Design Parameters of Riverbed Filtration Estimated from Geochemical Data (지구화학적 해석을 이용한 하상여과 설계인자에 대한 연구)

  • This study investigates the design parameters for riverbed filtration (RBF) based on the geochemistry of river water and groundwater. The study area consists of alluvium, and the area is readily affected by non-point sources of chemical contaminants in the surface environment; this is expected to affect the design parameters for RBF. River and groundwater samples were collected at three points along the river flow and at nine points along a transect normal to the river, respectively. The geochemical data indicate that the sources of individual chemical contaminants are industrial facilities and agricultural activity near the study area. In addition, The samples are mainly Ca-Na-$HCO_3$, Ca-Cl, and Ca-$HCO_3$-Cl type waters. The design parameters of RBF in the study area should consider K, $HCO_3$, $NO_3$, and Cl. We divided the study area into three regions based on the concentrations of stable nitrogen isotopes: Region A, the origin of the river and denitrification; Region B, denitrification in the flow direction of tributaries; and Region C, the origin of natural soil, sewage, and anthropogenic pollution.

Study on Installation Capacities of Wastewater Reclamation and Reusing System Applying to Contact Aeration Process using Cost-benefit Analysis (경제성분석을 이용한 접촉폭기방식 중수도의 설치규모분석에 관한 연구)

  • This study provides economical installation capacities for wastewater reclamation and reusing system in 7 areas of South Korea applying to contact aeration process using NPV(net present value) model based on cost-benefit. First. considering only private benefits. economical installation capacities for wastewater reclamation and reusing system applying to contact aeration process in household use were more than $500m^3/day$ in Pusan. $1,000m^3/day$ in Taegu. $2,000m^3/day$ in Kwangju. However. installation capacities in Seoul. Inchen, Taejon, and Ulsan were not optimal for $3,000m^3/day$. Therefore, supply ways of wastewater reclamation and reusing system in household use in the latter areas were more optimal local recirculation system than individual recirculation system. Economical installation capacities for wastewater reclamation and reusing system in business use were more than $100m^3/day$ in Seoul. Pusan. and Kwangju and which were $300m^3/day$ in Taegu, Inchen, Taejon, and Ulsan. Economical installation capacities for wastewater reclamation and reusing system in commercial use were more than $100m^3/day$ in Seoul, Pusan, Taegu, Kwangju, Taejon, and Ulsan, and which were $300m^3/day$ in Inchen. Second, considering only social benefits. economical installation capacity for wastewater reclamation and reusing system applying to contact aeration process was more than $100m^3/day$.

Analysis of Growth Condition and Some Suggestions for Its Maintenance of Legally Protected Trees Grown in Pyungtack City, Kunggi Province, Korea (경기도 평택시 보호수의 생육실태와 관리방안 연구)

  • This study intended to analyze growth condition of each object by protected tree's ground for 45 places registered to Pyeongtaek protected tree list in locational characteristics, conduct exchange analysis for impediment extent rate in crown area and tree type to the result and suggest the measures to manage artificial impediment which is an effect on protected tree condition. In this study, the tree whose area of impediment for crown area is less than 21% is tree condition of grade 1~2, less than 21~50% is grade 2~3 and more than 50% is grade 3~5. The more impediment is, the more inconvenience causes on growth and development. So, it verified that the area rate must maintain less than 21% for the root system management of protected tree. For the standard of managing artificial impediment which is an effect on the tree condition of protected trees, the below matters intend to be suggested. The first, the impediment in crown area should be less than 21%. But, if there is not artificial impediment out of crown area, the rate of impediment area is considered to increase somewhat. The second, growth space of protected tree should be maintained by crown area at least and impediment should be established out of the crown area. The third, during the national project and land development, surroundings of protected tree must be applied as park, resting place, etc. and the establishment area of impediment (artificial impediment and natural impediment) in crown area must be limited. The forth, publicity for regional people (especially, land owner) is necessary for the protection of natural inheritance and the value of dependence on local government and village which are the subject of management must be announced widely through the internet media, etc, so its importance must be recognized. The fifth, the matters related to protected tree management must be able to limit artificial damage which is for surroundings of protected tree through the mutual connection among the local governments; construction, civil engineering, architecture, water and sewage, agriculture and forest and others. Also, following studies on the effects of kinds, thickness, etc. of impediment around the protected tree on trees should be continued.

Evaluation of the Development and Reduction Scheme under Implementation Plan of Total Maximum Daily Loads in the Jinwi Watershed (진위천 수계의 수질오염총량제 시행에 따른 지역개발과 삭감계획 평가)

  • The development and reduction scheme under implementation plan of TMDLs were performed in the Jinwi watershed including 8 cities (Gunpo, Yongin, Suwon, Anseong, Osan, Uiwang, Pyeongtaek and Hwaseong) since 2012. Progress of the annual development schemes was faster than the reduction schemes in most of the cities during the planning period. Main load reduction methods included establishment and enlargement of sewage treatment plants, resources of livestock excretions, and introduction of best management practices of non-point source pollution. Especially, reduction load using recycling and composting of livestock excretions comprised 34.1% of all reduction load. It is necessary to implement methodical development and reduction scheme for making of successful performance of TMDLs and water quality improvement in the Jinwi watershed.

Biochemical Methane Potential of Agricultural Waste Biomass (농산 바이오매스의 메탄 생산 퍼텐셜)

  • Recently, anaerobic methane production of agricultural waste biomass has received increasing attention. Until now domestic BMP (Biochemical methane potential) studies concerned with agricultural waste biomass have concentrated on the several waste biomass such as livestock manure, food waste, and sewage sludge from WWTP (Waste water treatment plant). Especially, the lack of standardization study of BMP assay method has caused the confused comprehension and interpretation in the comparison of BMP results from various researchers. Germany and USA had established the standard methods, VDI 4630 and ASTM E2170-01, for the analysis of BMP and anaerobic organic degradation, respectively. In this review, BMP was defined in the aspect of organic material represented as COD (Chemical oxygen demand) and VS (Volatile solid), and the influence of several parameters on the methane potential of the feedstock was presented. In the investigation of domestic BMP case studies, BMP results of 18 biomass species generating from agriculture and agro-industry were presented. And BMP results of crop species reported from foreign case studies were presented according to the classification system of crops such as food crop, vegetables, oil seed and specialty crop, orchards, and fodder and energy crop. This review emphasizes the urgent need for characterizing the innumerable kind of biomass by their capability on methane production.

Bacteriological study on carcasses and environmental specimens from different stage of slaughter process (도축처리 단계별 도체 및 환경재료에 대한 미생물학적 분석)

  • To get the information of sanitary develoment of beef and pork, we get the result of environmental specimens(slaughter house floors, sewage, etc) in laboratory. 1. After examination of bacterial infection on after-bleeding, after-dismemberment and final products at each stage of cattle slaughter process, we got log 3.80~7.48cfu/$\textrm{cm}^2$ of aerobic plate counts and log 2.60~5.23cfu/$\textrm{cm}^2$ of coliform counts or so from the carcasses after bleeding, but these count levels went down little bit after dismemberment but as we continued study to the final products, the count levels kept sililar in mumbers. 2. At the slaughter process of pigs, the aerobic plate counts and the coliform counts reached such high levels of log 5.59~8.80cfu/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and log 3.31~5.67cfu/$\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively, after bleeding, in general, these count diminished in a big way after scalding, but they increased just little bit from dismemberment to final products. And there were few differences in the contamination levels on the final products no matter what seasonal contaminations after bleeding. 3. Test revealed very low levels of cell counts both on the aerobic plate counts of washing water and in the coliform counts, the former was log 1.00~2.69cfu/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and the later was log 3.30~5.67cfu/$\textrm{cm}^2$, but the contamination levels on the beds of transfering vehicles for carcasses were very high as followes : the aerobic counts was log 4.23~7.20cfu/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and coliform counts was log 2.86~5.20cfu/$\textrm{cm}^2$. 4. Study showed the aeroboc plate counts and the coliform counts get to the highest levels in summer, the second highest one is in fall, the third in spring, lowest in winter. Resulting from the test results proven above we reached this kind of conclusion the bacterial contaminations on eatable carcasses were upto hygienic treatment of carcasses and cleaniness of transfering vehicles at the final stop of slaughter processes rather than upto at any stage of slaughter processes. Therefore we have got to establish alternatives immediately to develo sanitary quality of meat and pork.

A Study on Improving Pricing Criteria for Post-Construction Evaluation (건설공사 사후평가 용역대가기준 개선방안)

  • In 2000, post-construction evaluation was introduced for the purposes to evaluate demand, cost, and construction period of public construction projects and to reduce errors of public order agencies. However, pricing guide of post-construction evaluation has not been established, which becomes a cause of quality degradation of post-construction service and conflict occurrence. This study suggests the pricing guide in the form of percentage of construction cost method and cost plus fee method based on data of post-construction evaluation. This study investigates the construction costs and service costs for post-construction evaluation and conducts the comparative analysis of 'percentage of construction cost method' and 'cost plus fee method.' The analysis result shows 'cost plus fee method' is more accuracy than 'percentage of construction cost method.' In particular, cost plus fee method includes various correction coefficients, such as distance, area, and integration, in order to reflect the project characteristics of each infrastructure, and suggests linear construction (roads, railways), nonlinear construction I (housing and industry complex), and nonlinear construction II (airports, seaports, dams, water and sewage).

Comparison of Anoxic/Oxic Membrane Bioreactor - Reverse Osmosis and Activated Sludge Process-Microfiltration-Reverse Osmosis Process for Advanced Treatment of Wastewater (폐수의 고도처리를 위한 무산소/호기형 분리막생물반응조 - 역삼투 공정과 활성슬러지공정 - 정밀여과 - 역삼투 공정의 비교)

  • A membrane bioreactor (MBR) is an effective tool for wastewater treatment with recycling. MBR process has several advantages over conventional activated sludge process (ASP); reliability, compactness, and quality of treated water. The resulting high-quality and disinfected effluents suggest that MBR process can be suitable for the reused and recycling of wastewater. An anoxic/oxic (A/O) type MBR was applied to simultaneous removal of organics and nutrients in sewage. At first, the efficiency of submerged MBR process was investigated using a hollow fiber microfiltration membrane with a constant flux of $10.2L/m^2{\cdot}h$ at each solids retention time (SRT). Results showed that protein/carbohydrate (P/C) ratio increased and total extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) remained constant with SRT increased. Secondly, A/O type MBR with a reverse osmosis (RO) membrane was employed to treat the municipal wastewater. The performance of A/O type MBR-RO process is better for the treatment of organics and nutrients than ASP-MF-RO process in terms of consistent effluents quality.

Analysis on the contamination and source of VOCs in groundwaters of Gwangju area (광주광역시의 지하수 중 휘발성유기화합물(VOCs)의 오염과 오염원 분석)

  • VOCs were detected in the 21 groundwaters out of 37 groundwaters sampled from around the Hanam Industrial Complex and the Gwangju stream. Ten components of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons of VOCs were detected in the 18 groundwater samples. Among them, total trihalomethanes (TTHM) concentration is in the range of $0.1~36.2{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/L$, CECs concentration is $2.3~190{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/L$, and chlorinated solvents concentration containing PCE, TCE, etc. is $0.1~124.2{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/L$ respectively. Ten components of the aromatic hydrocarbons of VOCs were detected in the 5 groundwater samples, but their concentration are less than $1{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/L$. Detection frequency and concentration of the chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons components from the groundwaters in the Hanam Industrial Complex are higher than those of nearby downtown Gwangju stream. VOCs components except for TCE are lower than the MCL of USGS drinking water standard. TCE concentration of the 2 groundwater samples is over MCL, whose concentrations are 5 and 25 times higher than MCL, respectively. TCE is detected from the H8 and H10 groundwater samples and CFCs is detected H8 and H11 groundwater samples in the Hanam Industrial Complex. TTHM in study area is estimated from leakage of the main waters or sewage waters. Because most of the studied groundwater is under an aerobic condition, aromatic hydrocarbons are well degraded. But chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons are degraded very slowly.

Development of 3D Underground Information Construction and Visualization System Based on IUGIM (지하공간통합지도 기반 3차원 지하정보 구축 및 가시화시스템 개발)

  • Due to recent underground space accidents, are a frequent occurence in Korea, the government established the basic plan for the construction of the IUGIM (Integrated Underground Geospatial Information Map) in 2015 as a measure for safety management of underground spaces. The development of IUGIM was partially completed as of 2021. The underground space management entity and related organizations are utilizing it. This study is being carried out as part of a plan to improve the usability of IUGIM, and to build a visualization system that compares real-time field data with stored data. A system, equipped with a visualization function for borehole data and 6 types of underground facilities built and managed on IUGIM; a tool capable of comparative analysis with real-time data measured in the field, is being built. The 6 types of underground facilities are water supply pipe, sewage pipe, power pipe, gas pipe, communication pipe, and heating pipe. The completed system was demonstrated at three locations in Seocho-gu, Gangnam-gu in Seoul. The field demonstration was carried out by accessing the mobile center and downloading IUGIM data, visualizing IUGIM data (surface creation, borehole information, underground facilities), and visualizing the GPR(Ground Penetrating Radar)-based data acquired at the field. As a result of the empirical results of IUGIM data and GPR-based field data, it was judged to be suitable. As a result of this study, it is judged that it can be helpful for safe construction at the excavation site.
