Health Inequalities Among Korean Employees

  • Background: Social status might be a determinant of occupational health inequalities. This study analyzed the effects of social status on both work environments and health outcomes. Methods: The study sample consisted of 27,598 wage employees aged 15 years and older from among the Korean Working Condition Survey participants in 2011. Work environments included atypical work, physical risks, ergonomic risks, work demands, work autonomy, social supports, and job rewards. Health outcomes comprised general health, health and safety at risk because of work, the World Health Organization-5 Well-being Index, work-related musculoskeletal disease, and work-related injury. Multivariable logistic-regression models were used to identify the associations between social status and work environments and health outcomes. Results: Employees in the demographically vulnerable group had lower occupational status compared with their counterparts. Low social status was largely related to adverse work environments. Especially, precarious employment and manual labor occupation were associated with both adverse work environments and poor health outcomes. Conclusion: Precarious and manual workers should take precedence in occupational health equity policies and interventions. Their cumulative vulnerability, which is connected to demographics, occupational status, adverse work environments, or poor health outcomes, can be improved through a multilevel approach such as labor market, organizations, and individual goals.

A Computable General Equilibrium-Top Down Behavioral Microsimulation on Assessing the Philippine Tax Reform

  • The purpose of the study is to investigate the simulated effects of the Philippine tax reform, which is called Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion Law, on household income and occupational choice. The study utilized the Family Income Expenditure Survey and tax collection as input to Computable General Equilibrium-Top Down Behavioral Microsimulation approach to determine the effect of Philippine tax reform on household income and occupational choice. The results of the study show that the household income in the Philippines will increase due to the implementation of the Philippine tax reform. Also, the study had found that tax reform results drive the household to shift from being farming entrepreneur to salaried workers since the utility derived from being workers is much higher compared to the utility derived from being entrepreneur. The findings of this research suggest that the Philippine Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion Law is beneficial to the household since their income would increase, which will further result to an increase in their capability to buy goods and services. However, the tax reform would also lead to imbalance between the distribution of numbers of workers across sectors such as entrepreneurial farming, entrepreneurial non-farming, and wage sector.

온실구조기준 및 온실공사 품셈을 활용한 스마트 온실 단가 현실화 연구 (Realization of Smart Greenhouse Cost Using Greenhouse Structural Code and Greenhouse Construction Estimate)

  • This study analyzed the effects of building and greenhouse structural code on the structural design and the greenhouse construction cost. The over-design possibility of greenhouse was analyzed when building structural code was applied using standard smart greenhouse drawings. The possibility of decrease in greenhouse construction cost was investigated if the currently applied building structural code was replaced with greenhouse structural code. As a result of comparing the member sizes with the standard drawings, building structural code was designed with 13%~74% more steel than greenhouse structural code. When building construction estimate was replaced with greenhouse construction estimate, it was possible to reduce the total construction cost of the glass greenhouse by 17% and that of the vinyl greenhouse by 14%. Since there is no standard construction estimate suitable for greenhouses, the wage unit price is set excessively, and the construction cost of the smart greenhouse is increasing. In conclusion, it is necessary to establish greenhouse structural code and greenhouse construction estimate to lower the greenhouse construction cost.

4차산업혁명 대응 기술로서 로봇이 노동 시장과 무역에 미치는 영향 (The effects of Robot as 4th industry revolution Technology on Labor Market and Trade)

  • As a 4th industrial revolution technology, robots are changing the form of labor market and trade in Korea. In the future, changes in the international trade order are expected to move in the direction of shortening global supply chains and restricting trade between countries. Accordingly, reshoring of relocating overseas production facilities to Korea or near-shoring of relocating overseas production facilities to neighboring allies may expand. In this context, this study analyzed the impact of robot introduction on the domestic labor market and trade based on firm-level data. As a result of analysis based on the 'business activity data' accumulated from 2017 to 2019, the introduction of robot technology was analyzed to expand low-wage, low-skilled employment. Analysis on trade shows that the introduction of robots decreases exports and increases imports. In order to expand exports through the technology of the 4th industrial revolution, employment expansion and robot introduction should occur at the same time, rather than replacing the labor force with robots. In addition, it is thought that reshoring's goal of risk management can be achieved when a stable supply chain for imports of raw materials or essential goods, which are difficult to transfer to Korea, is established together.

  • 본 논문은 경제의 개방화 진전이 고용구조에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지에 대한 주제를 다루고 있다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 경제주체의 이질성(heterogeneity)을 가미하여 Romer(1990)의 내생적 성장모형을 확장하였다. 이와 같은 이질성에 기반하여 본 모형은 한 경제의 고용구조(숙련 및 미숙련 부문의 상대적 고용의 크기)가 숙련노동의 수요 및 공급 조건에 따라 어떻게 결정되는지를 설명한다. 본 모형은 폐쇄경제에 기반하고 있으나 개방경제의 경우로 확장 가능하다. 개방경제의 경우로 확장된 모형에 따르면, 경제의 개방화 진전은 다음과 같은 두 가지 경로를 통해 고용구조에 영향을 미친다. 하나는 생산특화(specialization)를 통한 경로로서 개방 경제하에서 각국은 비교우위에 기반하여 부문별 생산량을 결정하는데, 이에 따라 부문별 노동수요가 결정되고 이는 고용구조에 영향을 미치게 된다. 다른 하나는 지식확산(knowledge spillover)을 통한 경로로서 경제의 개방화 진전은 지식확산을 촉진하는데, 이는 부문별 노동생산성에 영향을 미치고 따라서 고용구조에도 영향을 미치게 된다. 21개국의 국제패널자료를 이용하여 실증분석해 본 결과, 경제의 개방화 진전은 상기한 모형이 설명하는 바와 같이 위의 두 가지 경로를 통해 고용구조에 영향을 미침을 확인할 수 있었다.

개정노동법과 종합병원의 노무관리전략 (Revisioned Labour Law and Labour Management Strategy in Hospital)

  • Revisioned labour law was confirmed by vote of National Assembly on 1st January 2010. Under revisions labour law the necessity was expressed to reconstruct and change the relationship between labour and management in hospital. This study was described to investigate the operational statement of labour union in general hospital and to investigate how the labour policy would be change and which form would be appear in labour union in hospital. The survey results which was operated targeting labour managers in hospital were as follows ; first, in the possibility of plural labour unions establishment, university hospital labour managers forecasted the possibility as high. but non-university hospital labour managers forecasted the possibility as low. second, even though the plural union labours would be established in hospitals there would be no difficulties in collective bargaining between labour and management. third, the labour union activities would not be shrink even though there would be wage pay prohibition for the full-time union laboures. As the wage pay prohibition acted on the full-time union labours, countermeasures are required as follows; first, there is a possibility that there will be diversity in the form of full-time union labours. It is need to make the criterion of hospital about the limit of full-time labour union members. It is need to make the criterion of labour activities of non-working hour exception. It is need to cope with the diverse demands of labour union which aim to solve the financial burdens. As the plural labour unions are permitted it is need to make countermeasures as follows ; To analyze whether there is a possibility by the establishment of new labour to be plural labour unions. To establish the countermeasures in short-term aspect to make the countermeasures to cope with the establishment of plural labour unions. In long-term aspect to establish labour and management strategies. Henceforth, found on the revisions labour law, it is need to provide in hospitals as follows; first, it is need to prepare labour management policies and substitutes which suitable for plural labour union period. Second, it is need to determine concretely on the related matters of the union labours and to develop the conclusion guidelines which preparing infective criteria. Third, to examine the effects on the hospital organization by organizational forms of labour union which is weak in financial aspect.

한국의 생산요소가격 변화가 마크업의 변동에 미치는 영향에 관한 실증분석: 1975-2007 (Factor Prices and Markup in the Korean Manufacturing Industry: An Empirical Analysis 1975-2007)

  • 1997년 말에 시작된 외환위기 이후 약 10여 년간에 걸쳐서 생산요소가격이 지속적으로 하락하였다. 생산요소시장에서 요소가격의 전반적인 하락현상은 기업의 수익구조와 기업의 가격설정행위에 지대한 영향을 미친 것으로 추론할 수 있다. 본 논문은 요소가격의 변화로 인해 기업의 이윤율과 시장의 구조를 반영하는 마크업의 크기와 마크업의 경기역행성에 어떠한 변화가 일어났는가를 실증적으로 분석하였다. 이를 위해 해외중간재를 포함하고 규모보수불변과 AR(1) 기술진보를 전제하는 생산함수에 근거하여 소규모 개방경제에서의 마크업방정식을 설정하였다. 분석결과에 의하면 외환위기 이후의 생산요소가격의 하락은 한계비용의 하락을 초래하였고 이에 따라 제조업의 마크업 상승을 가져왔으며 특히 제조업가운데서 내구재보다는 비내구재의 마크업의 상승에 영향을 주었다고 할 수 있다. 또한 HP-filtered GDP와 마크업방정식의 구성요소와의 회귀분석결과는 마크업은 경기역행적으로 실질임금과 노동분배율은 경기순행적임을 입증하였으며 이자율과 해외중간재 수입물가지수는 경기역행적으로 그리고 나머지 요소분배율 모두 경기순행성을 밝히고 있다. 결론적으로 생산요소시장에서의 가격변화가 제조업의 마크업변동의 경직성에 기여해왔다고 할 수 있다.

청년층 실업과 엄친아효과 (Youth Unemployment and the Effect of My Mom's Friend's Son)

  • 기존의 직업탐색이론을 한 단계 진전시킬 수 있는 '엄친아효과' 개념을 도입하고 그것이 청년층 미취업탈출확률에 미치는 효과를 부모님의 학력, 임시 일용직 비율, 대 중소기업 임금격차 비율 등의 대리변수들로 측정하고자 하였다. 추정 결과, 최근으로 올수록 소위 '엄친아효과'는 점차 강화되고 있다는 사실이 확인된다. 정책 함의로는 청년층의 구직기간 축소와 실업탈출 확률의 제고라는 측면에서 노동시장에서 임금이나 일자리 질의 격차가 계속 확대되는 것은 결코 바람직하지 못하며, 또한 청년층 실업문제가 단순히 노동시장 정보의 정확한 제공만으로는 쉽게 해결되기 어렵다는 점 등을 도출해 낼 수 있다.

세무공무원이 경험하는 직무스트레스가 직무만족과 심리적 웰빙에 미치는 영향 (Influence of Tax Officials' Occupational Stress on Job Satisfaction and Psychological Well-being)

  • 본 연구는 세무공무원들의 직무스트레스요인과 직무만족 그리고 심리적 웰빙 간의 관계를 실증적으로 분석하여 세무공무원의 직무스트레스요인의 효과적인 관리방안을 제시함을 연구목적으로 한다. 분석결과, 세무공무원들이 세무업무를 수행하는 과정에서 인식하게 되는 직무스트레스요인들은 직무만족도에 부정적인 영향을 미치며, 직무에 대한 만족도가 높을수록 심리적인 웰빙은 높아져 세무행정업무수행의 효율성을 높일 수 있고 납세자들의 세무서비스만족도를 높이는데 효과가 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서 직무스트레스를 감소하고 업무효율성을 증진하기 위해서는 행정지원요인과 대우관련요인, 업무관련요인의 개선과 세무공무원들의 역할과 중요성을 고려한 복지의 확충 그리고 사기증진을 위한 지방자치단체에서의 급여보충과 직무만족 향상을 위한 제도적인 보완이 요구된다고 하겠다.

Mediation analysis of chronotype, sleep-related factors, and depressive symptoms among workers: a cross-sectional study

  • Background: This study aimed to examine the impact of chronotype on depressive symptoms and explore the mediating effects of sleep quality, pre-sleep cognitive arousal, and social jetlag in a sample of wage earners. Methods: A total of 3,917 waged workers were surveyed online in July 2022. Logistic regression and mediation analysis were used to assess the relationship between chronotype (morningness, intermediate, and eveningness) and depressive symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire ≥ 5), and the mediating effects of Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and Pre-Sleep Arousal Scale (PSAS). All analyses were adjusted for age, education level, income level, marital status, coffee consumption, alcohol consumption, physical activity, occupation, employment status, and working hours to calculate odds ratios (ORs). Results: The chronotypes of all the participants were divided into morningness (4.7%), intermediate (93.5%), and eveningness (1.8%). Multiple logistic regression analysis showed an increased risk of depression in the eveningness chronotype (OR: 2.96; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.51, 5.86). Regarding the mediation analysis, ISI mediated 28.44% (95% CI: 16.39-40.5), PSQI for 31.25% (95% CI: 19.36, 43.15), and PSAS-Cognitive Score (PSAS-C) for 23.58% (95% CI: 10.66, 36.50) of the association between chronotype and depressive symptoms. However, social jetlag did not significantly mediate this relationship. (percentage mediated = 0.75%, 95% CI: -3.88, 5.39) Conclusions: Evening chronotypes exhibit an increased risk of depressive symptoms, which ISI, PSQI, and PSAS-C partially mediated. This suggests that interventions to improve sleep quality and maintain adequate sleep habits may effectively prevent and treat depression in employees with an eveningness chronotype.
