The sampling and measuring methods of root fiber quantity which greatly governs the stability evaluation of a vegetated levee revetment are proposed by this study and the erosion characteristics related to root fiber quantity are analysed by the experiments. The Phragmites Japonica Steud confirmed the dominant species in a vegetated levee revetment and the Zoysinagrass are selected as the experimental vegetations. The characteristics of erosion depth and erosion rate are analysed according to the root fiber quantity and their corresponding regression equations are suggested. The erosion depth and erosion rate highly decrease with root fiber quantity by experimental results which results in great increasing the erosion resistance of a vegetated levee revetment. The corresponding regression equations for both vegetations of the Phragmites Japonica Steud and the Zoysinagrass are suggested with high determination coefficients. The erosion resistance of the Zoysinagrass is better than that of the Phragmites Japonica Steud.
Managing erosion control dams requires the annual average sediment yield to determine their storage capacity and time to full sediment-fill and dredging. The GeoWEPP (Geo-spatial interface for Water Erosion Prediction Project) model can predict the annual average sediment yield from various land uses and vegetation covers at a watershed scale. This study assessed the GeoWEPP to determine the annual average sediment yield for managing erosion control dams by applying it to five erosion control dams and comparing the results with field observations using ground-based LiDAR (light detection and ranging). The modeling results showed some differences with the observed sediment yields. Therefore, GeoWEPP is not recommended to determine the annual average sediment yield for erosion control dams. Moreover, when using the GeoWEPP, the following is recommended :1) use the US WEPP climate files with similar latitude, elevation and precipitation modified with monthly average climate data in Korea and 2) use soil files based on forest soil maps in Korea. These methods resulted in GeoWEPP predictions and field observations of 0 and 63.3 Mg·yr-1 for the Gangneung, 142.3 and 331.2 Mg·yr-1 for the Bonghwa landslide, 102.0 and 107.8 Mg·yr-1 for the Bonghwa control, 294.7 and 115.0 Mg·yr-1 for the Chilgok forest fire, and 0 and 15.0 Mg·yr-1 for the Chilgok control watersheds. Application of the GeoWEPP in Korea requires 1) building a climate database fit for the WEPP using the meteorological data from Korea and 2) performing further studies on soil and streamside erosion to determine accurate parameter values for Korea.
In this study, a technique based on Fractal Theory with Erosion Model was developed to interpolate the river morphology data at the border area between river bed and river side where both surface and under water surveyings can not be committed easily. Three dimensional river morphology data along the Ara River was generated by the developed technique. The Ara River is an artificially constructed waterway for vessels between the Han River and West Sea of Korea. The result was compared with the survey data by RMSE of 0.384, while the IDW interpolation result has RMSE of 0.802. Consequently, the developed river morphology data interpolation technique using Erosion Model based Fractal Theory is conceived to be superior to the IDW which has been generally used in generating the river morphology data.
The purpose of this study is to suggest a quantitative assessment of wetland damage considering the effects of topsoil erosion and deposition from rainfall. In the Cheoncheon Basin located upstream of the Yongdam Dam, 16 wetlands are located, but the lacustrine and small palustrine wetland were analyzed for possible damage to erosion and deposition. As a result of applying typhoon events in 2002 and 2003, the sediment load from the upper basin was the highest at 2.30% (22,548 ㎥) of low water capacity. The average sediment load in the mountain areas was found to be 0.03% of the low water capacity, and it was analyzed to be less damaging than the lacustrine with relatively large watershed. as a result of the model, the lacustrine wetland, where a large area is used as agricultural land, shows a high probability of sediment yield, so it is highly likely to damage the wetland by topsoil erosion.

Due to the attractive benefits with regard to bone health, digestion, and hydration, carbonated water consumption have rapidly grown over the past few years. However, the acidic drink has latent potential for enamel erosion. The most experimental studies about the enamel erosion have focused on the carbonated beverages with sugar and artificial sweeteners. Here, we determined the enamel erosion potential by commercially available carbonated waters with bovine teeth. The erosion was verified by pH value, calcium concentration, and scanning electron microscope. Then plaque accumulation by bacterial adhesion was determined on the enamel erosion surface to measure roughness. In the present study, we observed that the increased calcium content after being immersed in carbonated waters result from the overall enamel erosion. There were no significant differences between general carbonated waters and mineral waters for erosive capacity. Therefore, commercially available carbonated waters are potentially erosive. In addition, oral bacteria strongly adhered to the erosive enamel surfaces thereby facilitating the development of dental plaque. Thus, it is urgently necessary to provide food safety information on the carbonated water as acidic drink to prevent the enamel erosion.
When marine lubricating oil began to be emulsified and oxidized through ingressive water that have leaked from cooling pump seal systems, cooler, purifier system and piping system, the cavitation erosion-corrosion in alloy metals of bearings remains to the various troublesome problem at effective engine performance. Therefore, applied the cathodic protection to the control test of cavitation erosion-corrosion, and appointed the marine system oil containing 3% sea water as test environments, with different conductibility. Also, used the piezoelectric vibrator with 20 KHz, 24 $\mu$m as the cavity generation apparatus, and examined the weight loss, potential value, current density etc. in specimens with those condition. According to this testing data, investigated influence of cathodic protection on the control characteristics of cavitation erosion-corrosion, and will serve those as an elementary design data of marine bearing.
Soil erosion and sediment has been known as one of pollutants causing water quality degradation in water bodies. With global warming issues worldwide, various soil erosion studies have been performed. Although on-site monitoring of sediment loss would be an ideal method to evaluate soil erosion condition, modeling approaches have been utilized to estimate soil erosion and to evaluate various best management practices on soil erosion reduction. Although the USLE has been used in soil erosion estimation for the last 40 years, the USLE model has limitations in estimating event-based soil erosion reflecting rainfall intensity and rainfall duration for long-term period. Thus, the calibrated model, capable of simulating soil erosion using hourly rainfall data, was utilized in this study to evaluate the effects of rainfall amount and rainfall intensity on soil erosion. It was found that USLE soil erosion value is $3.06ton\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$, while soil erosion values from 2006~2010 were $2.469ton\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$, $0.882ton\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$, $1.489ton\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$, $2.158ton\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$, $1.602ton\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$, respectively. Especially, soil erosion from single storm event for 2008-2010 would be responsible for 30% or more of annual soil loss. As shown in this study, hourly soil erosion estimation system would provide more detailed output from the study area. In addition, the effects of rainfall intensity on soil erosion could be evaluated with this system.
Interrill erosion on a hillslope results from the combined action of the detachment of soil particles by raindrop impact and the sediment transport of surface runoff. This study newly defined the rainfall power which detaches soil particles and the sheet-flow power contributed to sediment transport in terms of energy expenditure rate of soil erosion and presented the effective power equation for interrill erosion by rainfall-induced sheet flow. The rainfall and sheet-flow power was evaluated by factors related with rainfall, slope, and runoff and coefficients of the power equation were analyzed based on references. Futhermore it was confirmed that the relative scales between the rainfall power and the sheet-flow power according to rainfall intensity reflect on the hydrological response and physical process of interrill erosion. From application of the field data for surface runoff and soil erosion it was verified that the rainfall and sheet-flow power is an appropriate equation to estimate a interrill erosion.
This study investigates the impact of riparian vegetation in the floodplain on channel stability, changes in bend curvature, and meandering channel migration. In channels with riparian vegetation, over time, meander width remains relatively constant, but selective bank erosion leads to meander development and downstream movement. During this process, bank erosion and changes in the riverbed are not significant, and the channel maintains relatively constant conditions with reduced sediment discharge and minimal variability. As the density of vegetation increases, bank erosion rates decrease. The erosion rates along the riverbanks increase with the density of vegetation on the floodplain, thus affecting the development of meanders. This factor notably contributes to enhancing riverbank stability and influencing channel changes through floodplain vegetation. Bank erosion rates and dimensionless bend curvature are greatest when there is no riparian vegetation but decrease in conditions with vegetation. Furthermore, the relationship between lateral migration rate and dimensionless bend curvature is similar to that of bank erosion rates. Therefore, riparian vegetation enhances channel stability, influencing bank erosion, meander curvature, and meander migration.
Soil erosion, transportation, and sedimentation by water flow often occur in a stream. This excessive occurrence threatens the safety of hydraulic structures, and aggravates natural disasters like flood. To prevent soil disaster according to the soil erosion, it is necessary to predict accurate sediment outflow primarily. Besides, it is very important to choose appropriate models by basin characteristics, to estimate accurate quantity of related factors, and to acquire available hydrological data. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to estimate soil erosion amount and sediment amount according to rainfall-runoff by using rainfall, discharge, and sediment in the Seolmacheon experimental catchment. And, it proposed sediment delivery ratio of the Seolmacheon catchment by result of studying sediment delivery ratio. Hereafter, this study will estimate sediment delivery ratio by basin characteristics, and formulate the method of estimating soil erosion and sediment outflow in various conditions by applying the results in other catchments.
