  • The Karman boundary-layer has been numerically investigated for the disturbance wave number, wave velocity, azimuth angle and radius (Reynolds number, Re). The disturbed flow over rotating disk can lead to transition at a much lower Re than that of the well-known Type I instability. This early transition is due to the excitation of the Type II. Presented are the neutral stability results concerning these instabilities by solving newly formulated stability equations with consideration of whole convective terms. When the present numerical results are compared with the previously known results, the value of critical Re corresponding to Type I is moved from ${Re}_{c.1}$=285.3 to 270.2 and the value corresponding to Type II from ${Re}_{c.2}$=69.4 to 36.9, respectively. Also, the corresponding wave number is moved fro)m $k_1$=0.378 to 0.386 for Type I; from $k_2$=0.279 to 0.385 for Type II. For Type II, the upped limit of wave number and azimuth angle is $k_u$=0.5872, $\varepsilon_u$=$-17.5^{\circ}$, while its lower limit is near $k_u$=0, $\varepsilon_u$=$-28.4^{\circ}$. This implies that the disturbances will be relatively fast amplified at small Re and within narrow bands of wave number compared with the previous results.

  • The Karman boundary-layer, has been numerically investigated for the disturbance wave number, wave velocity, azimuth angle and radius (Reynolds number, Re). The disturbed flow over rotating disk can lead to transition at a much lower Re than that of the well-known Type 1 mode of instability. This early transition is due to the excitation of the Type II mode. Presented are the neutral stability results concerning these modes by solving new formulated vorticity equations with consideration of whole convective terms. When the present numerical results are compared with the previously known results, the value of critical Re corresponding to Type I is moved from Rec,! =285.3 to 270.2 and the value corresponding to Type II is from $Re_{c,2}$=69.4 to 36.9, respectively. Also, the corresponding wave number is moved from $k_1$ =0.378 to $k_1$ =0.389 for Type I; from $k_2$ =0.279 to $k_2$=0.385 for Type II. For Type II, the upper limit of wave number and azimuth angle is $k_U$=0.5872,$varepsilon_U=-18^{\circ}$ , while its lower limit is$k_L$ =0.05, $varepsilon_L=-27^{\circ}$ This implies that the disturbances will be relatively fast amplified at small Re and within narrow bands of wave number compared with the previous results.

  • To develop cardiovascular simulator capable of implementing pulse waves similar to the human body, accurate information about reflection wave is required. However, the conclusion is still not clear and various discussions are underway. In this study, the pulse wave velocity of the tube used in the experiment was first determined by measuring the pressure waves at two points in a single tube system with the experimental device to implement the pulse wave transmission of blood vessels, and the superposition time and characteristics of the reflection wave were confirmed. After that, an air chamber was set at the reflection site, and the effect of the change of air volume on the reflection wave was investigated. Finally, the effect of the number of branches connected to a single tube on the reflection wave was investigated. The superposition time of the reflection wave can be controlled by the air volume of the air chamber, and the magnitude of the reflection wave is influenced by the number of reflection sites that generate the reflection wave. The results of this study may be of practical assistance to simulator researchers who want to implement pulse wave similar to clinical data. It is expected that the more results similar to clinical are provided, the greater the scope of the simulator's contribution to clinical cardiovascular research.

  • Direct numerical simulation database of an axial turbulent boundary layer is used to compute frequency and wave number spectra of the wall shear-stress fluctuations in a low-Reynolds number axial turbulent boundary layer. One-dimensional and two-dimensional power spectra of flow variables are calculated and compared. At low wave numbers and frequencies, the power of streamwise shear stress is larger than that of spanwise shear stress, while the powers of both stresses are almost the same at high wave numbers and frequencies. The frequency/streamwise wave number spectra of the wall flow variables show that large-scale fluctuations to the ms value is largest for the streamwise shear stress, while that of small-scale fluctuations to the rms value is largest for pressure. In the two-point auto-correlations, negative correlation occurs in streamwise separations for pressure and spanwise shear stress, and in spanwise correlation for both shear stresses.

  • The present study aims to review the wave pattern resistance analysis method suggested by the International Towing Tank Conference. From the experimental database of a container carrier ship model, the wave pattern measurement and resistance test results are utilized. The wave pattern resistance at the design Froude number is obtained to be compared with the wave making resistance of experiments. Wave pattern resistance is lower than wave making resistance by 1978 ITTC and uniform regardless of transverse location of wave cut. The method is also applied to the wave height field by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analyses with Froude number variation. Although numerical damping suppressed waves in downstream, waves around the hull and wave pattern resistance are properly predicted.

  • new bearing concept, the wave journal bearing, has been developed to improve the static and dynamic performances of an air-lubricated hydrodynamic journal bearing. This concept features waves on bearing surface. In this study, we present the solution of the compressible Reynolds equation valid for arbitrary Knudsen numbers. Straight wave journal bearing is investigated numerically. The performances of straight wave bearing are compared to the plain journal bearing over relatively wide range of bearing number and eccentricity. The wave journal bearing offers better stability than the plain journal bearing under a13 bearing numbers covered in this study. The bearing load and stability characteristics are dependent on the geometric parameters such as the amplitude and the starting point of the wave relative to the applied load. Under the condition of Knudsen number)0.01, we can not ignore the effect of slip for journal bearing.

  • A sudden discharge of mass flow from the exit of a duct can generate an impulsive wave, generally leading to undesirable noise and vibration problems. The present study develops an understanding of unsteady flow physics with regard to the impulsive wave discharged from a duct, using a numerical method. A second order total variation diminishing scheme is employed to solve three-dimensional, unsteady, compressible Euler equations. Computations are performed for several exit conditions with and without ground and wall effects under a change in the Mach number of an initial shock wave from 1.1 to 1.5. The results obtained show that the directivity and magnitude of the impulsive wave discharged from the duct are significantly influenced by the initial shock Mach number and by the presence of the ground and walls.

  • The safety and stability of 5MW class offshore wind turbine Jack-up platform was investigated through ocean basin experiment. For simulating the environmental condition of yellow sea in the South Korea, diverse waves, winds and currents were performed based on Froude's number. Regular wave and irregular wave based on Froude's number were applied to the wind turbine structure. In experiments, the height and period of regular wave type were scaled down as the 1:50 ratio of real wave condition. Irregular wave type was simulated with TMA(Texel Storm, Marsen and Arsloe)spectrum. The vertical reaction force, resonance period and wave pressure applied to multi-supporters of wind offshore structure were measured experimentally. Finally, the results showed that the capsizing situation of the offshore structure was generated by the severe environmental condition.

  • Shipwaves am have harmful effects on ships working on the sea, in a harbour or navigational channel and caused beach erosion, seawall destruction. This study aims to investigate describe the characteristics of the wave pattern generated by an individual model ship tested at different velocities and hull forms for a given water depth and to investigate the variations at a given distance from the sailing line under the same conditions. As a result, the angles a's by model ship tests are smaller than those by real ship ones. Wave heights decreases with an increasing the mid-ship cross sectional area $A_s$. The maximum wave height and period increase rapidly in the subcritical speed, and beyond the critical speed the height and period decrease with increasing depth Froude number. And the period keeps constant with the distance from the sailing line.
