental study has been conducted to scrutinize into the influence of ultrasonic standing wave field on the variation of methane/air premixed flame structure. Visualization technique utilizing the Schlieren method is employed for the observation of premixed flame propagation. The shape of flame front and local flame velocity are measured according to the variation of reactants pressure and chamber opening/closing condition. The flame fronts affected by the standing wave are clearly distorted but the vertical locations of frontal dents do not undergo any appreciable change. The influence of standing wave on the flame front becomes more prominent as the flame propagates downward. It is found that the propagation velocity of flame front with excitation of standing wave is greater than the case without the excitation. It is eventually revealed that the flame is deformed to lotus-shaped one by the vivid interaction of ultrasonic standing-wave with the reflected wave coming from the right side.

Numerical Analysis of the Subscale Blast Door Deformation and the Subsequent Blast Wave Propagation through the Tunnel by the External Explosion (외부 폭발에 의한 축소형 방폭문 변형 및 터널 내부 폭풍파 전파 거동의 수치해석)

  • In this paper, we present the results of the numerical analysis employing CONWEP, LS-DYNA FSI(Fluid Structure Interaction), AUTODYN FSI, LS-DYNA ALE(Arbitrary Lagrange Eulerian) and combination of CONWEP and LS-DYNA ALE for blast door fracture and wave propagation through the tunnel by the external explosion. We compared the numerical analysis results with the subscale test data and selected combination of CONWEP and LS-DYNA ALE method as adequate data generation method for the FRM(Fast Running Model) software development. It is expected to save much time and costs by using the numerical simulation data for the various test conditions.

Numerical study on the hydrodynamic characteristics of a propeller operating beneath a free surface

  • The results of a numerical study on the performance of a propeller operating near a free surface are presented. The numerical simulations were performed for the various advance coefficients and the submergence depths of the model propeller. The effects of the model propeller size were investigated using two different model propeller sizes for all cases. The wave pattern of the free surface and the flow structure around the propeller as well as the hydrodynamic characteristics of the propeller were investigated through simulation results. The thrust and torque fluctuated and the trajectory of the tip vortex was distorted due to the interaction with the free surface. The wave pattern of the free surface was related to the tip vortex of the propeller. The decreases in thrust and torque at the small model propeller were greater than those of the large model propeller. The reduction rate of the thrust and torque increased with the advance coefficient.

  • in the present paper, the hydrodynamics properties of a Rahmen type flexible porous breakwater interacting with obliquely or normally incident small amplitude waves are numerically investigated. This system is composed of dual vertical porous membranes hinged at th side edges of a submerged horizontal membrane. The dual vertical membranes are extended downward and hinged at seabed. The effects of permeability, Rahmen type membrane breakwater geometry pre-tensions on membranes, relative dimensionless wave number, and incident Wave headings are thoroughly examined.

  • The finite element technique incorporating infinite elements is applied to analyzing the general three dimensional wave-structure interaction problems within the limits of linear wave theory. The hydrodynamic farces are assumed to be inertially dominated, and viscous effects are neglected. In order to analyze the corresponding boundary value problems efficiently, two types of elements are developed. One is the infinite element for modeling the radiation condition at infinity, and the other is the fictitious bottom boundary element for the case of deep water. To validate those elements, numerical analyses are performed for several floating structures. Comparisons with the results from culler available solution methods show that the present method incorporating tile infinite and the fictitious bottom boundary elements gives good results.

  • We introduce a scheme with a maximized efficiency of detecting atoms passing through an optical standing-wave mode cavity. Consider a standing-wave optical cavity illuminated by a weak probe beam through one of its mirrors where the transmission through the other mirror is monitored by a photodetector. If an atom is put in the cavity, the atom-cavity coupling shifts the resonance frequency of the system via the so-called normal mode splitting, and thereby the transmission power will drop. In fact, this type of atom detection scheme has been used in recent single atom trap experiments In practice, however, the field in a standing-wave mode will have a geometrical structure having nodes and antinodes that when the atom traverses the cavity through one of the nodes, there will be no such effect of atom-field interaction.   • The subsidence characteristics of artificial reef in the unsteady flow such as tidal flow were investigated. The scour and subsidence characteristics were confirmed in the steady flow field, wave field and steady flow-wave field. In a main study, the interaction of Flow-Sediment Movement-Structure Behavior and scour.subsidence mechanism were discussed in the unsteady flow field and the unsteady flow-wave field. Most of all, the continuous artificial reef subsidence from the scour was occurred by periodic behavior of artificial reef. This behavior is result from the asymmetric ground, and is influenced by maximum velocity, duration time and direction of flow.

  • The aim of this study is to survey the effects of laying drainage layer in sandy beach on beach stabilization. At first, the numerical model developed by Hur and Lee (2007), which is able to consider the flow through a porous medium with inertia, laminar and turbulent resistance terms, i.e. simulate directly WAve Structure Seabed/Sandy beach interaction and can determine the eddy viscosity with LES turbulent model in 3-D wave field (LES-WASS-3D), is validated by comparing with existing experimental data. And then, numerical simulation is carried out to examine the characteristics of wave-sandy beach interaction for a beach with/without drainage layer. From the numerical results, it is shown that mean ground-water level around a foreshore decreases and offshore-ward flow over a seabed reduces in case of a beach with drainage layer. Moreover, the effects of cross profile of drainage layer and incident wave condition on mean ground-water level around a foreshore are also discussed as well the distribution of wave setup around the foreshore.
