  • WC cemented carbide are used as many die material to improve abration resistance. Mechanical properties of the cemented carbide were influenced by Co content and WC grain size. In this study, effects of Co content and WC grain size of WC cemented carbide on wear were examied. We prepared 13 cemented carbides with different Co content and WC grain size. Wear test was carried out against S45C under dry condition at 98N and 232mm/s. From the results, we found that wear increased with both Co content and WC grain size. Specific wear rate was range $10^{-7}mm^3/Nm$.

  • The linear intercept (LI) method was used to quantitatively measure the intercepts of WC grains in nano-grained WC-10Co hardmetal. When the surveyed intercept numbers of WC grain exceeded 200, the statistic data for the mean grain size of WC were reproduced. The discriminative minimal grain size of used LI method was 12 nm; the maximum intercept of WC grain was 109 nm; the average intercept of WC grains was 45 nm and the corresponding 3D mean grain size of WC was 70 nm which is agreeable with the XRD outcome.

  • The plastic deformation behavior of cemented carbides is related to the WC grain boundary strength. Ab initio calculations predict that Co and Mn segregate to WC/WC grain boundaries. To experimentally study the effect of Mn, a WC-Co-Mn material was manufactured and compared to a WC-Co material. The microstructure was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), including electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Special attention was paid to the WC grain size and the frequency of special low-energy grain boundaries. Mn was found to have negligible effect on both the WC grain growth and the fraction of $\sum2$ WC/WC boundaries in the as-sintered material.

  • The effect of variation in particle size of WC and Co powder on the properties of WC-Co alloys was investigated. WC and Co powders having different particle sizes were used in the fabrication of $WC-10\;wt\%$Co composites. High hardness and low fracture toughness alloy was obtained with the decrease in WC particle size regardless of Co particle size. It was newly found in this investigation that the initial particle size of Co as well as WC had a great role in the microstructure and properties of WC-Co hard materials. The average grain size and fracture toughness of WC-Co alloys using same WC powder size increased and their hardness decreased with the use of relatively finer Co binder.

  • Growth behavior of two different types of grains, faceted and rounded, in a liquid matrix has been studied in the (75WC-25TiCN)-30Co system. Powder samples were sintered above the eutectic temperature for various times under a carbon saturated condition. (Ti,W)(C,N) grains with a rounded shape and WC grains with a faceted shape coexisted in the same Co based liquid. With increasing sintering time, the average size of (Ti.W)(C,N) grains increased continuously and very large WC grains appeared. The growth of rounded (Ti,W)(C,N) grains followed a cubic law, r^3-r^3_0$=kt, where r is the average size of the grains, $r_0$ the initial average size, k the proportionality constant and t the sintering time. indicating a diffusion-controlled growth. On the other hand, the growth of the faceted WC grains resulted in a bimodal grain size distribution, showing an abnormal grain growth. These observations show that the growth behavior of different types of grains is governed by their shape, faceted or rounded, even in the same liquid matrix.

  • In this study, binderless-WC, WC-6 wt%Co, WC-6wt% 1 and 2.5 B4C materials are fabricated by spark plasma sintering process (SPS process). Each fabricated WC material is almost completely dense, with a relative density up to 99.5 % after the simultaneous application of pressure of 60 MPa. The WC added Co and Co-B4C materials resulted in crystalline growth. The WC with HCP crystal structure has respective interfacial energy (basal facet direction: 1.07 ~ 1.34 J·m-2, prismatic direction: 1.43 ~ 3.02 J·m-2) that depends on the grain growth direction. It is confirmed that the continuous grain growth, biased by the basal facet, which has relatively low energy, is promoted at the WC/Co interface. As abnormal grain growth takes place, the grain size increases more than twice from 0.37 to 0.8 um. It is found through analysis that the hardness property also greatly decreases from about 2661.4 to 1721.4 kg/mm2, along with the grain growth.

  • The effect of Co additive on the microstructural evolusion of WC was investigated. A small amount of Co powder was placed on the top-center of the pure WC powder compact and then sintered at 1950$^{\circ}C$. During sintering some abnormally large WC grains of different size and shape observed depending on the distance from the liquid source. However, in the region far away from Co liquid source, it showed low densification and the grains of WC were very small and uniform in size. A small amount of Co liquid phase has a remarkable influence on the AGG of WC and it has been explained in terms of 2-D nucleation and growth mechanism.

  • The prediction of mechanical properties for WC-Co alloys by evaluation of coercive force and magnetic saturation were studied in relation to their microstructure. The WC-8%Co alloys were prepared using different WC particle size, carbon content and various sintering temperature by PM process. The magnetic properties such as coercive force and magnetic saturation of sintered WC-Co alloys were critically dependent upon their final composition and microstructure. Slight changes of carbon contents and small variation of WC grain size result in marked changes of magnetic properties, hardness and transverse rupture strength of sintered WC-Co alloys. It was found that the coercive force and hardness were increased by fine WC grain size of sinterd alloys, and the coercive force was proportional to hardness. With decreasing total carbon content below the stoichiometric value in WC-8%Co alloys the volume fraction of $\eta$ phase increased steadily, while the magnetic saturation and transverse rupture strength decreased. The magnetic saturation was inversely proportional to the coercive force of WC-Co alloys.

  • Friction and wear of pressureless sintered Ti(C,N)-WC ceramics were studied using a ball-on-reciprocating flat apparatus in open air. The silicon nitride ball and the cemented carbide (WC-Co) ball were used against the Ti(C,N)-WC plate samples. The friction coefficients of the Ti(C,N)-WC samples against the silicon nitride ball and the cemented carbide ball were about 0.57 and 0.3, respectively. The wear coefficient of the sample without WC addition was 5 times as large as that of the sample with 10 mole % WC addition when tested against the silicon nitride ball under 98 N. The higher wear coefficient of Ti(C,N)-0WC was explained in part by larger grain size. Wear occurred mainly by grain dislodgment after intergranular cracking mainly caused by the accumulated stress within the grains.

  • A radically new approach to the in situ synthesis of the consituent phases of a composite structure has enabled the production of a new WC/Co materials with an ultrafine microstructure. The process for synthesizing nanophase WC/Co powders consists of spray drying from solution to form a homogeneous precursor powder, and thermochemical conversion of the precursor powder to the nanophase WC/Co powder. Near theoretical density of pure nanophase WC-10 wt%Co has been obtained in only 30 sec at 140$0^{\circ}C$. But WC particles were grown up very rapidly with longer sintering time to get full density. To overcome coarsening of WC particle during sintering, VC, TaC and VC/TaC were used as the grain growth inhibitor with different amount respectively. VC/TaC doped WC-10 wt%Co was shown superior hardness and TRS and microstructure was maintained ultrafine scale (average WC size is less than 0.1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$).
