In solid-liquid two phase flow, the knowledge of how descending solid particles affected by the presence of downstream wall is important. This work studies at what interstitial distance the velocity of a vertically descending sphere is affected by a downstream wall as a consequence of wall-modified hydrodynamic forces through a validated dynamic model. This interstitial distance-the hydrodynamic coupling distance ${\delta}_c-is$ found to decay monotonically with the approach Stokes number St which compares the particle inertia to viscous drag characterized by the quasi-steady Stokes' drag. The scaling relation ${\delta}_c-St-1$ decays monotonically as literature below the value of St equal to 10. However, the faster diminishing rate is found above the threshold value from St=10-40. Furthermore, an empirical relation of ${\delta}_c-St$ shows dependence on the drop height which clearly indicates the non-negligible effect of unsteady hydrodynamic force components, namely the added mass force and the history force. Finally, we attempt a fitting relation which embedded the particle acceleration effect in the dependence of fitting constants on the diameter-scaled drop height.
A 2D-LDV system was employed to investigate the flow field characteristics in fully developed drag reducing turbulent channel flows. The additive used in this study was Habon-G which showed splendid drag reduction effect and minimum mechanical degradation trend in the closed flow circulation loop. In order to have better understanding of the drag reduction mechanism, the instantaneous velocities were carefully measured under various experimental conditions and the flow characteristics including time-averaged velocity, turbulent intensity and Reynolds shear stresses were carefully assessed. The time-averaged velocity profiles of surfactant flows showed more parabolic shape(typically shown in a laminar flow) together with significant suppression of turbulent production, yielding the shear induced micelle structure orienting in the flow direction due to its isotropic characteristics. Especially it was observed that the maximum intensity for drag reducing flows was shifted away from the wall and that the streamwise and normal turbulent intensities were strongly altered. This phenomenon strongly suggests that the viscous sublayer becomes thicker with addition of surfactant. Turbulent momentum transport was drastically suppressed across the whole drag reducing channel flow.
It is well known that drag reduction in single phase liquid flow is affected by polymer material, molecular weight, polymer concentration, pipe diameter, and flow velocity. Drag reduction in two phase flow can be applied to the transport of crude oil, phase change system such as chemical reactor, pool and boiling flow, and to present cavitation which occurs in pump impellers. But the research of drag reduction in two phase flow is not sufficient. The purpose of the present work is to evaluate the drag reduction by measuring pressure drop, void fraction, mean liquid velocity, and turbulent intensity whether polymer is added in the horizontal two phase system or not. Experiment has been conducted in a test section with the inner diameter of 24mm and the length of 1,500mm. The polymer materials used are two kinds of polyacrylamide[PAAM] and co-polymer[A611P]. The polymer concentration was varied with 50, 100 and 200 ppm under the same experimental conditions. Experimental results showed that the drag reduction of co-polymer is higher than that of polyacrylamide. Mean liquid velocities increased as polymer was added, and turbulent intensity decreased inversely near the pipe wall.
In this paper, we present a detailed mechanism of drag reduction by dimples and roughness on a sphere by measuring the streamwise velocity above the dimpled and roughened surfaces, respectively. Dimples cause local flow separation and trigger the shear layer instability along the separating shear layer, resulting in generation of large turbulence intensity. With this increased turbulence, the flow reattaches to the sphere surface with high momentum near the wall and overcomes strong adverse pressure gradient formed in the rear sphere surface. As a result, dimples delay main separation and reduce drag significantly. The present study suggests that generation of a separation bubble, i.e. a closed-loop streamline consisting of separation and reattachment, on a body surface is an important flow-control strategy for drag reduction on a bluff body such as the sphere and cylinder. In the case of roughened sphere, the boundary layer flow is directly triggered by roughness and changes to a turbulent flow. Due to this change, the drag significantly decreases. As the Reynolds number further increases, transition to turbulence occurs earlier on the sphere surface. Because of faster growth of turbulent boundary layer by roughness, earlier transition thickens the boundary layer, resulting in earlier separation and drag increase with increasing Reynolds number
In the present study, the flat plate model test method is developed to evaluate the skin friction of the marine coating in the cavitation tunnel. Six-component force balance is used to measure the profile drag of the flat plate and strut. LDV(laser Doppler velocimetry) technique is also employed to evaluate the drag and to figure out the reason of the drag reduction. The flow velocities above the surface can be used to assess the skin friction, combined with direct force measurement. Since the vortical structure in the coherent turbulence structure influences on the skin friction in the high Reynolds number regime, the interaction between the turbulence structure and the surface wall is paying more attention. This sort of thing is important in the passive control of the turbulent boundary layer because the skin friction can't be determined only by wall condition. As complicated flow phenomena exist around a paint film, systematic measurement and analysis are necessary to evaluate the skin friction appropriately.
An experimental study has been carried out as a basic research for the development of the friction drag reduction technology for water-borne vehicles by injecting microbubbles or polymer solution. Experimental apparatus and procedures have been devised and prepared to measure the changes of the wall friction with the injection of additives and the basic experimental data on friction drag reduction are obtained for fully developed channel flows. The effects of key controlling parameters were investigated for higher drag reduction with varying the concentration and the injection rate of additives. The frictional drag has been reduced up to $25\%$ with the microbubble injection and $50\%$ with the polymer solution injection.
In order to examine the possibility of using a cavity as a passive device for reduction of skin friction and heat transfer, an intensive parametric study over a broad range of the cavity depth and length at different Reynolds numbers is performed for both laminar and turbulent boundary layers in the present study. Direct and large eddy simulation techniques are used for turbulent boundary layers at low and moderate Reynolds numbers, respectively. for both laminar and turbulent boundary layers over a cavity, a flow oscillation occurs due to the shear layer instability when the cavity depth and length are sufficiently large and it plays an important role in the determination of drag and heat-transfer increase or decrease. For a cavity sufficiently small to suppress the flow oscillation, both the total drag and heat transfer are reduced. Therefore, the applicability of a cavity as a passive device for reduction of drag and heat transfer is fully confirmed in the present study. Scaling based on the wall shear rate of the incoming boundary layer is also proposed and it is found to be valid in steady flow over a cavity.
The motion of a small rigid particle in the shear flow near a stationary flat wall is investigated in the context of Stokes flow. The lift force proposed by Saffman and later modified by Mclaughlin and Mei is considered in the prediction of the particle motion far away from the wall. Later, the expression of the lift force is modified to take into account the effect of wall. In the analysis, gravity, lift and drag acting on a small rigid particle near the wall are taken into account. Both analytical and numerical results for the terminal velocities, distances from the wall and trajectories of the particle are presented. In addition, we extended the present analysis to turbulent near-wall flow in the vicinity of the wall.
The wind pressure distributions were analyzed to provide fundamental criteria for the structural design on e single-span arched house according to the wind directions through the wind tunnel experiment. In order to investigate the wind force distributions, the variation of the wind force coefficients, the mean wind force coefficients, the drag force coefficients and the lift force coefficients were estimated by using the experimental data. The results obtained are as follows: 1. When the wind direction was normal to the wall, the maximum positive wind pressure along the height of the wall occurred approximately at two-thirds of the wall height because of the effects of boundary layer flow. 2. When the wind direction was 30$^{\circ}$ to the wall, the maximum positive wind force occurred at the windward edge of the wall. When the wind direction was parallel to the wall, the maximum negative wind force occurred at the windward edge of the wall. 3. The maximum negative wind force along the width of the roof appeared around the width ratio, 0.4, and that along the length of the roof appeared around the length ratio, 0.5. 4. According to the results of the mean wind force coefficients analysis, the maximum negative wind force occurred on the roof at the wind direction of 30$^{\circ}$. 5. The wind forces at the wind direction of 30$^{\circ}$ instead of 0$^{\circ}$ are recommended in the structural design of supports for a house. 6. To prevent partial damage of a house structure by wind forces, the local wind forces should be considered to the structural design of a house.
