  • Oceanographic features around Korean waters related to the global change were studied by analysis of the longterm variation of water temperature, dissolved oxygen, sea level of the surface layer with 1$^{\circ}C$ temperature, spatial position of the subpolar front in the East Sea/Japan Sea (the East sea hereafter) and the Wolf Sunspot Number. With the global warming, the temperature of Korean waters has been increased 0.5∼1.0$^{\circ}C$ for 33years (1968∼2000). In case of the dissolved oxygen in the East Sea has been decreased 0.46$m\ell$/$\ell$. Year to year vertical fluctuations of the monthly anomalies of the surface layer with 1$^{\circ}C$water in the East Sea have predominant periods with 15years as the longterm variation of Arctic climate, 12 and 18years as the El Nino-Southern Oscillation. Spatial position of the subpolar front in the East Sea moved to northern part of the sea from the southern part of the sea with the increasing sea surface temperature. The relationship between the number of Wolf Sunspot and the anomalies of sea surface temperature was very closer after the late of 1980s than those before the early of 1980s in Korean waters.

  • Due to severe flooding, the long-term residence of turbidity flows within the stratified Daecheong Reservoir have lengthened. A long-term residence of turbidity flows within the stratified Daecheong Reservoir after floods has been major environmental issue. The objective of this study was to assess the impact to water supply from the hydrodynamics and turbidity outflow. Two gate operation scenarios were investigated. Scenario A refers to gate operations according to rainfall events, and scenario B refers to gate operations according to inflow. From the results of secenario A, the SS concentrations decreased from 0.44mg/l to 0.54mg/l at the front of the dam, whereas SS concentrations increased from 0.24mg/l to 1.24mg/l at the intake points at Munhi and Daejeon. From the results of scenario B, the SS concentrations decreased from 0.61mg/l to 0.83mg/l at the front of Dam; howeve, SS concentrations also decreased from 0.16mg/l to 0.48mg/l at the intake points at Munhi and Daejeon. It seems that it may be more efficient to control turbidity by creating additional outflows of generated discharge after intensive rainfalls than not.

  • According to researchers, the influential factors of scouring are generally divided into three factors: the flow conditions, the type and position of structures, and the characteristics of bed materials. In addition, scouring is affected by the 3-dimensional turbulent boundaries, the unsteady flow, the movement of sediment in the scour-hole area, the approach flow velocity and depth, the width of bridge foundation/pier, and the particle size of bed materials. However, it is difficult to estimate the scour depth near bridge piers when all conditions are factored in at once. Therefore, for reasonably accurate estimates of scour depth, it is essential to consider sufficiently the flow force and resisting force for scour. That is, to determine the shear stress concerning the bed material distribution is needed. In this study, the experiments were performed under the condition of a steady state of flow. As a result, scouring occurred at velocity ratios of 0.476,$(V/V_c=0.476)$, and the scour depth was increased linearly as the velocity ratio increased. in addition, the average values of shear stress ratio at zero scouring depth in both rectangular and circular piers were approximately 7$(\tau_c/\tau_{approach})$ and in the case for same size bed particle material. The results of this study can be used for the fundamental material for estimating the scour depth of bed materials.

  • Slope failure depends upon the climatic features related to related rainfall, structural geology and geomorphological features as well as the variation of the mechanical behaviors of soil constituting a slope. In this paper, among many variables, effects of soil layer thickness on the slope failure process, and variations of matric suction and volumetric water content were observed. When the soil layer is relatively thick, the descending wetting front decreases matric suction and the observed matric suction reaches to "0" value. When the wetting front reaches to the impermeable boundary, the bottom surface of steel soil box, ascending wetting front was observed. This observation can be postulated to be the effects of various sizes of pores. When macro size pores exist, the capillary effects can be reduced and infilling of pore will be limited. The partially filled pores would be filled with water during the ascending of the wetting front, which bounces from the impermeable boundary. This assumption has been assured from the observation of variation of the volumetric water contents at different depth. When the soil layer is thick (thickness = 20 cm), for granular material, erosion is a cause triggering the slope failure. It has been found that the initiation of erosion occurs when the top soil is fully saturated. Meanwhile, when the soil layer is shallow (thickness = 10 cm), slope slides as en mass. The slope failure for this condition occurs when the wetting front reaches to the interface between the soil layer and steel soil box. As the wetting front approaches to the bottom of soil layer, reduction of shear resistance along the boundary and increase of the unit weight due to the infiltration occur and these produce complex effects on the slope failure processes.

  • Gas(or methane) hydrates are solid solutions when water molecules are linked through hydrogen bonding and create host lattice cavities that can enclose a large variety of guest gas molecules. The natural gas hydrate crystal may exist at low temperature above the normal freezing point of water and high pressure greater than about 30 bars. A lot of quantities of natural gas hydrates exists in the earth and many production schemes are being studied. In the present investigation, depressurization method was considered to predict the production of gas and the simulation of the two phase flow - gas and water - in porous media is being carried out. The simulation show about the fluid flow in porous media have a variety of applications in industry. Results provide the appearance of gas and water production, the pressure profile, the saturation of gas/ water/ hydrates profiles and the location of the pressure front.

  • Flow analyses using FLUENT 5.4 code were performed to validate the application of the local bidirectional flow tube in case of water and air flow. In this study, sensitivity studies have been performed to optimize the design features of the bi-directional flow tube which can be applied for the various experimental conditions. 2-dimensional axisymmetric steady state flow analyses have been performed. By calculating the differential pressure at both the front and the rear hole of the flow tube, K values were evaluated. The K values show good linearity regardless of the tube sizes and the Re numbers in both water and air flow. And system pressure and water subcooling didn’'t affect the K values. Under the elevated pressure of 80bar with 80K water subcooling, the K value indicates a similar trend with the case of 2bar with 80K water subcooling.

  • Most of current slope safety analysis consider only the effect of the rise of underground water level. However, because the infiltration of surface water into the ground is believed to have signification effect on slope stability, the present study performed slope safety analysis in case of the rise of underground water level, infiltration of surface water, and both resulting from rainfall, and examined their effect.

  • The vertical distribution and chemical characteristics of water masses were measured along two south-north transects in the polar front region of the central Korean East Sea. In February, a thermocline was present at depth between 50m and loom at the southern sites of a landward A-transect, and its depth was gradually deepened northward. At an outside B-transect, a thermocline was observed at significantly deep depth of 300m to 400m at two northern stations(Stn. 10 and 11), though the depth of the southward stations was nearly identical to that at the northward stations on a A-transect. In September, there were vertically more various water masses, i.e. the Tsushima Warm surface water(TWSW) or more than $20^{\circ}C$, the Tsushima Middle water(TMW) with a range of $12{\~}17^{\circ}C$, the North Korea Cold Water(NKCW) with $1{\~}7^{\circ}C$ temperature, the Japan Sea Proper Water(JSPW) of less than $1^{\circ}C$, and the mixed water. The North Korea Cold Water could be distinguishable from the other waters, especially from the mixed water of the Tsushima Middle Water and the Japan Sea Proper Water by the pattern of $T-O_2$ diagram. For instance, the North Korea Cold Water had higher oxygen by $1{\~}2ml/l$ than those in the mixed water, although both the two water masses ranged $1{\~}7^{\circ}C$ in water temperature. AOU value was the highest in the JSPW and the lowest in the TWSW. Also, AOU indicated a nearly linear and negative correlation with water temperature. However, AOU data for two masses, the NKCW and the TMW, in September departed remarkably from a regression line. Moreover, the ratio of $$\Delta P/\Delta AOU)$ in September was about $0.45{\mu}g-at/ml$ and higher than the value observed in the open sea. This high value could be elucidated by two factors; intrusion of the NKCW with high oxygen and molecular diffusion of dissolved oxygen from the surface into the lower layer. AOU would be a useful tracer for water masses in the polar front area of the Korean East Sea.

  • In this study, the effect of stationary fin and buoyancy devices on dynamic pithing of the tracked vehicle was investigated. For this work, the stationary fin and buoyancy devices were installed in front of body and then pitching variation was measured when rapidly reducing the vehicle speed in water operation. According to the results of measuring the freeboard at each case, when only fin was installed, the effect on freeboard of tracked vehicle in water was negligible. However, when buoyancy devices were installed, front freeboard was approximately increased by about 20~25 mm and rear freeboard was decreased by about 10~15 mm per each addition of 100 kg buoyancy device. Based on the calculation result of pitching decrease rates, it was found that the pitching variation was decreased approximately 12.3 % by fin installation and approximately 2 % by installation of each 100 kg of buoyancy device. The case in which only fin installation was made showed the best efficiency in decreasing pitching variation of the tracked vehicle in water compared to the other cases.
