A numerical model to analyze dam break flows has been developed based on approximate Riemann solver. The governing equations of the model are the nonlinear shallow-water equations. The governing equations are discretized explicitly by using finite volume method and the numerical flux are reconstructed with weighted averaged flux (WAF) method. The developed model is verified. The first verification problem is about idealized dam break flow on wet and dry beds. The second problem is about experimental data of dam break flow. From the results of the verifications, very good agreements have been observed
This study was focused on establishing the concepts of the instream flow to prevent the problems for the conceptual ambiguity and the difference in the instream flow estimation methods. The average drought flow is defined as the flow required to guarantee the minimum function of the river such as prevention of drying. The environmental control flow is defined as the flow required to control optimal river environment, the flow required for navigation, prevention of sea water-intrusion, protection of river management facilities, conservation of water Quality, fishing, prevention of river mouth closure, control of groundwater level, protection of animals and plants, and landscape. The average drought flow was obtained by flow duration analysis for the natural flows in the Han River at Indo-Bridge gaging station. When considering the 9 factors related to environment conservation, the conservation of water quality was proved to be most important. The pollutants for the river flows were estimated and the water qualities were forecasted. After comparing the water qualities in the future and water quality standards, there quired optimal dilution flow was estimated. The average drought flow and environmental control flow are all non-consumptive flows. Therefore larger flow between them, i.e., Max. (average drought flow, environmental control flow) can be the instream flow. The river management flow can be added to the flows for water utilization in the downstream. The results from this study are expected to be very helpful in the systematic river management on the other main rivers in Korea.
Recently, in the field of water resource engineering, interest in predicting time series water levels and flow rates using deep learning technology that has rapidly developed along with the Fourth Industrial Revolution is increasing. In addition, although water-level and flow-rate prediction have been performed using the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) model that can predict time-series data, the accuracy of flow-rate prediction in rivers with rapid temporal fluctuations was predicted to be very low compared to that of water-level prediction. In this study, the Paldang Bridge Station of the Han River, which has a large flow-rate fluctuation and little influence from tidal waves in the estuary, was selected. In addition, time-series data with large flow fluctuations were selected to collect water-level and flow-rate data for 2 years and 7 months, which are relatively short in data length, to be used as training and prediction data for the LSTM and GRU models. When learning time-series water levels with very high time fluctuation in two models, the predicted water-level results in both models secured appropriate accuracy compared to observation water levels, but when training rapidly temporal fluctuation flow rates directly in two models, the predicted flow rates deteriorated significantly. Therefore, in this study, in order to accurately predict the rapidly changing flow rate, the water-level data predicted by the two models could be used as input data for the rating curve to significantly improve the prediction accuracy of the flow rates. Finally, the results of this study are expected to be sufficiently used as the data of flood warning system in urban rivers where the observation length of hydrological data is not relatively long and the flow-rate changes rapidly.
Many kinds of generation systems have been developed to use ocean energy. Among these, with the use of an oscillating water column (OWC) for power generation is attracting attention. The OWC-type wave power generation system converts wave energy into electricity by operating a generator turbine with the oscillating water level in a column of water. There are two ways to convert wave power into electricity using an OWC. One uses a cross-flow turbine using the water level inside the OWC. The other method uses the flow of air in a Wells turbine, which depends on the water level. An experiment was carried out using a 2-D wave tank in order to minimize the number of empirical tests. The design factors were taken from Koo et al. (2012) and the experimental environment assumed by free surface motion. This paper deals with characteristics of two types of wave energy conversion systems combine with a breakwater. One model uses an air-driven Wells turbine and a cross-flow water turbine. The other type uses a cross-flow water turbine. Wave energy converters with OWCs have mostly been studied using air-driven Wells turbines. The efficiency of the cross-flow turbine was about 15% higher than that of the other model, and the water level of the OWC internal chamber for the cross-flow water turbine and air-driven Wells turbine was less than about 40% lower than the one using only the cross-flow water turbine.
Geumgang canal is planned to connect Geumgang lake with Saemangeum lake to accelerate desalinization and dilute polluted water to improve water quality in Saemangeum lake. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of water quality on Geumgang lake by diversion of its lake flow to Saemangeum lake. WASP5 model was used to estimate water quality of Geumgang lake. Model calibration and verification were done for water quality data for 2001 and 2002. Water quality concentrations in Geumgang lake were simulated for 4 scenarios, which were considered whether the Geumgang canal is built or not. As a result of simulations, there was little impact on water quality in Geumgang lake, though a little of the Geumgang lake flow diverted to Saemangeum lake. As the Geumgang canal is planned to divert the Geumgang water flow which were discharged into the sea through sluice gates when canal is not built, it is thought that there will be little change by diversion of water flow.
In this study, we discussed the application of Watershed model and Load Duration Curves (LDC) in Total Water Load Management System. The Flow Duration Curves (FDC) and the LDC were generated using the results of the daily HSPF model and analyzed on monthly or yearly flow duration variability, and non-point pollutant discharge loads by entire flow conditions. As a result of the calibration and verification of the HSPF model, both the flow and the water quality were appropriately simulated. The simulated values were used to generate the Flow Duration Curve and the Load Duration Curve, and then the excess rate by entire flow conditions was analyzed. The point and non-point pollutant discharge loads for entire flow conditions were calculated. It is possible to evaluate the variability of water quality in specific flow duration through the curves reflecting the flow duration variability and to confirm the characteristics of the pollutant source. For a more scientific Total Water Load Management System, it is necessary to switch from a current system to a system that can take into account the entire flow conditions. For this, the application of the watershed model and load duration curve is considered to be the best alternative.
Recently severe drought caused the water shortage around the western parts of Chungcheongnamdo province, South Korea. A Diversion tunnel from the Geum river to the Boryong dam, which is the water supply dam for these areas has been proposed to solve this problem. This study examined hydraulic impacts on the Geum river associated with the diversion plan assuming the severe drought condition of 2015 would persist for the simulation period of 2016. The hydraulic simulation model was verified using hydrologic and hydraulic data including hourly discharges of the Geum river and its 8 tributaries, fluctuation of tidal level at the mouth of the river, withdrawals and return flows and operation records of the Geum river barrage since Feb. 1, 2015 through May 31, 2015. For the upstream boundary condition of the Geum river predicted inflow series using the nonlinear regression equation for 2015 discharge data was used. In order to estimate the effects of uncertainty in inflow prediction to the results total four inflow series consisting of upper limit flow, expected flow, lower limit flow and instream flow were used to examine hydraulic impacts of the diversion plan. The simulation showed that in cases of upper limit and expected flows there would be no problem in taking water from the Geum river mouth with a minimum water surface level of EL(+) 1.44 m. Meanwhile, the simulation also showed that in cases of lower limit flow and instream flow there would be some problems not only in taking water for water supply from the mouth of the Geum river but also operating the diversion facility itself with minimum water surface levels of EL(+) 0.94, 0.72, 0.43, and 0.14 m for the lower limit flow without/with diversion and the instream flow without/with diversion, respectively.
It follows in quality and sewage exclusion method of the investigation objective sector and the Combined Sewer Overflows which is suitable in regional characteristics and the confluence area against the rainfall initially a flow and the medulla and measurement - it analyzes the initial rainfall outflow possibility control plan which is suitable in the domestic actual condition and it proposes the monitor ring plan for the long-term flow and pollution load data accumulation. From the research which it sees the Infiltration water/Influent water and CSOs investigation it passes by the phase of hazard chain and Namwon right time 4 it does not hold reverse under selecting, Measurement it used the hazard automatic flow joint seal Sigma 910 machine and in case 15 minute interval of the I/I, it measured a flow at case 5, 15 minute standing of the CSOs. The water quality investigation for the water leakage investigation of the I/I and the sewage from the point which is identical with flow measurement during on-the-spot inspection duration against 6 items which include the BOD sampling and an analysis, when the rainfall analysis for CSOs fundamental investigation analyzed against 18 items which include the BOD sampling. Consequently, for the optimum interpretation invasion water / inflow water of the this investigation area day average the lowest flow - water quality assessment veterinarian optimum interpretation hazard average per day - lowest flow - it averages a medulla evaluation law department one lowest flow evaluation technique and it selects, it presentation collectively from here it gets, position result with base flow analysis of invasion water / inflow water.
This paper deals with oxygen transfer by air entrainment and energy dissipations by flow characteristics at the stepped drop structure. Nappe flow occurred at low flow rates and for relatively large step height. Dominant flow features included an air pocket, a free-falling nappe impact and a subsequent hydraulic jump on the downstream step. Most energy was dissipated by nappe impact and in the downstream hydraulic jump. Skimming flow occurred at larger flow rates with formation of recirculating vortices between the main flow and the step comers. Oxygen transfer was found to be proportional to the flow velocity, the flow discharge, and the Froude number. It was more related to the flow discharge than to the Froude number. Energy dissipations in both cases of nappe flow and skimming flow were proportional to the step height and were inversely proportional to the overflow depth, and were not proportional to the step slope. The stepped drop structure was found to be efficient for water treatment associated with substantial air entrainment and for energy dissipation.

In this paper, we investigated the improvement of characteristics of knock, emission and fuel consumption rate by optimizing the location and size of water transfer holes in cylinder head gasket without change of engine water jacket design itself. The cooling system was modified in the direction of reducing the metal temperature in the head and increasing the metal temperature in the block. The optimization of water transfer holes in cylinder head gasket was obtained by "flow visualization test". The water transfer holes were concentrated in front side of the engine in order to reduce thermal boundary layer in the water jacket of No. 2 and No. 3 combustion changer in the cylinder head, which would have a large knock intensity, and increase thermal boundary layer in the water jacket of the cylinder block. When the modified coolant flow pattern was applied as proposed in this paper, the knock characteristic was improved. The spark timing was advanced up to 2$^{\circ}$ in low and middle speed range at a full load. In addition, HC emission at MBT was reduced by 5.2%, and the fuel consumption rate was decreased up to 1% in the driving condition of 2400 rpm and 250 KPa. However, since this coolant flow pattern mentioned in this paper might deteriorate the performance of vehicle cooling system due to the coolant flow rate reduction, a properly optimized point should be obtained. obtained.
