  • Pervasive Multi-channel audio systems are being realized due to advances in digital technology. This paper proposes an efficient system that serially connects individual speakers with bidirectional digital communication capability by means of SoC design. In particular, each speaker can identify the bit stream assigned to the speaker and convert it into analog audio. Furthermore, the speaker can self-diagnose the speaker functionality by utilizing the designed capability to measure frequencies of various square wave test signals. The proposed system running on 200MHz clock yielded restoration of analog output signal with latency of only $500{\mu}s$ compared to directly driving the speakers in a traditional way.

  • In this study, possibility of the laser eavesdropping is investigated on the window glasses with various thicknesses, Glass windows are excited by maximum length sequency (MLS) signal and the vibration sound is detected by a laser doppler vibrometer. From the detected sound, speech intelligibility is objectively estimated. Speech transmission index (STI), which is based on the modulation transfer function (MTF). is calculated for the estimation. Finally, disturbing wave effect on the speech intelligibility is analysed by using an outside speaker and a window shaker attached on the glass window. The purpose of the study is to estimate the possibility of remote eavesdropping by the laser sensor and to evaluate the performance of the homemade window shaker to protect from the remote eavesdropping.

  • This study presents the design of a Wilkinson power divider for three-way output ports (WPD3OP), which incorporates a defected ground structure (DGS). An asymmetric power divider is integrated into the output ports of the conventional Wilkinson power divider (WPD), establishing a three-way output port configuration. The DGS introduces periodic or irregular patterns into the ground plane to suppress unwanted electromagnetic wave propagation, and its incorporation can enhance the performance of the power divider, in terms of the power-division ratio, isolation, and bandwidth, by reducing spurious resonances. The proposed design algorithm for an asymmetric power divider for three-way output ports is analyzed via circuit simulations using High-Frequency Simulation Software (HFSS). The results verify the validity of the proposed method. The analysis of the WPD3OP integrated with DGS certifies the achievement of a center frequency of 2 GHz. This confirmation is supported by schematic ideal design simulation results and measurements encompassing insertion losses, return losses, and isolation.

  • We propose a 10-GHz 2 × 2 phased-array radio frequency (RF) receiver with an 8-bit linear phase and 15-dB gain control range using 65-nm complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology. An 8 × 8 phased-array receiver module is implemented using 16 2 × 2 RF phased-array integrated circuits. The receiver chip has four single-to-differential low-noise amplifier and gain-controlled phase-shifter (GCPS) channels, four channel combiners, and a 50-Ω driver. Using a novel complementary bias technique in a phase-shifting core circuit and an equivalent resistance-controlled resistor-inductor-capacitor load, the GCPS based on vector-sum structure increases the phase resolution with weighting-factor controllability, enabling the vector-sum phase-shifting circuit to require a low current and small area due to its small 1.2-V supply. The 2 × 2 phased-array RF receiver chip has a power gain of 21 dB per channel and a 5.7-dB maximum single-channel noise-figure gain. The chip shows 8-bit phase states with a 2.39° root mean-square (RMS) phase error and a 0.4-dB RMS gain error with a 15-dB gain control range for a 2.5° RMS phase error over the 10 to10.5-GHz band.

  • In this study, a planar printed circuit board (PCB) coil with FR4 substrate was designed and simulated using the finite element method, and the results were analyzed in the frequency domain. This coil can be used in wireless power transfer (WPT) as a transmitter or receiver, eliminating wires. It can also be used as the receiver in radio frequency energy-harvesting (RF-EH) systems by optimizing the planar PCB coil to convert radio-wave energy into electricity, and it can be employed as an excitation (transmitter) or receiver coil in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. This PCB coil can replace the conventional coil, yielding a reduced occupied volume, a fine-tuned design, reduced weight, and increased efficiency. Based on the calculated gain, power, and electromagnetic and electric field results, this planar PCB coil can be implemented in WPT, NMR spectroscopy, and RF-EH devices with minor changes. In applications such as NMR spectroscopy, it can be used as a transceiver planar PCB coil. In this design, at frequencies of 915 MHz and 40 MHz with 5 mm between coils, we received powers of 287.3 μW and 480 μW, respectively, which are suitable for an NMR coil or RF-EH system.

  • Earthquake Hazard Mitigation Law was activated into force on March 2009. By the law, the obligation to monitor the effect of earthquake on the facilities was extended to many organizations such as gas company and local governments. Based on the estimation of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the number of free-surface acceleration stations would be expanded to more than 400. The advent of internet protocol and the more simplified operation have allowed the quick and easy installation of seismic stations. In addition, the dynamic range of seismic instruments has been continuously improved enough to evaluate damage intensity and to alert alarm directly for earthquake hazard mitigation. For direct visualization of damage intensity and area, Real Time Intensity COlor Mapping (RTICOM) is explained in detail. RTICOM would be used to retrieve the essential information for damage evaluation, Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA). Destructive earthquake damage is usually due to surface waves which just follow S wave. The peak amplitude of surface wave would be pre-estimated from the amplitude and frequency content of first arrival P wave. Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) system is conventionally defined to estimate local magnitude from P wave. The status of EEW is reviewed and the application of EEW to Odesan earthquake is exampled with ShakeMap in order to make clear its appearance. In the sense of rapidity, the earthquake announcement of Korea Meteorological Agency (KMA) might be dramatically improved by the adaption of EEW. In order to realize hazard mitigation, EEW should be applied to the local crucial facilities such as nuclear power plants and fragile semi-conduct plant. The distributed EEW is introduced with the application example of Uljin earthquake. Not only Nation-wide but also locally distributed EEW applications, all relevant information is needed to be shared in real time. The plan of extension of Korea Integrated Seismic System (KISS) is briefly explained in order to future cooperation of data sharing and utilization.

  • As wireless communication devices become more common, interests in how to control the electromagnetic waves generated from the devices are increasing. One of the most commonly used electromagnetic wave control materials is magnetic one, but due to the features that make the product heavy and thick when applied to the product, it is difficult to use them in curved electronic devices. Therefore, a polymer flexible meta electronic device has been presented to sort out the problem, which is thin and can have various curvatures. However, it requires an additional evaluation of curvature reliability. In this study, we developed a method to predict electromagnetic wave control characteristics through the resistance/length of the conductive ink line patterns of polymer flexible meta electronic devices, which is inversely proportional to the electromagnetic wave control characteristics. As the radius of curvature decreased, the resistance/length increased, and there was little variations with the duration times of curvature. We also found that both permanent and recoverable changes along with the removal of curvature were occurred when the curvature was applied, and that the cause of these changes was newly created vertical cracks in the conductive ink line pattern due to the tensile stress applied by applying curvature.

  • A radio communication system has interference caused by other radio transmitters operated in co-channel or adjacent channels. Therefore technical specifications are made by considering and investigating the effects of interference between the new system and present systems when the new system will be started to serve in the near future. FTS is used for preventing an abnormal mission and guaranteeing public protection. Recently the next generation FTS's are researched to reinforce the security and to increase the operating capability of simultaneous use. EFTS known as one of the next generation FTS's is suitable for such purposes. In this paper the effects of interference signals on the performance of EFTS are investigated. Noncoherent DPSK and noncoherent CPFSK are considered for the modulation method of EFTS and a FMCW and a pulse RADAR considered as a interferer. The power of FMCW is 20.3dB lower than the power of EFTS and the power of pulse RADAR is 19.1dB lower than that of EFTS. Simulation results show that FMCW interferer reduce $E_b/N_o$ of about 1dB and $E_b/N_o$ of EFTS deteriorates about 0.5dB due to interference signals generated from pulse RADAR.

  • This paper suggests a test and evaluation procedure of conformal load-bearing antenna structure(CLAS) for high speed military jet application. A log periodic patch type antenna was designed for multi-band communication and navigation antenna. Carbon/Glass fiber reinforced polymer was used as a structure supporting aerodynamic loads and honeycomb layer was used to improve antenna performance. Multi-layers were stacked and cured in a hot temperature oven. Gain, VSWR and polarization pattern of CLAS were measured using anechoic chamber within 0.15~2.0 GHz frequency range. Tension, shear, fatigue and impact load test were performed to evaluate structural strength of CLAS. Antenna performance test after every structural strength test was conducted to check the effect of structural test to antenna performance. After the application of new test and evaluation procedure to validate a new CLAS, a design improvement was found.
