In this study, the extraction characteristics of soluble solid from Rumex crispus(Curled dock) was studied from the investigation of the effects of experimental conditions on extraction rate; extraction ratio, composition of extractants, extraction time and pH of extractant, etc. The proximate composition of Rumex crispus was 2.58% crude lipid, 5.59% crude protein, 7.39% crude ash, 6.13% moisture and 78.31% carbohydrate, respectively. Turbidity of extract by distilled water was higher and increased with extraction time and extraction temperature, where as the turbidity didn't increase by ethanol and methanol in 20 folds of extraction ratio. Turbidity was inversely proportional to the extraction ratio for the three extractants at 25$^{\circ}C$ and 1 hour extraction. But turbidity of extract was highest by composition of 50% methanol-water extractant than any other compositions of extractants. Eighteen and fifteen free aminoacids were detected in extracts with distilled water, methanol and ethanol extractant, respectively, and it's contents were order of glutamic acid>proline>aminobutyric acid>alanine. The extraction rate of soluble solid from Rumex crispus was order of distilled water>methanol>ethanol within experimental extraction ratio. In extraction with distilled water, the contents of soluble solid was inversely proportional to the pH of extractant.

Rubiadin, a major compound of noni ($Morinda$$citrifolia$) adventitious root, is highly valued in pharmaceutical industry due to hepatoprotective activity. To dissect rubiadin's effective extraction condition, extraction process of noni adventitious roots was performed with different solvent types, ratio of water to methanol (water, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100% of methanol), extraction time, and extraction method. In contrast, we also developed a reverse- phase HPLC assay method to determine rubiadin from noni adventitious roots. The HPLC assay of rubiadin was performed by C-18 column using a gradient solvent system of methanol and water with UV detector at 280 nm. The extraction efficiency of different types of solvents were increased in order of methanol (0.08%) > ethanol (0.05%) > acetonitrile (0.03%) > acetone (0.02%) and methylene chloride (0.02%). The results of rubiadin extraction using different solvents showed that 1 hour of ultrasonic extraction was effective in order of 60% methanol (0.21%) > 80% methanol (0.13%) > 100% methanol (0.07%), 40% methanol (0.07%) and 2 hours of reflux extraction was effective in order of 60% methanol (0.21%) > 40% methanol (0.17%) > 80% methanol (0.14%). To compare the extraction efficiency of rubiadin according to the extraction methods and time for high rubiadin content, the extracts of rubiadin in noni adventitious roots were isolated with the methods of ultrasonic extraction, shaking extraction and reflux extraction. Rubiadin extracted from the methods of ultrasonic waves and shaking displayed the highest contents at 8 and 24 hours, respectively.
Paulownia coreana is a medicinal, edible and industrial plant with the largest leaf, and is native to Korea. We evaluated the reducing power activities, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activities (RSAs), nitrite scavenging activities (NSAs) and 2,2-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) cation RSAs by solvent extraction of P. coreana bark by using $50^{\circ}C$ hot water and $25^{\circ}C$ methanol. The antioxidative effect of P. coreana bark extract on corn seed oil was evaluated using the Rancimat test. The extraction yields on dry weight basis with 15 folds of hot water and methanol were 23.88% and 5.30%, respectively; further the flavonoid content in the hot water extract was over 2.5 times more than that in the methanol extract. The DPPH RSA of the methanol extract was substantially higher than that of the water extract, whereas the NSA of the water extract was higher than that of the methanol extract at pH 1.2. The ABTS RSAs of the two extracts were almost the same as that of ascorbic acid and 2,6-ditertiarybutyl hydroxytoluene. The two extracts of P. coreana bark in this study were found to slightly improve the oxidation stability of corn seed oil.
Effects of modifier and soaking on extraction of triterpenoid saponin (glycyrrhizin) from liquorice were examined using supercritical $CO_2(SC-CO_2)$ at 50 MPa, $60^{\circ}C$, and flow rate of 3 mL/min, and glycyrrhizin content was analyzed by HPLC. Additon of undiluted methanol, ethanol or isopropanol as modifier to $SC-CO_2$ had little influence on extraction yield of glycyrrhizin. Soaking process using water increased the extraction yield as the sample to solvent ratio was increased. Addition of 70% methanol, ethanol or isopropanol to $SC-CO_2$ significantly increased the extraction yields, with 70% methanol resulting in the highest yield. When water at 90% (w/w) of sample weight was used for soaking, the extraction yield and rate increased, 70% ethanol-modified $SC-CO_2$ was almost equal to that obtained using 70% methanol.

Background: Roots of Withania somnifera (WS) are a celebrated medicinal ingredient in Ayurvedic and many other indigenous systems of medicine. The present study investigates the effect of the phytochemical composition of the extracts on their antioxidant and reducing activities. Methods: WS roots were extracted with water, acetone, aqueous methanol (1:1), and methanol:-chloroform:water (1:1:1) to obtain aqueous, acetone, hydro-methanolic, and methanol-chloroform-water extracts. Thereafter, phytochemical constitution and antioxidant and reducing activities of the extracts were compared using different qualitative and quantitative tests. Results: Maximum extraction recovery was obtained with 50% aqueous methanol whereas extraction with acetone yielded the poorest recovery. Methanol-chloroform-water extract had the highest content of phytochemical constituents, except tannins, and also exhibited the highest antioxidant and reducing activities. Conclusion: Phytochemical composition and antioxidant and reducing activities of the extracts were positively associated with the use of organic solvents during the extraction process. Alkaloids and flavonoids were the most important contributors in the antioxidant and reducing activities of the extracts.
Antioxidant activities of 80% methanol, water, and 70% ethanol extracts of Lentinula edodes GNA01 were compared and estimated. The yield of Lentinula edodes GNA01 was identified to be in the following order: water>70% ethanol>80% methanol, but there was no significant difference between 80% methanol and 70% ethanol extracts. The highest total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) were found in water extract, and TPC of 80% methanol extract was higher than that of 70% ethanol extract and TFC of 70% ethanol extract was higher than that of 80% methanol extract. Water extract exhibited the strongest DPPH, ABTS radicals, and nitrite scavenging activities, $Fe^{2+}$ chelating ability, and FRAP among the three extracts. In addition, antioxidant activity of 80% methanol extract was higher than that of 70% ethanol extract in most of the experiments. As a result, antioxidant activity of Lentinula edodes GNA01 showed a difference according to extraction solvent and concentration; nevertheless, water extract exhibiting high polarity had the strongest antioxidant effect. Consequently, water extract from Lentinula edodes GNA01 is anticipated to be useful for the development of a high value-added functional product.

The purpose of this study is to investigate optical behaviour of coloring matter of gromwell -extracted by water, acetic acid/methanol, and the other solvents. The results were as following: UV, VIS spectra of the solution of coloring matter of gromwell extracted by water at below $80^{\circ}C$ did not reveal in the range of the visible light wavelength and coloring matter of gromwell decomposed to blue particle at $95^{\circ}C$. The solution extracted by acetic acid/methanol was tinged with reddish purple and its spectra shifted to the longer wavelength according to increase of the solvent temperature. The color of the solution extracted by water became extinct as time went by, but that extracted by acetic acid/methanol kept up original color. In case of dried gromwell, extraction by acetic acid/methanol was easier than by water, and variation of spectra did not appear but showed hypochromic shift.
Onion, licorice, abgelia root, Chinese date, pine needle, and mulberry leaf were used to extract functional components far onion complex drink. No differences were observed between water extraction at room temperature and methanol extraction in electron-donating ability (EDA), thiosulfinate content (TSC), and ascorbic acid content (AAC), whereas water extraction resulted in higher nitrite-scavenging ability at pH 1.2 and 3.0, and lower superoxide dismutase-like ability than methanol extraction. Level of water extracts prepared by hard-boiling for 3 hr at above $100^{\circ}C$ was higher in all functional abilities except TSC than those prepared at room temperature. Optimal conditions for water extraction and storage were $100-120^{\circ}C$ for 6 hr and low-temperature storage, respectively.
The effective extraction of antioxidative substances from soybeans was studied by the mixed solvents of methanol or ethanol with water at 30$^{\circ}C$ and 85$^{\circ}C$. At accelerated peroxidation condition, POV (peroxide value) of soybean oil and TBARS (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) value of egg yolk liposome with extracts added, were applied for the evaluation of antioxidative activity of the extracts. In the peroxidation of soybean oil, antioxidative substance of soybeans was extracted more effectively by methanol and at higher temperature 85$^{\circ}C$, and the deffated and roasted soybean extract (DRS) showed higher antioxidative activity. But in the Peroxidation of egg yolk liposome, methanol extract from the roasted soybeans (ROS) showed higher activity.
The effects of modifiers such as methanol, water diethylamine in methanol (10 v/v %), and diethylamine in water (10 v/v %) were investigated at three different concentrations (1, 5, and 10 v/v %) of the modifiers in supercritical $CO_2$ (SC-$CO_2$) in order to enhance the supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) efficiency of cephalotaxine from Cephalotaxus wilsoniana Leaves. Among the modifiers employed, methanol basified with diethylamine was found to greatly enhance the extraction efficiency relative to any other modifiers employed. The results suggest that cephalotaxine in plant matrices may be readily changed from SC-$CO_2$-insoluble salt to SC-$CO_2$-soluble free base by basified modifiers. In addition, SC-$CO_2$modified with basified methanol could enhance the extraction efficiency of cephalotaxine more than 30% when compared to the conventional organic solvent extraction.
