The second harmonic, wavelength is 397nm, of the continuous wave diode laser, whose maximum power is 35mW, was generated in $LiIO_3$ crystals in a ring enhancement cavity. 5mm- and 10mm-long crystals cut $43.21^{\circ}$ for optic axis were used in this experiment. Both surfaces of those were anti-reflection coated for 794nm. In case the crystal was inserted into the cavity, the condition of separation between two concave mirrors for the optimum mode matching was found. The conversion efficiency of second harmonic generation was increased by the resonant enhancement of pumping power in the ring enhancement cavity, and the frequency of diode laser was locked to that of the counter-propagation mode generated from the surface of crystal. When the pumping power was 28 mW, the infrared buildup factor was about 45 without the crystal, and 14 with the crystal due to the transmission loss of crystal. The maximum second harmonic powers of $1.5{\mu}W$ and $6.6{\mu}W$ were obtained, and corresponding conversion efficiencies were $(6.584{\pm}0.56){\times}10^{-3}$%, $2.6{\pm}0.21){\times}10%{-2}$% in 5mm- and 10mm-long $LiIO_3$, respectively.
It has been reported high concentrations of zinc and taurine in ocular tissue, especially the retina-choroid, and the presence of physiological levels of zinc and taurine in these tissues seem essential for their normal function. In addition, several studies have reported temperature as another effector to the visual sensitivity. But, in spite of many studies, there are still remained many questions about their function and correlation in visual adaptation system. The purpose of present study was to clarify these points using electroretinogram(ERG) recording and absorption spectra scanning, before and after zinc and taurine treatments and hypothermic-effect in bullfrog(Rana catesbeiana) which is one of the poikilothermal animal. The optimal zinc concentration used in this study was determined $10^{-4}M$ while the optimal taurine concentration was 10-5 M, and temperature change for hypothermic-effect went through '$25^{\circ}C {\rightarrow}0^{\circ}C{\rightarrow}25^{\circ}C$'. In ERG recording, it is obtained that dark-adapted threshold became elevated and b-wave amplitudes was increased with zinc and taurine treatment and hypothermic-effect. In absorption spectra scanning, there is distinct absorbance increment over the whole spectral range(400~750 nm) after zinc and taurine treatment and hypothermic-effect. Furthermore there are some synergism effects between zinc and taurine as well as between zinc and hypothermic-effect as a result of co-treatment, respectively.

In this paper, three kinds of beam coupling losses which occur in a quasi-optics circuit for millimeter wave receiver system have been intensively investigated. First, the beam coupling losses which are caused by mismatch of beam waists radii and their positions between those of one and the other have been evaluated. It shows that beam coupling losses due to mismatch of beam waists radii and their positions between two quasi-optics circuits can be minimized if beam waist radius is chosen as larger than 3 times the operation wavelength. Second, the beam coupling losses have been studied when the axis of propagation of one beam is tilted with respect to that of the other beam. It is noted that smaller beam waist radius results in greater tolerance to tilts and angular misalignments. Third, the beam coupling cases in which two beams are offset if their axes of propagation are parallel but one is displaced relative to the other have been investigated. It is confirmed that beam waists radii with larger than 3 times operation wavelength are less sensitive to lateral offsets.

The entire process, from the raw material to the final system qualification test, has been developed to fabricate a large-diameter, lightweight reflective-telescope system for a satellite observation. The telescope with 3 anastigmatic mirrors has an aperture of 700 mm and a total mass of 66 kg. We baked a silicon carbide substrate body from a carbon preform using a reaction sintering method, and tested the structural and chemical properties, surface conditions, and crystal structure of the body. We developed the polishing and coating methods considering the mechanical and chemical properties of the silicon carbide (SiC) body, and we utilized a chemical-vapor-deposition method to deposit a dense SiC thin film more than 170 ㎛ thick on the mirror's surface, to preserve a highly reflective surface with excellent optical performance. After we made the SiC mirrors, we measured the wave-front error for various optical fields by assembling and aligning three mirrors and support structures. We conducted major space-environment tests for the components and final assembly by temperature-cycling tests and vibration-shock tests, in accordance with the qualifications for the space and launch environment. We confirmed that the final telescope achieves all of the target performance criteria.

A method of calculation fur propagating and focusing of focused beams generated in antenna arrays, using BPM(Beam Propagation Method), is presented in this paper. Based on the diffraction theory, the beam focusing and Propagation is studied specially for the case of the antenna way fed by the Rotman lens that is able to focus microwave power on its focal arc or generate multiple beams. There are difficulties in performing a full-wave simulation using a commercial EM simulation tool for propagating and focusing of beams because of the structural complexity and the feeding assignment of the antenna array. Therefore, as an alternative solution, the BPM is presented to calculate the beam propagation from the aperture-type antennas. From the point of view of optics, the propagations of the lens have been simplified from the Fresnel diffraction integral to the Fourier transform. Using Fourier Transform, a beam propagation method is developed to show improvement of the resolution by controlling the wavefront of wave Propagating from an aperture-type antenna array. The beam width(or spot size) and the intensity are calculated for a focused beam propagating from an array having $10\lambda$ of its size. For the beams with $20\lambda,\;30\lambda$, and $50\lambda$ of geometrical focal length, the half-power beam widths(or spot size) are about 1.1\lambda,\;1.3\lambda,\;and\;1.9\lambda$ respectively.

We have developed a mode-locked ultra-short pulse C $r^{4+}$:YAG laser, as well as a continuous wave C $r^{4+}$:YAG laser. The laser was pumped by a Nd:YAG laser and its characteristics were investigated. In continuous wave mode, we obtained as much as 600 mW at 1.436 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with pumping power of 6 W, by using an output coupler with a reflectivity of 98%. The power slope efficiency was 10%, when the gain medium was cooled to 19$^{\circ}C$. The tuning range was varied from 1.39 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 1.55 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and the maximum power was 400 mW at 1.492 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with a 3-plate birefringent filter. The C $r^{4+}$:YAG laser was mode-locked by a Kerr lens mode locking method. Mode locking at 1.436 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$was initiated by slightly rocking a mirror mount. But the pulses were very unstable because of the strong water absorption at this region. So we shifted the lasing wavelength to 1.492 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ by using a 3-plate birefringent filter. Then we obtained stable state mode-locking with the maximum average power of 280 mW for a pumping power of 6 W. The pulse width of 43 fs was measured using an autocorrelator and the repetition rate was 104.5 MHz.
Fracture roughness of rock specimens is observed by a new confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM; Olympus OLS1100). The wave length of laser is 488 nm, and the laser scanning is managed by a light polarization method using two galvano-meter scanner mirrors. The function of laser reflection auto-focusing enables us to measure line data fast and precisely. The system improves resolution in the light axis (namely z) direction because of the confocal optics. Using the CLSM, it is Possible to measure a specimen of the size up to $10{\;}{\times}{\;}10{\;}cm$ which is fixed on a specially designed stage. A sampling is managed in a spacing $2.5{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$ along x and y directions. The highest measurement resolution of z direction is $10{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$, which is more accurate than other methods. Core specimens of coarse and fine grained granite are provided. Fractures are artificially maneuvered by a Brazilian test method. Measurements are performed along three scan lines on each fracture surface. The measured data are represented as 2-D and 3-D digital images showing detailed features of roughness. Line profiles of the coarse granites represent more frequent change of undulation than those of the fine granite. Spectral analyses by the fast Fourier transform (FFT) are performed to characterize the roughness data quantitatively and to identify influential frequency of roughness. The FFT results suggest that a specimen loaded by large and low frequency energy tends to have high values of undulation change and large wave length of fracture roughness.

We report high-power continuous-wave operation of a Yb-doped fiber laser at 1070 nm, pumped by high-power laser diodes at 976 nm. Based on theoretical calculation of the stimulated Raman scattering and temperature distribution in the fiber, we construct a bidirectionally pumped Yb-fiberlaser system incorporating a pair of fiber Bragg gratings and a cladding light stripper. The fiber laser yields 3.0 kW of continuous-wave output at 1070 nm in a diffraction-limited beam with M2 ≈ 1.26 for 4.1 kW of incident pump power, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 81.5%. The prospects for further power scaling are discussed.

High-power continuous-wave operation of a Yb-doped double-clad fiber laser at 1018 nm, pumped by high-power diode lasers at 976 nm, is reported. Based on numerical calculation of the gain and laser signal power along the length of the Yb fiber, it is found that robust operation at 1018 nm can be achieved for a high Yb3+-ion excitation density greater than 11.5%, accompanied by high suppression of the feedback from the fiber's end facet. The Yb fiber laser constructed in house yields 626 W of continuous-wave output at 1018 nm for 729 W of incident pump power, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 86.6%. The prospect for power scaling is considered.
In this study we introduce a new method for high-spatial-resolution continuous wave (CW) aerosol lidar that has a high spatial resolution in the near field and a low spatial resolution at long distances. A normal lidar system uses a nanosecond-pulse laser and measures the round-trip TOF between the aerosol and laser to obtain range resolution. In this study, however, we propose a new type of spatially resolving aerosol lidar that uses laser-scattering images. Using a laser-light-scattering image, we have calculated the distance of each scattering aerosol image for a given pixel, and recovered the short-range aerosol extinction. For this purpose, we have calculated the distance image and the contribution range of the aerosol to the given one-pixel image, and finally we have calculated the extinction coefficients of the aerosol with range-resolved information. In the case of traditional aerosol lidar, we can only obtain the aerosol extinction coefficients above 400 m. Using our suggested method, it was possible to extend the range of the extinction coefficient lower then several tens of meters. Finally, we can remove the unknown short-range region of pulsed aerosol lidar using our method.
