A self-contained wall climbing robot, called MRWALLSPECT (Multi-functional Robot for WALL inSPECTion) II, is developed. It is designed for scanning external surfaces of gas or oil tanks with small curvature in order to find defects. The robot contains all the components for navigation in itself without any external tether cable. Although it takes the basic structure of the sliding body mechanism, the robot has its original characteristic features in the kinematic design with closed link mechanism, which is enabled by adopting a simple and robust gait pattern mimicking a biological system. By employing the proposed link mechanism, the number of actuators is reduced and high force-to-weight ratio is achieved. This paper describes its mechanism design and the overall features including hardware and software components. Also, the preliminary results of experiments are given for evaluating its performances.
A suboptimal control law in turbulent pipe flow is derived and tested. Two sensing variables ${\partial}p/{\partial}{\theta}\;|_w\;and\;{\partial}{\upsilon}_{\theta}/{\partial}r\;|_w$ are applied with two actuations ${\phi}_{\theta}$ and ${\phi}_r$. To test the suboptimal control law, direct numerical simulations of turbulent pipe flow at $Re_r=150$ are performed. When the control law is applied, a $13{\sim}23%$ drag reduction is achieved. The most effective drag reduction is made at the pair of ${\partial}{\upsilon}_{\theta}/{\partial}r\;|_w$ and ${\theta}_r$. An impenetrable virtual wall concept is useful for analyzing the near-wall suction and blowing. The virtual wall concept is useful for analyzing the near-wall behavior of the controlled flow. Comparison of the present suboptimal control with that of turbulent channel flow reveals that the curvature effect is insignificant.

An experimental study has been performed to investigate the characteristics of forced convective heat transfer in a rectangular duct with a 180.deg. bend. The Nusselt number of outer wall has maximum value near 105.deg. at which secondary flow is most active and the Nusselt number of inner wall has maximum value near the inlet of a duct. Near the outlet of a duct, the Nusselt number of outer wall decreases, the Nusselt number of inner wall increases and so those access each other through the influence of a straight duct attached to the end of a duct with a 180.deg. bend. Results of this experimental study would be the fundamental data when streamline curvature correction models are developed in the numerical study for forced convective heat transfer in a curved duct.
A steel slit shear wall has vertical slits and when it is under lateral loads, the section between these slits has double-curvature deformation, and by forming a flexural plastic hinge at the end of the slit, it dissipates the energy on the structure. In this article, Experimental, numerical and analytical analyses are performed to study the effect of slit shape and edge stiffener on the behavior of steel slit shear wall. Seismic behavior of three models with different slit shapes and two models with different edge stiffener shapes are studied and compared. Hysteresis curves, energy dissipation, out of plane buckling, initial stiffness and strength are discussed and studied. The proposed slit shape reduces the initial stiffness, increases the strength and energy dissipation. Also, edge stiffener shape increases the initial stiffness significantly.

The flow characteristics of two-dimensional turbulent offset jet which is discharged parallel to a solid wall has been studied experimentally and numerically. In the experiment, 3-hole pitot tube and 2 channel constant temperature hot-wire anemometer are used to measure local mean velocity, turbulence intensity and Reynolds stress while scannivalve is used to measure the wall pressure distribution. It is confirmed experimentally that local mean velocity is closely related to wall pressure distribution. It is also verified that for large Reynolds numbers and fixed step height there exists a similarity in the distribution of wall pressure coefficient. The maximum values of turbulence intensity occur in the top and bottom mixing layers and the magnitude of Reynolds stress becomes large in the lower mixing layer than in the top mixing layer due to the effect of streamline curvature and entrainment. In the numerical analysis, standard k-.epsilon. model based on eddy viscosity model and Leschziner and Rodi model based on algebraic stress model are adopted. The numerical analyses predict shorter reattachment lengths than the experiment, and this difference is judged to be due mainly to the problem of turbulence model constants and numerical algorithm. This also causes the inconsistency between the two results for other turbulence quantities in the recirculation region and impingement region, which constitutes a subject of a continued future study.

Investigations into cavity flows have been conducted for decades now, most of them being about zero-pressure-gradient flows entering a cavity on a straight wall. However, the flow over curved walls in real-life situations has not been fully investigated. As cavity flows on curved walls exert centrifugal force, these walls are likely to possess different features from straight walls. To verify this possibility, this study investigated cavity flows on curved walls. Using numerical method, the effect of two variables, namely, radius of curvature on a curved wall and inlet Mach number, were investigated for subsonic and supersonic cavity flows. The result demonstrates that the value of the peak pressure generated inside the cavity increases with the decrease in the radius of curvature on a curved wall or an increase in the inlet Mach number. The total pressure loss in the cavity also results in an increase in the cavity drag.

Purpose: Orbital bone is one of the most complex bones in the human body. When the patient has a fracture of the orbital bone, it is difficult for the surgeon to restore the fractured orbital bone to normal anatomic curvature because the orbital bone has complex curvature. We developed a rapid prototyping model based on a mirror image of the patient's 3D-CT (3 dimensional computed tomography) for accurate reduction of the fractured orbital wall. Methods: A total of 7 cases of large orbital wall fracture recieved absorbable plate prefabrication using rapid prototyping model during surgery and had the manufactured plate inserted in the fracture site. Results: There was no significant postoperative complication. One patient had persistent diplopia, but it was resolved completely after 5 weeks. Enophthalmos was improved in all patients. Conclusion: With long term follow-up, this new method of orbital wall reduction proved to be accurate, efficient and cost-effective, and we recommend this method for difficult large orbital wall fracture operations.

The characteristics of two-dimensional supersonic coanda flow was experimentally investigated. For various ratios of slot height to coanda wall's radius of curvature, surface roughnesses, and jet stagnation pressures, the characteristics of the supersonic coanda flow such as shock structures and hysteresis were observed by flow visualization. It was found that the characteristics of hysteresis of the coanda jet was related to the surface roughness of the coanda wall. The study was further extended for application of the tangentially injected coanda jet to control co-flowing highly compressible main jet direction. It was noticed that the stagnation pressure of the main jet as well as the ratio of the slot height to coanda wall's radius of curvature wall was an influencing factor in the performance of the fluidic thrust vectoring method.
Experiments are performed to investigate the single-phase flow heat transfer augmentation of MWCNT/HT-B Oil in both smooth and micro-fin helical tubes with constant wall temperature. The tests in laminar regime were carried out in helical tubes with three curvature ratios of 2R/d=22.1, 26.3 and 30.4. Flow Reynolds number varied from 170 to 1800 resulting in laminar flow regime. The effect of some parameters such as the nanoparticles concentration, the dimensionless curvature radius (2R/d) and the Reynolds number on heat transfer was investigated for the laminar flow regime. The weight fraction of nanoparticles in base fluid was less than 0.4%. Within the applied range of Reynolds number, results indicated that for smooth helical tube the addition of nanoparticles to the base fluid enhanced heat transfer remarkably. However, compared to the smooth helical tube, the average heat transfer augmentation ratio for finned tube was small and about 17%. Also, by increasing the weight fraction of nanoparticles in micro-fin helical tubes, no substantial changes were observed in the rate of heat transfer enhancement.
To study the influences of tunneling on the earth pressure and ground settlement when the tunnel passes through the adjacent underground retaining structure, 30 two-dimensional model tests were carried out taking into account the ratios of tunnel excavation depth (H) to lateral width (w), excavation width (B), and excavation distance using a custom-made test device and an analogical soil. Tunnel crossing adjacent existing retaining structure (TCE) and tunnel crossing adjacent newly-built retaining structure (TCN) were simulated and the earth pressure variations and ground settlement distribution during excavation were analyzed. For TCE condition, the earth pressure increments, maximum ground settlement and the curvature of the ground settlement curve are negatively related to H/B, but positively related to H/s and H/w. For TCN condition, most trends are consistent with TCE except that the earth pressure increments and the curvature of ground settlement curve are negatively related to H/w. The maximum ground settlement is larger than that observed in tunnel crossing the existing underground structure. This study provides an assessment basis for the design and construction under confined space conditions.
