This thesis deals with a method to solve a two-and-one-half-dimensional ($2\frac12$ D) problem, which means that the ocean environment is two-dimensional whereas the source is fully three-dimensionally propagating, including three-dimensional refraction phenomena and three-dimensional back-scattering, using two-dimensional two-way parabolic equation method combined with Fourier synthesis. Two dimensional two-way parabolic equation method uses Galerkin's method for depth and Crank-Nicolson method and alternating direction for range and provides a solution available to range-dependent problem with wave-field back-scattered from discontinuous interface. Since wavenumber, k, is the function of depth and vertical or horizontal range, we can reduce a dimension of three-dimensional Helmholtz equation by Fourier transforming in the range direction. Thus transformed two-dimensional Helmholtz equation is solved through two-way parabolic equation method. Finally, we can have the $2\frac12$ D solution by inverse Fourier transformation of the spectral solution gained from in the last step. Numerical simulation has been carried out for a canonical ocean environment with stair-step bottom in order to test its accuracy using the present analysis. With this spectral parabolic equation method, we have examined three-dimensional acoustic propagation properties in a specified site in the Korean Straits.

Memristor devices are one of the most promising candidate approaches to next-generation memory technologies. Memristive switching phenomena usually rely on repeated electrical resistive switching between non-volatile resistance states in an active material under the application of an electrical stimulus, such as a voltage or current. Recent reports have explored the use of variety of external operating parameters, such as the modulation of an applied magnetic field, temperature, or illumination conditions to activate changes in the memristive switching behaviors. Among these possible choices of signal controlling factors of memristor, photon is particularly attractive because photonic signals are not only easier to reach directly over long distances than electrical signal, but they also efficiently manage the interactions between logic devices without any signal interference. Furthermore, due to the inherent wave characteristics of photons, the facile manipulation of the light ray enables incident light angle controlled memristive switching. So that, in the tautological sense, device orienting position with regard to a photon source determines the occurrence of memristive switching as well. To demonstrate this position controlled memory device functionality, we have fabricated a metal-semiconductor-metal memristive switching nanodevice using ZnO nanorods. Superhydrophobicity employed in this memristor gives rise to illumination direction selectivity as an extra controlling parameter which is important feature in emerging. When light irradiates from a point source in water to the surface treated device, refraction of light ray takes place at the water/air interface because of the optical density differences in two media (water/air). When incident light travels through a higher refractive index medium (water; n=1.33) to lower one (air; n=1), a total reflection occurs for incidence angles over the critical value. Thus, when we watch the submerged NW arrays at the view angles over the critical angle, a mirror-like surface is observed due to the presence of air pocket layer. From this processes, the reversible switching characteristics were verified by modulating the light incident angle between the resistor and memristor.
The incompletion of TIR (Total Internal Reflection) in FTIR (Frustrated Total Internal Reflection) touch screen has been investigated as follows. Assuming a 3 layer thin film of medium1 ($n_1$)-medium2 ($n_2$)-medium3 ($n_3$) with refraction indices of $n_1=n_3{\neq}n_2$, it was theoretically proven that FTIR or OT (ordinary transmission) phenomena might happen through medium2 from medium1 to medium3 relying on relative difference in $n_1(=n_3)$ and $n_2$, and that the formulae for FTIR and OT could be transformed into each other depending on the number state (imaginary or real) of the light wave phase. In parallel to the theoretical analysis, the incompletion of TIR in acrylate due to external contacts was also elucidated from the experimental and phenomenological viewpoints. On the basis of this considerate work, we explained how to improve the touching performance for better FTIR touch screen.

The GPS positioning involves not only 'natural' errors associated with the satellites position errors, refraction of EM wave in the ionosphere, etc., but also 'artificial' errors associated with the operation of S/A (Selective Availability). In this paper, we present the principles, accuracies and applicabilities of our personal DGPS method, which employs the position-correction method on the GPS positionings data collected at the reference and the remote sites. The essential requirement of our DGPS method is that two GPS receivers should utilize the identical Navstar satellites at the same time. The positioning error (1 drms) of the stand-alone GPS is of an order of a few tens meters, while that of horizontal position by our DGPS method is about 1m and that of vertical position is about 2m We applied out DGPS technique in positioning moving objects, and obtained satisfactory results in tracking the trajectories of a car on the road and the those of drifters in the sea.

Many indoor location tracking technologies have been proposed. Generally indoor location tracking using TOA signal is used, there is a weak point that it's difficult to track the location due to obstacles like a refraction, reflection and dispersion of radio wave. In this paper, we apply ETOA(Estimated-TOA) algorithm in NLOS(Non-Line-Of-Sight) environment to solve above problem. In NLOS environment, TOA value between Beacon and Mobile node is predicted by ETOA algorithm and the tracking of indoor location is also possible to identify using two NLOS beacons of three beacons by this algorithm. We show that the proposed algorithm is accurate location tracking is accomplished using the applying the proposed algorithm to indoor moving robot and the inertia sensor of robot and Kalman filter algorithm.

Based on the dispersive feature of the dielectric function of noble metals and the wave vector conservation in physics, both the plasma effect and the complex refractive index, which are profoundly correlated to the complex dielectric function and permeability, have been studied and analyzed. The condition to induce a bulk or a surface plasma in the visible region will not be satisfied, and there will be one solution for the real and the imaginary parts of the refractive index, restricting it only to region I of the complex plane. The results given in this work will aid in understanding the properties of light transmission at the metal/dielectric interface as characterized by the law of refraction in nature.

In this paper, the performance of the selective combining according to the channel selection decision method of frequency diversity is evaluated in the underwater frequency selective channel. The underwater acoustic channel in the shallow sea has a complex multipath characteristic by combining various environmental factors such as boundary surface reflection and sound wave refraction according to the water temperature layer. In particular, frequency selectivity due to multipath causes energy fluctuation in a communication channel, which reduces SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) and deteriorates communication performance. In this paper, we applied the frequency diversity technique using multiple channels to secure the communication performance according to the frequency selectivity by multipath. For each channel, 4-FSK (Frequency Shift Keying) and selective combining were applied, the performance was evaluated by applying the maximum value, average value, and majority decision of the signal in order to decide the demodulation channel selection of the selective combining.
A set of field investigations was performed to estimate accurately the predominant periods of seismic 8round motions and the attenuation characteristics of the seismic ground vibration. Predominant periods of ground motions were estimated from the measurement of the continuous microseismic vibratins of certain periods, inherent in the ground and in the buildings, utilizing the high sensitivity digital velocity seismometer consisting of 3-component geophones and a digital seismograph. Estimated predominant periods of microseismic vibraion of the ground(measured on'the ground surface) and the building (measured on the second floor) were in the range of 0.18~0.235 sec. and 0.26~0.31 sec. respectively. The subsurface structure of the site ground was surveyed by the seismic refraction method utilizing the digital seismicwave probing system. The ground structure was found to be a two-layered system : an upper top soil layer of 7m in thickness with the P-wave velocity of 662m1sec and a lower layer of silty-clayey soils with the P -wave velocity of 2210m1 sec. The attenuation characteristics of the seismic ground vibrations were determined by the amplitude decay measurement method us;ng the Seisgun, which produces strong artificial seismic energy. Measured spatial attenuation coefficients of the ground vibration in vertical(Z) longitudinal(X), transverse(Y) direction were 0.1137, 0.0025, and 0.0290 respectively. Estimated Spartial QP's (inverse of the specific dissipation constant w.r.t. shear waved of X, Y, and Z directions were in the range of 5.913~7.575, 32.371~41.452, 2.794~3.579 re spectively. This indicates that aseimic design of the structures on the site should take stronger consideration regarding the earthquake resistance characteristics of the structures against longitudinal ground motion.

In order to investigate the velocity structure of the southern part of the Korean peninsula, exploded seismic signals were recorded for 120 s along a 294-km WNW-ESE line and 150 s along a 335-km NNW-SSE line in 2002 and 2004, respectively. Velocity tomograms were derived from inverting first arrival times. One-dimensional velocity models derived by joint analyses of teleseismic receiver functions and surface wave dispersion at several stations near the profiles were uesd to build initial models. The raypaths indicate several midcrust interfaces including ones at approximate depths of 2.0 and 14.9 km with refraction velocities of approximately 6.0 and 7.1 km/s, respectively. The deepest significant interface varies in depth from 30.8 km to 36.1 km. The critically refracting velocity varies from 7.8 to 8.1 km/s along this interface which may correspond to the Moho discontinuity. The velocity tomograms show (1) existence of a low-velocity zone centered at 6-7 km depth under the Okchon fold belt, (2) extension of the Yeongdon fault down to greater than 10 km, and (3) existence of high-velocity materials under the Gyeongsan basin whose thickness is less than 4.2 km.
To clarify the distribution of joints and fracture zones in the Cheongju granitic mass, we analyzed drill-core and geophysical well-logging data obtained at two boreholes located 30 m from each other. Lithological properties were investigated from the drill-core data and the samples were classified based on the rock mass rating (RMR) and on rock quality designation (RQD). Subsurface discontinuities within soft and hard rocks were examined by geophysical well-logging and cross-hole seismic tomography. The velocity structures constructed from seismic tomography are well correlated with the profile of bedrock depth, previously mapped from a seismic refraction survey. Dynamic elastic moduli, obtained from full waveform sonic and ${\gamma}-{\gamma}$ logging, were interrelated with P-wave velocities to investigate the dynamic properties of the rock mass. Compared with the correlation graph between elastic moduli and velocities for hard rock at borehole BH-1, the correlation points for BH-2 data showed a wide scatter. These scattered points reflect the greater abundance of joints and fractures near borehole BH-2. This interpretation is supported by observations by acoustic televiewer (ATV) and optical televiewer (OTV) image loggings.
