Using a successive removal approach the mechanism of sampling capture efficiency of blue crabs by dredges was studied in Chesapeake Bay during winter 1992. For the twenty-six field experiments no significant statistical differences were detected in dredge efficiency using general linear model analysis by factors including bottom sediments, water depths, and sampling vessels. Dredge efficiency (i.e., catchability) was estimated by two methods, Leslie (Leslie and Davis, 1939) and a simple revised method. Mean catchability was estimated at 0.26 (SE=0.03), indicating that only $26\%$($95\%\;C. I.=20{\sim}32\%$) of crabs present in the path of the dredge of a given sampling area are caught with a single dredge tow. Dredge efficiency declined exponentially as crab density increased.
As hydrological models have been progressively developed, they are recognized as appropriate tools to manage water resources. Especially, the need to evaluate the effects of landuse and climate change on hydrological phenomena has been increased, which requires powerful validation methods for the hydrological models to be employed. As measured streamflow data at many locations may not be available, or include significant errors in application of hydrological models, streamflow data simulated by models only might be used to conduct hydrological analysis. In many cases, reducing errors in model simulations requires a powerful model validation method. In this research, we demonstrated a validation methodology of SWAT model using observed flow in two basins with different physical characteristics. First, we selected two basins, Gap-cheon basin and Yongdam basin located in the Guem River Basin, showing different hydrological characteristics. Next, the methodology developed to estimate parameter values for the Gap-cheon basin was applied for estimating those for the Yongdam basin without calibration a priori, and sought for validation of the SWAT. Application result with SWAT for Yongdam basin showed $R_{eff}$ ranging from 0.49 to 0.85, and $R^{2}$ from 0.49 to 0.84. As well, comparison of predicted flow and measured flow in each subbasin showed reasonable agreement. Furthermore, the model reproduced the whole trends of measured total flow and low flow, though peak flows were rather underestimated. The results of this study suggest that SWAT can be applied for predicting effects of future climate and landuse changes on flow variability in river basins. However, additional studies are recommended to further verify the validity of the mixed method in other river basins.

The groundwater quality through livestock excreta survey based on "Act of the management and use of livestock excreta" was investigated by selecting sampling sites within 1 km of the farmland without considering hydrogeological units. However, these sites can be affected by various pollution sources such as chemical fertilizers and livestock excretions. Additionally, the effects of pollution sources on groundwater quality in the sites cannot be clearly distinguished from naturally occurring backgrounds. In this study, a method was developed to select the sampling sites for groundwater quality through livestock excreta survey in order to understand the effects of pollution sources especially livestock excreta. First, the concentrations of nitrate within the radius of 200 m, 300 m, 500 m and 750 m, respectively, from the farms regarded as pollution sources in hydrogeological units were compared in 2016-2017. All the nitrate concentrations at 200 - 500 m from the farms exceeded a background concentration, 13.3 mg/L. Those at 750 m and the background concentrations measured by the Ministry of Environment were comparable. Therefore, the appropriate radius was suggested as 500 m for livestock excretions survey. In this study, the areas within 500 m from the farms could be considered under the influence of livestock excretions, while those beyond 500 from the pollution sources as background in hydrogeological units. The developed method was validated by applying it to the sites selected based on both administrative divisions and watersheds for livestock excretion survey. The average densities for the developed method were 0.82 and 0.39 points/km2, respectively, which were considered as appropriate levels according to those of the European Environmental Agency.
It is necessary to calculate the accurate velocity from the hydraulic model for the reliable prediction of water quality changes in water supply system. To verify the hydraulic analysis of the water supply system, fluoride was used as a tracer to calculate the travel time from the injection point to the sampling points. Results from this field experiment indicate that fluoride can be a good conservative tracer while it showed a little longitudinal dispersion along the pipe lines. And the velocity from the model was verified by these travel times and calibrated by changing the ratio of the unaccountable water. When the ratio of the unaccountable water. When the ratio of the unaccountable water was 20%, the error between the estimation of hydraulic model and the real travel time was minimum.

By the explosive increase of population and industrialization the security of water resources is required, and water resource pollution problem is emerging as a serious social issue. For the ongoing Saemankeum project, lots of efforts are being put together to manage the water quality of the Saemankeum above a certain level, and it is sure that water quality management problem of main inflows from Mankyung River and Dongjin River is very important. Based upon the water quality data of Mankyung River this report examines its correlative characteristics by water quality sampling point factors and the water pollution resource factors, and subjects to provide elementary data for efficient water quality management of Mankyung River.
This study was performed to investigate the levels of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) in water and rice samples taken from five sites on a stream used for agricultural water in the Jeon-buk area, Korea. The water samples were randomly collected by the recommendations of the World Health Organization, and rice samples were randomly collected from rice paddy. The water and rice samples were analyzed by the recommendations of Food Code of Korea and using inductively coupled plasma spectrometer. Although there was variation between sampling sites, the levels of the metals in rice were on average much higher than those in water. The ratios of metal levels of rice to water were: $8.0{\sim}35.4\;for\;Cd;\;2.2{\sim}7.2\;for\;Cu;\;5.9{\sim}18.3\;for\;Pb;\;and\;10.6{\sim}75.7$ for Zn. These results suggest that there were transfer and bioaccumulation of the metals from the water to the rice taken place.

In this paper, we studied on the sampling of ocean meteorological data to analyze signature of naval ships. The newest ocean meteorological data, that was quality controled by the Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA), was collected. Outliers were removed from the data by setting the usable range of data. After that, the data size was reduced through the random sampling method, taking geopolitical significance and effective area of buoy, for probabilistic analysis. Moreover, the sample sizes were set at 100, 200, and 400 by considering the population size and a 95% confidence level. The final sample was obtained using the two-dimensional stratified sampling method based on highly correlated water temperature and air temperature. The sum of the squared errors and the confidence interval was calculated to compare the result of sampling. As a result, this study proposed reasonable sample size for infrared signature analysis of naval ships.

To investigate major factors controlling variations in water quality, principal component analysis and cluster analysis were used to analyze data sets of 12 parameters measured at 23 sampling stations of Jinhae Bay during winter and spring. Principal component analysis extracted three major factors controlling variations of water quality during winter and spring. In winter, major factors included freshwater input, polluted material input, and biological activity. Whereas in spring they were polluted material input, freshwater input, and suspended material input. The most distinct difference in the controlling factors between winter and spring was that the freshwater input was more important than the polluted material input in winter, but the polluted material input was more important than the freshwater input in spring. Cluster analysis grouped 23 sampling stations into four clusters in winter and five clusters in spring respectively. In winter, the four clusters were A (station 5), B (stations 1, 2), C (station 4), and D (the remaining stations). In spring, the five clusters included A (station 5), B (station 1), C (station 3), D (station 6), and E (the remaining stations). Intensive management of the water quality of Masan and Hangam bays could improve the water quality of Jinhae Bay since the polluted materials were mainly introduced into Jinhae Bay through Masan and Hangam bays.

The aquatic quality of the Naktong river after two or three months in June, 1991 with phenol spillage from a electrical factory in Kumi was investigated. The samples were collected at six sites of the Naktong river basin and Kachang and Kongsan lakes. Phenol was not detected from all water samples. Turbidity was very much increased to the down stream in the Naktong river. The BOD and COD values exceeded the 2nd grade(3mg/l) of the Korean standard quality of Environmenal Water Act at the all sampling sites of the Naktong river. Especially, the value of COD at Kaejin (12.5mg/l) was poorly classified as to the 5th grade of water class for the environmental quality standards. Organophosphorous pesticides such as parathion, malathion, fenitrothion and diazinon were investigated but not detected. Diazinon was only detected at the Ilsan bridge(1.42ppb), Okkye stream(6.95ppb), Waekwan bridge(0.32ppb), Gangjung reservior(0.13ppb), Kaejin (0.05ppb). Of the carbamates such as carbanyl, isoprocarb and cabofuran, the carbofuran was detected all sites except tap water, and Kachang and Kongsan lakes. The content of heavy metals such as Cd, Pb, Zn, Fe, Mn, Hg were not exceeding for drinking water standards at the all sampling region, but only mecury was detected from Okkye stream(0.018ppb) and Kaejin (0.09ppb). In the regions of Kachang and Kongsan lakes, the content of heavy meatals were lower than that of reservior of Naktong river.
This study estimated the error involved in the areal average rainfall derived from incomplete radar information due to radar partial coverage of a basin or sub-basin. This study considers the Han-River Basin as an application example for the rainfall observation using the Ganghwa rain radar. Among the total of 20 mid-sized sub-basins of the Han-River Basin evaluated in this study, only five sub-basins are fully covered by the radar and three are totally uncovered. Remaining 12 sub-basins are partially covered by the radar to result in incomplete radar information available. When only partial radar information is available, the sampling error decreases proportional to the size of the radar coverage, which also varies depending on the number of clusters. Conditioned that the total area coverage remains the same, the sampling error decreases as the number of clusters increases. This study estimated the sampling error of the areal average rainfall of partially-covered mid-sized sub-basins of the Han- River Basin, and the results show that the sampling error could be at least several % to maximum tens % depending on the relative coverage area.
