  • Multicultural education is what educates the comprehension about social structure, social criticism, and an ideology of participatory democracy. A discussion about equality education based on the ethic of equal caring so that individual life is in harmony with communal life has very important meaning to actualize the equality of multicultural community. Therefore, this study explored 'caring in education' as care community which takes care of self and the inner circle as well as provides care of others. I analyze Walzer's concept of Complex Equality that criticizes the social alchemy in which man possesses various social goods through the possession of one good, namely the dominant good. Next, I discuss Noddings's caring in education which examined, focusing on the possibility that caring in education can be the new curriculum that every student is able to pursue excellence.

  • Recently 'Fair Society' has been a hot issue, which this study analyzes with the perspective of Michael Walzer's 'art of separation.' On the basis of this analysis, the reality of today's Korean society is diagnosed and prescribed. First, the essay theoretically delineates what 'Fair Society' would be according to 'the art of separation,' showing the working principles within and among the separated public and private spheres. Under the light of this 'Fair Society,' it argues, our society is not going through 'retrogression into totalitarianism.' Instead Korean society is, it diagnoses, disfigured by inappropriate private infiltration into public realms. The last chapter discusses the necessity of prosecutory measures as the first step toward 'Fair Society.'

  • This paper is to explore critically environmentalism, especially in terms of environmental justice, suggested or implied in theory of liberalism which has been the ideological foundation of contemporary society. It begins with a brief look at liberal perspective in a broad sense, then interprets in-depth the classical liberalism of J. Locke, libertarianism (esp. R. Nozick) and utilitarianism (including cost-benefit analysis) from the environmental point of view. And finally it considers liberal pluralism and other alternative theories of pluralism, especially communitarianism (esp M. Walzer), postmodern pluralism (esp. I. Young), and cultural pluralism (esp. C. Taylor) in order to overcome limitations of liberal environmentalism and to find out some clues for theory of environmental justice. In conclusion, this paper argues that we need to transfer from liberalism (including liberal pluralism) to critical pluralism in oder to develop a proper understanding of environmental problems and to conceptualize a desirable theory of environmental justice.
