This paper is to investigate the mechanical characteristics of light-weighted soils (LWS) consisting of expanded polystyrene(EPS), dredged clays and cement by using both uniaxial and triaxial compression tests. The mechanical characteristics of the compressive strength of LWS are analysed with varying initial water contents of dredged clays, EPS ratio, cement ratio, and curing stress. In the triaxial compression state, it is found that the compressive strength of LWS containing EPS is independent on the effective confined stress. As the EPS ratio decreases($A_E$<2%) and cement ratio increases($A_c$>2%), the behavior characteristics of triaxial compressive strength-strain relationship is similar to that of cemented soil which decreases rapidly in compressive strength after ultimate compressive strength. For the applications of LWS to ground improvements which require the compressive strength of up to 200kPa, the optimized EPS ratio and initial water content of dredged clay are estimated to be 3~4% and 165~175%, respectively. Also, the ultimate compressive strength under both triaxial test and uniaxial compression states are almost constant for a cement ratio of up to 2% and then critical cement ratio of this LWS shall be 2%.

The purpose of this study is to identify the possibility of developing the 100% Recycled-resources Absorbent-Pervious Alkali-activated Blocks using both the alkalli-binder and the recycled aggregate. In addition, It established a test method such as Void ratio, compressive strength, coefficient permeability, absorption, and evaporation. As a result, an alkali-activated using recycled aggregate block was able to manufacture an 24 MPa class absorbent-pervious blocks with a liquid type sodium silicate and early high temperature curing. In this case, water-holding capacity, absorption and relative absorption were more effective than the natural aggregates. In conclusion, Absorbent-pervious alkali-activated Block Using recycled aggregate has a surface temperature reducing effect of approximately 10 % compared to ordinary concrete block.

The applicable scope of adhesives in the current society is broad and currently, several types of PVAc resin are sold in the market for adhesives. PVAc resin is primarily used for wood works and paper adhesion. However, the PVAc resin itself has the disadvantages that its viscosity is highly temperature- dependent and the work condition and viscosity get worse at the low temperature in the winter seasons. Although phthalate-based plasticizer is used to complement these disadvantages, adhesion strength and heat-resistance are weakened by adding the phthalate-based plasticizer and in the winter period, the amount of quantity should be increased. Also in a high-density product, it worsens the work condition by causing a rise of viscosity and delays curing and in a low-density product, it worsens the storage stability by causing separate precipitation. In addition to these, the phthalate-based plasticizer as a material of causing environmental hormones is currently restricted in the advanced countries for its amount of use and also in the domestic market, it is necessary to prepare for the situation. This study has not only eliminated the disadvantages of PVAc resin emulsion without adding a phthalate-based plasticizer of causing these problems, but also synthesized the PVAc resin for timber adhesion that is excellent in woodwork, thermal-resistance, water-resistance, storage stability, and adhesion performance. As the result, it has proven an excellent performance in thermal resistance, water resistance, storage stability, and minimum film forming temperature.
The structural and useful characteristics of silk habutae treated with silicone resin by emulsion finishing method were studied. The results were obtained through crease recovery test, water repellency test, scanning micrograph observation, amino acid analysis, X-Ray diffraction analysis, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. The results are summarized as follows; 1) The improvement in crease recovery of silk habutae finished with silicone resin, was observed b soaping treatment and curing conditions. 2) The higher water repellency and stiffness in silk fabrics finished with silicone resin was found by the fabric inspection and the scanning electron microscopic observation. It is suggested that silicone resin impregnated into the void of silk fibroin. 3) The polar side chains of amino acid composition were decreased, when the silicone resin was treated on silk fibroin. 4) Through Amino acid analysis of silicone resin finished fibroin, the different amounts of amino acid composition was indicated due to silk fibroin silicone polymer reaction and the structural difference of its fibroin were also proved by X-ray diffractograms. 5) The functionality of the siloxane compound may be deduced from the silicone finished silk habutae by Fourier Transform Spectroscopy. It was concluded from the above results that the useful characteristics of silk fabric can be improved by silicone resin finishing.

At the onset of corrosion of steel in concrete, hydrogen ions usually evolve in the process of electrochemical reaction, thereby decreasing the pH of the pore solution, which can be buffered by cement hydration products, as being representatively illustrated by calcium hydroxide. Hence, a fall in the pH is dependent on properties of cement hydration (i.e. hydration products and degree of hydration). The present study tested acid neutralization capacity (ANC) of cementitious binders of OPC(Ordinary Portland Cement), 30% PFA(Pulverized Fuel Ash), 60% GGBS(Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag), 10% SF(Silica Fume) to quantify the resistance of cement matrix to a pH fall. Cement pastes were cast at 0.4 of a free W/C ratio with 1.5% chlorides by weight of binder in cast. Powder samples obtained crushed and ground specimen after 200 days of curing were diluted in still water combined with different levels of 1M nitric acid solution, ranging from 0.5 to 20 mol/kg. Then, the pH of diluted solution was monitored until any further change in the pH did not take place. It was seen that the pH of the diluted solution gradually decreased as the molar amount of nitric acid increased. At some particular values of the pH, however, a decrease in the pH was marginal, which can be expressed in the peak resistances to a pH fall in the ANC curve. The peaks occurred at the variations in the pH, depending on binder type, but commonly at about 12.5 in the pH, indicate a resistance of precipitated calcium hydroxide. The measurement of water soluble chloride at the end of test showed that the amount of free chloride was significantly increased at the pH corresponding to the peaks in the ANC curve, which may reflect the adsorption of hydration products to chlorides.
The main objective of this study is to evaluate the long-term performance of various concrete composites in natural marine environment prevailing in the Gulf region. Durability assessment studies of such nature are usually carried out under aggressive environments that constitute seawater, chloride and sulfate laden soils and wind, and groundwater conditions. These studies are very vital for sustainable development of marine and off shore reinforced concrete structures of industrial design such as petroleum installations. First round of testing and evaluation, which is presented in this paper, were performed by standard tests under laboratory conditions. Laboratory results presented in this paper will be corroborated with test outcome of ongoing three years field exposure conditions. The field study will include different parameters of investigation for high performance concrete including corrosion inhibitors, type of reinforcement, natural and industrial pozzolanic additives, water to cement ratio, water type, cover thickness, curing conditions, and concrete coatings. Like the laboratory specimens, samples in the field will be monitored for corrosion induced deterioration signs and for any signs of failureover initial period ofthree years. In this paper, laboratory results pertaining to microsilica (SF), ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), epoxy coated rebars and calcium nitrite corrosion inhibitor are very conclusive. Results affirmed that the supplementary cementing materials such as GGBS and SF significantly impacted and enhanced concrete resistivity to chloride ions penetration and hence decrease the corrosion activities on steel bars protected by such concretes. As for epoxy coated rebars applications under high chloride laden conditions, results showed great concern to integrity of the epoxy coating layer on the bar and its stability. On the other hand corrosion inhibiting admixtures such as calcium nitrite proved to be more effective when used in combination with the pozzolanic additives such as GGBS and microsilica.
This study was carried out on the stabilized/solidified treatment for the reducing leachability of hazardous heavy metals copper, lead, chromium and cadmium in the hazardous sludge which treated to be unleached heavy metals by sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate. Cement matrix was analyzed for the leachability of 24 hrs and dynamic leaching test, structure and the optimum condition for the stabilization and solidification of the hazardous sludge. In 28 days of curing time the unconfined compressive strength was 21.5 kg/cm$^2$ at the ratio of portland cement (0.5)+fly ash (0.25) and 23.5 kg/cmz at the ratio of portland cement (0.5)+fly ash (0.25) + cake (0.25). High concentration of Pb, Cr and Cd in the sea water and Cu in the distilled water were leached at the dynamic leaching test. The concentration of leaching heavy metals for specimens which were tested 24 hrs were found low leachability with decreasing pH of leachant. According to dynamic leaching test, the low level of copper, lead, cadmium and chromium were leached in the cement matrix with sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate. But the effective diffusion coefficient of unleached cement matrix which was treated sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate was decreased above 2 times than that of cement matrix. The relation of leachant renewal period (Y) and cumulative fraction ion leached (X) was the following regression equations. Solidification with unleached agent. Y$_{Cu}$ = 1413752X + 247, Y$_{Pb}$ = 223501IX + 214, Y$_{Cr}$ = 8310601X - 472, Y$_{Cd}$ = 168787X + 1061 The structure of' solidified matrix with X-ray diffraction analysis was composed more Ca(OH)$_2$, Si, Mg(OH)$_2$ and Al in the unleached cement matrix than those in cement matrix.
Effect of the polymer-binder ratio and slag content on the properties of combined wet/dry-cured polymer-modified mortars using granulated blast-furnace slag are examined. Results shows that the flexural and compressive strengths of polymer-modified mortar using the slag tend to increase with increasing slag content, and reaches a maximum at a slag content of 40 %, and is inclined to increase with increasing polymer-binder ratio. Water absorption, carbonation depth and chloride ion penetration depth tend to decrease with increasing polymer-binder ratio and slag content. Accordingly, the incorporation of slag into polymer-modified mortars at a slag content of 40% is recommended for a combined wet/dry curing regardless of the types of polymer.
The strength development of PFA concretes were invest~gated in this study. The work
undertaken was divided into two parts which considered both the influence of PFA replacement
level up to 45% and the effect of cement type at the high PRA leveI(45%). The additiorlal
cement considered included a rapdhardemng portland ccnlent. The full range of concrete struc
tural grades were studied anti ciight cu~ing contlltiorls covering those 11:ied 111 practlce were
examined. The early strength retluced wit11 increasing PFA content. However, post 28days, the
reverse was observed. It was posslhle through the use of rapid hardening portland cement at the
high PFA level to achieve similar early strength to OPC concrete, with the same benefits noted
above also being obtained post 28 days. The compressive strength uf hlgh PYA content
concrt:tes at hgh temperature m s found to be higher than the ccmtrol at all ages hoth in water
and alr. The same trends were observed at low t.ernperature in air. However, the reverse occur-ed at the low temperature In water.
