A numerical work was performed to study the flow behaviors of the open channel type flow with its geometric boundary conditions being similar to that of the Multi-Stage-Flash evaporator with and without a baffle. For the analysis, two-dimensional steady turbulent flow was assumed and the widely known k-.epsilon. turbulence model was usded. SIMPLE algorithm and the power difference scheme were used for the numerical approach. Numerical results generally agree with the previous experimental results though there are some uncertainties at far downstream and near the free surface due to the three dimensionality of the flow and surface waves. Without a baffle, the flow has basically the shape of the submerged plane wall jet with its upper boundary at downstream being sharply curved toward the free surface. For the flow with a baffle, recirculation flow patterns are observed at the upper inlet portion and at the backside of the baffle. For the case without a baffle, it was also confirmed that the ratio between the liquid level and the gate opening height is the most important parameter to determine the flow behavior.

The characteristics of flow and oxygen concentration are numerically studied in Czochralski 8" silicon crystal growing process considering radiative heat transfer. The analysis of net radiative heat flux on all relevant surfaces shows growing crystal affects the heater power. Furthermore, the variation of the radiative heat flux along the crystal surface in the growing direction is confirmed and should be a cause of thermal stress and defect of the crystal. The calculated distributions of temperature and, heat flux along the wall boundaries including melt/crystal interface, free surface and crucible wall indicate that the frequently used assumption of the thermal boundary conditions of insulated crucible bottom and constant temperature at crucible side wall is not suitable to meet the real physical boundary conditions. It is necessary, therefore, to calculate radiative heat transfer simultaneously with the melt flow in order to simulate the real CZ crystal growth. If only natural convection is considered, the oxygen concentration on the melt/crystal interface decreases and becomes uniform by the application of a cusp magnetic filed. The heater power needed also increases with increasing the magnetic field. For the case of counter rotation of the crystal and crucible, the magnetic field suppresses azimutal flow produced by the crucible rotation, which results in the higher oxygen concentration near the interface.
Claesson(2001)'s analytical solution, and two numerical models with Dirichlet and Neuman interior boundary condition respectively were investigated to estimate the transient temperature distribution with distances from the Taejon underground food cold storage pilot cavern. Claesson's solution, which is based on constant temperature boundary condition at the rock wall during a temperature decline step, showed relatively good agreement with temperature measurements in the rock mass in order of average error difference, 0.89$\^{C}$ without any adjustments on laboratory thermal properties to represent the rock mass. For the numerical model with heat flux through the rock wall, a boundary condition setting technique was newly proposed to overcome the difficulty of prescribing variable convective heat tranfer coefficient and far-field air temperature inside the cavern as they may be certainly changed according to the cooling-down time. The results showed also good agreement with measurements in order of average error difference, 1.58$\^{C}$, and were compared to those of the numerical model with fixed temperature at the rock wall. Finally, the most proper procedure to precisely predict the temperature profile around a cavern was proposed as a series of analysis steps including an analytical exact solution and numerical models.
The ignition characteristics in a confined axisymmetric coflow $CH_4$ jet were investigated numerically with the Fire Dynamics Simulator(FDS). The $CH_4$ fuel stream was diluted with main combustion product gases, such as $O_2$, $N_2$, CO, $CO_2$, and $H_2O$, and the mixed fuel stream was heated up to the sufficient temperature where a supplying fuel stream can be ignited. For the calculation of chemical reaction in the simulation, a 2-step global finite chemistry model was considered. Boundary condition for confined wall was optimized by investigating the effects of wall temperature on the ignition characteristics of fuel stream. In addition, the effects of composition of diluents in the fuel stream and fuel stream temperature on the ignition of fuel steam were investigated. The ignition characteristics of $CH_4$ stream with diluents were very sensitive to the wall temperature, composition of diluents in the fuel stream and fuel stream temperature.

Two dimensional laminar natural convection in a rectangular enclousure composed of a hot bottom wall, a partially cold side wall and insulated walls except the above walls was studied by numerical analysis and also by esperiments. In the experiments, the temperature distributions in the enclosure and Nusselt number distribution along the hot and cold walls were obtained by the use of Mach-Zehnder interferometer. At first, numerical analysis with the boundary conditions of the experimental apparatus was performed and the comparison of the results of the numerical and the experimental results validated the numerical model good ennough. Heat transfer characteristics were investigated by applying the verified numerical model with the parameters, i.e. Grashof number, aspect ratio, position of cold plate and insulation condition. The results showed the optimal conditions of temperature distribution and the position of cold wall, and the characteristics of insulation materials.

Scattering fields of two dimensional acoustic waves by a circular cylinder are investigated. The present numerical approach for the acoustic scattering problem has difficulties of numerical robustness, long-time stability and suitability of far-field boundary treatments. The time-dependent periodic acoustic source is used to analyze Interference patterns between incident waves and waves reflected by the cylinder. Characteristic boundary algorithms coupled with 4th order Modified-Flux-Approach ENO(essentially non-oscillatory) schemes are employed in generalized coordinates to examine the effect of the wane frequency on the interference patterns. Non-reflecting boundary conditions, which is crustal for accurate computations of aeroacoustic problems, are used not to contaminate scattering fields by reflected waves at the outer boundary. Computed scattering fields show the circumferential acoustic modes generated by interacting between acoustic sources and scattered waves. At a lower frequency, the wave passes almost straight through the cylinder without Interacting with circular cylinder. Simulation results are presented and compared with the analytic solution. Computed RMS-pressure distribution on the cylinder wall is good agreement with exact solution.

A numerical investigation on the three-dimensional laminar natural convection heat transfer in the periodically fully developed PCB channel has been performed. When heat generating blocks mounted on the adiabatic wall make a channel with their facing shrouding wall, the flow inside the channel becomes periodically fully developed. A single module in the periodically fully developed region is chosen for computational domain in order to save computer storage and computational time. The periodic boundary condition is applied in the anlaysis. The effects of the parameters such as the Rayleigh number, the number of the modules, and the height of channel are examined to obtain the optimum condition for the enhancement of the cooling effectiveness. The result shows that the cooling effect is improved with increasing Rayleigh number and channel height, and decreasing the number of the module. The result also indicates that increasing the height of the channel and number of the module is recommended for a limited space.
A rich phenomenon in the dynamics of azimuthal vortices in a circular cylinder caused by the inertial oscillation is investigated numerically at high Reynolds numbers and moderate Rossby numbers. In the actual spin-up flow where both the Ekman circulation and the bottom friction effects are included, the first appearance of a seed vortex is generated by the Ekman boundary-layer on the bottom wall and the subsequent roll-up near the corner bounded by the side wall. The existence of the small vortex then rapidly propagates toward the inviscid region and induces a complicated pattern in the distribution of azimuthal vorticity, i.e. inertial oscillation. The inertial oscillation however does not deteriorate the classical Ekman-pumping model in the time scale larger than that of the oscillatory motion. Motions of single vortex and a pair of vortices are further investigated under a slip boundary-condition on the solid walls. For the case of single vortex, repeated change of the vorticity sign is observed together with typical propagation of inertial waves. For the case of a pair of vortices with a two-step profile in the initial azimuthal velocity, the vortices' movement toward the outer region is resisted by the crescent-shape vortices surrounding the pair. After touching the border between the core and outer regions, the pair vortices weaken very fast.
Database of a bleed model has been corrected and numerical simulations have been performed to control buzz using the corrected bleed model. The existing bleed model, which was developed as a part of a boundary condition model for porous bleed walls, underestimates bleed flow rate because flow accelerations near the bleed regions are ignored. Also, it overpredicts the sonic flow coefficient when the bleed plenum pressure ratio is high. To correct these problems, and to enhance the performance of the bleed model, the database has been corrected using CFD simulations to compensate for the flow acceleration near the bleed region. Futhermore, the database of the bleed model is extended with the second order extrapolation. The corrected bleed model is validated with numerical simulations of a shock-boundary layer interaction problem over a solid wall with a bleed region. Using the corrected bleed model, numerical simulations of supersonic inlet buzz are performed to find the deterrent effects of bleed on buzz. The results reveal that bleed is effective to prevent buzz and to enhance the inlet performance.

Flow behaviors of the open channel type flow with its geometric boundary conditions being similar to that of the Multi-Stage-Flash evaporator were studied qualitatively by measuring the velocity distribution. Without a baffle, the flow was in the shape of a simple submerged plane wall jet. At the downstream of this flow, the jet boundary made sharp curve toward the free surface ; this is because the entrainment of the ambient liquid is restricted by the free surface boundary, similar to the Coanda effect. According to the experimental results the level of the free surface appeared to be the most important parameter. The flow with a baffle was in much complicated shape ; especially the recirculating region at the downstream free surface was detected according to the experimental conditions imposed. Inlet liquid velocity, heights of the liquid level and the baffle, and the opening heights of sluice gate of the entrance were the most important parameters in the baffle flow.
