  • Effort of reducing wastes and their recycling is increasing in worldwide. Especially, extreme care for alkali recycling is required because of its environmental pollution and its corrosive characteristics. In order to manage alkali wastes effectively, it is necessary to make quality standards for recycling products from the alkali wastes because there are no quality specifications yet. In this study, we selected several recycling candidates from the alkali wastes based on the analysis of the most recent data of the various industrial sites. As a result, the recycling candidates from the alkali wastes are sodium hydroxide, aluminum sulfate, poly aluminum chloride. It is believed that the proper management system for waste products is required in governmental point of view and it propagates positively for resolving various environmental issues.

  • In this study, an amylase-producing fungus, strain 15 was isolated from soil in order to saccharify food wastes with cellulolytic and amylolytic enzymes. The amylase production cultures were performed in Mandel's medium with 1% rice straw and 1% paper wastes as carbon sources. The strain produced various cellulolytic (FPase 0.25, xylanase 20.09, CMCase 3.15 U/mL-supernatant) and amylolytic ($\alpha$-amylase 1.20, gluco-amylase 0.70, $\beta$-amylase 2.40 U/mL-supernatant) enzymes in Mandel's medium. In 10 L jar fermenter, maximum amylase and FPase activities, 3.25 and 0.23 U/mL, were obtained when the culture was grown at 30$^{\circ}C$, 200 rpm and 0.6 vvm for 3 days. In 100 mL flask level and 10 L jar fermenter, amylase produced by the strain 15 showed similar cellulolytic and amylolytic enzyme activities with Trichoderma inhamatum KSJ1 isolated from rotten woods by previous researcher. The ability of saccharification to food wastes also showed similar degree. However, the isolate 15 appeared to be yellowish in YMEA plate comparing to Trichoderma inhamatum KSJ1 in greenish.

  • There has been a steady increase in geoenvironmental engineering projects where geotechnical engineering has been combined with environmental concerns. Many of these projects involve some investigation on geoenvironmental characteristics related to waste landfill and waste soil. This study was carried out to evaluate the geoenvironmental properties of sorted soil from unregulated landfill wastes. The physical, mechanical, and environmental Properties of sorted soil were investigated for utilization in civil works.

  • When we looked at the seasonal food dregs of the eastern side of gangwondo, gangneung city's summer and winter food dregs showed 25.9 and 25.8% respectively due to the presence of beach areas and ski resorts. Sokcho city showed 28.12% in summer and yangyang gun's summer food dregs showed 40.2%. Yangyang gun's august food dregs showed 2.7 times larger than annual average amount. Outlook density showed regional characteristics. Data showed that food dregs' amount rate has been reduced gradually from 2005 because of the prohibition of direct filling up. As a result of compositions analysis, the eastern side of gangwondo's water fraction of living dregs were lower than that of chuncheon city where is located at the gangwondo's inland area. chuncheon city's data showed residential areas 53.5%, community areas 56.8% and commercial areas 55.6%. These discrepancies caused by the characteristics of dregs discharge type and climate. The caloric value of dregs has been increased incrementally after the ban of food dregs' direct filling up. Therefore, heating value of the dregs exceeds the existing furnace design spec and it can cause high caloric value problems, so we need additional research to solve these problems.

  • This study was conducted to provide the basic information to know reasonable method f3r the removal and treatment of municipal solid wastes(MSWs). MSWs four different sources(apartment residence, commerce, office/industry) in Daegu city were collected, and bulk density, physical composition, moisture, combustible, ash, elements and heating values were investigated. The values of bulk density were at range of 0.30∼0.41ton/m$^3$. The percentages of foods, papers, vinyls/plastics, textiles, rubbers/leathers, metals and glasses/ceramics of wet muncipal solid wastes from three sources except office/industry were at range of 27.3∼46.4%, 21.2∼38.4%, 10.3∼11.9%, 3.8∼5.2%, 0.5∼1.7%, 6.9∼8.7% and 1.9∼2.6% respectively. The percentages of papers, foods, vinyls/plastics, textiles, rubbers/leathers, metals and glasses/ceramics of dry muncipal solid wastes from three sources except office/industry were at range of 21.1∼40.4%, 14.2∼30.1%, 15.2∼17.8%, 4.0∼6.0%, 0.9∼2.8%, 12.2∼14.1% and 3.1∼3.7% respectively. The moisture contents of foods, woods, textiles and papers in wastes were at range of 65.7∼76.2%, 34.6∼50.0%, 22.2∼44.8 and 30.6∼44.4% respectively. • Microorganisms growing alcoholic distillery wastes were isolated from soil. Of them, the selected strain EL-9 had a capability of accumulating poly-$\beta$-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) when grown in alcoholic distillery wastes. The strain EL-9 was identified as a genus Actinobacillus based on the morphological, cultural, and biochemical characteristics. The strain EL-9 was named temporarily as Actino- bacillus sp. EL-9. The optimal temperature and pH for cell growth of Actinobacillus sp. EL-9 were 30$\circ$C and 7.0, respectively. The optimal medium compositions for cell growth comprised glucose 2%, NH$_{4}$NO$_{3}$ 0.15%, Na$_{2}$HP0$_{4}$-12H$_{2}$O 0.25%, KH$_{2}$PO$_{4}$ 0.25%, MgSO$_{4}$4-7H$_{2}$O 0.15%, FeSO$_{4}$-7H$_{2}$O 0.005%, CaCl$_{2}$-2H$_{2}$O 0.003% and trace element solution 5m/l. To investigate the optimal conditions for PHB production, two-stage culture technique was used. The result showed that the optimal conditions for PHB production are identical those for cell growth. When propionic acid was added as a cosubstrate, PHB/HV copolymer was produced.
