  • Water affects the mechanical properties of coal and stress wave propagation. To comprehensively investigate the effect of water content on the properties of coal, laboratory tests including X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis, P-wave test, S-wave test, static and dynamic compression test with different water contents were conducted. The compressive strength, elastic modulus and failure strain and their mechanism of coal specimen under coupled static-dynamic load with the increased water content were observed. Meanwhile, energy transmission and dissipation characteristics of a stress wave in coal specimens with different water contents under dynamic load and its relation with the failure features, such as fragmentation and fractal dimension, of coal was analyzed. Furthermore, the dynamic interpretation of water infusion to prevent coal burst based on water infusion model of coal seam roadway was provided.

  • A new and relatively simple equation for the soil water content-pressure head curve, ${\theta}$(h) is described in this paper. The particular form of the equation enables one to derive closed-form analytical expressions for the relative hydraulic conductivity, Kr, when substituted in the predictive conductivity models of Y. Mualem. Hopmans' equation is presented as an experimental method. The experienced method, $ET_a=K_sK_cET_o$ is introduced to estimate the actual evapotranspiration, $ET_a$(or $ET_c$). Using $ET_c$ and coil water data measured automatically in a weighing lusimeter, $K_s$ and $K_c$ values are estimated. Recently, FAO has introduced calculation procedures for the soil water(stress) coefficient, Ks in "Guidelines for computing crop water requirements".

  • Germination and seedling emergence of 40 barley cultivars and lines having been bred in Korea were studied under different water and salt stress conditions containing different sucrose and KC1 concentration in laboratory at Suweon. This study revealed that the barley cultivars and lines differed markedly in their emergence rate index(ERI), total stand(TS), coleoptile length, seedling height, top and root weight. Those characters of the most cultivars were progressively reduced as water and salt stress increased. Jogangbori, Dongbori 1, SB 77460 and SB 77415 were less sensitive to both stress and will be useful for breeding sources. ERI was highly correlated with TS, coleoptile length and seedling height. ERI and TS between two different solutions were correlated each other, and this study indicated that for screening the varieties or lines tolerant to water and salt stress, both ways were available and should be screened genetic materials with a good germination and emergence rate in I stress conditions.

  • Monthly wind stress, wind stress curl and volume transport stream functions are computed in the Eastern Sea(Japan Sea) based upon observed wind and atmospheric pressure data respectively. The presented two results show different distributios on locality and season but as common features the results reveal the northwesterly surface wind stress \ulcorner 새 the monsoon in winter, south to southwesterly wind stress \ulcorner 새 the southerly wind in summer and strond anticyclonic curl in the northern part on the Eastern Sea(Japan Sea) in winter. In the distributions obtained from the sea level atmospheric pressure data, the maximum value of the wind stress and of curls of small scales are shown off the southeast coast of Siberia and northeast coast of Korea. Volume transport distributions obtained from the Sverdrup relationship suggest that the strong northward boundary current can be formed along the northeast coast of Korea in winter and weak southward boundary current in summer.

  • Water deficit stress during early soybean[Glycine max (L.) Merrill] growth stage is the most important environmental factor limiting productivity. Eight soybean genotypes were grown in replicated pot under well-watered(control: near 0 bar) and drought(-5 and -10 bars) conditions. Soybean plants were subject to drought stress for 20 days at 10 days after seed emergence. Significant genotypic variation was observed for leaf area(LA) and total dry weight (TDW). At the end of water stress, LA and TDW of Hwanggeumkong and Paldalkong, which had large LA in the non-stressed control, were more sensitive to water stress than those of the other cultivars, while those of Suwon 93 with small LA were insensitive. Leaf proline and abscisic acid(ABA) contents increased after water stress. However, changes in proline and ABA contents were not consistently related to the changes in LA as affected by water stress. As the soil water potential decreased, the yield reduction of Hodgson 78 showing large decrease in LA and TDW in response to water deficit was severe when compared to that of Baegunkong with small decrease in LA and TDW. Relatively greater yield stability and higher average yield across soil water potential were observed in Baegunkong. Of specific interest was the small reduction in yield of Paldalkong in spite of its significant decrease in LA and TDW.

  • Plasticity is the ability of clay to respond to pressure with a continuous and permanent change of shape in any direction without breaking apart, and hold that shape when released. In this work, the effect of water content and aging period on the plasticity of porcelain clay was evaluated using the capillary rheometer to measure the flow rate and the shear stress. The shear stress of porcelain clay was slightly increased with increasing the aging period, indicating that the plasticity of porcelain clay was influenced by an organic content. It was also observed that the water content in the porcelain clay had a great influence on the plasticity of porcelain clay. The shear stress with water content of 21 wt% was sharply increased with increasing shear rate, but the shear stresses with water contents of 24 and 27 wt% is gently incremented.

  • The sudden drop of water temperature in winter is very threatening factor that affects the productivity of farmed fish and the management in aquafarm. In this study, we investigated the effect of low temperature on the survival, oxygen consumption and stress responses of parrotfish Oplegnathus fasciatus due to acute drop of water temperature. The survival rate of parrotfish Oplegnathus fasciatus was 5% at 6℃, 95% at 8℃ and 100% at 10℃ on the 4th day of exposure in each experimental temperature. Low-lethal temperature for 4days of parrotfish Oplegnathus fasciatus (4 day-LT50) was 6.99℃ (confidence limit, 6.55-7.42℃). Oxygen consumption rate was significantly decreased with decreasing water temperature. Temperature coefficient (Q10) was found to be 4.0 between 10℃ and 8℃ and 0.39 between 8℃ and 6℃. As a result of investigating the stress response according to the drop in water temperature, the concentration of SOD (Superoxide dismutase), cortisol, glucose, total Ig, AST (Aspartate) and ALT (Alanine aminotransferase) increased with decreasing of water temperature. This study would be useful for the management of temperature about cultured fish.

  • This paper presents the numerical study to examine characteristics of fluid flow and solute transport in a rough fracture subject to effective normal stresses. The aperture distribution is generated by using the self-affine fractal model. In order to represent a nonlinear relationship between the supported normal stress and the fracture aperture, we combine a simple mechanical model with the local flow model. The solute transport is simulated using the random walk particle following algorithm. Results of numerical simulations show that the flow is significantly affected by the geometry of aperture distribution varying with the effective normal stress level while it is slightly affected by the fractal dimension that determines the degree of the fracture surface roughness. However, solute transport is influenced by the effective normal stress as well as the fracture surface roughness.

  • Earth and rock fill dam is our typical dam because of their inherent flexibility and adaptability to various fundation conditions. In order to secure structural safety, rockfill materials are used angular particles obtained by blasting parent rock or rounded particles collected from river beds. Concrete-faces rockfill dams(CFRD) and Concrete-faces gravelfill dams(CFGD) have become popular in the last 20 years as s result of their good performance and low cost compared with the rockfill dam. These Dams are also constructed by the materials. A key factor in the design of the dams is the deformations induced during construction and upon reservoir filling. These can be predicted using the stress-strain and strength properties can be adequately define. However the stress-strain properties of rockfill are difficult to determine because the properties are affected by such factors as particle grading, size and shape of particles, stress conditions, and particle crushing. In our study, testing of the behavior of the rockfill materials are essential prerequisites to the realistic analysis and design of the CFGD. This paper deals with laboratory testing of particle crushing among the study.

  • The aim of this study was to develop a new in-situ observation method and instrument in micro-scale to investigate the mechanism of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) initiation of Ni-base alloys in a high temperature water environment of pressurized water reactors (PWRs). A laser confocal microscope (LCM), an autoclave with diamond window view port, and a slow strain-rate tester with primary water circulation loop system were components of the instrument. Diamond window, one of the core components of the instrument, was selected based on its optical, chemical, and mechanical properties. LCM was used to observe the specimen in micro-scale, considering the experimental condition of a high-temperature primary water environment. Using in-situ method and instrument, it is possible to observe oxidation and deformation of specimen surface in micro-scale through the diamond window in a high-temperature primary water in real-time. The in-situ method and instrument developed in this work can be utilized to investigate effects of various factors on SCC initiation in a high-temperature water environment.
