  • We report a pull-up type RF MEMS switch using double electrode without elastic deformation of the cantilever involved in the actuation. At a voltage of 4.5 V, reliable actuations are achieved such that the movable lower contact pad is pulled up by the electrostatic force to make contact with the upper pad. At a frequency of 50 GHz, an insertion loss of 0.7 dB and an isolation of 50.7 dB are obtained from the switch. The measured transient times for switch-on and switch-off are 120 and 80 us, respectively.

  • The main external force of the harbor in east coast is wave. So, wave is the important cause of wave induced current and sediment transport due to wave in planning harbor structures. Therefore, it must be considered not only to secure the harbor tranquility but also the sediment transport due to wave induced current in planning the harbor. In this study, we studied on the influences of construction procedure on harbor tranquility and siltation using annual coastal line data and bathymetry data near breakwater. And it suggests that the construction procedure for the harbor tranquility and the best way for the decrease of harbor siltation.

  • In this paper, an Energy Flow Analysis (EFA) for coplanar coupled Mindlin plates was performed to estimate their dynamic responses at high frequencies. Mindlin plate theory can consider the effects of shear distortion and rotatory inertia, which are very important at high frequencies. For EFA for coplanar coupled Mindlin plates, the wave transmission and reflection relationship for progressing out-of-plane waves (out-of-plane shear wave, bending dominant flexural wave, and shear dominant flexural wave) in coplanar coupled Mindlin plates was newly derived. To verify the validity of the EFA results, numerical analyses were performed for various cases where coplanar coupled Mindlin plates are excited by a harmonic point force, and the energy flow solutions for coplanar coupled Mindlin plates were compared with the classical solutions in the various conditions.

  • In the present study, an offshore platform having large partial porous cylindrical members, which are composed of permeable and impermeable cylinders, is suggested. In order to calculate the wave force on large partial porous cylindrical members, the fluid domain is divided into three regions: a single exterior region, N inner regions and N beneath regions, and the scattering wave in each fluid region is expressed by an Eigen-function expansion method. Applying Darcy's law to the porous boundary condition, the effect of porosity is simplified. Wave excitation forces and wave run up on the structures are presented for various wave conditions. For the idealized three-dimensional platform having large partial porous cylindrical members, the dynamic response evaluations of the platform due to wave forces are carried out through the modal analysis. In order to examine the effects of soil-structure interaction, the substructure method is also applied. The displacement and bending stress at the selective nodal points of the structure are computed using various input parameters, such as the shear-wave velocity of soil, the wave height and the wave period. Applying the Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) method, the reliability evaluations at critical structure members, which contained uncertainties caused by dynamic forces and structural properties, are examined by the reliability index with the results obtained from MCS.

  • A model experiment with a scale of 1:150 has been conducted to investigate the dynamic responses of a freestanding four-column bridge tower subjected to regular wave, random wave and coupled wave-current actions. The base shear forces of the caisson foundation and the dynamic behaviors of the superstructure were measured and analyzed. The comparisons of the test values with the theoretical values shows that wave-induced base shear forces on the bridge caisson foundation can be approximated by using a wave force calculation method in which the structure is assumed to be fixed and rigid. Although the mean square errors of the base shear forces excited by joint random wave and current actions are approximately equal to those excited by pure random waves, the existence of a forward current increases the forward base shear forces and decreases the backward base shear forces. The tower top displacements excited by wave-currents are similar to those excited by waves, suggesting that a current does not significantly affect the dynamic responses of the superstructure of the bridge tower. The experiment results can be used as a reference for similar engineering design.

  • A high-intensity ultrasound wave generates acoustic streaming and acoustic radiation forces when propagating through a medium. An acoustic radiation force generated in a three-dimensional space can produce a solid tactile sensation, delivering spatial information directly to the human skin. We placed 154 ultrasound transmit elements with a frequency of 40 kHz on a concave circular dish, and generated an acoustic radiation force at the focal point by transmitting the ultrasound wave. To feel the tactile sensation better, the transmit elements were excited by sine waves whose amplitude was modulated by a 60 Hz square wave. As an application of ultrasonic tactile sensing, a region where tactile sense is formed in the air is used as an indicator for the position of the hand. We confirmed the utility of ultrasonic tactile feedback by implementing a system that provides the number of fingers to a machine by receiving the shape of the hand at the focal point where the tactile sense is detected.

  • Salt cementation, a typical naturally-cemented phenomenon, may occur due to water evaporation under the change of climate. Capillary force may influence the distribution of cement in granular soils. This study addresses the effect of capillary force on salt cementation using five different techniques: cone penetration test, electrical conductivity measurement, photographic imaging technique, nondestructive imaging technique, and process monitoring by elastic wave. Glass beads modeling a particulate media was mixed with salt water and then dried in an oven to create the cementation condition. Experimental results show that salt cementation highly concentrates at the top of the small particle size specimens and at the middle or the bottom of the large particle specimens. The predicted capillary heights are similar to the locations of high salt concentration in the cemented specimens. Five suggested methods show that the behavior of salt-cemented granular media heavily depends on the capillary force.

  • Numerical analysis of slope stability is presented using slice method, static seismic analysis methods, and earthquake response analysis methods. Static seismic force is considered as 0.2g while vertical static seismic force is not considered in analysis. For earthquake response analysis, Hachinohe-wave is applied. Safety factor calculated using slice method for failure surface. Calculating methods are Bishop's method and Janhu's method. Static seismic analysis was applied using Mhor-Coulomb model and earthquake response analysis was applied using non-linear elastic model.
