  • This paper aims to numerically investigate violent sloshing in a partially filled three-dimensional (3D) prismatic tank with or without a baffle, further to clarify the suppressing performance of the baffle and the damping mechanism of sloshing. The numerical model is based on a Cartesian grid multiphase flow method, and it is well validated by nonlinear sloshing in a 3D rectangular tank with a vertical baffle. Then, sloshing in an unbaffled and baffled prismatic tank is parametrically studied. The effects of chamfered walls on the resonance frequency and the impact pressure are analyzed. The resonance frequencies for the baffled prismatic tank under different water depths and baffle heights are identified. Moreover, we investigated the effects of the baffle on the impact pressure and the free surface elevation. Further, the free surface elevation, pressure and vortex contours are analyzed to clarify the damping mechanism between the baffle and the fluid.

  • This study aims at the development of flood runoff model by comparing and analyzing nonlinear models with linear models in rier basins. The models which are used at the analysis are Nash model and Runoff function method as linear models, and Tank model and Storage function method as nonlinear models. The results, which are obtained from the analysis of these models by using hydrologic data of a representative basin in Nakdong river, Wi-chun basin, show that the peak time, peak flow and flood hydrogrphs by nonlinear models are better than those by linear models in comparison with observed ones, and that nonlinear models are suittable as flood runoff model.

  • In order to control the water quality in rivers or lakes, it is needed to evaluate accurate amount of pollutant loadings from watersheds. The daily pollutant loadings were simulated using the pollutant loading calculation model which was composed of mathematical equations superimposed on the TANK model. The calibration of runoff and pollutant loading parameters were carried out with observed data, using a trial-and-error method. In addition, the proposed model was applied to evaluate its applicability for the representative watershed, the Bokha river watershed, Icheon city, Korea. The parameters of SS and T-P showed large values in the first tank while T-N showed large in the second tank. As a result of simulating the daily pollutant loadings by the pollutant loading calculation model, all of SS, T-N and T-P loadings were increased or decreased according to the amount of runoff discharge. Especially, it was apparent that SS and T-P loadings were significantly influenced by the runoff variation when it was rain. These results could partly explain that SS and T-P would occur mainly from the surface runoff while T-N would occur from both surface and subsurface flow.

  • This study examined the reduction effect of a hydrodynamic force acting on the vertical wall of a portable water storage tank with a convex bottom floor. For the numerical simulation, the linearized Peregrine's equation was used to analyze the lapping waves in the tank caused by water falling from a supplying nozzle. The hydrodynamic force could be calculated by measuring the maximum run-up wave height at the vertical wall. The initial conditions of the numerical experiments were set up by controlling the positions and heights of the water supplying nozzle. Finally, the hydrodynamic force acting on the vertical wall can be reduced by the convex bottom design of the portable water storage tank so it can be applied to improve the structural stability.

  • Preference ordering approach is applied to optimize the parameters of Tank model using multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA). As more than three multi-objective functions are used in MOGA, too many non-dominated optimal solutions would be obtained thus the stakeholder hardly find the best optimal solution. In order to overcome this shortcomings of MOGA, preference ordering method is employed. The number of multi-objective functions in this study is 4 and a single Pareto-optimal solution, which is 2nd order efficiency and 3 degrees preference ordering, is chosen as the most preferred optimal solution. The comparison results among those from Powell method and SGA (simple genetic algorithm), which are single-objective function optimization, and NSGA-II, multi-objective optimization, show that the result from NSGA-II could be reasonalby accepted since the performance of NSGA-II is not deteriorated even though it is applied to the verification period which is totally different from the calibration period for parameter estimation.

  • We are planning to construct a scaled-down moderator facility to simulate the CANDU-6 moderator circulation phenomena during steady state operating and accident conditions. In the present work a preliminary experiment using a 1/40 scaled-down moderator tank has been performed to investigate the anticipated problems of the flow visualization and measurement in the planning scaled-down moderator facility. We shortly describe CFD analysis result for the 1/40 scaled-down test model and the flow measurement techniques used for this test facility under isothermal flow conditions. The Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) method is used to visualize and measure the velocity field of water in a transparent Plexiglas tank. Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) technique is used to evaluate the feasibility of temperature field measurement in the range of $20-40^{\circ}C$ of water temperature using an one-color method.

  • Effective science-based management of the basin water resources requires an understanding of the characteristics of the streams, such as the baseflow discharge. In this study, the base flow was estimated in the two watersheds with the least artificial factors among the Nakdong River watersheds, as determined using the chemical hydrograph separation technique. The 16-year (2004-2019) discontinuous observed stream flow and electrical conductivity data in the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) monitoring network were extended to continuous daily data using the TANK model and the 7-parameter log-linear model combined with the minimum variance unbiased estimator. The annual base flows at the upper Namgang Dam basin and the upper Nakdong River basin were both analyzed to be about 56% of the total annual flow. The monthly base flow ratio showed a high monthly deviation, as it was found to be higher than 0.9 in the dry season and about 0.46 in the rainy season. This is in line with the prevailing common sense notion that in winter, most of the stream flow is base flow, due to the characteristics of the dry season winter in Korea. It is expected that the chemical-based hydrological separation technique involving TANK and the 7-parameter log-linear models used in this study can help quantify the base flow required for systematic watershed water environment management.

  • A scale model net test of the operation of a small two-boat midwater trawl net was performed in the circulating water tank at Pusan Fisheries College. The 1/32 scale model net was constructed after the modelling law of M. Tauti. This type of net is used in Europe for catching sprat like Hering. The net used was 1/32 the actual size. This scale was chosen with consideration for the water tank size. In this experiment, the transfomation of the net shape was observed especially inregard to variations in the height and breadth of the net mouth. These dimensions were varied by changing the breadth of the towing line and the connenting spread.

  • One of the cold start problems of a FCV is the freezing of the water in the water tank when a FCV is not in operation and the surrounding temperature drops below $0^{\circ}C$. The ice in the tank should be melted as quickly as possible for a satisfactory operation of fuel cell vehicles. In this study, the melting process for the constant heat fluxes of the plate heaters was numerically calculated in the 2-D model of the tank and plate heaters. The enthalpy method and FVM code was used for this analysis. The changes of the temperature with heat fluxes and the heat transfer area could be investigated. The energy balance error was found to increase with the heat flux. From this numerical analysis, the proper heat flux value and some important design factors relating local overheating and pressurization of the water tank could be examined.
