Dredged silt from reservoirs in southern Taiwan was sintered to make lightweight aggregates (LWA), which were then used to produce high-performance lightweight aggregate concrete (HPLWC). The HPLWC was manufactured using different amounts of mixing water (140, 150, and 160 $kg/m^3$) and LWA of different particle densities (700, 1100, and 1500 $kg/m^3$) at different W/b ratios (0.28, 0.32, and 0.4). Results show that the lightweight aggregates of dredged silt taken in southern Taiwan perform better than the general lightweight aggregates. In addition, the HPLWC possessed high workability with a slump of 230-270 mm, and a slump flow of 450-610 mm, high compressive strength of over 40 MPa after 28 days of curing, good strength efficiency of cement exceeding $0.1MPa/kg/m^3$, low thermal conductivity of 0.4-0.8 $kcal/mh^{\circ}C$, shrinkage of less than $4.8{\times}10^{-4}$, and high electrical resistivity of above 40 $k{\Omega}-cm$. The above findings prove that HPLWC made from dredged silt can help enhance durability of concrete and provide and an ecological alternative use of dredged silt.

In this work a new process was developed for the sulfonation of the chemicallly stable engineering polymer polyethersulfone as membrane materials for electrodialysis or a flow battery applications. Commercially available polyethersulfone polymer was partially sulfonated using a CSA sulfonating agent in a dichloromethane solvent, which sulfonated polyethersulfone with various sulfonation levels have been prepared. Sulfonated polyethersulfone (SPES) membranes with different ion capacities were prepared for the purpose of identifying cation exchange membrane properties, in an attempt to find a low cost replacement for Nafion, which most of the perfluorinated membranes, known to exhibit a prolonged service life, are expensive and difficult to process. The following features were determined: the degree of sulfonation, water uptake, thermal analysis, and electrochemical properties such as ion exchange capacities, resistivity, selectivity of ion permeation. The surface of the cation exchange membranes, decomposed with the H202-treatment, were observed by using scanning electron microscope. The area resistivities of SPES mebranes in 5N-NaOH decreased from $2,150{\;}{\Omega}-cm2$ to less than $15{\Omega}-cm2$ as the ion exchange capacity (IEC) increased from 0.62 to 1.73 millieequivlants per dry gram(meq/dg).eq/dg).
In order to measure steel corrosion in mortar by a transient electro-magnetic (TEM) Method, the development of the sensors have been studied. The sensors were made of enamelled wire with diameter of 0.25mm and Acril. The sensor configuration was used as a coincident loop type. The secondary electro motive force(EMF) was measured with SIROTEM III. The accelerator was equipped with the SIROTEM III. The accelerator permits the transmitter to turn off approximately 10~15 times faster than normal. The high resolution time series used for very shallow or high resistivity investigation was selected. The steels were embedded in mortar which were made from sand : cement : water ratio of 2 : 1: 0.5. The mortar specimen was 50cm long, 20cm wide and 10cm thick. To investigate steel corrosion in mortar, the sensors used were with 2$\times$2$cm^2$(3, 6, 9$\Omega$), 3$\times$3$cm^2$(3, 6, 9$\Omega$) and 6$\times$6$cm^2$(3, 6, 9$\Omega$). The obtained result obtained showed that the sensor 8(6$\times$6$cm^2$, 6$\Omega$) was the proper sensor for the measurement of steel corrosion in mortar.

Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS) is widely used as an effective partial cement replacement material. GGBFS inclusion has already been proven to improve several performance characteristics of concrete. GGBFS provides enhanced durability, including high resistance to chloride penetration and protection against alkali silica reaction. In this paper results of an experimental research work on influence of low-reactivity GGBFS (which is largely available in Iran) on the properties of mortars and concretes are reported. In the first stage, influence of GGBFS replacement level and fineness on the compressive strength of mortars was investigated using Taguchi method. The analysis of mean (ANOM) statistical approach was also adopted to develop the optimal conditions. Next, based on the obtained results, concrete mixtures were designed and water penetration, capillary absorption, surface resistivity, and compressive strength tests were carried out on highstrength concrete specimens at different ages up to 90 days. The results indicated that 7-day compressive strength is adversely affected by GGBFS inclusion, while the negative effect is less evident at later ages. Also, it was inferred that use of low-reactivity GGBFS (at moderate levels such as 20% and 30%) can enhance the impermeability of high-strength concrete since 28 days age.
The principal factor determining an optimum design method for cathodic protection is finding the protection current for preventing the corrosion of existing, already laid pipe. Some factors currently used to test designs include the sizes and lengths of pipes, soil resistivity, and the coating damage rate. We believe this method and current formulae are not optimum due to the uncertainty of determining the coating damage rate and the corrosion protection current's density. This paper analyzes the amount of protection current obtained by performing a temporary current test using data describing existing laid pipe. We then propose determining the corrosion protection current by using the temporary current test after modifying the formula. In addition, we suggest a way to choose optimized cathodic protection and the process of design by executing the design and taking account of such factors as a site condition of 34km-long non-protected water supply pipe lines (stages I and II) in ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ region, climate, interferences, and durability.

In this article, we investigated the various influencing factors that degraded the lifetime of suspension insulators in 154 kV transmission lines, and showed the possible solutions to avoid such breakdowns. With respect to achieve safety, reliability and aesthetical considerations, the characteristics of transmission and distribution network power cables should be improved. Suspension insulators are particularly important to study, as they have developed to be the main component of transmission lines due to their ability to withstand the electrical conductivity of high-voltage power transmission. Suspension insulators are mostly made from glass, rubber and ceramic material due to their high resistivity. In Korea, porcelain suspension insulators are typically used in the transmission line system, as they are cheaper and more flexible compared to other types of insulators. This is effective from preventing very high and steep lightening impulse voltages from causing the breakdown of suspension insulators used in power lines. Other influential factors affect the lifetime of suspension insulators that we studied include temperature, water moisture, contamination, mechanical vibration and electrical stress.
Concrete tracks are superior to ballast tracks in the aspect of durability, maintenance and safety. However, deteriorated stiffness of railroad bed and settlement of soft ground induced by trapped or seepage water lead to problems in safety of train operation. In this research, characteristic stiffness of concrete tracks, which is determined from FRACTAL (Flexural-Rigidity Assessment of Concrete Tracks by Antisymmetric Lamb Waves) technique, was employed as an index of track displacement. The characteristic stiffness is defined using Poisson's ratio, moment of inertia and stiffness ratio of subgrade to slab. To verify validity and reliability of the proposed characteristic stiffness, experimental and theoretical researches were performed. Feasibility of the characteristic stiffness based on FRACTAL technique was proved at a real concrete track for Korean high-speed trains. Validity of the FRACTAL technique was also verified by comparing the results of impulse-response tests performed at the same measurement array and the results of SASW tests and DC resistivity survey performed at a shoulder nearby the track.
This study focused on the influences regarding the use of polyepoxide-based polymer and silica fume (SF) on the fresh and hardened state properties of self-compacting lightweight concrete (SCLC) along with their impacts on electrical resistance and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV). To do so, two series of compositions each of which consists of twelve mixes, with water to binder (W/B) ratios of 0.35 and 0.4 were cast. Three different silica fume/binder ratios of 0, 5%, and 10% were considered along with four different polymer/binder ratios of 0, 5%, 10%, and 15%. Afterwards, the rupture modulus, tensile strength, 14-day, 28-day, and 90-day compressive strength, the UPV and the electrical resistance of the mixes were tested. The results indicated that although the use of polymer could enhance the passing and filling abilities, it could lead to a decrease of segregation resistance. In addition, the interaction of the SF and the polymeric contents enhanced the workability. However, the impacts regarding the use of polymeric contents on fresh state properties of SCLC were more prevalent than those regarding the use of SF. Besides the fresh state properties, the durability and mechanical properties of the mixes were affected due to the use of polymeric and SF contents. In other words, the use of the SF and the polymer enhanced the durability and mechanical properties of SCLC specimens.
