  • In this study, the model which can predict the quality of effluent has been implemented through multiple regression analysis to use operation data of a sewage treatment plant, to which a media process is applied. Multiple regression analysis were carried out by cases according to variable selection method, removal of outliers and log transformation of variables, with using data of one year of 2011. By reviewing the results of predictable models, the accuracy of prediction for $COD_{Mn}$ of treated water of secondary clarifiers was over 0.87 and for T-N was over 0.81. Using this model, it is expected to set the range of operating conditions that do not exceed the standards of effluent quality. In conclusion, the proper guidance on the effluent quality and energy costs within the operating range is expected to be provided to operators.

  • This study was initiated to identify groundwater quality and contamination at present in the 'A' section of Seoul Metropolitan Subway. Groundwater samples were collected at 21 boreholes along the 'A' section and appeared to show mainly $Ca-HCO_3$ type. In 20 samples, concentration of $SO_4$, Cd, Pb, Fe, Mn, Al, F and $NO_3-N$ were higher than those of Korean drinking water quality standards. From chemical data and saturation Indices, contaminant sources of individual chemical elements were inferred to be buried wastes and surface sediments over the study area. The result of factor analysis suggested that the pollution factor should account for about 47% of data variation.

  • This study investigated how the indicators of quality control are improved by proficiency in the measurement of phosphate concentration. In addition, analysis equipments were to be compared to see if there were any differences in measurements depending on the type of analysis device. In order to find out the effect of the proficiency of the analyst on the analysis results, three analysts measured phosphate concentration seven times in accordance with the Korean water pollution test standards, and met the quality control indices if repeated more than five times. The limit of quantification for phosphate was calculated at 0.02 mg/L. If the analysis devices are different, the absorbance and concentration of the samples near the limit of quantification are statistically significant difference.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the need for heating wastewater to enhance treatment efficiency of organic matter (BOD, SS) during cold winter in newly developed Absorbent Biofilter System (ABS) which was established in the Suwon Campus of the Seoul National University. Treatments consisted of non-heating (2000 year) and heating(2001, 2002 year), and sampled data were analyzed during cold winter period as well as post winter period to investigate the influence of heating after winter season. Even the average air temperature showed only $0.4^{\circ}C$ difference between two experimental years, the difference in the average effluent temperature during cold winter period between heating and non-heating experiment was approximately $11^{\circ}C$. The average effluent concentration of organic matter in non-heating treatment exceeded the Korean standards for water quality of discharged effluent in riparian area (BOD and SS 10 mg/L); however, the standards were met in case of heating treatment during both winter and post winter period. Therefore, the need fur heating wastewater during cold winter season in ABS was justified. On the other hand, there was no improvement of treatment efficiency in T-N and T-p, but we observed the more activated nitrification as increasing the wastewater temperature. Because the average underground temperature was $5^{\circ}C$ higher than the average air temperature during cold winter period, we recommend that the ABS can be established in the underground rather than on-ground for saving the heating cost.

  • A novel process has successfully been developed by overcoming major difficulties through the elimination of number of process steps involved in the Classical Transesterification reaction during the preparation of Fatty Acid Methyl/Ethyl Ester (FAME.FAEE) called biodiesel. The Classical process with cost intensive process steps such as the utilization of excess alcohol, needing downstream distillation for the recovery and reutilization of excess alcohol/cosolvent, unrecoverable homogenous catalyst which consumes vast quantity of fresh distilled water during the purification of the product and downstream waste water treatment before its safe disposal to the surface water body. The Novel Process FAME/FAEE is produced from any vegetable oil irrespective of edible or inedible variety using sonication energy. The novelty of the finding is the use of only theoretical quantity of alcohol along with a co-solvent and reduced quantity of homogeneous catalyst. Under this condition neither the homogeneous catalyst goes to the FAME layer nor is the distillation needed. The same ester also has been prepared in high pressure high temperature reactor without using catalyst at sub critical temperature. The quality of prepared biodiesel without involving any purification step meets the ASTM standards. Blended Biodiesel with Common Diesel Fuel (CDF) and FAME is prepared, characterized and used as fuel in the Kirloskar make CI Engines. The evaluation of the engine performance result of pure CDF, B05 biodiesel, B10 biodiesel of all types of biodiesel prepared by using the feedstock of Soybean (Glycine max) and Karanja (Pongamia pinnate) oil along with their mixed oil provides useful information such as brake power, brake thermal efficiency, brake specific fuel consumption, etc, and established it as ideal fuel for unmodified CI engine.

  • This study was to evaluate the ozone oxidation of dissolved Fe, Mn, $SO{_4}^{2-}$ ions and color in abandoned mining drainage by conducting a bench-scale operation at various reaction times in an ozone reactor. The influent was collected from an abandoned mine drainage (AMD) near the J Mine in Jungsungun, Kangwon Province. The ozone reactor was operated at ozone reaction times of 10, 20 and 30 min with ozone doses of 0.0 and $2.4g\;O_3/hr$. Samples from each effluent from subsequent sand filtration were regularly collected and analyzed for pH, Fe, Mn, Al, Cr, Hg, $SO{_4}^{2-}$, alkalinity, color, ORP, TDS and EC. The effluent concentrations of Fe and Mn from the sand filter were less than 0.1 mg/L, which were below the concentrations on Korean drinking water quality standards (Fe, Mn < 0.30 mg/L). The influent $SO{_4}^{2-}$, concentrations were not noticeably changed during this ozone oxidation. Cr and Hg in the raw wastewater from the abandoned mining drainage were not detected in this study. The experimental result shows that the ozone oxidation of dissolved heavy metals and subsequent sand filtration of metal precipitates are desirable alternative for removing heavy metals in AMD.

  • Appropriate removal of pollutants from combined sewer overflows(CSOs) and stormwater runoff is of primary concern to watershed managers trying to meet water quality standards even under a wet weather condition. Harmful substances associated with particles besides TSS and BOD are subjected to removal prior to discharge into the natural waters. Effectiveness of five major hydrodynamic separation technologies, Vortechs, Downstream Defender including Storm King for CSOs control, CDS, Stormceptor, and IHS, were evaluated in this study. There is not sufficient information for accurate evaluation of the removal efficiency for the pollutants from the stormwater runoff and CSOs. Based upon limited engineering data, however, all technologies were found to be effective in separation of heavy particles and floating solids. Technologies utilizing screens seem to have advantage in the treatment capacity than the other technologies relied fully on hydrodynamic behavior. The IHS system seems to have a strong potential in application for control of CSOs because of unique hydrodynamic behavior as well as a flexibility in opening size of the screens. Size of the particulate matter in the CSOs and stormwater runoff is found to be the most important parameter in selection of the type of the hydrodynamic separators. There exists an upper limit in the solids removal efficiency of a hydrodynamic separator, which is strongly dependent upon the particle size distribution of the CSOs and stormwater runoff.

  • Excess N and P from the livestock manure applied to farmlands, have entered the water systems and poses a serious threat to the natural environment. Consequently, there has been recent awareness towards the management of livestock manure and its related fields. In this study, piggery wastewater was collected from a piggery in Pohang city, Korea. At 800℃, thermal decomposition of a natural stone, magnesite (MgCO3), yielded powered MgO with particle sizes ranging between 10 to 100 ㎛. Furthermore, NH4+-N and PO43--P were recovered as struvite precipitates from the piggery wastewater, by adjusting the pH with MgO and H3PO4. At pH 10, the recovery efficiencies of NH4+-N and PO43--P were found to be 86.1% and 94.1%, respectively. Using an X-ray Diffractometer (XRD), the struvite in the precipitate was confirmed to be consistent with standard pure struvite. Further, the purity of the struvite precipitate was analyzed using an energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and thermal gravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), and found to be between 79.2% and 93.0%. Additionally, struvite-containing piggery wastewater and sawdust were mixed in a weight ratio of 2.5:1 and processed into a mature compost. The newly manufactured compost passed all quality standards required for first-class graded livestock composts. Moreover, this compost was sprayed directly onto the soil at the test site, and various parameters of the soil's effluent, such as total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (T-N), total phosphorus (T-P), and dissolved oxygen (DO), were analyzed and measured. Based on these results, it is determined that the newly manufactured compost can more significantly reduce water pollution than commercial compost.

  • For successful waterproofing construction, it is very important to secure construction quality as well as material performance of waterproofing materials used in construction. Due to the long-term cost reduction policy following the economic downturn in the construction market, most construction companies are using general low-priced waterproof materials rather than high-quality waterproof materials without clear quality control standards. Without clear education on construction, construction is being carried out with meaning only on construction activities. In addition, the waterproofing method applied in combination is a situation where water leakage occurs due to waterproofing failure due to insufficient construction quality because the construction method is complicated. Therefore, it is necessary to review the quality control measures(design, materials, construction) for successful waterproofing work and improve problems that are derived so that stable waterproofing work can be done. In order to expect the leakage prevention effect of a building, first, it is required to select appropriate materials for each part of the building and environment in the design stage, and the selected materials must satisfy all items of the Korean Industrial Standard(KS). Second, to secure the quality of waterproofing construction, sincere construction by workers is required. In this paper, we tried to describe "review of waterproof design", "constructor education", "site inspection", and "criticism(correction/supplementation)" as quality control measures after material selection.

  • For effective implementation of total maximum daily load (TMDL), this study presented the improving plans of non-point source pollution management including the classification of non-point source pollution, calculation of non-point source pollution load (generated, discharged), selection of non-point source pollution management regions and management of non-point source pollutant. First of all, the definition of point source pollution and non-point source pollution based on the legal and scientific viewpoint should be precisely classified and managed. Especially, the forest, grassland and river without occurrence of environmental damage by activity of business and human should be separately classified natural background pollutants. The unit for generated and discharged non-point source pollution should be preferentially changed according to actual condition of watershed. The calculation methods of generated and discharged non-point source pollution should be corrected consideration on the amount and duration of rainfall. While the TMDL is implemented, non-point source pollution management regions should be selected in the watersheds exceed the targeted water quality standards by the rainfall. The non-point source pollution management regions should be selected in the minimal regions where have high values of discharged non-point source pollution density in the urban area, farmland and site area except forest, grassland in the whole watershed. The non-point source pollutant treatment facilities, which take into consideration non-point source pollution load per unit area, duration of the excess concentration, realizable possibility of treatment, effectiveness of treatment cost versus point source pollutant, should be established in the regions with a large generated non-point source pollution load and a high concentration of water quality exceed the targeted water quality standards by the rainfall.
