Background: Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) makes it possible to detect malignant tumors based on the diffusion of water molecules. However, it is uncertain whether DWI has advantages over FDG-PET for distinguishing malignant from benign pulmonary nodules and masses. Materials and Methods: One hundred-forty-three lung cancers, 17 metastatic lung tumors, and 29 benign pulmonary nodules and masses were assessed in this study. DWI and FDG-PET were performed. Results: The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value ($1.27{\pm}0.35{\times}10^{-3}mm^2/sec$) of malignant pulmonary nodules and masses was significantly lower than that ($1.66{\pm}0.58{\times}10^{-3}mm^2/sec$) of benign pulmonary nodules and masses. The maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax: $7.47{\pm}6.10$) of malignant pulmonary nodules and masses were also significantly higher than that ($3.89{\pm}4.04$) of benign nodules and masses. By using optimal cutoff values for ADC ($1.44{\times}10^{-3}mm^2/sec$) and for SUVmax (3.43), which were determined with receiver operating characteristics curves (ROC curves), the sensitivity (80.0%) of DWI was significantly higher than that (70.0%) of FDG-PET. The specificity (65.5%) of DWI was equal to that (65.5%) of FDG-PET. The accuracy (77.8%) of DWI was not significantly higher than that (69.3%) of FDG-PET for pulmonary nodules and masses. As the percentage of bronchioloalveolar carcinoma (BAC) component in adenocarcinoma increased, the sensitivity of FDG-PET decreased. DWI could not help in the diagnosis of mucinous adenocarcinomas as malignant, and FDG-PET could help in the correct diagnosis of 5 out of 6 mucinous adenocarcinomas as malignant. Conclusions: DWI has higher potential than PET in assessing pulmonary nodules and masses. Both diagnostic approaches have their specific strengths and weaknesses which are determined by the underlying pathology of pulmonary nodules and masses.
Background: Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) makes it possible to detect malignant tumors based on the diffusion of water molecules. It is uncertain whether DWI is more useful than positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) for distinguishing benign from malignant mediastinal tumors and mass lesions. Materials and Methods: Sixteen malignant mediastinal tumors (thymomas 7, thymic cancers 3, malignant lymphomas 3, malignant germ cell tumors 2, and thymic carcinoid 1) and 12 benign mediastinal tumors or mass lesions were assessed in this study. DWI and PET-CT were performed before biopsy or surgery. Results: The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value ($1.51{\pm}0.46{\times}10^{-3}mm^2/sec$) of malignant mediastinal tumors was significantly lower than that ($2.96{\pm}0.86{\times}10^{-3}mm^2/sec$) of benign mediastinal tumors and mass lesions (P<0.0001). Maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) ($11.30{\pm}11.22$) of malignant mediastinal tumors was significantly higher than that ($2.53{\pm}3.92$) of benign mediastinal tumors and mass lesions (P=0.0159). Using the optimal cutoff value (OCV) $2.21{\times}10^{-3}mm^2/sec$ for ADC and 2.93 for SUVmax, the sensitivity (100%) by DWI was not significantly higher than that (93.8%) by PET-CT for malignant mediastinal tumors. The specificity (83.3%) by DWI was not significantly higher than that (66.7%) for benign mediastinal tumors and mass lesions. The accuracy (92.9%) by DWI was not significantly higher than that (82.1%) by PET-CT for mediastinal tumors and mass lesions. Conclusions: There was no significant difference between diagnostic capability of DWI and that of PET-CT for distinguishing mediastinal tumors and mass lesions. DWI is useful in distinguishing benign from malignant mediastinal tumors and mass lesions.

In this study, three levels of W/B(Water to Binder) ratio (0.37, 0.42, 0.47) and substitution ratio of GGBFS (Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) rate (0 %, 30 %, 50 %) were considered to perform RCPT (Rapid Chloride Diffusion Test) at the 1,095 aged day. Accelerated chloride diffusion coefficient and passed charge of each concrete mixture were assessed according to Tang's method and ASTM C 1202, and improving behaviors of durability performance with increasing aged days are analyzed based on the test results of previous aged days from the preceding study. As the age of concrete increases, the passed charge and diffusion coefficient have been significantly reduced, and especially the concrete specimens containing GGBFS showed a significantly more reduction than OPC(Ordinary Portland Cement) concrete specimen by latent hydraulic activity. In the case of OPC concrete's results of passed charge, at the 1,095 days, two of them were still in the "Moderate" class. So, if only OPC is used as the binder of concrete, the resistance performance for chloride attack is weak. In this study, the time-parameters (m) were derived based on the results of the accelerated chloride diffusion coefficient, and the deterministic and probabilistic analysis for service life were performed by assuming the design variable as a probability function. For probabilistic service life analysis, durability failure probabilities were calculated using Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) to evaluate service life. The service life of probabilistic method were lower than that of deterministic method, since the target value of PDF (Probability of Durability Failure) was set very low at 10 %. If the target value of PDF suitable for the purpose of using structure can be set and proper variability can be considered for each design variable, it is believed that more economical durability design can be made.

Two different imide oligomers(6FDA-ODA/APA and 6FDA-MDA/MA) having crosslinkable end groups were prepared by using a solution imidization method and their properties were investigated. Also, semi-interpenetrating polymer networks(semi-IPN) were prepared using the blends of imide oligomers with polyetherimide $Ultem^{(R)}$, which is used in dual-ovenable packaging materials. The characteristic properties of semi-IPN films were interpreted by using TGA, Thin Film Diffusion Analyzer, and WAXD. Molecular weights of imide oligomers were successfully controlled utilizing 2-aminophenylacetylene(APA) and maleic anhydride(MA) as an endcapping agent. Exotherm reactions by crosslinking appeared and the amount of exthotherm heat was linearly increased as the content of imide oligomers was increased. For semi-IPNs of $Ultem^{(R)}$ and imide oligomers, 5% and 10% weight loss temperatures increased as the contents of imide oligomers were increased. Diffusion coefficient and water uptake of semi-IPNs decreased as the content of imide oligomers was increased, which might be resulted from hydrophobic fluorine group and high packing density. It was concluded that relatively low thermal stability and hydrolytic stability of polyetherimide $Ultem^{(R)}$ were improved by incorporating new developed imide oligomers.

As a number of potential endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) are released into the environment, recently growing attention has been drawn to them. Therefore sensitive and reliable analytical methods are essential to monitor those compounds. In this study, complementary CC-MS and LC-MS were employed to analyze the endocrine disrupters, and the results of two methods were compared for di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP), benzylbutylphthalate (BBP), pentachlorophenol (PCP), and 4,4'-Isopropylidenediphenol (Bisphenol-A, or BPA). The results indicate that it was possible to lower the detection limits of EDCs by LC-MS. Also, LC-MS enabled to identify the EDCs as almost intact molecules. Furthermore, this study presented a nanofiltration membrane (MWCO 250) and a ultrafiltration membrane (MWCO 1,000) filtration system as methods far removing EDCs from drinking water containing $\gamma$-BHC, p,p'-DDE, BBP, p,p'-DDT, DEHP, PCP, and BPA. Cross-flow type nanofiltrations showed $100\%$ removal of EDCs, and the result implies that MWCO 250 nanofilter was sufficient for treatment of EDCs. The ratio of permeate flux to mass transfer coefficient of nanofiltration, high flux ultrafiltration, and low flux ultrafiltration with ultrapure water were 0.67, 3.4, and 0.44, respectively. It was found that nanofiltration and low flux ultrafiltration were operated at a diffusion dominant condition, and the high flux ultrafiltration was operated at a convection dominant condition. Furthermore, a diffusion dominant process attained reasonable rejection of EDCs. The removal in the ultrafiltration was depending on the molecular weight of an EDC, and the filtration was governed by diffusion-dominant hydrodynamic conditions.
Tidal exchanges of sea water are studied by using drogue experiments and tidal current measurement data in Gamag Bay which has two channels. At the spring tide, the volume of tidal transport in the bay was estimated to be 46∼52% of the total volume of sea water in Gamag Bay, 7.1 10$\^$8/㎥. The tidal transport through the wide channel occupies 87% of the total tide transport of the bay. Residual current was deduced to flow north-northeastward at the rate of 3.254 10$\^$5/㎥ per tidal cycle. the tidal exchange of the sea water during the flood flow was estimated to be approximately 26% of the tidal transport, while that during the ebb flow was 41%. The tidal exchange through the wide channel during the flood flow occupies 77% of total tidal exchange of the bay through both channels, whereas that during the ebb flow does 88%. The diffusion coefficient of 2.08∼ 2.30 10$\^$7/$\textrm{cm}^2$/sec at the narrow channel was greater than that at the wide channel which was 1.2∼2.8 10$\^$6/$\textrm{cm}^2$/sec.

It has been well known that concrete structures exposed to chloride and sulfate attack environments lead to significant deterioration in their durability due to chloride ion and sulfate ion attack. The purpose of this experimental research is to evaluate the resistance against chloride ion and sulfate attack of the cementless concrete replacing the cement with ground granulated blast furnace slag. For this purpose, the cementless concrete specimens were made for water-binder ratios of 40%, 45%, and 50%, respectively and then this specimens were cured in the water of $20{\pm}3^{\circ}C$ and immersed in fresh water, 10% sodium sulfate solution for 28 and 91 days, respectively. To evaluate the resistance to chloride ion and sulfate attack for the cementless concrete specimens, the diffusion coefficient for chloride ion and compressive strength ratio, mass change ratio, and length change ratio were measured according to the NT BUILD 492 and JSTM C 7401, respectively. It was observed from the test results that the resistance against chloride ion and sulfate attack of the cemetntless concrete were comparatively largely increased than those of OPC concrete with decreasing water-binder ratio.
Saline water movements in relation to tidal condition and river discharge in the estuary of the Nakdong River are discussed on the basis of the observation data. The difference of salinity between the surface and the bottom layer was 1∼3 at spring tide forming a vertically homogeneous estuary, while at neap tide, it ranges up to 7∼15 indicating a sharp salt wedge. The maximum salinity appeared approximately at an hour after the high water, that is, three hours after the landward velocity maximum, while the salinity maximum at around an hour after the low water, that is, three hours after the seaward velocity maximum. The density current speed at a section located 10km landward from the river mouth was observed approximately to be 45cm sec$\^$-1/ at 8m layer. The relations between the salinity at Gupo and the river discharge at Jindong are estimated by means of the least square method. The maximum length of the salt wedge is calculated approximately to be 22km at neap tide and 16km at spring tide, which is in accordance with the observed data. The salinity influence area is deduced to be 45km at spring tide and 35km at neap tide. The diffusion coefficient of salinity was estimated approximately to be 1.5 10$\^$8/$\textrm{cm}^2$ sec$\^$-1/ at Samrak and 8 10$\^$5/$\textrm{cm}^2$ sec$\^$-1/ at Gupo at neap tide, while it was 1.4 10$\^$7/$\textrm{cm}^2$ sec$\^$-1/ at Dongwon at spring tide.
In this research, three dimensional mathematical models were developed to predict the shelf life of tofu packaged in a semi-rigid plastic container. A model combining oxygen transfer through the package and oxygen consumption within the package was considered. According to the results, the model simulations estimated that the number of microorganisms in the filled water was higher than that in the tofu, suggesting the shelf life of packaged tofu was not affected by the number of microorganisms in the tofu product, but rather by the number of organisms in the filled water. Additionally, the effects of the physical properties of the packaging material, such as oxygen permeability through the package, oxygen diffusion coefficient, the initial oxygen concentration in the filled water, and the depth of the filled water in the packaged tofu, were also observed.

Background: Methodologies for a series of radiological consequence assessments show a distinctive difference according to the design principles of the original nuclear suppliers and their technical standards to be imposed. This is due to the uncertainties of the accidental source term, radionuclide behavior in the environment, and subsequent radiological dose. Both types of PWR and PHWR are operated in Korea. However, technical standards for evaluating atmospheric dispersion have been enacted based on the U.S. NRC's positions regardless of the reactor types. For this reason, it might cause a controversy between the licensor and licensee of a nuclear power plant. Materials and Methods: It was modelled under the framework of the NRC Regulatory Guide 1.145 for light-water reactors, reflecting the features of heavy-water reactors as specified in the Canadian National Standard and the modelling features in MACCS2, such as atmospheric diffusion coefficient, ground deposition, surface roughness, radioactive plume depletion, and exposure from ground deposition. Results and Discussion: An integrated accident consequence assessment code, ACCESS (Accident Consequence Assessment Code for Evaluating Site Suitability), was developed by taking into account the unique regulatory positions for reactor types under the framework of the current Korean technical standards. Field tracer experiments and hand calculations have been carried out for validation and verification of the models. Conclusion: The modelling approaches of ACCESS and its features are introduced, and its applicative results for a hypothetical accidental scenario are comprehensively discussed. In an applicative study, the predicted results by the light-water reactor assessment model were higher than those by other models in terms of total doses.
