Wave-current interaction due to strong ambient currents causes to alter wave properties such as wave height, wave profile and wave spectrum. In this study we first examined the SWAN model's applicability by comparing with an analytical solution of Suh et al. (1994) for wave-current interaction in finite water-depth. Numerical experiments using SWAN model have been conducted for Garolim Bay to estimate the design waveheights influenced by strong tidal currents. For the design wave periods of 8~10 sec, the design wave height of 3 m in NNW direction was increased by up to 40% when the incident waves encounter the opposing currents of 1.4 m/s while the wave height was reduced by 26% due to the following currents of 1.1 m at the bay mouth. This result indicates that the effect of wave-current interaction must be included to determine the design wave height if there exists a strong current.

As the economic matters are involved, applying the WEC, which is used for controlling waves as well as utilizing the wave energy on existing breakwater, is preferred rather than installing exclusive WEC. This study examines the OWC mounted on a pressurized air chamber floating breakwater regarding the functionality of both breakwater and wave-power generation. In order to verify the performance as a WEC, the velocity of air flow from pressurized air chamber to WEC has to be evaluated properly. Therefore, numerical simulation was implemented based on BEM from linear velocity potential theory as well as Boyle's law with the state equation to analyze pressurized air flow. The validity of the obtained values can be determined by comparing the previous results from numerical analysis and empirically obtained values of different shapes. In the actual numerical analysis, properties of wave deformation around OWC system mounted on fixed type and floating type breakwaters, motions of the structure with air flow velocities are investigated. Since, the wind power generating system can be hybridized on the structure, it is expected to be applied on complex power generation system which generates both wind and wave power energy.
This paper aims to investigate morphological changes of deltaic barrier islands in the Nakdong Estuary and especially their spatial variations after barrage construction. We analyzed shorelines, geometrical centroids, and areas to reveal the changes of barrier islands. Here, we suggest three interesting points from this study. First, each individual barrier island in the Nakdong estuary goes through a different stage of the geomorphic cycle. The frontal barrier islands such as Sinja-do and Doyo-deung grow because they are located in front of the gates of the barrage. Sediments in water out of the gates are moved to offshore and then reworked by coastal processes such as waves and tides. Second, on the contrary, Baekhap-deung located behind Doyo-deung now diminishes indicating that sediments mainly move to the frontal growing island. Third, there is no morphological change in several barrier islands far away from the main flow of the Nakdong river such as Jinwoo-do, Daema-deung, and Jangja-do. In conclusion, barrier islands in the Nakdong estuary show distinct spatial variations. As a barrier island is closer to the main channel or is in the frontal location, there happens a very dynamic change in the morphology of the island.

As transportation systems for connecting lands and islands, oversea long-span bridges, underwater tunnels, and immersed tunnels have been mainly used so far. Submerged floating tunnels (SFTs) moored under specific water depth are one of the newest oversea transportation system. Compared to other existing systems, the new system requires relatively less construction cost and time. But, there is still no construction example. For reasonable design of the tunnel and mooring lines the rational structural analysis should be firstly performed. Unlike common transportation structures, the submerged tunnels are mainly affected by the wave, vary irregular excitation component. So, the analysis scheme might be difficult because of the characteristics of the submerged structures. This study aims to suggest the rational global performance analysis methodology for the submerged tunnels. Using ABAQUS the dynamic response of the experimental models studied by KIOST (2013) was investigated considering regular waves. By comparing the simulation results with the experimental results, the feasibility of the numerical simulation was verified. Using the suggested method, the effects of initial inclination of the tethers and draft of the tunnel on the dynamic behavior were studied. In addition, dynamic response of a SFT under the irregular wave was examined.

A set of equations for description of transformation of harmonic waves is proposed here. Velocity potential function and separation of variables are introduced for the derivation. The continuity equation is in a vertical plane is integrated through the water so that a horizontal one-dimensional wave equation is produced. The new equation composed of the complex velocity potential function, further be modified into. A set up of equations composed of the wave amplitude and wave phase gradient. The horizontally one-dimensional equations on the wave amplitude and wave phase gradient are the first and second-order ordinary differential equations. They are solved in a one-way marching manner starting from a side where boundary values are supplied, i.e. the wave amplitude, the wave amplitude gradient, and the wave phase gradient. Simple spatially-centered finite difference schemes are adopted for the present set of equations. The equations set is applied to three test cases, Booij's inclined plane slope profile, Massel's smooth bed profile, and Bragg's wavy bed profile. The present equations set is satisfactorily verified against existing theories including Massel's modified mild-slope equation, Berkhoff's mild-slope equation, and the full linear equation.

An analytical solution of dynamic responses for seabed in shallow, finite and infinite thicknesses has been developed under flow and standing wave coexisting field at a constant water depth condition. To do this, based on the Biot's consolidation theory, the seabed is assumed as a porous elastic media with the assumptions that pore fluid is compressible and Darcy law governs the flow. The developed analytical solution is compared with the previous results and is verified. Using the analytical solution the deformation, pore pressure, effective and shear stresses of seabed are examined under various given values of flow velocity, incident wave period and seabed thickness. From this study, it is confirmed that the seabed response is quite different depending on consideration of flow, which causes changing period and length of incident and reflection waves.

The wave-impact load on offshore structures can be divided into green-water and wave-slamming impact loads. These wave impact loads are known to have strong nonlinear characteristics. Although the wave impact loads are dealt with in the current classification rules in the shipping industry, their strong nonlinear characteristics are not considered in detail. Therefore, to investigate these characteristics, wave-impact loads induced by a breaking wave on a circular cylinder were analyzed. A model test was carried out to measure the wave-impact loads due to breaking waves in a two-dimensional (2D) wave tank. To generate a breaking wave, the focusing wave method was applied. A series of 2D tank tests under a horizontal wave impact was carried out to investigate the structural responses of the cylindrical structure, which were obtained from the measured model test data. According to the results, we proposed a structural damage-estimation procedure of an offshore tubular member due to a wave impact load. Furthermore, a recommended wave-impact load is suggested that considers the minimum required thickness of each member. From the experimental results, we found that the required minimum thickness is dependent on the impact pressure located in a three-dimensional space on the surface of a tubular member.
The aim of this study is to check the application criteria of the conventional techniques and clarify the effects of breaker depth, seabed conditions on the stability in relation to the effects of uncertainty of storm duration and directional irregular waves. The typical damage modes were divided by the direct wave force on the armor unit and by the local scouring around the toe of a breakwater head by the model experiments. The destruction modes are defined, and some criteria on the damage modes and scouring/deposition at the toe of a breakwater head in relating the wave-bottom-structural conditions can be checked using the multi-directonal irregular wave generator system. According to the results, it is emphasized that the 3-D effects on the stability should be analyzed in the design of multi-purpose/function coastal structures in consideration of the evaluation of spatial variation of damage modes and hydraulic characteristics as well as the wave distribution along the structures.
We have examined the applicability of f-k analysis to the GPR direct wave measurement for water content to characterize vadose zone condition. When the vadose zone consists of a dry surface layer over wet substratum, we obtained f-k spectra where most of the energy is bounded by the air and dry soil velocities. In this case, dry soil velocity was successfully estimated by using high frequency data. On the other hands, when wet soil overlies dry substratum, the f-k spectra show a contrasting response where most of the energy travels with the velocity bounded by dry and wet soil velocities. In this case, the radar waves are trapped and guided within wet soil layer, exhibiting velocity dispersion. By adopting modal propagation theory, we could formulae a simple inversion code to find two layer's dielectric constants as well as layer thickness. By inverting the velocity dispersion curve obtained from f-k spectra of synthetic modeling data, we could obtain good estimates of dielectric constants of each layer as well as first layer thickness. Moreover, we could obtain more accurate results by including the higher mode data. We expect this method will be useful to get the quantitative property of real subsurface when the field condition is similar.

The effects of free surface and a strut on the lifting characteristics on a fin attached at the mid-chord of the strut are investigated experimentally in a circulating water channel. Variation of lift force on the fin is investigated with respect to free stream velocity(V), angle of attack of the fin(${\alpha}$) and ratio of the submergence depth of the fin to the chord of the fin(H/C). Attentions are focused on the lifting characteristics of the fin at shallow depths of submergence. Visualization of the free surface deformation along the strut and of the streamline about the fin is made in order to examine the inflow angle to the fin. Lift force on the fin alone i.e. in absence of the strut is also measured to investigate the difference in lifting characteristics of the fin caused by the strut. The results show that lift forces over the fin are largely affected by a free surface in the case of small submergence ratios(HiC<3.0). For HiC>5.0, the effects of the free surface are negligibly small. The inflow angle to the fin is significantly influenced by the strut and flow speed at the shallow depths of submergence. The deformation of the free surface is largely governed by the waves generated by the strut. However, for small submergence depths, the effects of the fin are found also significant.
