Aluminum flows into the river from the abandoned mine leachate, industrial wastewater, and sewage and is responsible for acute toxicity in aquatic organisms. Recently, the number of reports have indicated the increased toxicity in a variety of aquatic organisms' due to the aluminum toxicity. In this study, we reviewed the toxicity of aluminum on aquatic invertebrates, fishes and amphibians and suggested the guideline for management of aluminum residues in aquatic environment and strategies for aluminum toxicity evaluation. In aquatic animals aluminum complexes evoke gill dysfunction primarily, the cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, oxidative stress, disruption of endocrine function, reproductive success, metabolism and homeostasis. Notably, at environmentally relevant concentration, aluminum complex can alter the hormone levels in fish in acidic condition. Further, since the solubility of aluminum is higher in the acidic and basic conditions, thus it is likely that the toxic effects of aluminum may not only occur in acidic water near the abandoned mines but also in lakes and rivers, where pH is raised by algal bloom.

The event-based agricultural non-point source(AGNPS) pollution model was applied to estimate the loads of nitrogen and phosphorus in a stream draining small agricultural watersheds. Calibration and verification of the model were performed using observed data collected from rainfall events in the Imgo watersheds during 1997-1998. Parameter calibrations were made for the runoff curve number. The peak flow volumes in the watersheds were well reproduced by the modified model. Average deviation between observed and simulated values was 10%, and this match was confirmed by the coefficient of efficiency value of 0.97. The deviations tended to increase as the peak flows increased. The simulated total N concentrations in the stream water were fairly close to the measured values, and the coefficient of efficiency in the estimation was 0.93. However, there were relatively large variations between calculated and observed values of total P concentration, and the coefficient of efficiency in the estimation was 0.74. Any inaccuracies that arise in estimating runoff flow and nutrient loading can not be explained exactly and further adjustment and refinements may be needed for application of AGNPS in agricultural watersheds. With this restrictions in mind, it can be concluded that AGNPS can provide realistic estimates of nonpoint source nutrient yields.

The descendants of Jang, Chang-woo(張昌雨) reconstructed the Mangwijung (晩歸亭), which is currently located at Seha-dong, Seo-gu, Gangju Metropolitan City, in the context of succeeding the work of their ancestor. This study investigated the management viewpoint of Mangwijung that has been altered in going through the reconstruction and repairs processes, and examined the chronological history for a landscape of the Mangwijung Garden. First, in the Mangwijung Garden, three gazebos such as Mangwijung, Seubhyanggag(襲香閣) and Mukamjeongsa(墨庵精舍) stand in a row with three bridges between each of them in the middle of a wide pond. This is a group of gazebos that is a quite unique structure. Second, Hyowoodang(孝友堂) Jang, Chang-woo (張昌雨) built Mangwijung as a role of thatched cottage in order to teach younger students and enjoy the arts in his later life. The Mangwijung was reconstructed by the descendants of Jang, Chang-woo at the collapsed place later on in order to commemorate the achievements of their ancestor. By the way, it was revealed that the management of Mangwijung has been altered during the process of reconstruction. Third, when comparing the current appearance with those depicted in the 8 scenic views(八景) by Jang, Chang-woo and the literary works of his descendants, it was confirmed that the landscape and shape of the pond were damaged due to a road expansion caused by a construction of Seubhyanggag and Mukamjeongsa as well as an advancement of the city. Fourth, it is speculated that the pond of Mangwijung Garden is probably a spring not a reservoir to store the water stream that flows in.

To determine the concentrations and the mass flow of selected 10 perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), a field study was conducted in a wastewater treatment plant. Raw influent, primary influent, primary effluent, aeration tank effluent, secondary effluent, final effluent, dehydration liquor, primary sludge, thickened sludge, final sludge were collected over 3 days in the summer and the winter respectively. Collected samples were equally mixed and then served as an analytical sample. Total 10 compounds were analyzed. In terms of treated water, the concentration of perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) were in range of N.D.~26.29 ng/L and N.D.~38.15 ng/L respectively. Perfluorononanoate (PFNA) and perfluorohexanesulfonate (PFHxS) were ranged from N.D. to 36.79 ng/L and from N.D. to 24.36 ng/L. In terms of sludges, a concentration of PFOS, PFOA, and perfluorodecanesulfonate (PFDS) were detected from 6.82 to 59.37 ng/g, from 0.13 to 0.37 ng/g, from N.D. to 0.83 ng/g respectively. Mass loading for PFCs increased during wastewater treatment except for PFNA. The observed increase in mass flow of PFCs may have resulted from biodegradation of precursor compounds.
In this study, we attempted to develop a watershed runoff index subject to main control points by dividing the Geum River basin into 14 sub-basins. The Yongdam multipurpose dam Daecheong multipurpose dam and Gongju gage station were selected to serve as the main control points of the Geum River basin, and the observed flow of each control point was calculated by the discharge rating curve, whereas the simulated flow was estimated using the Rainfall Runoff Forecasting System (RRFS), user-interfaced software developed by the Korea Water Corporation, based on the Streamflow Synthesis and Reservoir Regulation (SSARR) model developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers. This study consisted of the daily unit observed flow and the simulated flow of the accumulated moving average flow by daily, 5-days, 10-days, monthly, quarterly and annually, and normal monthly/annually flow. We also performed flow duration analysis for each of the accumulated moving average and the normal monthly/annually flows by unit period, and abundant flow, ordinary flow, low flow and drought flow estimated by each flow duration analysis were utilized as watershed runoff index by main control points. Further, as we determined the current flow by unit period and the normal monthly/annually flow through the drought and flood flow analysis subject to each flow we were able to develop the watershed runoff index in a system that can be used to determine the abundance and scarcity of the flow at the corresponding point.

Nowadays, flood hazard maps have been generated to minimize the damages from the flooding. To generate such flood hazard maps, LiDAR data can be used as data source with higher data accuracy. LiDAR data, however, requires relatively higher cost and longer processing time. In this background, this study proposed DEM generation using NGIS digital topographic maps. For that, breaklines were processed to count directions of water flows. In addition, the river profile data, unique data source to represent real topography of the river area, were integrated to the breaklines to generate DEM. City of Kuri in Kyunggi Province was selected for this study and 1:1,000 and 1:5,000 topographic maps were integrated to process breaklines and river profile data were also linked to generate DEM. The generated DEM showed relatively lower vertical accuracy from mixing 1:1,000 and 1:5,000 topographic maps since 1:1,000 topographic maps were not available for some portion of the area. However, the DEM generated demonstrated reasonable accuracy and resolution for flood map generation as well as higher cost saving effects. On the contrary, for more efficient utilization of NGIS topographic maps, periodic map updating needs to be made including technical consideration in building breaklines and applying interpolation methods.

Seokgasan which is artificial rock mountain had been developed into one of the axes of traditional rock landscape of Goryo period and Joseon period as the central component of Korean traditional landscaping, but the legacy was cut off at the present. In the middle of the Goryo period, the Seokgasan made by piling rocks which were started from replicating miniature landscape has been developed into presenting the symbol and Seokgasan so it faced the new transition period of traditional rock garden culture. Seokgasan so it as small knoll, the Korean traditional Seokgasan was made differently the the surrounding landscape with big Seokgasan in China which overwhelms so it harmonize the surrounding landscape to build Korean style of the Seokgasan. This study is the objective investigation based on the old literature and the field remains, so it aims to so it comprehend the type of Seokgasan and developmental forms. At the result of investigation, 5 types of Seokgasan such as rocks piling on a pond, piling rocks, rocks in a pond, rocks on a ground, rock in a pot etc. has been developing in addition to the rocks which the oddly shaped rock is piled up as the basic framework. Among those, the piling rocks on a pond of Seokgasan which means water flows in Seokgasan is the representative Seokgasan which has been continued since the middle of the Goryo period until the end of the Joseon period. This study is expected to be the foundation which will succeed to legacy of Seokgasan tradition which was cut off and to develop by recovering historical landscaping value and identity of Seokgasan.
The purpose of this study is to develop an earth leakage alarm circuit breaker, equipped with a leakage alarming function (JER-E2S, ETECKOREA Co., Korea), and to analyze its characteristics. The developed mechanism is exclusively used for single-phase and 220 V circuits, with a rated current of 32 A, 20 A, 20 A (for restrooms), 16 A, etc. It satisfies all characteristics of existing earth leakage circuit breakers (ELB). If a fire current, which is a resistive leakage current (Igr), flows through an electric line, the device detects the leakage current in real time and warns against the leakage through a blinking LED lamp. Since the developed device displays a tolerance to a capacitative leakage current (Igc) that inevitably occurs in LED lamps, communication devices, etc., it ensures a stable power supply. In addition, the earth leakage alarm circuit breaker protects against power failure due to a momentary ground fault. Therefore, it can supply power without the risk of the circuit breaker malfunctioning due to a momentary ground fault caused by water droplets, leaves, etc. Moreover, with a standby power of less than 0.1 W, the developed earth leakage alarm circuit breaker exhibits a power saving performance that is 3~8 times greater than that of other ELBs. Installation of approximately 10 earth leakage alarm circuit breakers in one apartment household, with an area of 120 ㎡, can save 2~5 kWh per month. Therefore, the developed earth leakage alarm breaker not only satisfies the characteristics of existing earth leakage breakers, but also exhibits outstanding power supply quality since it has the functions of electric fire prevention and malfunction prevention. Therefore, this device can innovatively contribute to electric fire prevention.

To examine 1) rainfall pattern (i.e., type and intensity) regulating surface erosion on hillslopes in postwildfire area and 2) its effect on variation in sediment yield along the gradient of severity wildfire regimes and elapsed years, we surveyed the amount of sediment yield with respect to daily or net-effective rainfall in 9 plots in eastern coastal region, Republic of Korea. Before field investigation, all plots classified into three groups: low-, mixed- and high-severity wildfire regimes (3 plots in each group). We found that, with decreasing wildfire regimes and increasing elapsed years, the rainfall type regulating surface erosion changed from daily rainfall to net-effective rainfall (considering rainfall continuity) and its intensity increased continuously. In general, wildfires can destroy the stabilized forest floors, and thus rainfall interception by vegetation and litter layer should be reduced. Wildfires can also decrease soil pores in forest floors, and thus infiltration rates of soil are reduced. These two processes lead to frequent occurrence of overland flows required to surface erosion, and sediment yields in post-wildfire areas should increase linearly with increasing rainfall events. With the decreasing severity wildfire regimes and the increasing elapsed years, these processes should be stabilized, and therefore their sediment yields also decreased. Our findings on variations in sediment yields caused by the wildfire regimes and the elapsed years suggest understanding of hydrogeomorphic and ecologic diversities in post-wildfire areas, and these should be carefully examined for both watershed management and disaster prevention.

$^{210}Pb$ dating was conducted to examine the influence of land use changes in the forest catchment on lake sedimentation. The Kushiro River, into which Lake Takkobu drains under regular flow conditions, contributed to an increased sedimentation rate in sampling point at the lake outflow because turbid water from the Kushiro River flows back into Lake Takkobu during floods. The elevated sediment flux from the catchment dilutes the $^{210}Pb$ concentration in sampling points at the inflow of the Takkobu River and the lake outflow, which causes fluctuations in the $^{210}Pb$ concentrations in sediment cores. The $^{210}Pb$ dating was estimated using the CRS (Constant rate of Supply) model. The dates by the CRS model in Lake Takkobu profiles were in good agreement with the dates by $^{137}Cs$. Sedimentation rates reconstructed for the past 100-150 years suggested that sedimentation rates increased drastically following land use changes. While a natural sedimentation rate of $0.01-0.03g/cm^2/year$ is observed until the 1880s, whereas lake sedimentation accelerated to $0.03-0.09g/cm^2/year$ following land use changes such as deforestation and channelization, between the 1880s and 1940s. In particular, the sedimentation rates have been associated with deforestation, channelization, agricultural development and road construction, since the 1980s, and these rates were about 9-28 times higher than those under natural conditions, leading to accelerated lake shallowing.
