A Study on Coagulation and MF Membrane Process for the Reuse of Sewage Effluent (하수처리장 방류수의 응집 및 정밀여과 처리공정에 관한 연구)

  • Prior to the study of the sewage treatment methods, water quality for Gwangju sewage of fluent was investigated from January to December, 2004 for sewage water reuse. Monthly mean values of BOD, SS, turbidity, total phosphorus and color were 4.1 mg/L, 2.9 mg/L, 0.8 NTU, 1.3 mg/L, and 27 unit, respectively. Jar-test was performed to investigate the removal efficiency of pollutants under the coagulation conditions of fast mixing for 5 min, slow mixing for 15 min and precipitation for 1hr. Here, alum and polyaluminium chloride (PAC) were used as coagulants to reduce color, turbidity, total phosphorus (TP) and total organic carbon (TOC) in sewage effluents. The results showed that PAC gave better efficiency in removing turbidity and dissolved phosphorus than alum. It was also found from the relative molecular weight (RMW) distribution analysis that organic matter over 1,000 Dalton (Da) was easily removed by coagulation and subsequently MF treatment, while it was not effective for less than 500 Da. Based on tis result, Natural organic matter (NOM) with lower molecular weight (< 500 Da) may cause harmful disinfectant by-product (DBP) after chlorine treatment. Thus, activated carbon adsorption seems to be required for the complete removal of DBP in the hybrid system.

  • The sauce is very important to western dishes and also to value and relish of dishes because taste, appearance and the degree of water content are determined by sauce. Also, the taste derived from major sauce like a demi-glace and the basic sauce that affects cooking quality are highly recognized, but preference analyses of source and researches on each ingredients have not been performed up to now. Until today, sauces act as lubricants which add relish to dishes and aid digestion, so the importance of source is more emphasized to raise the taste, appearance, water content and specially healthy function of main ingredients. In this research, some problems of sauce itself and possibilities of improvement was grasped and then some remedies were suggested through the preference, variety and quantity analyses of demi-glace sauce practically used in hotels and restaurants around Gwang-Ju City and South Jeolla(Chon-Nam) Province. Finally, the volume of demi-glace sauce with various ingredients was suggested for various kinds of application. Through the actual proof analysis, preference of each sauce made from various kinds of ingredients was investigated. The result shows that the sauce made from beef bone is highly preferred, followed by pork bone and lamb bone. The least preferred is chicken bone.

Characterization of Forest Fire Emissions and Their Possible Toxicological Impacts on Human Health

  • In flight particulate matter particularly emissions generated by incomplete combustion processes has become a subject of global concern due to the health problems and environmental impacts associated with them. This has compelled most countries to set standards for coarse and fine particles due to their conspicuous impacts on environment and public health. This contribution therefore explores forest fire emissions and how its particulates affects air quality, damage to vegetation, water bodies and biological functions as architects for lung diseases and other degenerative illnesses such as oxidative stress and aging. Soot was collected from simulated forest fire using a clean glass surface and carefully transferred into amber vials for analysis. Volatile components of soot were collected over 10 mL dichloromethane and analyzed using a QTOF Premier-Water Corp Liquid Chromatography hyphenated to a mass selective detector (MSD), and Gas Chromatograph coupled to a mass spectrometer (GC-MS). To characterize the size and surface morphology of soot, a scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used. The characterization of molecular volatiles from simulated forest fire emissions revealed long chain compounds including octadec-9-enoic acid, octadec-6-enoic acid, cyclotetracosane, cyclotetradecane, and a few aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene and naphthalene). Special classes of organics (dibenzo-p-dioxin and 2H-benzopyran) were also detected as minor products. Dibenzo-p-dioxin for instance in chlorinated form is one of the deadliest environmental organic toxins. The average particulate size of emissions using SEM was found to be $11.51{\pm}4.91{\mu}m$. This study has shown that most of the emissions from simulated forest fire fall within $PM_{10}$ particulate size. The molecular by-products of forest fire and particulate emissions may be toxic to both human and natural ecosystems, and are possible precursors for various respiratory ailments and cancers. The burning of a forest by natural disasters or man-made fires results in the destruction of natural habitats and serious air pollution.

  • Squid by-product like viscera has just been recognized as one of the serious pollutants on the surrounding marine environment in Ulleung island of Korea. The effect as a marine pollutant, however, has not been examined and evaluated properly. It was carried out the comprehensive examination of the marine pollution by disposing squid by-products. The sediments and water qualities were investigated in several positions, including the dumping position around Ulleung island. It is also estimated a spreading of by-product in terms of estimating the sinking speed and evaluating the attracting characteristics as a feed. As a result, There were no significant pollutions of the sediment and water quality. The spreading of by-product by the local current was 2-2.5 times of the depth, and it will become longer in spring tide. It was confirmed that the squid by-product has attracting ability for local fish by acoustical survey. Furthermore, it can be useful for the local fish species as feeds.

The Study on Flora and Distribution Characteristics of Orchidaceae on Moor

  • Total 7 moors, Yong-neup on Mt. Daeam, Chilbo Mt. moor, Dogapsa-neup on Mt. Wolchul, Wangdeungiae-neup on Mt. Jiri, Mujechi-neup on Mt. Jungjok, Buljae-neup on Mt. Kyungak and Geoinri-neup on Dongsang, were investigated by literatures and survey. Distribution, conditions, and similarity of dominant species and Orchidaceae on moor were analyzed. The results are follows; There are total 46 wetland plant species observed more than twice from 7 moors. The plants classified as constancy class V, which are appeared more than 80%, are Iris ensata var. spontane, Juncus effusus var. decipiens, Sanguisorba tenuifolia var. alba, Habenaria linearifolia, Sium ninsi, Lobelia sessilifolia, Lastrea theiyptoris, and Eupatorium chinensis var. simplicifolium. Highly appearing Orchidaceae, which was classified to constancy class IV plant, are Habenaria linearifolia, Pogonia japonica, Eipactis thunbergii, and Platanthera mandarinorum. They are the typical index plants of the moors. Habitual environment of Habenaria radiate and Platanthera hologlottis can be affected by environmental aspects such as latitude, altitude and the water quality. However those of Habenaria linearifolia, Epipactis thunbergii, and Pogonia japonica are not affected by latitude and altitude, but may be determined by water condition of wetland. As the result of similarity index analysis for appearance of Orchidaceae identifying each moors in the view of species composition, swamps at Dogapsa-neup and Buljae-neup are very similar. However Yong-neup is totally different from those of Dogapsa-neup and Buljae-neup. Yong-neup had shown the high similarity indices of 0.85 and 0.75 with Wangdeungiae-neup and Mujechi-neup, respectively. Growth properties of wild Orchidaceae at wetland were almost similar. Platanthera mandarinorum and Liparis kumokiri had characteristics of good adaptability. Most of them need light. Pogonia was the only long-day plant. The flowering time of these Orchidaceae was from May to September.

  • The hot-stamping technique is used to manufacture high-strength parts by press forming by heating at a temperature above the Austenite transformation temperature and then rapid cooling. Boron steel, which contains a very small amount of boron, is one of the materials used for hot stamping. The purpose of this study is to show the microstructures and to investigate the mechanical properties under different heat-treatment conditions. The heat treatment of water quenching was conducted at the various temperatures and different elapsed times. These can be practical data useful when boron steels are used for hot stamping. Furthermore, the microstructures and mechanical properties of the spot-welded specimen with coatings and counterpart materials (SPRC 340, SPRC 590) is investigated in order to determine the welding characteristics of boron steel at different welding condition.

  • In this study, the optimum analytical conditions for determination of distribution of propylene oxide in a nonionic surfactant and separation of fatty alcohols were investigated by Reversed Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography. To analyse the distribution of propylene oxide (PO) and carbon chain length of a fatty alcohol, we derivatized samples for the purpose of using a UV detector. Also, we studied the influences of columns and mobile phase composition to obtain the optimum separation conditions. In our experiment, Waters Symmetry $C_8(3.9{\times}150mm)$ column was used. And the optimum condition were obtained by gradient elution with methanol and water as the mobile phase. In the plot of log k' vs composition of water in the binary phase, the linerality was very good. We ploted the calibration curve to conform the quality of fatty alcohol, a good linerality was obtained.

Physicochemical properties analysis of bamboo salt on chicken emulsion sausage

  • Quality characteristics of chicken emulsion sausage manufactured with various levels of NaCl and 9 times heated bamboo salt (0.3%, 0.6%, 0.9%, and 1.2% respectively) were examined. The pH value of chicken emulsion sausage was increase tendency with increasing amount of bamboo salt, on the contrary in case of NaCl sample were decrease tendency with increasing amount of NaCl. Both before and after heating, redness of chicken emulsion sausage with bamboo salt treatments were upward trend with increasing amount of bamboo salt. water holding capacity (WHC) of 1.2% NaCl sample was significantly higher than 0.3%-0.9% (p < 0.05), but 0.9%, 1.2% bamboo salt samples were significantly higher than 0.3, 0.6 % (p < 0.05). Water loss of 1.2% NaCl and 0.9% bamboo salt samples were significantly lower than other treatment (p < 0.05). Protein solubility values significantly increased amount of bamboo salt and NaCl (p < 0.05), and samples of 0.9% NaCl and 0.6% bamboo salt values show similar values. Cooking yield of samples were increased tendency with increasing amount of NaCl and bamboo salt. Also viscosity values of sample containing 1.2% bamboo salt sample showed higher viscosity than other treatments. These results show that containing 1.2% NaCl chicken emulsion sausage and 0.9% bamboo salt chicken emulsion sausage were similar physicochemical properties. Therefore, bamboo salt is suitable for manufacturing chicken emulsion sausage.

  • Diet exerts a major stress on the body and may affect gene expression and physiological functions. Understanding of cellular responses during starvation is necessary in developing strategies to reduce damage caused by diet. In this study, we isolated 10 genes (Comt, RGN, Scd1, Temt, Idi1, Fabp5, Car3, Cyp2c70, Pinx1, and Poldip3) that are down-regulated in starvation and are closely related to liver metabolism. Water supply during starvation had no effect on the induction of apoptosis, autophagy, and ERQC. The genes down-regulated by starvation were associated with many related pathways rather than limited to the liver homeostasis pathway. Water supply during starvation is important. However, maintaining NaCl homeostasis is more important. The results are thought to be closely related to gender-specific metabolism in starvation and NaCl.

Comparative Analysis of Best Available Techniques Reference Documents on the Fertilizer Manufacture between Korea and European Union (비료제조업의 국내와 EU 최적가용기법 기준서 비교·분석)

  • The integrated permit system is applied to class 1 and 2 atmospheric and water pollutant discharge facilities in 19 sectors. The fertilizer sector should receive a permit for a period of four years, from 2019 to 2023. The purpose of this study is to investigate the differences between the Korean Best Available Techniques (BAT) reference document (K-BREF) and the European Union BAT reference document (EU-BREF) in terms of the process and emission characteristics of fertilizer manufacture. K-BREF is written by focusing on products, whereas EU-BREF is produced on focusing on manufacture process. There are five types of BATs(best available techniques economically achievable) in Korea. These BATs selected mainly to recover and reuse raw meterials and save energy. The number of BATs and BAT-AELs(BAT associated emission level) in K-BREF is smaller than that in EU-BREF. We suggest that BATs and those environmental management parameters in Korea need to further reflect the emission characteristics in the fertilizer sector.
