  • In this paper, n study a distributed establishment scheme to setup lightpath in WDM/TDM Network considering user traffic characteristics. We propose a GBTA(guaranteed-bandwidth time-slot allocation) algorithm which assigns time-slots according to the requred traffic so that it can utilize given network resources efficiently in RWTA(routing and wavelength time-slot assignment) schemes. We consider traffic specification on the basis of ATM traffic classes. Also, in order to increase link utilization and minimize blocking probability, we extend distributed lightpath establishment protocol based on GBTA algorithm. In order to establish lightpath in distributed WDM/IDM network, we use backward resonation protocol that resewes resource with recent information. We use DOWTns(Distributed Optical WDM/TDM ns) that is extended from NS(Network Simulator), in order to verify proposed GBTA-based optical wavelength routed network.

  • Multihop lightwave networks are the optical-fiber based local communication systems that employ WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technology to fully use the enormous fiber bandwidth without requiring any tunable tranceives. In this paper, we introduce a novel ShuffleNet topology, asymmetric bilayered ShuffleNet(ABS) topology as a multihop WDM network technique. For 1Gb/s transmission system, we compared ABS topology with previously reported ones in terms of common network parameters such as average number of hops, throughput, time delay, and network power function. Through the analysis, the performance of ABS topology was proven to be superior to the existing ones. To decrease the amount of hardware required for implementing ABS system, we also proposed a new WDM channel sharing scheme. For (2, 3) ShuffleNet topology system, the number of wavelengths needed in the system can be reduced dramatically from 96 to 4 by using new scheme.

  • Optical Internet consists of IP domain and optical (WDM) domain, where the wavelength routing (WR) and optical burst switching (OBS) are the promising switching technologies in the optical domain. In this paper, we perform the simulations on the WR network and the OBS network, and compare their performances. It is verified from our simulations that the OBS network performs better than the WR network when the same network resources are given.

  • This paper considers a network restoration algorithm for all-optical WDM networks. As the increasing traffic and transmission speed, any failure on the networks will lead to loss of huge data and disruption of the services. Therefore, a network restoration algorithm is necessary for the high-speed all-optical networks. This paper suggests a distributed restoration algorithm for line or channel level failures under the dynamic rerouting. For the algorithm, some measures for performance evaluation are explicitly derived and simulation studies are exploited to evaluate its usability by SLAM(Simulation Language for Alternative Modeling) II.

  • Most of researchers have tried to find heuristic methods for near-optimal solutions of establishing light paths with minimum number of wavelengths in wavelengh-routed optical networks. In order to provide a performance measure for heuristic approaches, we propose a practical approach for a lower bound of the number of wavelengths which is required to provide full connections in WDM-based optical transport networks. This method is based on a path-flow formulation using K-shortest paths for each connection. Compared with a general link-flow formulation, the proposed method has much lower complexity and so needs much less calcuation tiem while it gives the same results as a general link-flow formulation in some sample networks.

  • In this paper, we deal with a new techno-economic modeling and analysis for optical access networks. In deploying the fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) architecture, network planner needs to consider the following techno-economic issues: when do we need to upgrade existing local access network to FTTH network? how much do we invest to maximize profit? In order to answer these techno-economic questions, we need to consider the impact of emerging technologies and business environment. Toward this end, we develop a new techno-economic modeling to deal with the inherent complexity of technology evolution and cost economics. In particular, the new modeling approach provides us with an techno-economic analysis of technology alternatives such as ethernet passive optical network (E-PON) and wavelength division multiplex passive optical network (WDM-PON). In this analysis, we focus on the impact of critical factors such as the cost characteristic of proposed architecture and digital subscriber line (DSL) subscriber's churn-in to FTTH service and churn-out. We develop mixed integer-programming models for finding the evolution path of local access networks to broadband network architectures.

  • Traffic grooming, in which low-rate circuits are multiplexed onto wavelengths, with the goal of minimizing the number of add-drop multiplexers (ADMs) and wavelengths has received much research attention from the optical networking community in recent years. While previous work has considered various traffic models and network architectures, protection requirements of the circuits have not been considered. In this paper, we consider survivable traffic grooming, or grooming traffic which contains a mix of circuits that need protection and that do not need protection. We assume a unidirectional ring network with all-to-all symmetric traffic with $t\geq1$ circuits between each node pair, of which s require protection. As it turns out, survivable traffic grooming presents a significant tradeoff between the number of wavelengths and the number of ADMs, which is almost non-existent in non-survivable traffic grooming for this type of traffic. We explore this tradeoff for some specific cases in this paper. We also present some new results and solution methods for solving certain non-survivable traffic grooming problems.

  • I propose the 5Gbps/1.25Gbps WDM/TDM hybrid Passive Optical Network(PON) with inverse RZ(Return to Zero) code coded downstream and NRZ(Non Return to Zero) upstream re-modulation and analyze its performance by performing simulation with MATLAB. The results have shown that an optical line termination (OLT) can be connected to 8, 16 optical network unit (ONU)s with the Bit Error Rate(BER) of $10^{-9}$ when the distance between OLT and ONU is 10Km and transmitted optical powers are more than -3.8, -0.9dBm, respectively. The proposed WDM/TDM hybrid PON system can solve the problem of data rate limit in upstream which happened in the conventional TDM PON because the upstream data rate is proportional to ONU and does not require a light source in ONU and its control circuits in OLT, thus can be a useful technology for asymmetric optical subscriber networks.

  • In this paper, we design the function of ULSLE(Upper Layer Shared LAN Emulation) to provide both the efficient LAN service and compatibility with 802.1D bridge in Hybrid two-stage AWG based WDM-PON. The ULSLE layer lies above MAC control layer in order to provide a mean to interface WDM-PON and 802.1D bridge. It also performs LAN emulation based on PON-Tag which is only used to decide both the transmission mode and the destination of frames transmitted from ONUs. That is, the PON-Tag is not used for downstream frames but destination address field in original frame instead. This decreases the processing overhead and complexity caused by PON-Tag at OLT and ONU. The verification of designed ULSLE is performed according to the specific scenarios based on transmission mode and destination using OPNET.
