A numerical simulation of wake behavior behind three-dimensional wings in ground effect is done using an indirect boundary element method (Panel Method). An integral equation is obtained by applying Green's 2nd Identity on all surfaces of the flow domain. The AIC is constructed by imposing the no penetration condition on solid surfaces, and the Kutta at the wing's trailing edge. The ground effect is included using an image method. At each time step, a row of wake panels from wings' trailing edge are convected downstream following the force-free condition. The roll-up of wake vortices behind wings in close proximity is simulated.

A numerical model for the analysis of the marine propeller including wake roll-up is presented. In this study, we apply a higher-order panel method, which is based on a B-spine representation for both generations of the propeller geometry and hydrodynamic solutions, to predict the flow around the propeller blades. The present model is validated by comparison of the experimental measurements. The results show that the present method is able to predict the improved pressure distributions on the blade surface, especially very close to propeller tip regions, where other panel methods without the wake roll-up model give erroneous results.

The wake geometries of a two-bladed rotor in axial flights using a time-marching free-wake method without a non-physical model of the far wake are calculated. The computed free-wake geometries of AH-1G model rotor in climb flight are compared with the experimental visualization results. The time-marching free-wake method can predict the behavior of the tip vortex and the wake roil-up phenomena with remarkable agreements. Tip vortices shed from the two-bladed rotor can interact with each other significantly. The interaction consists of a turn of the tip vortex from one blade rolling around the tip vortex from the other. Wake expansion of wake geometries in radial direction after the contraction is a result of adjacent tip vortices begging to pair together and spiral about each other. Detailed numerical results show regular pairing phenomenon in the climb flights, the hover at high angle of attack and slow descent flight too. On the contrary, unstable motions of wake are observed numerically in the hover at low angle of attack and fast descent flight. It is because of the inherent wake instability and blade-vortex-interaction rather then the effect of recirculation due to the experimental equipment.
The wake shapes behind wings in formation flight are very important to the aerodynamics and performances of aircrafts. In the present study, a discrete vortex methood is extended to handle the wake rollups behind multiple wings. It was found that the relative distance between the wings and the rotational direction of the wingtip vortices have significant effect on the movement of the wingtip vortices. When the wings are close to each other, the wingtip vortices moved faster than the wings of large relative distances. The vortex pair of opposite signs generated from each wingtip has an effect of moving the wingtip vortices upward. The relative height between the wings has an effect of moving the wingtips along the centerline of each vortex. The wakeshape behind multiple wings is a function of the relative distances and thus is dependent on the configuration of the formation flight. In the futhre, a study on the vortex movement pattern will be studied.
A low-order potential based boundary element method is applied for the prediction of the performance of flapped rudders as well as all-movable rudders in steady inflow. In order to obtain a reasonable solution at large angles of attack, the location of the trailing wake sheet is determined by aligning freely with the local flow. The effect of the wake sheet roll-up is also included with use of a high order panel method. The flow in the gap of a flapped rudder is modeled as Couette flow and its effect is introduced into the kinematic boundary conditions for flux at both the inlet and the outlet of the gap. In order to validate the present method, the method is applied for a series of rudders and the computational results on forces and moments are compared with experimental data. The effect of the gap size on the forces and moments is also presented.

A three-dimensional higher order boundary element method based on the B-spline is presented. The method accurately models piecewise continuous bodies and induced velocity potentials using B-spline tensor product representations, and it is capable of obtaining accurate pointwise values for the potential and its derivatives, especially in the trailing edge and tip region of the lift generating body, which may be difficult or impossible to evaluate with constant panel methods. In addition, we implement a wake roll-up and examine the tip vortex formation in the near wake region. The results are compared with existing numerical results and the results of experiments performed out at the cavitation tunnel of Chungnam National University.
The turbulent flow around a sphere was investigated using two experimental techniques: smoke-wire flow visualization in wind tunnel at Re=5300, 11000 and PIV measurements in a circulating water channel. The smoke-wire visualization shows flow separation points near an azimuthal angle of $90^{\circ}$, recirculating flow, transition from laminar to turbulent shear layer, evolving vortex roll-up and fully turbulent eddies in the sphere wake. The mean velocity field measured using a PIV technique in x-y center plane demonstrates the detailed near-wake structure such as nearly symmetric recirculation region, two toroidal vortices, laminar separation, transition and turbulent eddies. The PIV measurements of turbulent wake in y-z planes show that a recirculating vortex pair dominates the near-wake region.
To predict the airloads on helicopter rotors in hover, the doublet panel method of the first order is applied. For this simulation, the rotor blade is divided into many panels both in spanwise and in chordwise direction, and Kocurek-Tangler's prescribed wake with roll-up process is taken for determing wake geometry and then represented by vortex lattice. To abtain more physically realistic calculation of induced velocity, the vortex core model is adopted and the compressibility effect is considered by Karman-Tsien rule.
The turbulent flow around a sphere was investigated in a streamwise meridian plane using two experimental techniques: smoke-wire flow visualization in wind tunnel at Re=5,300 and PIV measurements in a circulating water channel at Re=7,400. The smoke-wire visualization shows flow separation points near an azimuthal angle of $90^{\circ}$, recirculating flow, transition from laminar to turbulent shear layer, evolving vortex roll-up and fully turbulent eddies in the sphere wake. In addition, the mean flow pattern extracted by particle tracing method in water tunnel at Re= 14,500 reveals two distinct comparable toroidal(not closed) vortices in the recirculation region. The mean velocity field measured using a PIV technique demonstrates the detailed wake configuration of close symmetric recirculation and near-wake configuration with two toroidal vortices, reversed velocity zone and vorticity contours.
The fluid propulsion mechanism of two oscillating flat plates is studied numerically using a discrete vortex method. Presently, the flat plates are assumed to be rigid. To analyze the closely coupled aerodynamic interference between the flat plates, a core addition scheme and a vortex core model are combined together. A calculated wake pattern for a flat plate in heaving oscillation motion is compared with the flow visualization. The effect of wake shapes on the aerodynamic characteristics of the flat plate in pitching oscillation is investigated. The velocity profiles behind the flat plates in pitching oscillations are plotted to investigate the possible thrust generation mechanism.
