  • The Korean Peninsula is surrounded on three sides by the East Sea, West Sea and South Sea which are connected to many rivers and streams, thereby facilitating easy inflow of debris from land. Furthermore, excessive debris inflow to the sea because of active fishing and various recreational activities. Debris entering the sea are weighted over time and settle in the seabed, thus, making direct monitoring of debris impossible and its collection difficult. Uncollected submerged marine debris affects the seabed ecosystem and water quality and can cause ghost fishing and ship accidents, especially due to waste net ropes and waste fishing gears. Therefore, understanding the debris distribution characteristics is necessary to assist quick collection of these debris (waste net ropes and waste fishing gears). Thus, this study conducted a survey of debris deposited in the seas of 39 ports. Furthermore, distribution characteristics and compositions of submerged marine debris were identified by a map prepared through GIS-based spatial analysis of the East Sea. Consequently, 58% of waste tires in the East Sea were concentrated in breakwaters and ship berthing facilities. Moreover, 26 % of waste plastics were distributed outside the port. Identifying the distinct distribution characteristics of submerged marine debris was difficult; however, compared with others, the distribution of waste plastics was possible outside the port. The findings of this study can serve as baseline data to assist the collection of submerged marine debris using the distribution characteristics.

  • With the development of industrialization, the amount of food and waste is rapidly increasing. Accordingly, the government is aware of the seriousness and is making efforts in various ways to reduce it. As a part of that, the volume-based food system was introduced, and although there were several trials and errors at the beginning of the introduction, it shows a reduction effect of 20 to 30%. These results suggest that the volume-based food system is being established. However, the waste is caused by foreign substances in the process of recycling resources by collecting them from the 1st collection to the 2nd collection process. Therefore, in this study, to solve these problems fundamentally, artificial intelligence is applied to classify foreign substances and improve them. Due to the nature of food waste, there is a limit to obtaining many images, so we compare several models based on CNNs and classify them as abnormal data, that is, CNN-based models are trained on various types of foreign substances, and then models with high accuracy are selected. We intend to prepare improvement measures for maintenance, such as manpower input to protect equipment and classify foreign substances by applying it.

  • Background: At the end of the'Waste Drug Disposal Project', collection and disposal of waste drugs remain a social issue. Objective: This study aimed to provide suggestions to improve the drug waste management system in Korea by comparing domestic and overseas relevant programs. Methods: This is a comparative study between South Korea, Australia, Canada, France, and the US. These overseas countries were selected because they have been operating waste drug management programs continuously to date. Comparison was conducted by a pre-determined analysis frame including legal regulation, enforcement program and its performance. Results: All selected countries except Australia had legal regulations on drug wastes. The US had the largest variety of drug waste disposal methods. Canada had recommended that pharmacies actively participate in drug waste withdrawal programs. France had the largest variety of methods to promote relevant programs, including window sticker, SNS, and app, as well as the highest level of awareness and participation. Australia had the lowest level of awareness and participation in pharmaceutical waste management programs. Pharmaceutical companies took responsibility of paying for these programs in the selected overseas countries. Conclusion: Further efforts should be made to establish a clear guideline including the role of pharmaceutical companies, and to develop various methods for the public to be aware of appropriate ways of disposing drug wastes in Korea.

  • The settlement occurring during landfill construction often causes a damage of drainage system. Clogging can reduce the hydraulic conductivity of the Leachate Collection and Drainage System, which results in the increase of leachate level within the landfill. Consequently, the insulation ability of leachate will be decreased. The main purpose of this project is to estimate a newly designed reinforced drainage geotextile (RDG) combining non-woven fabrics with geogrid for minimizing the destruction of drainage layer as well as evaluating RDG's application in the leachate collection and drainage system. Thus, the project observed the permittivity changes of RDG, and evaluated the drainage ability using RDG in the leachate collection and drainage system.

  • Community residents are tend to evade waste treatment facilities such as waste landfills, waste incinerators. Therefore, decision-makers of waste management are concerned about the reduction and recycling of food garbage. As a treatment alternative of food garbage which consists of 30% of municipal waste, producing compost and feed stuff from food garbage is environmentally amenable. In considering the characteristics of food garbage are putrid and high moisturized, methods of landfilling and incineration for food garbage are environmentally inadequate. For the institutionalization of food garbage recycling, separate discharge, establishment of collection system, securing of market for compost and feed stuff manufactured from food garbage, and tax and financial incentives for food garbage recycling facilities are necessary.

  • Producer and distributor of electrical and electronic equipment may directly collect waste electrical and electronic equipment that falls under the class to which the equipment they distributed belongs, or may join KERC(Korea Electronic Recycling Cooperative) and have KERC fulfill the duty to collect on behalf. In this study, the system of calculating the financial contributions is reviewed, and then the defined problems and improvement plan are proposed. First, the standard operation and time should be set for collection and transportation costs, taking into account the operation by collection type. Second, since there is a difference in the screening method of the recycling center, the standard cost for the allocation factor should be set by reflecting the difference in these methods and the characteristics of the product line being processed. Third, it is necessary to secure a budget of sufficient size by determining the median or average value rather than the minimum value in the forecast model for visit collection. This study is suggesting in that it examines the problems of the allotted contributions paid by the mutual aid members to KERC and suggests ways to improve them.

  • After recycle of spent materials has been optimised, there remains a proportion of waste which must be dealt with in the most environmentally friendly manner available. For materials such as municipal waste, clinical waste, toxic waste and special wastes such as tyres, incineration is often the most appropriate technology. The study of incineration must take a process system approach covering the following aspects: ${\bullet}$ Collection and blending of waste, ${\bullet}$ The two stage combustion process, ${\bullet}$ Quenching, scrubbing and polishing of the flue gases, ${\bullet}$ Dispersion of the flue gases and disposal of any solid or liquid effluent. The design of furnaces for the burning of a bed of material is being hampered by lack of an accurate mathematical model of the process and some semi-empirical correlations have to be used at present. The prediction of the incinerator gas phase flow is in a more advanced stage of development using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis, although further validation data is still required. Unfortunately, it is not possible to scale down many aspects of waste incineration and tests on full scale incinerators are essencial. Thanks to a close relationship between SUWIC and Sheffield Heat&Power Ltd., an extended research programme has been carried out ar the Bernard Road Incinerator plant in Sheffield. This plant consists of two Municipal(35 MW) and two Clinical (5MW) Waste Incinerators which provide district heating for a large part of city. The heat is distributed as hot water to commercial, domestic ( >5000 dwelling) and industrial buildings through 30km of 14" pipes plus a smaller pipe distribution system. To improve the economics, a 6 MW generator is now being added to the system.

  • Currently, medical waste stoker incinerator is widely used in the emission control technology of health-care risk waste and miscellaneous contaminated waste. In the past, wet type control technology was used to remove the major harmful gaseous contaminants of medical waste such as HCl, $NO_x,\;SO_2$, CO, DUST, Dioxin. However, the treatment cost for wastewater was high and it has a disadvantage for frozen system during winter season. Therefore, in order to obtain effective treatment, the dry type control technology was developed and widely used to remove the gaseous contaminants. In this study, pre-coated bag filter using hydrated lime, ($Ca(OH)_2$), was applied to the dry type control system and the optimum dose of hydrated lime was investigated. The treatment results showed that the dust collection rate was approximately 26.7%. Moreover, the HCl removal rate using pre-coated bag filter ($50mg/sm^3\;Ca(OH)_2$) was 13.52%, which was significantly higher than 3.26% obtained from conventional bag filter.

  • This paper investigates the impact of an increase in unit price of solid waste collection on demand for alternative solid waste disposal types. I control for other variables affecting the demand and employ both community and time fixed effects models in the estimation of each reduced-form demand functions. Estimation results show that an increase in unit price reduces the demand for garbage bag collection services of non-food solid wastes while it increases the demand for food wastes and source-separated recyclables. These results imply that reduction in the demand for non-food solid wastes collection is mainly achieved by increasing the amount of recyclables and food wastes collected. However, it appears that an increase in unit price increases the total amount of solid wastes generated. This suggests that price incentive effects are offset by the decrease in source-reduction efforts because of feedback effects resulting from the increase in recycling, food waste separation, and illegal disposal of wastes.
