Understanding the penetration behavior of the spilled oil is very important to remove itself and to minimize its impact on intertidal biological communities by earlier treatment of the oil. The purpose of this study is to clarify the effects of wave and tidal actions on the penetration of spilled oil and to evaluate main factors of oil penetration using a sandy-beach model. Infiltration processes into the sediments showed significant difference between seawater and crude oil. Seawater was infiltrated by both wave action and tidal fluctuation into the sediments in sandy beach. However, spilled crude oil penetrated into the sediments only by falling tides and not by wave action, and the first tide is most important for the penetration of stranded oil. Over 70% of bulk fraction in penetrated crude oil was concentrated to the top 2 cm sediment-layer when spilled oil volume was 1 L/$\textrm{m}^2$. Moreover, the penetration of stranded oil into the sandy beach sediments was strongly correlated with the oil viscosity affected by temperature.

Numerical study on interactions of waves and currents has considerable practical interests in coastal and ocean engineering. And wave-current interactions strongly influence wave characteristics, current profiles, and forces on offshore structures. Presence of currents affects wave properties such as wave height and wave profiles. Furthermore, in case of the irregular waves, it is more complicated problem. The propose of present study, using the one-dimensional wave-current numerical model is based on the extended Boussinesq equation(Madsen, 1991) and an alternative form of wave-current dispersion relation(Mohiuddin, 1999, 2000) including wave action concept, is to simulate wave propagation in a current field including the irregular waves and discuss applicability of the model in a wave-current field.
Detailed investigations were carried out on the stability of the dredged soil bed against wave actions, aimedat establishing the design method of artificial tidal flats using dredged soil. The soil was dredged at Nagoya port, Japan, and has a mean grain size of 0.013mm. Basic features of artificial dredged soil bed against wave actions were explained from a series of model experiments in a wave flume. The two types of section shapes were employed; one is a horizontal bed and the other is a sloped one. Changes of the bed profile, shear strength, grain size distribution and water content, according to the wave actions, were measured in detail. The cumulative effect of the wave actions, over about one week, was investigated. A dredged soil bed moves withthe wave actions with relatively small wave height. It should be especially. noted that the clay component is dissolved and flown out, away from the surface layer, and consequently the surface layer hardens, as if it is covered with sand. Wren the wave height is gradually increased, the bed is not liquefied and the shear strength of the dredged bed is increased by a wave-induced dissipation of pore pressures in the bed and a decrease of clay component by the wave-induced leakage.
This study conducted numerical simulations using LES-WASS-3D ver. 2.0 to analyze the seawater intrusion characteristics of the incident waves in a coastal aquifer. LES-WASS-3D directly analyzed the nonlinear interaction between the seawater and freshwater in a coastal aquifer, as well as the wave-current interaction in the coastal area. First, the LES-WASS-3D results were compared with the existing experimental results for the mean water level under wave action in the coastal aquifer and seawater penetration into the coastal aquifer. The mean water level, shape and position of the seawater-freshwater interface, and intrusion distance were well implemented in the results. This confirmed the validity and effectiveness of LES-WASS-3D. The overall seawater penetration distance increases in the coastal aquifer as a result of wave set-up and run-up in the swash zone caused by continuous wave actions, and it increases with the wave height and period. Furthermore, a numerical verification was performed by comparing the suggested existing structure and newly suggested curtain wall as a measure against seawater penetration. An existing underground dam showed a better effect with increased height. Additionally, the suggested curtain wall had a better effect when the embedded depth was increased.
Not only South Korea but also Global world show that the frequency and damages of large-scale natural disaster due to the rise of heavy rain event and typhoon or hurricane intensity are increasing. Natural disasters such as typhoon, flood, heavy rain, strong wind, wind wave, tidal wave, tide, heavy snow, drought, earthquake, yellow dust and so on, are difficult to estimate the scale of damage and spot. Also, there are many difficulties to take action because natural disasters don't appear precursor phenomena However, if scale of damage can be estimated, damages would be mitigated through the initial damage action. In the present study, therefore, wind wave damage estimation functions for the western coastal zone are developed based on annual disaster reports which were published by the Ministry of Public Safety and Security. The wind wave damage estimation functions were distinguished by regional groups and facilities and NRMSE (Normalized Root Mean Square Error) was analyzed from 1.94% to 26.07%. The damage could be mitigated if scale of damage can be estimated through developed functions and the proper response is taken.
It was investigated whether $Ca^{2+}$ and $K^+$ channels were involved in the inhibitory action of nitric oxide (NO) on the contractile and slow wave activity of guinea pig gastric antral circular muscle. The gastric antral circular muscle showed spontaneous phasic contraction and slow wave. NO donors, 3-morpholinosydnonimine hydrochloride (SIN-1, $0.01{\sim}100{\mu}M$) and S-nitroso-L-cysteine (CysNO, $0.001{\sim}10{\mu}M$), reduced not only the amplitude of phasic contraction but also that of slow wave in a concentration-dependent manner. Both the perfusion of $Ca^{2+}$-free solution and the administration of $Ni^{2+}$, a nonselective $Ca^{2+}$ channel blocker, reduced the phasic contraction as well as the amplitude and frequency of the slow wave. The effects of these treatments were similar to those of NO donors. Nifedipine ($10{\mu}M$), a specific L-type $Ca^{2+}$ channel blocker, abolished the phasic contraction and remarkably reduced the plateau of slow wave but had no profound effect on the upstroke of slow wave. In the whole-cell patch clamp mode, CysNO shifted the steady-state activation curve for L-type $Ca^{2+}$ current to the right and the steady-state inactivation curve to the left. Pretreatment of various $K^+$ channel blockers such as tetraethylammonium (1 mM), 4-aminopyridine (0.5 mM), glibenclamide (10 mM), apamin ($0.1{\mu}M$), and iberiotoxin ($0.1{\mu}M$) did not affect the inhibitory action of SIN-1. These results suggest that NO donors suppress mechanical and electrical activity of guinea pig gastric antral circular muscle by inhibition of L-type $Ca^{2+}$ channel rather than by activation of $K^+$ channels.
Many researches have been done to define the physical parameters for the wave generation and transformation over a coastal region. However, most of these have been limited to the application of particular conditions, as they are generally too empirical. To yield more reasonable wave estimation using a spectral wave model, it is important to understand how they work for the wave estimation. This study involved a comprehensive sensitivity test against the spectral resolution and the physical source/sink terms of the spectral wave model using SWAN and TOMAWAC, which have the same physical background with several different empirical/theoretical formulations. The tests were conducted for the East Anglian coast, UK, which is characterized by a complex bathymetry due to several shoals and offshore sandbanks. For the quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the models' performance with different input conditions, the wave elements and spectrums predicted at representative sites the East Anglia coast were compared/analyzed. The spectral resolution had no significant effect on the model results, but the lowest resolution on the frequency and direction induced underestimations of the wave height and period. The bottom friction and depth-induced breaking terms produced relatively high variations in the wave prediction, depending on which formulation was applied. The terms for the quadruplet and whitecapping had little effect on the wave estimation, whereas the triads tended to predict shorter and higher waves by energy transferring to higher frequencies.

As a railway train enters a tunnel at high speed, a compression wave is formed in front of the train and propagates along the tunnel. The compression wave subsequently emerges from the exit of the tunnel, which causes an impulsive noise. The impulsive noise is closely related to the pressure gradient of the compression wave propagating the tunnel. In order to investigate the characteristics of the compression waves, in the present study an experiment was made using a shock tube. The results show that the strength of a compression wave decreases with the distance from the tunnel entrance and the nonlinear effect of compression wave appears to be significant if strength of the initial compression wave is greater than 7 kPa. Furthermore if the wave pattern is known, attenuation of the compression wave propagating in a tunnel can be reasonably predicted by a theoretical equation considering viscous action and heat transfer in boundary layer.
Recently, as the status of South Korean popular culture has risen, the Korean Wave is gaining popularity not only in Asia but also in Europe, America, and South America, and is currently at the center of the global cultural phenomena. Among them, in particular, the cultural content industry has been developing rapidly thanks to the Korean Wave. Currently, the Korean Wave is spreading all over the world while bringing about positive effects to South Korea. In fact, until 2017, political and social issues such as 'North Korea/North Korean nuclear weapons' and 'Korean War' were considered as the images associated with South Korea, but from 2018, it has been shown that all images associated with South Korea are cultural content except for 'IT industry'. Given the economic effects that can be obtained not only from the positive associated images of South Korea per se but also from the complex action with various industries in South Korea, the craze for the Korean Wave can be viewed as affecting the overall national prestige of South Korea. For the steady vogue of the Korean Wave, thorough investigation of the Korean Wave and understanding of the expectations of consumers of the Korean Wave seem to be necessary
Centrifuge modeling and numerical analysis on works of breakwater construction were performed to investigate the behavior of caisson type of breakwater and foundation treated with the method of DCM (Deep Cement Mixing) under the condition of wave action in field. In centrifuge modeling, construction sequence of breakwater caisson such as preparation of ground, treatment of DCM, installation of rubble mound, placement of breakwater caisson and lateral loading on the breakwater due to wave action were reconstructed. Lateral movement of model breakwater and ground reaction in the vertical direction were monitored during test. Stress concentration ratio between the untreated ground and the treated ground with DCM was evaluated from measurement of vertical stresses on each ground. Numerical analysis with the software of PLAXIS was carried to compare with Results of centrifuge model test. It was found that stability of model breakwater was maintained during stage of construction and the compared results about stress concentration ratio were in relatively good agreements.
