The wake behavior of extended flat plate and serration in the trailing edge of S809 airfoil is presented in this experimental study using wind tunnel testing. The clustering of wind turbines in wind parks has recently been a pressing issue, due to the expected increase in power output and deciding the number of wind turbines to be installed. One of the prominent factors which influence the performance of the subsequent wind turbines is the downstream wake characteristics. A series of wind tunnel investigations were performed to assess the downstream near wake characteristics of the S809 airfoil at various angles of attack corresponding to the Reynolds Number Re = 2.02 × 105. These experimental results revealed the complex nature of the downstream near wake characteristics featuring substantial asymmetry arising out of the incoherent flow separations prevailing over the suction and the pressure sides of the airfoil. Based on the experimental results, it is found that the wake width and the downstream velocity ratio decrease with an increase in the angle of attack. Nonetheless, the dissipation length and downstream velocity ratio increases proportionally in the downstream direction. Additionally, attempts were made to understand the physical nature of the near wake characteristics at 1C, 2C, 3C and 4C downstream locations.

To generate electricity from wind energy, wind turbine generally has a rotor blade. Since this rotor blade is a kind of the rotating machinery, the wake from the rotor is very Important role in the side of the aerodynamic performances. Thus the study about wake is essential to analyze wind turbine aerodynamics. In this study wake characteristics are analyzed by hot-wire probe in the K.A.F.A(Korea Air Force Academy) wind tunnel. It is possible to analyze the wake characteristics by hot-wire probe from acquiring the velocity fluctuations at given positions in the flow. This velocity data are arranged by trigger signal at same azimuth of the blade in periodic manner of the rotor blade. From this various wake characteristics are found : radial and axial position of the tip vortex, vortex core characteristics in the flow etc.
Characteristics of bubble driven wakes were investigated in a simulated GTL process(0.102 m ${\times}$ 1.5 m in height) with viscous liquid medium. Effects of gas velocity(0.04 ~ 0.12 m/s) and liquid viscosity(0.001 ~ 0.050 $Pa{\cdot}s$) on the wake characteristics such as rising velocity, frequency, size and holdup were determined by employing a resistivity probe method. The wake phase formed behind the rising multi-bubbles as well as single bubbles were detected effectively from the conductivity fluctuations measured by the probe. Compressed, filtered and regulated air and aqueous solutions of Carboxy Methyl Cellulose(CMC) were used as a dispersed gas phase and a continuous liquid medium, respectively. It was found that the rising velocity and size of wake phase increased with an increase in gas velocity or liquid viscosity. The holdup and frequency of wake phase increased with increasing gas velocity due to the increase of gas input into the process with increasing gas velocity. However, the values of holdup and frequency of wake phase decreased with increasing liquid viscosity, since the size of bubbles and thus that of wakes increased with increasing liquid viscosity. The ratio of wake holdup to that of gas phase, which was in the range of 0.25 ~ 0.48, increased with an increase in liquid viscosity but decreased with gas velocity. The wake characteristics were well correlated in terms of operating variables within this experimental conditions.

An experimental study has been performed to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of impinging jets with corrugated nozzle and wake generation plate. Three different shapes of corrugated nozzle and five different shapes of wake generation plate were tested to improve the heat transfer characteristics of impinging jet. Heat transfer coefficients were obtained by using transient method based on the liquid crystal thermography. The effects of corrugated nozzle and wake generation plate on the heat transfer characteristics of impinging jets were discussed in detail. The results showed that both the corrugated nozzle and the wake generation plate improved the heat transfer characteristics of impinging jet. Especially, heat transfer coefficients around stagnation region of impinging jets were highly increased.
In this study, we investigate the wake characteristics in laminar inflow and two different turbulent inflow cases. To solve the flow with wind turbines and its wake, we use large eddy simulation (LES) technique with actuator line method (ALM) and turbulent inflow of Turbsim. We perform the quantitative analysis of velocity deficit and turbulent intensity in laminar inflow case and turbulent inflow case with different turbulent intensity. In turbulent inflow, unsteady strong wake recovery which is highly fluctuated in time. Normalized power in turbulent inflow case is also highly fluctuated with unsteady wake recovery, while that in laminar inflow has quasi steady characteristic in power generation.

An experimental study was carried out to investigate near-wake characteristics of an elliptic airfoil oscillating in pitch. The airfoil was sinusoidally pitched about the half chord point between -5$^{\circ}$and +25$^{\circ}$angles of attack at the freestream velocities of 3.4 and 23.1 m/s. The corresponding Reynolds numbers based on the chord length were 3.3$\times$10$_{4}$ and 2.2$\times$10$^{5}$ , respectively. A hot-wire anemometer was used to measure the near-wake flow variables at the reduced frequency of 0.1. Ensemble-averaged velocity and turbulence intensity profiles were presented to examine the near-wake characteristics depending on the Reynolds number. The axial velocity deficit in the near-wake region tends to decrease with the increase in the Reynolds number as found in many stationary airfoil tests. Turbulence intensity in the near-wake region have a tendency to decrease with the -increase in the Reynolds number during the pitch-up motion, whereas it shows different feature during the pitch-down motion according to the separation characteristics.

The wake generated by a wind turbine has an effect on performance of a downstream wind turbine as well as mechanical loads. This paper investigated characteristics of fatigue load at the blade root due to the wake effects and quantitatively analyzed its effects at operating condition of a 5MW tripod offshore wind turbine using Bladed 4.1 software. The wake effects was studied the way the wake's center position move from the rotor center to the blade tip to the far-away position where the wake doesn't affect the wind turbine. When wake's center was located on the blade tip or the rotor center, damage equivalent fatigue load was higher than other positions. It was up to 10~14% compared to those of non-wake case. Results of this study would be helpful to design wind turbines and wind farms to have lifetimes more than 20 years of the wind turbine.

Experimental and numerical investigations were conducted to identify the wake characteristics downstream of two vane-type vortex generators over laminar flat plate boundary layer. Experimental study was carried out by using the stereoscopic particle image velocimetry. To describe the flow field around the vortex generator in detail, numerical study was performed. We considered two different planform shapes of vortex generator: triangular and rectangular shape. The height of the generator was chosen to be about the boundary layer thickness at the position of its installation. Two different lengths of the generator were chosen: two and five times the height. Wake measurements were carried out at three angles of attack for each configuration. Wake characteristics for each case such as overall vortical structure, vorticity distribution, and location of vortex center with downstream distance were obtained from the PIV data. Wake characteristics, as expected, were found to vary strongly with the geometry and angle of attack so that no general tendency could be deduced. Causes of this irregular tendency were explained by using the results of the numerical simulation.

The effects of thermal stratification on the flow of a stratified fluid past a circular cylinder were examined in a wind tunnel. In order to produce strong thermal stratifications, a compact heat exchanger type variable electric heater is employed. Linear temperature gradient of up to $250^{\circ}C/m$ can be well sustained. The velocity and temperature profiles in the cylinder wake with a strong thermal gradient of $200^{\circ}C/m$ were measured and the smoke wire flow visualization method was used to investigate the wake characteristics. It is found that the temperature field effects as an active contaminant, so that the mean velocity and temperature profiles can not sustain their symmetricity about the wake centerline when such a strong thermal gradient is superimposed. It is evident that the turbulent mixing in the upper half section is stronger than that of the lower half of the wake in a stably stratified flow.
A series of towing tank tests were carried out for 18 full ship models of high block coefficients. The resistance coefficients and wake distribution at the propeller plane were measured and carefully examined. Regression analysis was employed to find out the relationships with the hull form parameters. Equations for wave resistance coefficient, form factor, and nominal wake are given. A harmonic analysis of measured wake was performed to look into the influence of the local stern shape on the magnitude of fluctuating wake components at three different radii. The amplitude of wake harmonics was also expressed by regression quations. It was found that the regression formulas were very useful in estimating resistance and circumferential wake characteristics of full ship models. It was also considered that the formulas presented in this paper could be utilized in the hull form improvement in a preliminary design.
