A watershed-river linked modeling system was developed to forecast the water quality, particularly weekly changes in chlorophyll-a concentration, of the Yeongsan River, Korea. Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran (HSPF) and Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC) were adopted as the basic model framework. In this study, the EFDC model was modified to effectively simulate the operational condition and flow of multi-functional weirs constructed in the main channel of rivers. The model was tested against hydrologic, water quality and algal data collected at the right upstream sites of two weirs in 2014. The mean absolute errors (MAEs) of the model calibration on the annual variations of river stage, TN, TP, and algal concentration are 0.03 ~ 0.10 m, 0.65 ~ 0.67 mg/L, 0.03 ~ 0.04 mg/L, and $9.7{\sim}10.8mg/m^3$, respectively. On the other hand, the MAE values of forecasting results for chlorophyll-a level at the same sites in 2015 range from 18.7 to $22.4mg/m^3$, which are higher than those of model calibration. The increased errors in forecasting are mainly attributed to the higher uncertainties of weather forecasting data compared to the observed data used in model calibration.

A more accurate understanding of the irrigation water supply is necessary for efficient agricultural water management. Although we measure water levels in an irrigation canal using ultrasonic water level gauges, some errors occur due to malfunctions or the surrounding environment. This study aims to apply CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) Deep-learning-based image classification and segmentation models to the irrigation canal's CCTV (Closed-Circuit Television) images. The CCTV images were acquired from the irrigation canal of the agricultural reservoir in Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon-do. We used the ResNet-50 model for the image classification model and the U-Net model for the image segmentation model. Using the Natural Breaks algorithm, we divided water level data into 2, 4, and 8 groups for image classification models. The classification models of 2, 4, and 8 groups showed the accuracy of 1.000, 0.987, and 0.634, respectively. The image segmentation model showed a Dice score of 0.998 and predicted water levels showed R2 of 0.97 and MAE (Mean Absolute Error) of 0.02 m. The image classification models can be applied to the automatic gate-controller at four divisions of water levels. Also, the image segmentation model results can be applied to the alternative measurement for ultrasonic water gauges. We expect that the results of this study can provide a more scientific and efficient approach for agricultural water management.
This study attempts to estimate the benefits of using water ensuing from the Chilgap multipurpose reservoir for environmental improvement. The contingent valuation method (CVM) was used to elicit the willingness to pay (WTP) for providing environmental improvement water from the Chilgap reservoir to Daechi-stream and Ji-stream. The DCDB (double-bound dichotomous choice) survey method was used to collect data for the analysis. Due to the usually high cost of increasing the sample size, the use of follow-up questions was implemented as an inexpensive method of improving the efficiency of the estimation. A spike model was used in this study because a number of respondents showed zero WTP. The spike model can be estimated as easily as the conventional model. Results show that the average annual household's WTP is 4,516 won using the conventional model and 8,644 won using the spike model. Applying the estimated average annual household's WTP to the Chungnam and Daejeon regional levels, the benefits of environmental improvement water from the Chilgap reservoir is estimated at 11.9 billion won per year. The temporal benefits of providing water for environmental improvement, for a 50-year period at a 6.0% discount rate, is estimated at about 190 billion won in the Chungnam and Daejeon areas. These results could be useful especially when the government tries to determine an appropriate level of investment and to make a policy related to providing environmental improvement water.

The present trend of disposing treated sewage water by allowing it to infiltrate the soil brings a new dimension to environmental problems. It is therefore necessary to identify the chemicals likely to be present in treated sewage water. A soil column experiment was conducted to determine the behavior of chemical species in soil columns applied with secondary treated sewage water. To predict the behavior of chemical species, a multicomponent solute transport model that includes the biochemical redox process and cation exchange process was developed. The model computes changes in concentration over time caused by the processes of advection, dispersion, biochemical reactions and cation exchange reactions. The solute transport model was able to predict the behavior of the different chemical species. The model reproduced the sequential reduction reaction. To design the safe depth of plow layer where $NO_3^-$ is totally reduced, a numerical study of $NO_3^-$ leach was done and it was found out that the pore velocity and concentration of $CH_2O$ at the inject water was found to affect $NO_3^-$ reduction in the mobile pore water phase. It is revealed that the multicomponent solute transport model is useful to design the land treatment system for $NO_3^-$ removal from wastewater.

There have been various studies on measurements of flood risk and forecasting models. For river and dam region, PDF and FVI has been proposed for measurement of flood risk and regression models have been applied for forecasting model. For Bo region unlikely river or dam region, flood risk would unexpectedly increase due to outgoing water to keep water amount under the designated risk level even the drain system could hardly manage the water amount. GFI and general linear model was proposed for flood risk measurement and forecasting model. In this paper, FVI with the consideration of duration on GFI was proposed for flood risk measurement at Bo region. General linear model was applied to the empirical data from Bo region of Nadong river to derive the forecasting model of FVI at three different values of Base High Level, 2m, 2.5m and 3m. The significant predictor variables on the target variable, FVI were as follows: ground water level based on sea level with negative effect, difference between ground altitude of ground water and river level with negative effect, and difference between ground water level and river level after Bo water being filled with positive sign for quantitative variables. And for qualitative variable, effective soil depth and ground soil type were significant for FVI.

Temporal and spatial prediction of water quality provides the necessary information to a profect planning, design, and model optimization for water quality mangement in a river system. In thes study, the QUAL II model is applied to the Keum River system from the downstream of Dae-Chong dam to the Great Pak-Je bridge. The advection-dispersion model of water quality based on the material balance and the numerical solution method of the model are presented. The enhancement of the model application is empha sized by comparing the observed and the simulated values of BOD, DO, and water temperature. Through these processes, the water quality states of the Keum River system are evaluated and the deoxignation rate, the reaeration rate, and Fair value are estimated. Also, the maintance of the target DO level with the control of the discharge from Dae-Chong dam is discussed.

The objective of this study is to develop water saving irrigation method using water balance model in order to save rural water. Daily water balance components such as irrigation water, drainage water, effective rainfall, ET, and infiltration were measured in paddy fields. Model simulations were performed for different outlet heights and ponding depths. The outlet heights and the ponding depths are 2 cm, 4 cm, 6 cm, 8 cm, and 10 cm, respectively. Based on the simulation very shallow ponding depth of 2 cm with 10 cm outlet height showed the largest effective rainfall ratio and the smallest irrigation amount. Until the introduction of laser leveling dozer and automatic inlet control devices, it would be desirable to adopt 4cm ponding depth because of difficulty of land leveling and frequency of farmer's field visit. The results of this study will be applied in the paddy farming and can improve water use efficiency.
Based on the study of soil water dynamics, this study is to suggest an advanced stochastic soil water model for future study for drought application. One distinguishable remark of this study is the derivation of soil water dynamic controling equation for 3-stage loss functions in order to understand the temporal behaviour of soil water with reaction to the precipitation. In terms of modeling, a model with rather simpler structure can be applied to regenerate the key characteristics of soil water behavior, and especially the probabilistic solution of the derived soil water dynamic equation can be helpful to provide better and clearer understanding of soil water behavior. Moreover, this study will be the future cornerstone of applying to more realistic phenomenon such as drought management.
To use chlorine residual as an surrogate parameter of the water quality change during the transportation in the water distribution system(WDS), the correct prediction model of chlorine residual must be established in advance. This paper shows the procedure and the result of applying the water quality model to the field WDS. To begin with, hydraulic model was calibrated and verified using fluoride as an tracer. And chlorine residual was predicted through simulation of water quality model. This predicted value was compared with the observed value. With adjusting the bulk decay coefficient(kb) and the wall decay coefficient(kw) according to the pipewall environment, the predicted chlorine residual can represent the observed value relatively well.
This paper proposes a method to speed up the document image binarization using a water flow model. The proposed method extracts the region of interest (ROI) around characters from a document image and restricts pouring water onto a 3-dimensional terrain surface of an image only within the ROI. The amount of water to be filled into a local valley is determined automatically depending on its depth and slope. Then, the proposed method accumulates weighted water not only on the locally lowest position but also on its neighbors. Finally, the depth of each pond is adaptively thresholded for robust character segmentation. Experimental results on real document images shows that the proposed method has attained good binarization performance as well as remarkably reduced processing time compared with that of the existing method based on a water flow model.
