An experimental study is performed to analyze flow structures behind a local suction/blowing in a flat-plate turbulent boundary layer, The local forcing is given to the boundary layer flow by means of a sinusoidally oscillating jet issuing from a thin spanwise slot at the wall. The Reynolds number based on the momentum thickness is about $Re_{\theta}=1700$. The effects of local forcing are scrutinized by altering the forcing frequency $(0.011{\leq}f^+{\leq}0.044)$. The forcing amplitude is fixed at $A_0=0.4$. It is found that a small local forcing reduces the skin friction, and this reduction increases with the forcing frequency. A phase-averaging technique is employed to capture the coherent structures. Velocity signals are decomposed into a periodic part and a fluctuating part. An organized spanwise vortical structure is generated by the local forcing. The larger reduction of skin friction for the higher forcing frequencies is attributed to the diminished adverse effect of the secondary vortex. An investigation of the random fluctuation components reveals that turbulent energy is concentrated near the center of vortical structures.
Laminar flow over a cube near a plane wall is numerically investigated in order to understand the effects of the cube-wall gap on the flow characteristics as well as the drag and lift coefficients. The main focus is placed on the three-dimensional vortical structures and its relation to the lift force applied on the cube. Numerical simulations are performed for the Reynolds numbers between 100 and 300, covering several different flow regimes. Without a wall nearby, the flow at Re=100 is planar symmetric with no vortical structure in the wake. However, when the wall is located close to the cube, a pair of streamwise vortices is induced behind the cube. At Re=250, the wall strengthens the existing streamwise vortices and elongates them in the streamwise direction. As a result, the lift coefficients at Re=100 and 250 increase as the cube-wall gap decreases. On the other hand, without a wall, vortex shedding takes place at Re=300 in the form of a hairpin vortex whose strength changes in time. The head of hairpin vortex or loop vortex, which is closely related to the lift force, seems to disappear due to the nearby wall. Therefore, unlike at Re=100 and 250, the lift coefficient tends to decrease more or less as the cube approaches the wall.
Numerical simulations are conducted for laminar flow past a sphere rotating In the transverse direction, in order to investigate the effect of the rotation on the characteristics of flow over a sphere. The Reynolds numbers considered are Re=100, 250 and 300 based on the free-stream velocity and the sphere diameter, and the rotational speeds are in the range of $0{\leq}{\omega}{\leq}1$, where ${\omega}^{\ast}$ is the maximum velocity on the sphere surface normalized by the free-stream velocity. At ${\omega}^{\ast}=0$ (without rotation), the flow past the sphere experiences steady axisymmeoy, steady planar-symmetry and unsteady planar-symmetry, respectively, at Re=100, 250 and 300. However, with rotation, the flow becomes planar-symmetric for all the cases investigated and the symmetry plane is orthogonal to the axis of the rotation. The flow is also steady or unsteady depending on both the Reynolds number and the rotational speed, and the vortical structures behind the sphere are significantly modified by the rotation. For example, at Re=300, hairpin vortices completely disappear in the wake at ${\omega}^{\ast}=0.4\;and\;0.6$, and at ${\omega}^{\ast}=1$ vortical structures of a high frequency are newly generated due to the shear layer instability. It is also shown that with increasing rotational speed, the time-averaged drag and lift coefficients increase monotonically.
The objective of this work is to study various vortical structures from controlled circular jet such as trifurcating and blooming jets. The numerical simulations of flow from a circular jet are carried out at $Re_D=4300$ based on the jet-exit velocity and jet diameter using large eddy simulation with the dynamic Smagorinsky model in a cylindrical coordinate system. The excitation for the controlled jet is achieved by combining axial and helical excitations. The axial velocity controlled by blowing and suction at the jet exit has several peaks in their cycle with respect to ratio of axial to helical excitations. This active control changes the spreading angle and vortical structures in the downstream region.
The impacts of equivalence ratio on flow structure and flame dynamic in a model gas turbine combustor are investigated using large eddy simulation(LES). Dynamic k-equation model and G-equation flamelet model are employed as LES subgrid model for flow and combustion, respectively. As a result of mean flow field for each equivalence ratio, the increase of equivalence ratio brings about the decrease of swirl intensity through the modification of thermal effect and viscosity, although the same swirl intensity is imposed at inlet. The changes of vortical structure and turbulent intensity etc. near flame surface are occurred consequently. That is, the decrease of equivalence ratio can leads to the increase of heat release fluctuation by the more increased turbulent intensity and fluctuation of recirculation flow. In addition, the effect of inner vortex generated from vortex breakdown on the heat release fluctuation is increased gradually with the decrease of equivalence ratio. Finally, it can be identified that the variations of vortical structure play an important role in combustion instability, even though the small change of equivalence ratio is occurred.
Three major physiological functions of nose can be described as air-conditioning, filtering and smelling. Detailed knowledge of airflow characteristics in nasal cavities is essential to understanding of the physiological and pathological aspects of nasal breathing. In our laboratory, a series of experimental investigations have been conducted on the airflows in normal and abnormal nasal cavity models by means of PIV under both constant and periodic flow conditions. In this work, more specifically experimental and numerical results on the surgically modified inferior turbinate model were presented. With the high resolution CT data and a careful treatment of the model surface under the ENT doctor's advice yielded quite sophisticated cavity models for the PIV experiment. Physiological nature of the airflow was discussed in terms of velocity distribution and vortical structure for constant inspirational flow. Since the inferior and middle turbinate are key determinants of nasal airflow, the turbinectomy obviously altered the main stream direction. This phenomenon may cause local changes in physiological function and the flow resistance.
Experimental study was conducted to investigate the effects of axial forcing on the flame structures near the nozzle exit of non-premixed flame. The most notable observation is that the direction of vortical motions is changed at some ranges, according to the increase of excitation amplitude. Especially, the elongation flame and the phenomenon of In-burning are always occurred when the vortical motion turnabout. In an analysis of the flame/flow visualization by means of direct photography and RMS technique, a plausible explanation can be made that above phenomena are related only to the amplitude of phase average velocity between the instantaneous velocity elements of excited flow.
Flow over a sphere under forced oscillation at Re=300 is simulated for various frequency ratios which are defined as excitation frequency over natural frequency of stationary sphere. The results of oscillating sphere are compared with those of stationary sphere and an oscillating cylinder. Detailed vortical structures, hydrodynamic forces and frequencies of the wake are prescribed as a function of frequency ratio. For oscillating sphere, planar symmetry of the wake is kept and two nearly symmetric hair pin vortices are induced by oscillation for one period of oscillation when the frequency ratio is bigger than 0.5. Modulation phenomenon which can be found in an oscillating cylinder were not seen for an oscillating sphere.
The flow characteristics in a confined slot jet impinging on a flat plate were investigated in low Reynolds number regime (Re$\leq$1,000) by using time-resolved particle image velocimetry technique. The jet Reynolds number was varied from 404 to 1026, where it is presumed that the transient regime exists. It is found that the vortical structures in the shear layer are developed with increasing Reynolds number and that the jet remains steady at the Reynolds number of 404. Vortical structures and their temporal evolution are verified and the results were compared with previous numerical studies.
