Background: Fluorouracil-based regimens have been widely accepted and recommended in the guidelines for treating patients with early or advanced staged colon cancer, although results are controversial. Here we performed a systemic analysis to evaluate the impact of S-1 based regimens on response and survival of patients with colon cancer. Methods: Clinical studies evaluating the impact of S-1 based regimens on response and survival of patients with colon cancer were identified using a predefined search strategy. Summary response rates (RRs) to treatment were calculated. Results: Six clinical studies which including 227 patients with advanced colorectal cancer were considered eligible for inclusion. Two studies were conducted using combination of S-1 and Oxaliplatin, and four studies featured S-1 and irinotecan. Systemic analysis showed that, in all patients, pooled RRs was 43.17%. Major adverse effects were hematological toxicities, gastrointestinal disturbance, neurosensory toxicity. No treatment related death occurred. Conclusion: This systemic analysis suggests that S-1 based regimens, both with oxaliplatin or irinotean are associated with acceptable response and toxicity in patients with colon cancer.

A variety of complications in endoscopic third ventriculostomy have been reported, including neurovascular injury, hemodynamic alterations, endocrinologic abnormalities, electrolyte imbalances, cerebrospinal fluid leakage, fever and infection. Even though most complications are transient, the overall rate of permanent morbidity is 2.38% and the overall mortality rate is 0.28%. To avoid these serious complications, we should keep in mind potential complications and how to prevent them. Proper decisions with regard to surgical indication, choice of endoscopic entry and trajectory, careful endoscopic procedures with anatomic orientation, bleeding control and tight closure are emphasized for the prevention of complications.
Background: The MK1 strain, a novel bacterial isolate from soft-rotten tissue of the Neungee mushroom, produces copious amounts of exopolysaccharide (EPS) in a dextrose minimal medium. This study examined the molecular characteristics and immunomodulatory activity of MK1 EPS. Methods: The EPS in the culture supernatant was purified by cold ethanol precipitation, and characterized by SDS- PAGE/silver staining and Bio-HPLC. The immunomodulatory activities of the EPS were examined using the mouse monocytic cell line, RAW 264.7 cells. Results: The molecular weights of the purified EPS were rather heterogeneous, ranging from 10.6 to 55 kDa. The EPS was composed of glucose, rhamnose, mannose, galactose, and glucosamine at an approximate molar ratio of 1.00 : 0.8 : 0.71 : 0.29 : 0.21. EPS activated the RAW cells to produce cytokines, such as TNF-${\alpha}$ and IL-$1{\beta}$, and nitric oxide (NO). EPS also induced the expression of co-stimulatory molecules, such as B7-1, B7-2 and ICAM-1, and increased the phagocytic activity. The macrophage-activating activity of EPS was not due to endotoxin contamination because the treatment of EPS with polymyin B did not reduce the macrophage-activating activity. Conclusion: The EPS produced from the MK1 strain exerts macrophage-activating activity.

New banana-shaped achiral compounds, 1,3-phenylene bis [4-{4-(7-octenyloxy)phenyliminomethyl}benzoate](PBOEB), 1,3-phenylene bis [4-{3-fluoro-4-(7-octenyloxy)phenyliminomethyl}benzoate] (PBFOEB), 1,3-phenylene bis [4-{4-(10-undecyloxy)phenyliminomethyl}benzoate](PBEUB), and 1,3phenylene bis [4-{3-fluoro-4-(10-undecyloxy)phenyliminomethyl}benzoate](PBFEUB) were obtained by general synthetic methods. PBOEB and PBFOEB having the octenyloxy groups such as $-(CH_2)_6CH=CH_2$ showed ferroelectric switching, and their values of spontaneous polarization on reversal of an applied electric field were 120 nC/$cm^2$ and 225 nC/$cm^2$, respectively. PBEUB and PBFEUB having the undecyloxy groups such as $-{CH_2)_9CH=CH_2$ showed antiferroelectric switching, and their values of spontaneous polarization on reversal of an applied electric field were 120 nC/$cm^2$ and 140 nC/$cm^2$, respectively. We could obtain ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phases by controlling the number of carbon atom in alkenyloxy chains of bent-core molecules.
Copper is considered to be the most promising substrate, especially Cu(111), for the growth of high quality monolayer graphene. Since interactions between graphene and Cu substrates will influence on the orientation, quality, and electrical properties of synthesized graphene, we experimentally determine a weak interfacial interaction between Cu(111) substrate and graphene using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The measurement was conducted from the initial stage to the formation of a graphene monolayer. Graphene growth was initiated along the Cu(111) lattice, and two rotated graphene domains were grown, where no significant differences were observed in the band structure depending on different orientations. The interaction, including electron transfer from the Cu(111) to graphene, was limited between the Shockley state of the Cu(111) surface and the ${\pi}$ bands of graphene. These results provide direct information on the growth behavior and interactions between the Cu(111) and graphene.
A study on the electrosorption of U(VI) onto porous activated carbon fibers (ACFs) was performed to treat uranium-containing lagoon sludge. Effective U(Ⅵ) removal is accomplished when a negative potential is applied to the activated carbon fiber(ACF) electrode. For a feed concentration of 100mg/L, the concentration of U(VI) in the cell effluent is reduced to less than 1mg/L. The adsorbed uranium could be deserted from the ACF by passing a 1M NaCl solution through the cell and applying a positive potential onto the electrode. The regeneration of ACF from the cycling experiments was confirmed.

Modern applications such as augmented reality, connected vehicles, video streaming and gaming have stringent requirements on latency, bandwidth and computation resources. The explosion in data generation by mobile devices has further exacerbated the situation. Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) is a recent addition to the edge computing paradigm that amalgamates the cloud computing capabilities with cellular communications. The concept of MEC is to relocate the cloud capabilities to the edge of the network for yielding ultra-low latency, high computation, high bandwidth, low burden on the core network, enhanced quality of experience (QoE), and efficient resource utilization. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview on different traits of MEC including its use cases, architecture, computation offloading, security, economic aspects, research challenges, and potential future directions.
The present study was designed to study the difference effects between nicardipine and its two enantiomers on thoracic artery of rabbit. A high-performance liquid chromatographic method was used to prepare the two enantiomers of nicardipine. The thoracic artery of rabbit was removed. The vessels were cut into 3 mm in width and 15 mm in length spiral strips and immersed into tissue baths. The concentration-response curves of nicardipine and its enantiomers were obtained by cumulative administration of the vasoconstrictors. Nicardipine and the enantiomers could shift the dose-response curves of NE, KCI or CaCl$_2$ to right in a nonparallel manner and decrease the maximum effective in a concentration-depended manner, respectively. The pD$_2$' value of R-(-)-nicardipine showed significantly effective than that of nicardipine and S-(+)-nicardipine (P<0.01). There was not obviouse difference between the pD$_2$' value of nicardipine and S-(+)-nicardipine (P>0.05). The results demonstrate that the stereoselective interaction between R-(-)-nicardipine and L-calcium channel receptor is more stronger than that of S-(+)-nicardipine.
Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng) and American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) are the two most recognized ginseng botanicals. It is believed that the ginseng saponins called ginsenosides are the major active constituents in both ginsengs. Although American ginseng is not as extensively studied as Asian ginseng, it is one of the best selling herbs in the US, and has garnered increasing attention from scientists in recent years. In this article, after a brief introduction of the distribution and cultivation of American ginseng, we discuss chemical analysis of saponins from these two ginsengs, i.e., their similarities and differences. Subsequently, we review pharmacological effects of the saponins, including the effects on the cardiovascular system, immune system, and central nervous system as well as the anti-diabetes and anti-cancer effects. These investigations were mainly derived from American ginseng studies. We also discuss evidence suggesting that chemical modifications of ginseng saponins would be a valuable approach to develop novel compounds in drug discovery.
Ginseng root has been used as a tonic remedy in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries. Modern studies have demonstrated that ginseng root has complex components and multiple pharmacological properties. The effects of ginseng leaf, however, are not well known. Recent studies show that compared to ginseng root, ginseng leaf and stem exhibit a higher content of active compositions such as ginsenosides, polysaccharides, triterpene flavonoids, volatile oil, polyacetylenic alcohols, peptides, amino acids and fatty acids. Ginseng leaf possesses multiple pharmacological effects in the central nervous, cardiovascular, growth and metabolism systems. Additionally, the leaf has anti-fatigue, anti-hyperglycemic, anti-oxidant, and anti-aged effects. In general, ginseng leaf is quite safe, but adverse effects may occur if it is abused or is of poor quality. Thus, attention must be paid to dosages, quality, and standardization of ginseng leaf products.
