  • This study was carried out to determine the ways in which drying improves and develops dredged soils which exist widely in the lowlands of Korea. Before drying there were large variations in the fundamental physico-chemical properties of dredged soils collected from different places. In the sample soils, saturated hydraulic conductivity decreased gradually with an increase in bulk density with the exception that in air-dried soils a reverse trend was observed. Also in the sample soils, the sedimentation volume and the consistency limits decreased gradually with the decrease in soil water content after the air-drying treatment. The porosity of the sample soils decreased from $0.67{\sim}0.87m^3/m^3\;to\;0.58{\sim}0.66m^3/m^3$ and the liquid-phase range decreased from $0.41{\sim}0.83m^3/m^3\;to\;0.29{\sim}0.71m^3/m^3$. The solid-phase range of sample soils increased $0.13{\sim}0.33m^3/m^3\;to\;0.24{\sim}0.37m^3/m^3$ same as above with air-drying treatment. In conclusion the air-drying treatment caused an irreversible effect on some physical properties. Accordingly, these facts indicate that the effects of air-drying treatment on these properties are considered to be resulted from irreversible changes in the structural status of the sample soils.

  • To develop a 6061 aluminum alloy with low residual stress and high tensile strength, a cryogenic treatment process was investigated. Compared to the conventional heat treatment process for precipitation hardening with artificial aging, the cryogenic treatment process has two additional steps. The first step is cryogenic quenching of the sample into liquid nitrogen, the second step is up-hill quenching of the sample into boiling water. The residual stress for the sample was measured by the $sin^2{\psi}$ method with X-ray diffraction. The 6061 aluminum alloy sample showed 67% relief in stress at the cryogenic treatment process with artificial aging at $175^{\circ}C$. From this study, it was found that the optimum cryogenic treatment process for a sample with low residual stress and high tensile strength is relatively low cooling speed in the cryogenic quenching step and a very high heating speed in the up-hill quenching step.

  • Tee yields, physical properties and gel formation abilities or hot-water extractable material (HWEM) and water-soluble alginate (WSA) extracted from Laminaria japonica were estimated and compared with those of the alginate (ASA) extracted with alkali solution in the routine procedure. The contents of HWEM, WSA and ASA in Laminaria japonica were 8.3, 2.5 and $19.1\%$, respectively. The HWEM and WSA had no gel formation ability, whereas the ASA had a good gol formation ability. The HWEM and WSA were almost not viscous even in $1.5\%$ of the sample solution, whereas the ASA was very highly viscous in above $0.5\%$ of sample solution. The melting points of $1\%$ solution of HWEM, WSA and ASA sample were 31, 24 and $14^{\circ}C$, respectively. The solubility at melting point of each samples varied from 2.3 to 2.6 g/100 g water, and a few differences were observed.

  • This work was to study the potential use of germinated and microwave-vacuum-dried brown rite as a raw material for enzyme food. Brown rice was soaked in water at $15^{\circ}C$ for 2 days and then germinated at $25^{\circ}C$ for 4 days. The germin ated brown rice was then dried by different drying methods: microwave vacuum drying 1(drying only), microwave vacuum drying 2 $(drying{\rightarrow}crushing{\rightarrow}drying)$, hot air drying, vacuum drying and freeze drying. Each drier except freeze drier was set to maintain the sample temperature to be $60^{\circ}C$. During microwave vacuum drying 1 and 2 the sample reached $60^{\circ}C$ much faster (5 min) and was dried much faster (2 to 3 hrs for microwave vacuum drying 1 and 2 than the other drying methods. The initial drying rate of microwave vacuum drying was ten times faster than that of hot air drying. The microwave vacuum drying produced a dry sample of the highly retained enzymic activity, followed by freeze drying, vacuum drying and hot air drying.

  • Tuberculation and slime accumulated in water mains play an important role in modifying water quality of drinking water. Therefore, in this study, it was investigated that what materials were accumulated, and what components were included in the tuberculation and slime of water mains. The Various tuberculation and slime sample were collected from the 12 water mains to analyze their physical and chemical properties and crystal structure. As a analysis method, VSS(Volatile suspended solid), SEM(scanning electron microscope), EDS(Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscope), ICP(Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer) and XRD(X-Ray Diffractomete) were used. The results of analysis on the samples, the representative materials were verified such as iron corrosion products, the fine sand particles generated during backwash, fine particles of activated carbon, aluminum used in coagulation process, and manganese included in raw water.

  • This study is intended to check the possibility to estimate water content by heat-drying method with variation of W/C and slump. According to the results, in case of electric range method, when water content is less than 165kg/m$^3$ in mixture, it is estimated more and in more than 165kg/m$^3$, it is estimated less. It shows that water content in gas burner method is estimated less by about 2kg/m$^3$. Also, estimated water content shows difference by less than 12kg/m$^3$ in electric range method and by less than 12kg/m$^3$ in gas burner method. Therefore, it is thinked that if tested without error from preparing a sample to calculating amount of water, water content will be estimated exactly in the construction field.

  • The water vapor permeability of polypropylene spun bond non-woven fabrics were investigated with the water vapor permeability velocity at $20^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$ by applying the hygroscopic method. At each temperature 50, 65 and 80 %RH conditions were used. The results indicated that the water vapor permeability velocity increased with increasing the water vapor concentration difference between both sides of sample surfaces and it decreased with increasing the number of the piled-up fabrics and the apparent density.

  • Activity measurement of the primary circuit water of fission reactors is one method that can provide early detection of a damaged fuel assembly in the reactor core. This is an important aspect in the safe operation of the reactor and for radiation protection of staff. Radionuclides in the primary circuit water are produced by the activation of stable nuclides and the fission of fissile nuclides, mainly the isotope 235U. In the LVR-15 research reactor, measurement of the activity of the primary circuit water has been regularly undertaken since 1996. A water sample is taken from the primary circuit every week and the activities are measured four days later using gamma spectrometry. The results of these long-term measurements from 1996 to 2022 are presented. The activity time dependences of the individual radionuclides are discussed in relation to fuel assembly damage and for events connected to contamination of the water by objects inserted into the primary circuit during experiments carried out near the reactor core.

  • This study was conducted to develop a 100 kPa soil tensiometer mainly consisted of a porous ceramic cup, water-holding tube, and a digital vacuum gauge, through theoretical design analysis and experimental performance evaluation. Major findings were as follows. 1. Theoretical analysis showed that air entry value of a porous media decreased as the maximum effective size of the pore increased, and the maximum diameter of the pores was $2.9\;{\mu}m$ for measuring up a 100 kPa of soil-water tension. 2. Property analysis of tensiometer porous cups supplied in Korean domestic market indicated that main components were $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ with a porosity range of $33.8{\sim}49.3%$. 3. The porous cup selected through sample fabrication and air-permeability tests showed weight ratios of 87% and 11% for $Al_2O_3$ and $SiO_2$. The analysis of SEM (scanning electron microscope) images showed that the sample was sintered at temperatures of about $1150^{\circ}C$, which consisted of pores with sizes of up to 25% of those for commercial porous cups. 4. The prototype soil tensiometer was fabricated using the developed porous cup and a digital vacuum gauge that could measure water tension with a pressure of 85 kPa in air tests. 5. In-soil tests of the prototype conducted during a period of 25-day drying showed that soil-water tension values measured with the prototype and commercial units were not significantly different, and soil-water characteristic curves could be established for different soils, confirming accuracy and stability of the prototype.

  • Collection Efficiency of a tritium bubbler being used at domestic nuclear power plants was studied. Equilibrium is attained while tritium vapour in air passes through the bubbler. When a lot of gas sample passes through the bubbler, the tritium concentration of water is raised and volume of water is decreased or increased. These phenomena give effect to the collection efficiency. Estimation of the tritium concentration of the water agreed with our experiments. If relative humidity is higher than 0.5, the efficiency becomes lower than 1 and if relative humidity is lower than 0.5, the efficiency becomes higher than 1, provided collected tritium is evaluated with original volume of the water. Though the relative humidity is riot 0.5, the efficiency can be maintained near 1 by making $\frac{saturated\; water\; vapour(cm^3_w)\times volume \; of \; gas \; sample(cm^3)}{volume\; of\; water(cm^3)}$ small
