Despite the massive effort which has been given to the analysis of the base flows, one commonly occurring case seems to be overlooked. This is for base (rearward facing surface) which is between a subsonic flow and supersonic flow. Potential flows of the air and gas streams are computed for the flow past a separated wake. Then a viscous jet mixing is superimposed on this inviscid solution. Conservation of mass, momentum and energy is achieved by multiple iterations. Despite the iterations, the wake flow field is computed with modest computer requirements.
In this paper, we present the CFD and experimental results for flow characteristics as well as pressure fluctuation in a T-type ball valve. In the experiment, flow visualization for the wake is performed with a fluorescent dye. In CFD, the valve flow is simulated three-dimensionally using a commercial fluid analysis code, FLUENT 6.0. FFT analysis to the pressure fluctuation in the wake region is also calculated Analysis results show that the characteristic frequency of the wake flow is strongly dependent on the Reynolds number.
Discharge flows from a centrifugal pump impeller with a specific speed of 150 [rpm, m$^3$/min, m] were experimentally investigated. A large axisymmetric collector instead of a volute casing was installed to obtain circumferentially uniform flow, i.e. without interaction of the impeller and the volute. The unsteady flow was measured at the impeller exit and vaneless diffuser using a hot film probe and a pressure transducer. The flow at impeller exit showed pronounced jet-wake flow patterns. The wake, which was on the suction/hub side at high flow rate, became enlarged pitchwisely on both the hub and the shroud side as the flow rate decreases. The pitchwise non-uniformity of the flow rapidly decreased along the downstream and the non-uniformity almost disappeared at radius ratio of 1.18 for medium flow rate. The mean vaneless diffuser flow was reasonably predicted using a one dimensional analysis when an empirical constant was used to specify the skin friction coefficient. The data can be used for a centrifugal pump impeller design and validation of CFD codes and flow modeling.
A stereo-PIV (particle image velocimetry) technique is used to investigate the vortical structure of the wake behind a rotating propeller in the present study. A four bladed propeller is tested in a cavitaion tunnel without any wake screen. Hundreds of instantaneous velocity fields are phase-averaged to reveal the three dimensional spatial evolution of the flow behind the propeller. The results of conventional 2-D PIV are also compared with those of the stereo-PIV to understand the vortical structure of propeller wake deeply. The variations of radial and axial velocities in the 2-D PIV results seem to be affected by the out-of-plane motion. generating a little perspective error in the in-plane velocity components of the slipstream. The strong out-of-plane motion around the hub vortex also causes the perspective error to vary the axial velocity component a little at the near wake region. The out-of-plane velocity component had the maximum value of about 0.3U0 in the tip vortices and continued its magnitude in the wake region.
This work numerically investigates the effects of Reynolds number ReD (= 100 - 150), cross-sectional aspect ratio AR = ( 0.25 -1.0), and attack angle α (= 0° - 90°) on the forces, Strouhal number, and wake of an elliptical cylinder, where ReD is based on the freestream velocity and cylinder cross-section height normal to the freestream flow, AR is the ratio of the minor axis to the major axis of the elliptical cylinder, and α is the angle between the cylinder major axis and the incoming flow. At ReD = 100, two distinct wake structures are identified, namely 'Steady wake' (pattern I) and 'Karman wake followed by a steady wake (pattern II)' when AR and α are varied in the ranges specified. When ReD is increased to 150, an additional wake pattern, 'Karman wake followed by secondary wake (pattern III)' materializes. Pattern I is characterized by two steady bubbles forming behind the cylinder. Pattern II features Karman vortex street immediately behind the cylinder, with the vortex street transmuting to two steady shear layers downstream. Inflection angle αi = 32°, 37.5° and 45° are identified for AR = 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75, respectively, where the wake asymmetry is the greatest. The αi effectively distinguishes the dependence on α and AR of force and vortex shedding frequency at either ReD. In Pattern III, the Karman street forming behind the cylinder is modified to a secondary vortex street. At a given AR and α, ReD = 150 renders higher fluctuating lift and Strouhal number than ReD = 100.
The characteristics of wake galloping phenomenon for two parallel/unparallel circular cylinders were investigated via wind tunnel tests. The two cylinders were initially deployed in parallel and wake galloping phenomena were observed by varying the center-to-center distance. The effect of an unparallel arrangement of two cylinders was next investigated by fixing the spacing ratio of one side of the cylinders at 5.0D and the other side at 3.0D, in which D represents the diameter of the cylinder. For the unparallel disposition, the 5.0D side showed a small, limited vibration while the 3.0D side produced much larger amplitude of vibration, resulting in a rolling motion. However, the overall amplitude appeared to decrease in unparallel disposition when compared with the amplitude of the 3.0D - 3.0D parallel case. This represents the mitigation effect of wake galloping due to the unparallel disposition between two cylinders. Flow visualization tests with particle image velocimetry were conducted to identify flow fields between two cylinders. The test results demonstrate the existence of a complex interaction of the downstream cylinder with the shear layer generated by the upstream cylinder. When the spacing ratio was large enough, the shear layer was not observed and the downstream cylinder showed only limited random vibration.
The accurate prediction of the flow and the pressure distribution near the tip of the blade is crucial in determining the tip vortex cavitation inception which usually occurs on the blade tip or inside the core of the tip vortex just downstream of the blade tip. An improved boundary element method is applied to the prediction of the flow around propeller blades, with emphasis at the tip region. In the method, the Blow adapted grid and a higher order panel method, which combines a hyperboloidal panel geometry with a hi-quadratic dipole distribution, are used in order to accurately model the trailing wake geometry and the highly rolled-up regions in the wake. The method is applied to several propeller geometries and the results have been found to agree well to the existing experimental data. Inviscid flow methods are able to predict the pressures at the tip as well as the shape of the trailing wake. On the other hand, they are unable to determine the flow inside the viscous core of the tip vortex, where cavitation inception often occurs. Thus, a method is presented that treats the flow inside the viscous core. The inner flow is treated with a 2-D Clavier-stokes solution without making any assumptions for axisymmetric flow and conicity of the flow along the tip trajectory. The method can thus allow the treatment of general propeller blade configurations. The velocity and pressure distributions inside the core are shown and compared to those from other numerical methods.
In this paper, flow in the wake region of a butterfly valve is studied numerically and experimentally. The disk angle of the valve is fixed as $30^{\circ}$ and the free stream velocity as 0.13m/s in the experiment. Numerical analysis is performed in similitude of the experiment. The standard LES model is used to represent the turbulence effect in the commercial code Fluent 5.5. It is shown that the numerical result is similar to the experimental result for the wake flow of a butterfly-type valve.
Flow patterns were measured in an unshrouded centrifugal impeller. The flow rate in measurements was fixed at the value corresponding to a nearly zero incidence at the blade inlet. By using a single slanted hot-wire probe and a Kiel probe mounted on the impeller hub disk, the 3-D relative velocities and the rotary stagnation pressures were measured in seven circumferential planes from the inlet to the outlet of the impeller rotating at 700rpm, which diameter is 0.39 meter, and the static pressures and the slip factor at the impeller outlet were calculated from the measured values. From the measured data, the primary/secondary flows, the leakage flows, the wake-jet flows, static pressure distribution on blade surfaces and the wake production mechanism in the impeller passage were investigated.
This experimental study investigates the wake flow behind a pair of cylinders displaced normal to a free stream. In this experiment, the principal aim is to investigate the transition mechanism of the large vortex generating process in the wake having unique vortex shedding pattern. associated with the gap difference between the cylinders. The detailed visualization is carried out using the PIV measurement. The transition mechanism of the large generating vortex is clarified by showing the streak lines. the vorticity and the statistical fluctuating velocity distributions.
