Nonlinear Dynamic Response Characteristics with Variations in the Lower Stories of Mixed Building Structures (복합구조물의 하부층수 변화에 따른 비선형 동적응답특성)

  • The Mixed building structures can be divided into three partition, namely, upper wall, lower frame, and transfer system which link two partitions. The purpose of this study is to investigate the nonlinear response characteristics of structures, as the stories of lower frame of mixed building structures changes. The recorded earthquake ground motions of EI Centro 1940 NS is adopted, and the maximum ground accelerations are adjusted to 55ga1, 110ga1, 220ga1, 330ga1. The conclusions of this study are the following. 1) The responses of model that the story of lower frame is one were different from those of other models. 2) The process of ductility hinge occurrence of member was ends of coupling beam of upper wall and ends of beam of lower frame in 55ga1, bases of shear wall on pit floor in 110ga1, and bases of column of 1F in 220ga1.

  • The purpose of this study is to measure the environmental effects of different alternative building materials. The following building materials were tested: clay bricks, cement wall, and red-clay plaster. Four mock-up models were constructed using clay bricks, cement wall, red-clay plaster and the last model as the control model. The effects of the above four building materials on temperature, humidity, the emissions of formaldehyde, and V.O.C were measured. This experiment was conducted during September. The conclusions are as follows. Clay bricks were able to control temperature, humidity and filter formaldehyde by itself. The environment within the cement wall was not affected by the humidity changes outside. Red-clay plaster walls had little impact on the environment because it is very thin.!

  • Lymphangioma(or cystic hygroma) of the chest wall is rare case. We experienced one such case in a 16-year-old girl who complained of a large recurrent mass on her right upper post erolateral chest wall which had developed several years ago. The diagnosis was made following a physical examination, chest magnetic resonance imaging(MRI), and radio isotope (RI) lymphangiogrphy and was confirmed by a histopathological examination. We performed total excision of the lesion followed by a repeated sclerosing therapy with intralesional injection of Vibramycin.

Heterotopic Ossification in the Abdominal Wall after Exploratory Laparotomy

  • Heterotopic bone formation in abdominal incisions is a recognized but uncommon sequela of abdominal surgery. On the other hand, the formation of ectopic bone is a well-recognized complication following arthroplasty of the hip. Heterotopic ossification of midline abdominal incision scars is a subtype of myositis ossificans traumatica. Ectopic bone formation of midline abdominal incisions may cause regional pain or discomfort in the patient after surgery. If symptomatic, treatment is complete excision with primary closure. Radiologically, it is important to distinguish this benign entity from postoperative complications. We report a 69-year-old male who underwent exploratory laparotomy for traumatic small bowel perforation. A segment of abnormal hard tissue was found in the abdominal wall. Heterotopic ossification may occur at various sites and is a recognized but infrequent sequela of exploratory laparotomy. This case highlights clinical and etiological features of this finding.

Laparoscopic Rectovaginal Septal Repair without Mesh for Anterior Rectocele

  • A rectocele with a weakened rectovaginal septum can be repaired with various surgical techniques. We performed laparoscopic posterior vaginal wall repair and rectovaginal septal reinforcement without mesh using a modified transperineal approach. A 63-year-old woman with outlet dysfunction constipation complained of lower pelvic pressure and sense of heaviness for 30 years. Initial defecography showed an anterior rectocele with a 45-mm anterior bulge and perineal descent. Laparoscopic procedures included peritoneal and rectovaginal septal dissection directed toward the perineal body, rectovaginal septal suturing, and peritoneal closure. The patient started a soft diet the following day and was discharged on the 5th postoperative day without any complications. The patient had no dyschezia or dyspareunia, and no problem with bowel function; 3-month follow-up defecography showed a decrease in bulging to 18 mm. Laparoscopic posterior vaginal wall and rectovaginal septal repair is safe and feasible for treatment of a rectocele, and enables early recovery.

An Analysis of Flexural Performance of Concrete Filled Soldier Pile Applied to Temporary Retaining Wall (흙막이 벽체에 적용하는 콘크리트 충전형 엄지말뚝의 휨성능 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate bending performance of concrete filled soldier pile for temporary retaining wall. Structural performance tests were conducted on total number of four specimens. Each specimen had a unique characteristics with combination of the following variables, existence of reinforcing bar and locations of reinforcing steel plates. The results of this study were as follows; concrete filled steel tubes with being reinforced bar and flange rather than non-bar showed better performance. Higher yield, tensile strength and sufficient plastic strain were archived and maximum moment observed in experiments exceeded theoretical maximum moment in both allowable stress design and limit state design at all specimens.

  • Due to the rapid process of industrialization the cities of Korea confront changes of climate, destructions of the habitate and decrease of the green. Recently Seoul and other local governments have implemented policies and projects to improve the environmental surroundings. In reality, however, those policies and projects face difficulties in the course of implementation. The fact that there are no concrete regulations and specific legal procedures turns out to be one of the main difficulties. The aim of this study is to present specific plans and methods of wall-planting and to provide basic guidelines for the future direction of wall-planting and offer ideas of facilitating wall-planting. This study is based on questionnaires from specialists of landscape architecture through individual interviews and/or e-mails. The questionnaire is consisted of following 4 sections. 1. Show the experts current regulations and/or legal procedures and ask them improvements and suggestions. 2. Ask them choose matters of the highest priority by using Ricardo's diagram method. 3. Ask them to make a graded list in terms of the location and method of wall-planting. 4. Study the maketability of the wall-planting products currently in circulation. The city of Seoul and the Ministry of Environment recommend that trellis and/or planting inducement structures be installed on the building wall by regulation. The specialists responded to the questionnaire advocate that green wall without trellis should be allowed as green zone. Therefore regulations concerning the wall-planting should be determined specifically according to the characteristics of individual plants and walls. It has been urged that legal aid and social support must be reinforced to establish rules dealing with wall-planting. The respondents also point out that significant cutting down of the tax is far more effective in accelerating the wall-green instead of administrative support. The highest priority in terms of planting has been given to sound-proof wall, retaining wall and building wall. Concerning the maketability of the wall-planting products, panel products are recommended for early-planting and building planting. It has been suggested that the research and study of new materials and species be done in advance.

Toward residential building energy conservation through the Trombe wall and ammonia ground source heat pump retrofit options, applying eQuest model

  • The aim of this research is to apply the eQuest model to investigate the energy conservation in a multifamily building located in Dayton, Ohio by using a Trombe wall and an ammonia ground source heat pump (R-717 GSHP). Integration of the Trombe wall into the building is the first retrofitting measure in this study. Trombe wall as a passive solar system, has a simple structure which may reduce the heating demand of buildings significantly. Utilization of ground source heat pump is an effective approach where conventional air source heat pump doesn't have an efficient performance, especially in cold climates. Furthermore, the type of refrigerant in the heat pumps has a substantial effect on energy efficiency. Natural refrigerant, ammonia (R-717), which has a high performance and no negative impacts on the environment, could be the best choice for using in heat pumps. After implementing the eQUEST model in the said multifamily building, the total annual energy consumption with a conventional R-717 air-source-heat-pump (ASHP) system was estimated as the baseline model. The baseline model results were compared to those of the following scenarios: using R-717 GSHP, R410a GSHP and integration of the Trombe wall into the building. The Results specified that, compared to the baseline model, applying the R-717 GSHP and Trombe wall, led to 20% and 9% of energy conservation in the building, respectively. In addition, it was noticed that by using R-410a instead of R-717 in the GSHP, the energy demand increased by 14%.

  • Recent developments in multi-storey buildings for residential purpose have led to the extensive use of shear walls for the basic structural system. When the coupled shear wall system is used, joined together with cast-in-place concrete or mortar (or grout), the function of the continuous joints is a crucial factor in determining the safety of L.P. Precast concrete shear wall structures, because the function of the continuous joints(Vertical wall to wall joints) is to transfer froces from one element(shear wall panel) to another, and if sufficient strength and ductility is not developed in the continuous joints, the available strength in the adjoining elements may not be fully utilized. In this paper, the influence of the stiffness of vertical joints(wet vertical keyed shear joints) on the behaviour of precast shear walls is theoretically investigated. To define how the stiffness of the vertical joints affect the load carrying capacity of L.P.Precast concrete shear wall structure, the L.P.Precast concrete shear wall structure is analyzed, with the stiffness of the vertical joints varying from $K=0.07kg/mm^3$(50MN/m/m) to $K=1.43kg/mm^3$(1000MN/m/m), by using the continuous connection method. The results of the analysis shows that at the low values of the vertical stiffness, i.e. from $K=0.07kg/mm^3$(50MN/m/m) to $K=0.57kg/mm^3$(400MN/m/m), the resisting bending moment and shearing force of precast shear walls, the resisting shearing force of vertical joints and connecting beams are significantly affected. Quantitative Assessment of Orbital Volume and Intraocular Pressure after Two-Wall Decompression in Thyroid Ophthalmopathy

  • Background: Surgical outcomes after orbital wall decompression have focused on the degree of exophthalmos and intraocular pressure. The aim of this research was to evaluate intraorbital volume using computed tomography (CT) images following two-wall decompression using a combined subcilliary and endoscopic approaches. Methods: A retrospective review was performed for all patients who had undergone the two-wall decompression method. The pre/postoperative CT images were used to evaluate changes in intraocular volume. Intraocular pressure was evaluated using applanation tonometry. Surgical details are discussed within the body of text. Results: Two-wall decompression thru the medial wall and floor was associated with an average intraorbital volume change of $7.3cm^3$, with maximal accommodation up to $13cm^3$. Changes in intraocular pressures were not statistically significant. Conclusion: Two-wall decompression was effective in accommodation of up to $13cm^3$ of soft tissue herniation. There was no statistically significant association between changes in volume to pressure.
