Driving mechanism, the central part of a robot, was designed in this study. Power for the motive drive was acquired by directly connecting the motor shaft in worm shape of the low-end DC motor, car window motor, to a decelerator. The decelerator consists of a worm gear to receive power from the motor shaft, a pinion gear to be connected in line with the worm gear, and an output shaft to be engaged to the pinion gear. Motion driving is achieved by the power from the motor shaft with the designed gears, transferred to the deceleration mechanism and to the output gear.
In order to maximize the speed of Theo Jansen Mechanism in an given design space and prototyping material, the trajectory path was maximized according to several literature reviews, and the lower leg was elongated maximally in order to minimize the shift between support phase and transfer phase.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of performing a cognitive task during treadmill walking on the stride rate variability. Ten university students(age $24.0{\pm}0.25$, height $172{\pm}3.1cm$, weight $66{\pm}5.3kg$) were participated in dual task experiments which consist of both walking alone and walking with a cognitive task. Two-back task was selected for the cognitive task since it did not have learning effect during the experimental procedure.3D motion analysis system was used to measure subject's position data by changing walking speed with 4.8, 5.6, 6.4, 6.8, and 7.2 km/hr. Stride rate was calculated by the time between heel contact and heel contact. Accuracy rate of a cognitive task during walking, coefficient of variance, allometric scaling methods and Fano factor were used to estimated the stride rate variability. As the walking speed increased, accuracy rate decreased and the logarithmic value of Fano factor increased which showed the statistical difference. Thus it can be concluded that the gait control mechanism is distracted by the secondary attention focus which is the cognitive task ie. two-back task. Further study is needed to clarify this by increasing the number of subject and experiment time.

Biped robot with high DOF has instability in mechanism. Therefore, it is important to guarantee walking stability of biped robot. Biped robot can stably walk on the flat ground using static walking patterns. However, walking stability of robot becomes increasingly worse on the uneven terrain. In the paper, we propose a robust walking algorithm of biped robot with motion stabilization to solve the problem The proposed algorithm was designed to stabilize walking motions based on the inclination of robot body using a gyro sensor and a accelerometer equipped in the center of the upper body. If unstable motions are recognized, angles of each joints are modified to increase stability by using compensation of angles of lower legs. The experimental results show that biped robot performs stable walking on the uneven terrain.
In this paper, we developed a miniaturized humanoid having the new joint mechanism. In general, the high torque actuator and the joint mechanism having three coincided axes are important in development of the miniaturized humanoid. By using the swash plate, which is generally used in three axes rotor mechanism, we developed a new three-coincided-axes joint mechanism and a miniaturized humanoid having the joint mechanism at its hip and ankle joints. Since the joint mechanism has a pair of parallel drive motors for each axis, the driving torque of the joint mechanism is very high. Futhermore, thanks to the three-coincided-axes mechanism, the solution of the inverse kinematics is simple and computationally efficient, and the resulting walking behavior of the humanoid becomes natural.

Purpose : This study was performed as follows in order to investigate the effect of presynaptic inhibition mechanism using the transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES) for global synkinesis (GS) on the post-stroke hemiplegic patients. Methods : The subjects consist of 38 post stroke hemiplegic patients; experiments were performed on thirty patients excluding eight. The experiment was performed on sham group, sensory level stimulation group, and motor level stimulation group for 20 minutes a day 5 times a week for 6 weeks total. We compared the differences in GS levels and walking ability. The measurements were carried out pre, immediated, post 10th, and 20th, for a total of four measurements. Results : The GS level using sEMG found significant differences between groups at the post 10th and post 20th in dorsiflexion, and post 20th in plantarflexion (p<0.05, p<0.01). The motor level group indicated more significant differences when the number of electrical stimulations increased. TUG and 10 m walking test indicated a significant difference at immediated, post 10th, and post 20th. The motor level group showed more significant decreasing tendency than the sensory level group. Conclusion: From these results, electrical stimulation using presynaptic inhibition mechanism of transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES) had positive effects for walking ability on inhibition of muscle tone in lower extremity. The motor level stimulation group experienced a more significant effect than the sensory level stimulation group. Therefore, the transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES) is considered to be effective on walking ability increasing through inhibition of muscle tone in lower extremity for rehabilitation of post stroke hemiplegic patients.

This paper describes an intelligent ankle assistive robot which provides assistive power to reduce ankle torque based on an analysis of ankle motion and muscle patterns during walking on level and sloped floors. The developed robot can assist ankle muscle power by driving an electric geared motor at the exact timing through the use of an accelerometer that detects gait phase and period, and a potentiometer to measure floor slope angle. A simple muscle assistive link mechanism is proposed to convert the motor torque into the foot assistive force. In particular, this mechanism doesn't restrain the wearer's ankle joint; hence, there is no danger of injury if the motor malfunctions. During walking, the link mechanism pushes down the top of the foot to assist the ankle torque, and it can also lift the foot by inversely driving the linkage, so this robot is useful for foot drop patients. The developed robot and control algorithm are experimentally verified through walking experiments and EMG (Electromyography) measurements.
Introduction : Orthostatic tremor develops in the legs while standing up with no weakness, pain or imbalance in the leg and the tremor is characteristically not observed when walking. However there have been some confusions about orthostatic tremor in several aspects. For the past ten years, we have observed 4 patients with orthostatic tremor. In each case tests were performed to investigate the following three important areas of inquiry about orthostatic tremor. Firstly, whether this disorder is an independent diagnostic entity or a variant of essential tremor. Secondly, whether the progress of this disorder is specifically related with standing posture. Lastly, the nature of the pathophysiologic mechanism behind the appearance of the tremor when standing after the lapse of a certain latent period and its disappearance upon the commencement of walking. Methods : Our 4 cases of orthostatic tremor were studied clinically, electrophysiologically, and pharmacologically. Electrophysiological tests included tremor spectrum test and electromyography. Results : We observed the presence of this tremor in several other tonic postures, as well as its absence, in a vertically lifted position from all our cases. Our cases registered a variable tremor frequency between 5 and 12 Hz according to the tremor spectrum test and EMG. Furthermore all our 4 cases demonstrated patterns of both synchronous EMG activity and alternating EMG activity at various times in homologous muscles of both legs. Orthostatic tremor was improved significantly with propranolol as well as clonazepam. Conclusions : From the results of our study we drew the following conclusions. It is probable that orthostatic tremor is simply a variant of essential tremor rather than being an independent diagnostic entity and that in most cases its development is specifically related with muscle contraction rather than merely with the act of standing. Furthermore we discovered a clue in the previously described neural control mechanism that the nuclear bag fibers in the muscle spindle have lag time of several seconds in their response to muscle strength and that their baseline does not reset fully in rapidly moving muscle. This neural control mechanism could offer sufficient explanation for the phenomena of tremor appearance when standing and disappearance when walking in orthostatic tremor.
This paper presents a new family of 4-DoF parallel mechanism with two platforms. The new mechanism is composed of front and rear platforms, and three limbs. Two limbs with 6dof joint (P-P-S-P) are attached to the each platform and are perpendicular to baseplate, while the middle limb with 4-Dof joints (R-R-R-P or R-R-P-P) is attached to the revolute joint that connect front and rear platform. The two-DoF-driving mechanism at the middle limb with two base-fixed prismatic actuators can generate the heaving and roll motions or two translational motions. Therefore, Therefore, the new 4-Dof parallel mechanism (1T-3R) can generate pitch motions at each platforms, roll, and heaving motions, while another type of new 4-Dof parallel mechanism (2T-2R) can generate pitch motions at each platforms, x and z translational motions. For 1T-3R mechanism, kinematic analyses including inverse, forward kinematics, and Jacobian are performed.
This paper is about intelligent hexapod robot for the support walking of the aged person. The robot using various sensors and small camera has various abilities of forward backward walking, turing left or right, control the speed of walking, avoiding the obstacles and detecting risky situation of fire or gas. To let the aged feel soft and safe walking, we used special servo motor and developed hexapod walking mechanism and effective algorithm.
