  • The design modification of problematic component in a given vibration path is disallowed in order to sacrifice other performances such as ride comport or handling of a vehicle. For this, the paper presents a new contribution analysis based on transmissibility ratio (TR) of acceleration in a definite vibration path to find a proper candidate for design modification. The new contribution analysis is based on the fact that the sensitivity of TR over a small design change is inversely proportional to the magnitude of TR. The new methodology can significantly relieve efforts of time-consumming modal analysis for detail modal information. The theory of proposed contribution analysis is simulated with five-degree-of-freedom open vibration path and confirms that the contribution result is well matched with the variance of TR over a dynamic change on a vibration path.

  • The performance of a commonly used, inclined shaft, axial flow pump manufactured in Vietnam was evaluated . The pump tested had a 37 cm diameter thrust impeller and 40 cm outlet diameter. This pump was initially evaluated to establish the base performance curves for three total static heads of 1.45 m, 1.75m and 2.15 m at a constant recommended speed of 980 rpm. In the field survey, brass sleeve , impeller and lubricating system. These parts of the pump were modified and then it was tested again at the same test conditions used for the original one. Maximum efficiency of the original pump varied from 56.11% to 53.15% , and that of the modified pump from 57.63% to 54.52% when the total static head varied from 1.45 m to 2.15m . At these total static heads, the discharge, the total head and the power input varied from 387 to 347l/s, 4.25 to 4.60m and 28.72 to 29.38kW, respectively, for the original pump and from 388 to 346l/s , 4.29 to 4.63 m and 28.23 to 28.91 kw, respectivel , for the modified pump. The efficiency of the pump after modification increased by more than 1.5% and the power input decreased by 1.7%.

  • Transparent materials are widely used in the fields of optic parts and bio industry. We have experiment to find out the characteristics of the micromachining inside transparent materials using femtosecond laser pulses. With its non-linear effects by very high peak intensity, filament (plasma channel) was formed by the cause of the self-focusing and the self-defocusing. Physical damage could be found when the intensity is high enough to give rise to the thermal stress or evaporation. At the vicinity of the power which makes the visible damage or modification, the structural modification occurs with the slow scanning speed. According to the polarization direction to the scanning direction, the filament quality is quite different. There is a good quality when the polarization direction is parallel to the scanning direction. For fine filament, we could suggest the conditions of the high numerical aperture lens, the short shift of focusing point, the low scanning speed and the low power below 20 mW. As the examples of optics parts, we fabricated the fresnel zone plate with the $225{\mu}m$ diameter and Y-bend optical wave guide with the $5{\mu}m$ width.

  • Surface treatment using UV irradiation was carried out to improve optical properties of polarizing films. The effects of UV energy of the UV-treated PVA films were investigated by measuring reflectance, surface roughness, contact angles, ESCA, and ATR. Reflectance decreased at wavelength of 450 nm or less and surface roughness increased with increasing UV energy. Water contact angle increased in the irradiated PVA films and surface energy decreased with increase in w energy. An analysis showed that the OH groups were broken and some new groups were introduced such as C=C and C=O bonds together with increased $O_{1s}/C_{1s}$, resulting in the observed surface modification effect. Surface modified PVA polarizing films showed improvement in light transmittance of polarizing films at high wavelength region without deteriorating polarization efficiency, which was not affected by UV irradiation sequence during manufacturing processes such as coloring and drawing.

  • Phenyltrimethoxysilane (PTMS) was anchored onto the sensitized $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. This insulating molecular layer effectively inhibited the charge recombination at the interface of $TiO_2$/electrolyte in the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) without sacrificing the dye-loading capacity of the nanocrystalline $TiO_2$. DSCs using PTMS-modified $TiO_2$ exhibited a short-circuit current ($J_{SC}$) of $15.9mA/cm^2$, an open-circuit voltage ($V_{OC}$) of 789 mV, and a fill factor (FF) of 68.2%, yielding an overall conversion efficiency (${\eta}$) of 8.55% under $100mW/cm^2$ illumination. The resulting cell efficiency was improved by ~10% as compared with the reference cell.

  • Obesity is a global pandemic that is increasing throughout most of the world. Increases in obesity are not restricted to highly industrialized countries, but have been observed in newly developed and developing countries as well. Obesity is associated with increased risk for non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease, and some types of cancer. Tragically, eliminating food shortages in developing countries may result in substituting heart disease, diabetes, and cancer for malnutrition. There are many approaches to reducing obesity, including dietary modification, surgical interventions, and drug therapies. However, only dietary modification has the potential to be effective on a global scale. Public health measures in the United States have sought to reduce obesity by reducing the intake of dietary fat. While these efforts have succeeded in reducing dietary fat, obesity has continued to increase, suggesting that moderate fat reduction may not be effective. Other proposed diets include low-carbohydrate diets, low glycemic index diets, and very low fat diets. While all of these diets may be effective for some people, they are not satisfactory for public health policy. In fact, the ratio of fat to carbohydrate may not be as important as previously believed. Humans may be well suited to adapt to diets as varied as a high carbohydrate tropical diet consisting mostly of fruits to the high fat Eskimo diet consisting largely of animal foods. Either extreme may be healthful if providing adequate, but not excessive, energy and adequate amounts of micronutrients. Public health measures may need to focuss on reducing the overconsumption of inexpensive and convenient foods.

  • Seungchon Weir was constructed in 2010 on the downstream region of Yeongsan River watershed for four major river projects. The purpose of our study was to determine whether fish compositions and distributions differ between the upper ($U_w$) and lower regions ($L_w$) of Seungchon Weir during May - December 2011 along with hydroacoustic fish surveys using Eco-Sounder monitoring ($E_SM$) technique. Total number of fish species sampled by conventional fish sampling at all sites was 29, and 21 and 24 species occurred in the $U_w$ and $L_w$, respectively. Most dominant species was Hemiculter eigenmanni (43%) in the $U_w$ and Opsaiichthys uncirostris amurensis (21%) in the $L_w$, indicating a distinct differences of the species composition. According to hydroacoustic approach of ESM, fish density was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the $L_w$ section of 250 m than any other sections, This outcome indicates that fishes moving toward the upstream were blocked by weir construction. According to analysis of tolerance guilds, tolerant species (TS) were made of 88% and 79% in the $U_w$ and $L_w$ region, respectively, while the proportions of sensitive species were < 0.1% of the total in the both regions. Trophic guild analysis showed that the proportion of omnivore species were 58% and 40% in the $U_w$ and $L_w$ region, respectively, while insectivores were made of 16% and 21% in the $U_w$ and $L_w$ region, respectively. Both analyses of tolerance guilds and trophic guilds indicate the biological degradation of the waterbody. Fish community structure analysis, based on species diversity, dominance, and evenness indices, showed higher community stability in the $L_w$ region than $U_w$ region. Exotic species of largemouth bass were largely increased in this survey (14%), compared to the past (< 1%), indicating a modification of fish trophic structure.

  • Vertically-aligned carbon nanotubes (VCNT) have attracted much attention due to their unique structural, mechanical and electronic properties, and possess many advantages for a wide range of multifunctional applications such as field emission displays, heat dissipation and potential energy conversion devices. Surface modification of the VCNT plays a fundamental role to meet specific demands for the applications and control their surface property. Recent studies have been focused on the improvement of the electron emission property and the structural modification of CNTs to enable the mass fabrication, since the VCNT considered as an ideal candidate for various field emission applications such as lamps and flat panel display devices, X-ray tubes, vacuum gauges, and microwave amplifiers. Here, we investigate the effect of surface morphology of the VCNT by water vapor exposure and coating materials on field emission property. VCNT with various height were prepared by thermal chemical vapor deposition: short-length around $200{\mu}m$, medium-length around $500{\mu}m$, and long-length around 1 mm. The surface morphology is modified by water vapor exposure by adjusting exposure time and temperature with ranges from 2 to 10 min and from 60 to 120oC, respectively. Thin films of SiO2 and W are coated on the structure-modified VCNT to confirm the effect of coated materials on field emission properties. As a result, the surface morphology of VCNT dramatically changes with increasing temperature and exposure time. Especially, the shorter VCNT change their surface morphology most rapidly. The difference of field emission property depending on the coating materials is discussed from the point of work function and field concentration factor based on Fowler-Nordheim tunneling.

  • Surface modification of recycled plastic film-based aggregates is demonstrated to enhance the interaction between aggregates and cement paste. It is shown that the oxygen(O2) atmospheric pressure plasma(APP) treatment leads to a drastic increase in hydrophilicity. In case of the plasma treatment at 100W of RF power, 15/4sccm of O2/Ar flow rate and 30sec of discharging time, the water contact angle on the aggregates surface decreased from 104.5° to 44.0°. In addition, the contact angle of surface modified aggregates kept in air increased with time elapse. Improvement of hydrophilicity can be explained by the formation of new hydrophilic oxygen functional groups which is identified as C-OH, C-O-C, C=O, -COOH by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) analysis and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR). Therefore, it can be concluded that the plasma treatment process is an effective method to improve adhesion of the recycled plastic film-based aggregates and cement paste.

  • Zinc plated steel tire cords were subjected to RF plasma etching of argon, followed by plasma polymerization coating of acetylene or butadiene in order to enhance adhesion to rubber compounds. Plasma polymerization was carried out under optimized conditions of 10 W, 30 sec, 30 mTorr for acetylene and butadiene gas, while plasma etching was performed at 90W, 10min and 30mTorr. The adhesion of tire cords was evaluated via Tire Cords Adhesion Test (TCAT) and the failure surfaces of the tested samples were analyzed by SEM. Polymer coating by plasma polymerization was also characterized by FT-IR, Alpha-Step and dynamic contact angle analyzer in order to elucidate the adhesion mechanism.
