  • Fe-Co-Ge 자기변형 합금 복합체는 낮은 자기장에서도 높은 자기 변형 민감도와 고분자 바인더에 의한 절연으로 인하여 저항이 크고, 와전류 손실이 작아 고주파영역 에서도 우수한 자기변형을 가지는 것으로 보고되고 있다. 그러나 희토류계 자기변형 복합체에 비하여 그 성능은 열세이지만, 제조 단가가 저렴하여 높은 성능/가격 대비 효과를 가지므로 초음파 발진소자와 같은 대량의 상업적 응용분야에 적용 가능한 소재로 있다. [1]. 한편 이와 같은 자기 변형 복합체는 고분자 바인더와 결합되어 있어 그 기계적 특성의 향상과 사용주파수 대역의 증가가 요구되어진다. 이에 이들 문제점을 보안하기 위하여 670 GPa의 큰 영률을 갖는 WC 분말의 첨가에 의한 합금복합체의 기계적 및 자기변형 (정적 및 동적) 특성에 미치는 영향에 관하여 연구하고자 하였다.

Effect of Laser Heat-treatment on WC-CoFe Coated Surface by HVOF (초고속화염용사 WC-CoFe 코팅층의 레이저 표면 열처리 효과)

  • The microstructure, hardness, and wear behaviors of a High Velocity Oxygen Fuel(HVOF) sprayed WC-CoFe coating are comparatively investigated before and after laser heat treatments of the coating surface. During the spraying, the binder metal is melted and a small portion of WC is decomposed to $W_2C$. A porous coating is formed by evolution of carbon oxide gases formed by the reaction of the free carbon and the sprayed oxygen gas. The laser heat treatment eliminates the porosity and provides a more densified microstructure. After laser heat treatment, the porosity in the coating layer decreases from 1.7 % to 1.2 and the coating thickness decreases from $150{\mu}m$ to $100{\mu}m$. The surface hardness increases from 1440 Hv to 1117 Hv. In the wear test, the friction coefficient of coating decreases from 0.45 to 0.32 and the wear resistance is improved by the laser heat treatment. The improvement is likely due to the formation of oxide tribofilms.

Abrasion and Impact Wear Resistance of the Fe­based Hardfacing Weld by Dispersing the Recycled WC

  • The abrasion and impact wear resistance were investigated on the hardfacing weld dispersed with the recycled hard metal(HM). The HM was composed of the tungsten carbide(WC) reinforced metal matrix composite. The cored wire filled with the 35 wt.% HM and 0­6 wt.% of the alloying element, Fe­75Mn­7C(FeMnC), was used for the gas metal arc(GMA) welding. The FeMnC addition to the 35 wt.% HM did not improve the abrasion wear property since the amount of the tungsten carbide formed was decreased with respect to the FeMnC amount. However, the 6 wt.% FeMnC addition to the 35 wt.% HM exhibited the better impact wear resistance than the hardfacing weld by the 40 wt.% HM.

  • Influences of Co and inhibitors from nano-sized WC materials were observed in the sintering process. VC and $Cr_3C_2$ were used as inhibitors. The crystal structure and surface images of sintered nano-sized WC materials, as functions of Co and inhibitors, were evaluated by XRD and FE-SEM analyses. The relative densities of sintered nano-sized WC materials did not change even with increased quantity of Co and increased temperature. The density of sintered nano-sized WC materials with inhibitors was lower than that of sintered nano-sized WC materials without inhibitors. No difference in hardness due to change of inhibitors was found.

  • Nanosized WC and WC-Co powders were synthesised by chemical vapor condensation(CVC) process using the pyrolysis of tungsten hexacarbonyl(W(CO)$_6$) and cobalt octacarbonyl(Co$_2$(CO)$_8$). The microstructural changes and phase evolution of the CVC powders during post heat-treatment were studied using the XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, and ICP-MS. CVC powders were consisted of the loosely agglomerated sub-stoichimetric WC$_{1-x}$ and the long-chain Co nanopowders. The sub-stochiometric CVC WC and WC-Co powders were carburized using the mixture gas of CH$_4$-H$_2$ in the temperature range of 730-85$0^{\circ}C$. Carbon content of CVC powder controlled by the gas phase carburization at 85$0^{\circ}C$ was well matched with the theoretical carbon sioichiometry of WC, 6.13 wt%. During the gas phase carburization, the particle size of WC increased from 20 nm to 40 nm and the long chain structure of Co powders disappeared.

The cored wire filled with the 25-35wt.% HM and 2-8wt.% of the alloying element, Fe-75Mn- 7C(FeMnC), was used for the gas metal arc(GMA) welding. By using the cored wire of the 25wt.% HM and FeMnC addition, the weld showed mostly constant wear loss for the abrasion as a function of the FeMnC content. This was due to the insufficient amount of the tungsten carbide formed during the GMA welding. The FeMnC addition to the 35wt.% HM did not improve the abrasion wear property since the amount of the tungsten carbide formed was decreased with respect to the FeMnC amount. The 6wt.% FeMnC addition to the 35wt.% HM exhibited the better impact wear resistance than the hardfacing weld by 40wt.% HM.

  • The protection of steel surfaces against wear is a practical problem far agricultural, mining and manufacturing industries. Commercial processes are available in which a hard tungsten carbides rich steel layer is formed on the surface of carbon steel digging, drilling and gouging tools to improve their wear resistance. The nature of the interaction of the tungsten carbide with the steel matrix is important in determining the wear and corrosion properties of the resulting metal matrix composites(MMC). In the study, WC-12%Co/low carbon steel MMC overlays have been prepared by gas metal arc welding(GMAW) according to size of WC-12%Co grits. The characteristics wear resistance and wear mechanism have been investigated in relation to the experiment conditions each other. After MMC overlay had been tested by rubber wheel abrasion test, it was known that MMC overlay has a excellent wear resistance. Fe$_{6}$W$_{6}$C carbides of matrix in overlays were not important to restrain rubber wheal abrasion wear. Wear loss is proportioned to a applied load according to time. On the case of low load, wear occurred severely in the matrix of overlay more than WC-12%Co grit, on the contrary it is reverse on the case of high load because of fracture of WC-12%Co grits.its.

Synthesis of Nano-sized Tungsten Carbide Powders by Vapor Phase Reaction of Tungsten Ethoxide (텅스텐 에톡사이드의 기상 반응을 이용한 초미립 WC 분말의 합성)

  • Nano-sized WC powders were synthesized by vapor phase reaction using the precusor of tungsten ethoxide under helium and hydrogen atmosphere. The phases of the powder were varied with reaction Bone and gas flow rate. The powder size was about 30nm in diameter, and the tungsten carbide powder was coated by carbon layer. The synthesis of nano-sized WC powders was promoted as the hydrogen gas flow rate became higher. Inversely, tungsten oxide was formed by increasing the flow rate of helium gas. The synthesized powders were analyzed by XRD, FE-SEM, carbon analyzer etc.

  • Iron-based metal matrix composites have been recently investigated for the use of inexpensive abrasion resistance material. This paper carried out to investigate the in-situ reaction effects on the microstructural characteristics and the formation mechanism of tungsten carbides in a white cast iron matrix. The specimens of Fe-3.2%C-2.8%Si alloy cast-bonded with tungsten wire were cast in the metal mold and isothermally heat treated at $950^{\circ}C$ up to 48 hours. The typical microstructure of heat treated specimens showed the reaction layer of WC at the interface of tungsten wire and the carbon depletion zone between the WC layer and the matrix. During the formation of WC layer, if the carbon supply is insufficient due to the decarburization of matrix or the isolation of matrix by cast-bonded W wires, the reaction layer develops coarse hexagonal crystalline WC. From the microstructural investigation, it was found that the volume of WC layer and the carbon depletion zone increased linearly with the isothermal heat treating time. This results supported that the formation rate of WC in the white cast iron matrix is controlled by the interfacial reaction with a constant reaction rate.

Fly Ash Application for Reduction of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) as Runoff and Leachate Released from Mine Waste Disposal Sites

  • Mine wastes such as acid mine drainage (AMD) can cause the detrimental effects on surrounding environment, thereby eventually threatening human health. Main objective of this study was to evaluate the neutralizing effect of fly ash (FA) as a stabilizing material AMD. Field plot was constructed in a coal waste depot which has caused aluminium-whitening adjacent to the stream. Different mixing ratios of FA were applied on a top of the soil, and then the physicochemical properties of runoff and soil were monitored. Constructed plots were as following: control (mine waste only (W)), mine waste + 20% ($w\;w^{-1}$)of FA (WC20M), mine waste + 40% ($w\;w^{-1}$)of FA (WC40M), and WC40M dressed with a fresh soil at the top (WC40MD). Result showed that initial pH of runoff in control was 5.09 while that in WC40M (7.81) was significantly increased. For a plot treated with WC40M, the concentration of Al in runoff was decreased to $0.22mg\;L^{-1}$ compared to the W as the control ($4.85mg\;L^{-1}$). Moreover, the concentration of Fe was also decreased to less than half at the WC40M compared to the control. Application of FA can be useful for neutralizing AMD and possibly minimizing adverse effect of AMD in mining area.
