In this study, direct numerical and large eddy simulations of transitional flows around studs were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of turbulence stimulators at very low speeds for the minimum propulsion power condition of four knots. For simplicity, the studs were assumed to be installed on a flat plate, while the wake was observed up to 0.23 m downstream behind the second stud. For applicability to a model ship, we also studied the flow characteristics behind the first and second studs installed on a curved plate, which was designed to describe the geometry of a bulbous bow. A laminar-to-turbulent transition was observed in the wake at ReD ≥ 921 (U∞≥0.290 m/s), and the wall shear stress at ReD = 1162 (U∞ = 0.366 m/s) in the second wake was similar to that of the fully developed turbulent boundary layer after a laminar-to-turbulent transition in the first wake. At ReD = 581 (U∞ = 0.183 m/s), no turbulence was stimulated in the wake behind the first and second studs on the flat plate, while a cluster of vortical structures was observed in the first wake over the curved plate. However, a cluster of vortical structures was revealed to be generated by the reattachment process of the separated shear layer, which was disturbed by the first stud rather than directly initiated by the first stud. It was quite different from a typical process of transition, which was observed at relatively high ReD that the spanwise scope of the turbulent vortical structures expanded gradually as it went downstream.

Only horizontal seismic waves are often applied as designed load to a rectangular rigid frame because the influence of vertical seismic waves is considered small so as to be able to ignore it. But, as for the seismic responses of shell and spatial structures, the responses in the vortical direction is significantly amplified and the vertical responses are amplified even if they are subjected to the horizontal seismic wave only. And also, the horizontal and vertical seismic responses of shell and spatial structures are amplified by vortical seismic waves. An arch has been often used as the main structure component of the large spatial structures and is the mostly simple structure with the seismic response characteristics of the spatial structures. In this paper, for arches as a simple example of the shell and spatial structures, the dynamic characteristics, when the structures are subjected to the horizontal and vertical seismic wave at the same time, are studied, and the horizontal and vertical static seismic force, which have simple forms but hold the response characteristics of arches, are proposed.
The characteristics of turbulent flow and mixing in a small can type combustor are investigated by means of Large Eddy Simulation (LES). Attention is paid for a combustor having a baffle plate with oxidant injection and fuel injection holes and study is made for three cases of different baffle plate configurations. From the result, it is confirmed that mixing is promoted by interaction between the jets during their developing process and large vortical flows generated in the vicinity of the combustor wall or fuel jet front. This particular flow feature is effective to accelerate the slow mixing between fuel and oxidant suffering from low Reynolds number condition in such a small combustor. In particular, the vortical flow region ahead of fuel jet plays an important role for rapid mixing. Discussion is made for the time and space averaged turbulent flow and scalar quantities which show peculiar characteristics corresponding to different vortical flow structures for each baffle plate shapes.
The complex, unsteady, self-sustained pressure oscillations induced by supersonic flow past a rectangular cavity is investigated using numerical simulations. The present numerical study is performed using a parallel, multiblock solver for the two-dimensional, compressible NavierStokes equations. Open cavities with length-to-depth (L / D) ratio in the range 0.5 - 3.3 are considered. This paper sheds light on the cavity physics, cavity oscillatory mechanism, and the organisation of vortical structures inside the cavity. The vortex shedding phenomenon, the shear layer impingement event at the aft wall and the movement of the acoustic/compression wave within the cavity are well predicted. The vortical structures· and the source of the acoustic disturbances are found to be located near the aft wall of the cavity. With the increase in the cavity length, strong recompression of the flow near the aft wall leading to a sudden jump in the cavity form drag is observed. The estimated cavity tones are in good agreement with the available semiempirical relation. Multiple peaks are noticed in deep and long cavities. For the present freestream Mach number 1.71, it is observed that around L/D=2.0, the cavity oscillatory mechanism changes from the transverse to longitudinal oscillatory mode. The effects of this transition on various fluid dynamics and acoustic properties are also discussed.
Numerical simulations are conducted for laminar flow past a sphere rotating In the transverse direction, in order to investigate the effect of the rotation on the characteristics of flow over a sphere. The Reynolds numbers considered are Re=100, 250 and 300 based on the free-stream velocity and the sphere diameter, and the rotational speeds are in the range of $0{\leq}{\omega}{\leq}1$, where ${\omega}^{\ast}$ is the maximum velocity on the sphere surface normalized by the free-stream velocity. At ${\omega}^{\ast}=0$ (without rotation), the flow past the sphere experiences steady axisymmeoy, steady planar-symmetry and unsteady planar-symmetry, respectively, at Re=100, 250 and 300. However, with rotation, the flow becomes planar-symmetric for all the cases investigated and the symmetry plane is orthogonal to the axis of the rotation. The flow is also steady or unsteady depending on both the Reynolds number and the rotational speed, and the vortical structures behind the sphere are significantly modified by the rotation. For example, at Re=300, hairpin vortices completely disappear in the wake at ${\omega}^{\ast}=0.4\;and\;0.6$, and at ${\omega}^{\ast}=1$ vortical structures of a high frequency are newly generated due to the shear layer instability. It is also shown that with increasing rotational speed, the time-averaged drag and lift coefficients increase monotonically.
Experimental study was conducted to investigate the effects of axial forcing on the flame structures near the nozzle exit of non-premixed flame. The most notable observation is that the direction of vortical motions is changed at some ranges, according to the increase of excitation amplitude. Especially, the elongation flame and the phenomenon of In-burning are always occurred when the vortical motion turnabout. In an analysis of the flame/flow visualization by means of direct photography and RMS technique, a plausible explanation can be made that above phenomena are related only to the amplitude of phase average velocity between the instantaneous velocity elements of excited flow.
Flow over a sphere under forced oscillation at Re=300 is simulated for various frequency ratios which are defined as excitation frequency over natural frequency of stationary sphere. The results of oscillating sphere are compared with those of stationary sphere and an oscillating cylinder. Detailed vortical structures, hydrodynamic forces and frequencies of the wake are prescribed as a function of frequency ratio. For oscillating sphere, planar symmetry of the wake is kept and two nearly symmetric hair pin vortices are induced by oscillation for one period of oscillation when the frequency ratio is bigger than 0.5. Modulation phenomenon which can be found in an oscillating cylinder were not seen for an oscillating sphere.

In general, the vertical vibration problems for strength of members and serviceability of building structures are not considered in structural design process, but the prediction of the vertical vibration is very important and essential to structural design process. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of vertical vibration in terms of the transfer of horizontal directions on the rahmen building structures and the shear wall building structures. In order to examine the characteristics of vertical vibration, the modal test and the heel-drop excitation experiments were conducted several times on the two type building structures. The results from the experiments are analyzed and compared with the results. The results of this study suggest that the characteristics of vortical vibration transfer in horizontal way are effected from the fundamental frequency of the slabs and excitation forces and are effected the shear wall on the path of the vibration transfer.
Three-dimensional structures of a vortical flow field and heat transfer characteristics in a partially blocked 7-pin fuel assembly mock-up of sodium-cooled fast reactor have been investigated through a numerical analysis using a commercial computational fluid dynamics code, ANSYS CFX. The simulation with the SST turbulence model agrees well with the experimental data of outlet and cladding wall temperatures. From the analysis on the limiting streamline at the wall, multi-scale vortexes developed in axial direction were found around the blockage. The vortex core has a high cladding wall temperature, and the attachment line has a low cladding wall temperature. The small-scale vortex structures significantly enhance the convective heat transfer because it increases the turbulent mixing and the turbulence kinetic energy. The large-scale vortex structures supply thermal energy near the heated cladding wall surface. It is expected that control of the vortex structures in the fuel assembly plays a significant role in the convective heat transfer enhancement. Furthermore, the blockage plate and grid spacer increase the pressure drop to about 36% compared to the bare case.
