  • The SiC-porcelain powder mixtures containing 51.9wt% SiC are produced as by-products from the surface abrasion process of porcelain cores. This raw powders were used as starting materials for the synthesis of SiC containing ceramics. The specimen, which was fired at 135$0^{\circ}C$ from raw powders, had SiC, $Al_{2}O_{3}$, , cristobalite, mullite as crystalline phases, and the fractured microstructure showed dispersed SiC crystalline particles almost wetted with glassy matrix and spherical pores. Although the oxidation of SiC containing powder compacts wetted with glassy matrix and spherical pores. Although the oxidation of SiC containing powder compacts started at the range of 600~80$0^{\circ}C$ form the analysis of weight gain, the presence of $SiO_{2}$ crystallien phase and cristobalite was confirmed at 100$0^{\circ}C$ by XRD analysis. Mullitization of specimens was accelerated by preheating before the final firing. The specimen sintered at 135$0^{\circ}C$ after 100$0^{\circ}C$ preheating consisted of SiC, cristobalite, mullite as crystalline phases, and revealed 2.24g/$cm^{3}$ bulk density, 11.73% water adsorption, porous microstructure with small amount of glassy phase. SiC contents of specimens, which was 51.9 wt% in the raw powders, reduced to 37~22 wt% after firing at 135$0^{\circ}C$ depending on the preheating condition.

  • A natural habitat bacterium, Enterobacter cloaceae K41 was isolated from fresh water plant root and identified. This strain was used to investigate heavy metal resistance. The optimal growth conditions of the bacterium were LB medium containing$1\%$ yeast extract, $1\%$ lactose, $1\%$ NaCl, pH 7.0, at $37^{\circ}C$, and for 24 hours on a shaker. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of heavy metals against E. cloaceae KCTC2519 and E. cloaceae K41 was compared. The MIC of E. cloaceae K41 was 150 ppm in Cu, 50 ppm in Cd whereas that of the standard strain was 50 ppm in Cu but no growth was observed either Cd or two mixed heavy metal solution. The presence of plasmid was cleared from the isolated strain whereas no possession from the standard strain. The plasmid from E. cloaceae K41 was transformed into E. coli $DH5{\alpha}$. The MIC of transformed strain increased resistance 7 times in Cu and 6 times in Cd by insertion of this plasmid. The metal adsorption of the transformant was increased 1.3 times in Cu and 1.5 times in Cd indicating the plasmid was responsible for heavy metal resistance.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the dyeing properties of safflower yellow dye on silk for the standardization of dyeing process and color reproducibility. Yellow colorants were water-extracted from safflower petals, concentrated, and freeze-dried to obtain colorants powder. The effects of dye concentration, dyeing temperature, and pH of dye bath were studied in terms of dye uptake and shade. Fastness to dry cleaning and light was evaluated. Dye uptake increased with raising temperature and brighter and more vivid yellow shade was obtained when dyed at $30^{\circ}C$. As colorants concentration increased, dye uptake increased progressively and the shade got darker and deeper. Maximum color strength was obtained at pH 3.5. It was speculated that the adsorption of colorants seemed to occur mainly by hydrogen bonding and physical force at pH 5.5 and by ionic bonding as well as hydrogen bonding below isoelectric point(pH 3.8-4.0). The results of reproducibility test showed acceptable color difference in the range of $1.11{\sim}2.01$. Washing fastness was fairly good as 4/5 rating, while light fastness was 2/3 rating.

  • The marine microorganism PX-1, which can hydrolyze xylan, was isolated from coastal sea water of Jeju Island, Korea. Based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence and chemotaxonomy analysis, PX-1 was identified as a species of the genus Aestuariibacter and named Aestuariibacter sp PX-1. From the culture broth of PX-1, an extracellular xylanase was purified to homogeneity through ammonium sulfate precipitation and subsequent adsorption chromatography using insoluble xylan. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and gel filtration chromatography estimated the molecular weight of the purified putative xylanase (XylA) as approximately 64 kDa. XylA showed xylanase activity toward beechwood xylan, with a maximum enzymatic activity at pH 6.0 and 45℃. Through thin-layer chromatographic analysis of the xylan hydrolysate produced by XylA, it was confirmed that XylA is an endo-type xylanase that decomposes xylan into xylose and xyloligosaccharides of various lengths. The Km and Vmax values of XylA for beechwood xylan were 27.78 mM and 78.13 μM/min, respectively.

  • As we can see at the oil spill occident on the coast of Taean, the viscosity of the spilled oil becomes thicker as time goes by. It becomes waste oil with the form of tar. It moves to other areas following a tide. When the temperature of the water goes up, the viscosity becomes lighter and forms oil film. It repeats the process spreading to and polluting extensive areas where the tide reaches. People have used hand nets to collect waste oil of tar at the sea. But it is very difficult for them to collect the tar type waste oil spread on large areas before it reaches to the beach. This paper tried to find a way to collect the tar type waste oil efficiently. It used absorption mat of boom type that uses the attachment characteristics of the tar type waste oil and floating waste recovery device of net type. It tested the possibility of using the devices at the oil spill accident on the beach of Taean. The result showed that net type recovery device was much more efficient in collecting the waste oil in short time than the hand net system of people. It confirmed that the net type recovery device could be used to collect tar type waste oil.

  • Zaltoprofen is a propionic acid derivative of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and has been widely used in the treatment of a number of arthritic conditions or lumbago. Zaltoprofen has low water solubility and low bioavailability, therefore great efforts have been devoted to enhance the extent of drug adsorption. In this study, zaltoprofen was formulated into a tablet to enhance the bioavailability and to achieve sustained-release using additives such as lactose monohydrate, carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC). Fourier transform-infrared (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) were employed to study the structure and crystallization of zaltoprofen in the tablet with various contents of additives. It was found that additives had interactions with zaltoprofen and inhibited the crystallization of zaltoprofen. Tablets containing low viscosity HPMC showed a higher release than those containing high viscosity HPMC. Also, as the amount of CMC increased zaltoprofen release increased.

  • Struvite (MgNH4PO4 ⋅ 6H2O) and hydroxyapatite (HAP, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) precipitation in urine-separating toilets (NoMix toilets) causes severe maintenance problems and also reduce the phosphate and calcium content. Application of urine separating technique and extraction of by-products from human urine is a cost effective technique in waste water treatment. In this study, we extract urine calcite from human urine by batch scale method, using urease producing microbes to trigger the precipitation and calcite formation process. Extracted urine calcite (calcining at 800℃) is a potential adsorbent for removal of heavy metal(loid)s like (Cd2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Pb2+, Zn2+ and As3+) along with additional leaching analysis of total nitrogen (T-N), phosphate (T-P) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The transformations of calcite during synthesis were confirm by characterization using XRD, SEM-EDAX and FT-IR techniques. In additional, the phosphate leaching potential and adsorbate (nitrate) efficiency in aqueous solution was investigated using the calcinedurine calcite. The results indicate that the calcite was effectively remove heavy metal(loid)s lead up to 96.8%. In addition, the adsorption capacity (qe) of calcite was calculated and it was found to be 203.64 Pb, 110.96 Cd, 96.02 Zn, 104.2 As, 149.54 Cu and 162.68 Ni mg/g, respectively. Hence, we suggest that the calcite obtain from the human urine will be a suitable absorbent for heavy metal(loid)s removal from aqueous solution.

  • In this study, pyrolyzed oyster shells at a low temperature ($350^{\circ}C$) were applied for a mesocosm experiment to confirm resulting changes in the properties of sediment. After creating a covering of oyster shells, an increase in ORP and decrease in ammonia in the overlying water was observed in an experimental case. The decrease of TOC in this experiment was due to the dilution of organic matter due to the addition of inorganic matter (pyrolyzed oyster shells). The decrease in the concentration of AVS was observed due to the adsorption of AVS by the surface of the oyster shells. From the results obtained in this experiment, it has been concluded that pyrolyzed oyster shells at a low temperature can be used for remediation of polluted sediment.

  • The accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) resulted in the deposition of large quantities of radionuclides over parts of eastern Japan. Radioactive contaminants have been observed over a large area including forests, cities, rivers and lakes. Due to the strong adsorption of radioactive cesium by soil particles, radioactive cesium migrates with the eroded soil, follows the surface flow paths, and is delivered downstream of population-rich regions and eventually to coastal areas. In this study, we developed a model to simulate the transport of contaminated sediment in a watershed hydrological system and this model was compared with observation data from eroded soil observation instruments located at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. Two methods were applied to analyze the soil particle size distribution of the collected soil samples, including standardized sieve analysis and image analysis methods. Numerical models were developed to simulate the movement of soil along with actual rainfall considering initial saturation, rainfall infiltration, multilayer and rain splash. In the 2019 study, a numerical model will be used to add rainfall shield effect by trees, evaporation effect and shield effects of surface water. An eroded soil observation instrument has been installed near the Wolsong nuclear power plant since 2018 and observation data are being continuously collected. Based on these observations data, we will develop the numerical model to analyze long-term behavior of radionuclides on land as they move from land to rivers, lakes and coastal areas.
