The exterior structures of natural organisms have continuously evolved by controlling wettability, such as the Namib Desert beetle, whose back has hydrophilic/hydrophobic contrast for water harvesting by mist condensation in dry desert environments, and some plant leaves that have hierarchical micro/nanostructures to collect or repel liquid water. In this work, we have provided a method for wettability contrast on metals by both nano-flake or needle patterns and tuning of the surface energy. Metals including steel alloys and aluminum were provided with hierarchical micro/nanostructures of metaloxides induced by fluorination and a subsequent catalytic reaction of fluorine ions on metal surfaces in water with various ranges from room to boiling temperature of water. Then, a hydrophobic material was deposited on the structured surfaces, rendering superhydrophobicity. Plasma oxidization induces the formation of superhydrophilic surfaces on selective regions surrounded by superhydrophobic surfaces. We show that wettability contrast surfaces align liquid water within patterned hydrophilic regions during the condensation process. Furthermore, this method could have a greater potential to align other liquids or living cells.

The present study uses an electron beam (e-beam) to modify the wetting characteristics of thermoplastic polymer surfaces. A high energy e-beam irradiated various polymer surfaces (PET, PMMA, and PC), with variations in irradiation time and applied current. The water contact angles were measured on the e-beam irradiated surfaces in order to investigate the changes in the surface energy and the relevant wettability. Furthermore, XPS analyses were performed to investigate the chemical composition change in the e-beam irradiated surfaces; the results showed that the hydrophilic groups (C-O) increased after the electron beam irradiation. Also, water collection tests were performed for various polymer samples in order to investigate the effect of the surface energy on the ability of water collection, from which it can be seen that the irradiated surfaces revealed better water-collecting capability than pure polymer surfaces.
Twenty four thiol-functionalized ionic liquids based on imidazolium cation, 1-(12-mercaptododecyl)-3-alkylimidazolium salts, have been synthesized, and utilized to investigate the effects of alkyl-chain length and anion on the wettability of Au surfaces on the basis of self-assembled monolayers presenting [(CnSAMIM)X], where n = 1-6, X = Br, $BF_4$, $PF_4$ and $NTf_2$. Water wettabilities of the surfaces were measured as a water contact angle by contact angle goniometry. It was found that water wettability of the Au surfaces coated with imidazolium ions was largely dependent not only on counter anions but also on the length of alkyl chains. In the case of SAMs of N-alkylimidazolium ions having short length of N-alkyl chain (C1-$C_4$), anions played great role in determining water wettability of the surfaces.

Superhydrophobic surfaces on alloyed steels were fabricated with a non-conventional method of plasma etching and subsequent water immersion procedure. High aspect ratio nanopatterns of nanoflake or nano-needle were created on the steels with various Cr content in its composition. With CF4 plasma treatment in radio-frequence chemical vapor deposition (r.-f. CVD) method, steel surfaces were etched and fluorinated by CF4 plasma, which induced the nanopattern evolution through the water immersion process. It was found that fluorine ion played a role as a catalyst to form nanopatterns in water elucidated with XPS and TEM analysis. The hierarchical patterns in micro- and nano scale leads to superhydrophobic properties on the surfaces by deposition of a hydrophobic coating with a-C:H:Si:O film deposited with a gas precursor of hexamethlydisiloxane (HMDSO) with its lower surface energy of 24.2 mN/m, similar to that of curticular wax covering lotus surfaces. Since this method is based on plasma dry etching & coating, precise patterning of surface texturing would be potential on steel or metal surfaces. Patterned hydrophobic steel surfaces were demonstrated by mimicking the Robinia pseudoacacia or acacia leaf, on which water was collected from the humid air using a patterned hydrophobicity on the steels. It is expected that this facile, non-toxic and fast technique would accelerate the large-scale production of superhydrophobic engineering materials with industrial applications.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the Nd : YAG laser on the tooth hypersensitivity by the observation of the morphological changes of the dentinal surface irradiated with Nd : YAG laser by use of SEM. In 40 mandibular and maxillary molars without any carious lesion or restoration, severe attrition and abrasion, Enamel was removed with fine grit diamond bur and exposed dentinal surfaces were polished with Soflex discs. In control group (10 teeth), exposed dentinal surfaces were acid-etched with 10 % Maleic acid for 15 seconds. In the experimental group 1 (10 teeth), acid-etched dentinal surfaces with 10% Maleic acid were prepared by Nd : YAG laser (6 watts power, 1 psi water, 18 psi air) for 2 minutes. In the experimental group 2 (10 teeth), exposed dentinal surfaces were irradiated with Nd: YAG laser (10 watts power, 3 psi water, 10 psi air) until the painted black stains on the dentinal surfaces were completely removed. In the experimental group 3 (10 teeth). dentinal surfaces were prepared with Nd : YAG laser (6 watts power, 1 psi water, 18 psi air) until the painted black stanins on them were completely removed and then the irradiated dentinal surfaces were acid-etched with 10 % Maleic acid for 15 seconds. The specimens were routinely processed and observed with scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows : 1. In the irradiated dentinal surfaces, the characteristics of the melting and recrystalization on the dentinal surfaces were observed. Compared with the results in the control group, we could observe that in the irradiated dentinal surfaces, the aperture of the dentinal tubules were reduced and there were more debris obstructing the dentinal tubules. 2. In the irradiated dentinal surfaces, crater structures were commonly present and in the crater bottoms, there were a lot of bead like melted dentin structures, which had the ruptured opening in the center of them. 3. The melted dentins and cracks in the smear layer were less frequently observed in the irradiated dentinal surfaces using copious cooling water than in the irradiated dentinal surfaces using scare cooling water.

Super-hydrophobic surfaces showed that contact angle of water was higher than 140 degrees. That surface could be made several methods such as Carbon nano tubes grown vertically, PDMS asperities arrays, hydrophobic fractal surfaces, and self assembled monolayers coated by CVD and so on. However, we fabricated super-hydrophobic surfaces with plasma treatments which were very cost efficient processes. Their surfaces were characterized by static contact angles, advancing, receding, and stability against UV irradiation. Optimal surfaces showed static contact angles were higher than 150 degrees. Super-hydrophobic property was remained after UV irradiation for one week.
This study investigated the physiological characteristics of biofilm microorganisms formed onto the different drinking water distribution pipe surfaces. The simulated drinking water distribution pipe system which had several PVC, STS 304, and GS coupons was operated at flow velocity of 0.08 m/sec (Re 1,950) and 0.28 m/sec (Re 7,300), respectively. At velocity of 0.08 m/sec, the number of viable heterotrophic bacteria in the biofilm over the 3 months of operation averaged $3.3{\times}10^4$, $8.7{\times}10^4$, and $7.2{\times}10^3CFU/cm^2$ for PVC, STS, and GS surfaces, respectively. The number of attached heterotrophic bacteria averaged $1.4{\times}10^3$, $5.6{\times}10^2$, and $6.5{\times}10^2CFU/cm^2$ on PVC, STS, and GS surfaces at the system with relatively high flow velocity of 0.28m/sec. The changes of physiological profile of biofilm-forming microorganisms were characterized by community-level assay that utilized the Biolog GN microplates. Biofilms that formed on different pipe surfaces displayed distinctive patterns of community-level physiological profile (CLPP), which reflected the metabolic preference for different carbon sources and/or the utilization of these carbon sources to varying degrees. The CLPP patterns have shown that the metabolic potential of a biofilm community was different depending on the pipe material. The effect of the pipe material was also characterized differently by operation condition such as flow rate. At flow velocity of 0.08 m/sec, the metabolic potential of biofilm microorganisms on GS surface showed lower levels than PVC and STS biofilms. For biofilms on pipe material surfaces exposed to water flowing at 0.28 m/sec, the metabolic potential was in order of PVC>GS>STS. Generally, the levels of the bacterial biofilm's metabolic potentials were shown to be notably higher on pipe surfaces exposed to water at 0.08 m/sec when compared to those on pipe surfaces exposed to water at 0.28 m/sec.

The interaction of water molecules with solid surfaces has been a subject of considerable interests, due to its importance in the fields from atmospheric and environmental phenomena to biology, catalysis and electrochemistry [1,2]. Among various kinds of surfaces, a lot of theoretical and experimental studies have been performed regarding water on MgO(100), however, to date, there has been no direct observation of water molecules on MgO by scanning tunneling microscope (STM) as compared with those on metal surface. Here, we will present the direct observation and manipulation of single water molecules on ultrathin MgO(100) films using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (LT-STM) [3]. Our results rationalize the previous theoretical predictions of isolated water molecules on MgO including the optimum adsorption sites and non-dissociative adsorption of water. Moreover, we were able to dissociate a water molecule by exciting the vibrational mode of water, which is unattainable on metal surfaces. The enhanced residual time of tunneling electrons in molecules on the insulating film is responsible for this unique pathway toward dissociation of water.
In this study, to enhance the quality of concrete surface by removing the surplus water, permeable liner attached the euroform was applied for manufacturing concrete specimens. Various kinds of concrete mixtures with different water to binder ratios were applied and the strength properties of the hardened concrete surfaces were evaluated at different heights. Experimental results showed that the rebound values by schmidt hammer test and the compressive strengths on the surfaces of concrete specimens were increased as proportion to the amount of mixture water which is dependent on the water to binder ratio of each concrete mixture, and more enhancements were observed on the middle and lower specimen surfaces than the upper region. SEM analysis also showed that much denser hydrate structures were observed on the specimen surfaces by the application of the permeable liner while similar hydrate formations were occurred regardless of surface treatment conditions. From the MIP test results of the concrete surfaces, it was observed that, by the application of permeable liner, the pore volume below $0.01{\mu}m$ was decreased with a maximum of 50% resulting in the densification of pore structures.
