For the prediction on the onset of oblique shock wave-induced vortex breakdown, computational studies on the Oblique Shock wave/Vortex Interaction (OSVI) are conducted and compared with both experimental results and analytic mode1. A Shock-stable numerical scheme, the Roe scheme with Mach number-based function (RoeM), and a two-equation eddy viscosity-transport approach arc used for three-dimensional turbulent flow computations. The computational configuration is identical to available experiment, and we attempt to ascertain the effect of parameters such as a vortex strength, streamwise velocity deficit, and shock strength at a freestream Mach number of 2.49. Numerical simulations using the k-w SST turbulence model and suitably modeled vortex profiles are able to accurately reproduce many fine features through a direct comparison with experimental observations. The present computational approach to determine the criterion on the onset of oblique shock wave-induced vortex breakdown is found to be in good agreement with both the experimental result and the analytic prediction.

A three-dimensional numerical model is employed to investigate wave deformation due to a submerged structure. The three-dimensional numerical model solves the spatially averaged Navier-Stokes equations for two-phase flows. The LES(large-eddy-simulation) approach is adopted to model the turbulence effect by using the Smagorinsky SGS(sub-grid scale) closure model. The two-step projection method is employed in the numerical solutions, aided by the Bi-CGSTAB technique to solve the pressure Poisson equation for the filtered pressure field. The second-order accurate VOF(volume-of-fluid) method is used to track the distorted and broken free surface. A simple linear wave is generated on a constant depth and compared with analytical solutions. The model is then applied to study wave deformation due to a submerged structure and the predicted results are compared with available laboratory measurements.

In this study, the coupled-numerical model has been newly developed to investigate numerically scouring and deposition around a coastal structure like a submerged breakwater using a numerical wave model and a lagrangian particle model for sand transport. As a numerical wave model, LES-WASS-2D (Hur and Choi, 2008) is adopted. The model is able to consider the flow through a porous midium with inertial, laminar and turbulent resistance term and determine the eddy viscosity with LES turbulence model. Distinct element method (Cundall and Strack, 1979), which is able to apply to many dynamical analysis of particulate media, as a lagrangian particle model for sand transport is newly coupled to the numerical wave model. The numerical simulation has been carried out to examine the scour problem in front of an impermeable submerged breakwater using the newly coupled-numerical model. The numerical results has been compared qualitatively with an existing experimental data and then its applicability has been discussed.

In this study, CFD is used to compare and analyze the flow characteristics using reflected pressure wave during the intersection of two trains in straight tunnel. Two tunnels of different lengths; 600 m and 3,400 m were designed and numerical analysis of the flow characteristics of two tunnels carried out by setting the crossing state of the two trains at a constant velocity of 27 m/s form the center of the tunnel. The simulation model was designed using the actual tunnel and subway dimensions The train motion was achieved by using the moving mesh method. For the numerical analysis, $k-{\omega}$ standard turbulence model and an ideal gas were used to set the flow conditions of three-dimensional, compressible and unsteady state. In the analysis results, it was observed that the inside of the long tunnel without interference of the reflected pressure wave was maintained at a pressure lower than the atmospheric pressure and that the flow direction was determined by the pressure gradient and shear flow. On the other hand, the flow velocity in the short tunnel was faster and the pressure fluctuation was noted to have increased due to the reflected pressure wave, with more vortices formed. In addition, the flow velocity was noted to have changed more irregularly.

Various types of flow conditions are developed in the region just downstream of hydraulic structures such as weir and drop structures. One of distinct flow conditions occurred downstream of drop structures is the wave type flow with undular hydraulic jump formation. We present three-dimensional numerical simulations of a wave type flow formed downstream of a stepped weir which were experimentally investigated by Kang et al. (2010). The turbulent flow over the weir structure is modeling using the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) simulation employing the Spalart-Allmaras one equation model and the detached eddy simulation. Numerical modeling and the performance of turbulence modeling approaches are evaluated by comparing with the experimental measurements in terms of the free surface variation, the shapes and sizes of undular wave, roller near at free surface, recirculation zone near the channel bottom downstream of the structures, and streamwise velocity profiles at selected longitudinal locations.

This paper presents numerical results comparing the performance of the 2008 Wilcox $\mathcal{k}-{\omega}$ turbulence model to the one of the 1988 Wilcox $\mathcal{k}-{\omega}$ model for supersonic flows. A comparison with experimental data is offered for a shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction case and two ramp injector mixing cases. Furthermore, a comparison is performed with empirical correlations on the basis of skin friction for flow over a flat plate and shear layer growth for a free shear layer. It is found that the maximum injectant mass fraction of some ramp injector cases is better predicted using the 1988 Wilcox model. On the other hand, the 2008 model performs better in simulating shock-boundary layer cases.

Accurate estimation of the wave-induced pore water pressure in the seabed is key factor in studying the stability of the seabed in the vicinity of coastal structure. Most of the existing numerical models for wave structure seabed interaction have been linked through applying hybrid numerical technique which is analysis method separating the wave field and seabed regime. Therefore, it is necessary to develope a numerical model f3r simulating accurately wave$\cdot$structure$\cdot$ seabed interaction under wave loadings by the single domain approach for wave field and seabed regime together. In this study, direct numerical simulation is newly proposed. In this model, modeled fluid drag has been used to detect the hydraulic properties according to the varied geometrical shape inside the porous media by considering the turbulence resistance as well as laminar resistance. Contrary to hybrid numerical technique, direct numerical simulation avoids the explicit formulation of the boundary conditions at the fluid/porous media interface. A good agreement has been obtained by the comparison between existed experimental results by hydraulic model test and direct numerical simulation results far wave $\cdot$structure$\cdot$seabed interaction. Therefore, the newly proposed numerical model is a powerful tool for estimating the nonlinear dynamic responses among a structure, its seabed foundation and water waves.
Effects of the reduced frequency of upstream wake on downstream unsteady boundary layer flow were simulated by using a Wavier-Stokes code. The Wavier-Stokes code is based on an unstructured finite volume method and uses a low Reynolds number turbulence model to close the momentum equations. The geometry used in this paper is the MIT flapping foil experimental set-up and the reduced frequency of the upstream wake is varied in the range of 0.91 to 10.86 to study its effect on the unsteady boundary layer flow. Numerical solutions show that they can be divided into two categories. One is so called the low frequency solution, and behaves quite similar to a Stokes layer. Its characteristics is found to be quite similar to those due to either a temporal or spatial wave. The low frequency solutions are observed clearly when the reduced frequency is smaller than 3.26. The other one is the high frequency solution. It is observed for the reduced frequency larger than 7.24. It shows a sudden shift of the phase angle of the unsteady velocity around the edge of the boundary layer. The shift of phase angle is about 180 degree, and leads to separation of the boundary layer flow from corresponding outer flow. The high frequency solution shows the characteristics of a temporal wave whose wave length is half of the upstream frequency. This characteristics of the high frequency solution is found to be caused by the strong interaction between unsteady vortices. This strong interaction also leads to destroy of the upstream wake strips inside the viscous sublayer as well as the buffer layer.

Numerical simulations are performed of a long flexible cylinder undergoing vortex-induced vibration at a Reynolds number of 500. The cylinder is pinned at both ends, having an aspect ratio of 100 (cylinder length to cylinder diameter) and a mass ratio of 4.2 (structural mass to displaced fluid mass). Temporal and spatial information on the cross-flow (CF) and in-line (IL) vibrations is extracted. High modal vibrations up to the $6^{th}$ in the CF direction and the $11^{th}$ in the IL direction are observed. Both the CF and IL vibrations feature a multi-mode mixed pattern. Mode competition is observed. The $2^{nd}$ mode with a low frequency dominates the IL vibration and its existence is attributed to a wave group propagating back and forth along the span. Distributions of fluid force coefficients are correlated to those of the CF and IL vibrations along the span. Histograms of the x'-y motion phase difference are evaluated from the total simulation time and a complete vibration cycle representing the standing or travelling wave pattern. Correlations between the phase difference and the vibrations are discussed. Vortex structures behind the cylinder show an interwoven near-wake pattern when the standing wave pattern dominates, but an oblique near-wake pattern when the travelling wave pattern prevails.

The present paper studies the effect of the slope gradient of a fully permeable submerged breakwater using a newly developed numerical model that is able to consider the flow through a porous midium with inertial, laminar and turbulent resistance terms, i.e. simulate directly WAve-Structure (submerged breakwater)-Sand seabed interaction and can determine the eddy viscosity with LES turbulence model in 2-Dimensional wave field (LES-WASS-2D). The developed model was validated through the comparison with an existing experimental data, and further used for various numerical experiments in oder to investigate the complicated hydrodynamics on the varying slope gradient of permeable submerged breakwater. We found an acceptable phenomenon, as we expect intuitively, that reflection and transmission coefficients decrease simultaneously as slope gradient decrease. In addition, the breaking point, the circulation flow and mean vorticity around a submerged breakwater are throughly discussed.
