  • This study numerically carried out the propeller open water test(POW) by solving Navier-Stokes equations governing the three-dimensional unsteady incompressible viscous flow with the turbulence closure model of the ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ SST model. Numerical simulations are performed at various range of advance ratios. Corresponding to Reynolds numbers of $5.89{\times}105{\sim}6.47{\times}105$ based on free stream velocity and the chord length at 0.7 propeller radius. The present results give a good agreement with those of the experiment. The propeller induced vortical structures have been analyzed by visualizing the resultant vorticity. As the advance ratio increases, the magnitude and length of the resultant vorticity decrease significantly. As the main focus of present study, the numerical model to present the ($r-{\theta}$) plane-averaged resultant vorticity along the streamwise direction for various advance ratios has been suggested.

  • The collective behavior of bacteria plays an important role in biofilm development. In this study, the fluidic properties of biofilms formed in Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) colonies were compared by visualizing 200-nm fluorescent beads that were initially embedded in an agar plate and distributed spontaneously on the upper surface of the growing colonies. We conducted experiments to measure the three-dimensional profile of the E. coli colony using fluorescent microbeads that did not flow in the colony. Vortical flow patterns near the edge of the B. subtilis colony were observed clearly by tracking the movement of the beads in the biofilm of the colony. The present study should be the first step toward determining the effect of fluidic biofilms on the growth and swarming dynamics of bacteria.

  • The mean and RMS velocity field of the respiratory gas flow in tile human airway was studied experimentally by particle image velocimetry(PIV). Some researchers investigated the airflow for the mouth breathing case both experimentally and numerically. But it is very rare to investigate the airflow of nose breathing in a whole airway due to its geometric complexity. We established the procedure to create a transparent rectangular box containing a model of the human airway for PIV measurement by combination of the RP and the curing of clear silicone. We extend this to make a whole airway including nasal cavities, larynx, trachea, and 2 generations of bronchi. The CBC algorithm with window offset (64*64 to 32*32) is used for vector searching in PIV analysis. The phase averaged mean and RMS velocity distributions in Sagittal and coronal planes are obtained for 7 phases in a respiratory period. Some physiologic conjectures are obtained. The main stream went through the backside of larynx and trachea in inspiration and the frontal side in expiration. There exist vortical motions in inspiration, but no prominent one in expiration.

  • In the present study, the flat plate model test method is developed to evaluate the skin friction of the marine coating in the cavitation tunnel. Six-component force balance is used to measure the profile drag of the flat plate and strut. LDV(laser Doppler velocimetry) technique is also employed to evaluate the drag and to figure out the reason of the drag reduction. The flow velocities above the surface can be used to assess the skin friction, combined with direct force measurement. Since the vortical structure in the coherent turbulence structure influences on the skin friction in the high Reynolds number regime, the interaction between the turbulence structure and the surface wall is paying more attention. This sort of thing is important in the passive control of the turbulent boundary layer because the skin friction can't be determined only by wall condition. As complicated flow phenomena exist around a paint film, systematic measurement and analysis are necessary to evaluate the skin friction appropriately.

  • Numerical simulation is conducted to investigate aerodynamic force generation mechanism for the "figure-of-eight" motion of Dipteran fly, Phormia-Regina. Wing trajectory is referred to experimental result, which was observed from the tethered flight under freestream condition. Numerical simulation shows that the lift is mainly generated during downstroke motion and the large amount of thrust is generated abruptly at the end of upstroke motion. In the present work, vortical structure in the wake and the pressure field around the airfoil are examined to understand the generation of lift and thrust. Consequently, the lift generation is related with the leading edge vortex which is developed by an effective angle of attack. And the thrust generation can be explained by vortex pairing in the flow field and by vortex staying in the pressure field.

  • Local heat/mass transfer and friction loss in a square duct roughened with various types of continuous and discrete rib turbulators are investigated. The combined effects of the gap flows of the discrete ribs and the secondary flows are examined for the purpose of the reduction of thermally weak regions and the promotion of the uniformity of heat/mass transfer distributions as well as the ;augmentation of average heat/mass transfer. The rib-to-rib pitch to the rib height ratio (p/e) of 8 and the rib angles of 90° and 60° are selected with e/D$\_$h/=0.08. The vortical structure of the secondary flows induced by the parallel angled arrays are quite distinct from that induced by the cross angled arrays. This distinction influences on heat/mass transfer and friction loss in all the tested cases. The gap flows of the discrete ribs reduce the strength of the secondary flows but promote local turbulence and flow mixing. Consequently, the angled discrete ribs with the small gaps provide a more uniform heat/mass transfer distribution sustaining high average heat/mass transfer.

  • A general combustion characteristics of forcing nonpremixed jet in laminar flow rates have been conducted experimentally to investigate the effect of forcing amplitude with the resonant frequency of fuel tube. There are two patterns of the flame lift-off feature according to the velocity increasing; one has the decreasing values of forcing amplitude on the lift-off occurrence when a fuel exit velocity is increasing, while the other has the increasing values. These mean that there are the different mechanisms in the lift-off stability of forced jet diffusion flame. Especially, the characteristics of attached jet flame regime are concentrically observed with flame lengths, shapes, flow response and velocity profiles at the nozzle exit as the central figure. The notable observations are that the flame enlogation, in-homing flame and the occurrence of a vortical motion turnabout have happened according to the increase of forcing amplitude. It is understood by the velocity measurements and visualization methods that these phenomena have been relevance to an entrainment of surrounding oxygen into the fuel nozzle as the negative part of the fluctuating velocity has begun at the inner part of the fuel nozzle.

  • Fluid-elastic instability and turbulence excitation for an under developing steam generator are investigated numerically. The stability ratio and the amplitude of turbulence excitation are obtained by using the $PIAT^{(R)}$ (program for integrity assessment of steam generator tube) code from the information on the thermal-hydraulic data of the steam generator. The aspect ratio, the ratio between the height of U-tube from the upper most tube support Plate (h) and the width of two vertical portion of U-tube (w), is defined for geometric parameter study. Several aspect ratios with relocation of tube support plates are adopted to study the effects on the mode shapes and characteristics of flow-induced vibration. When the aspect ratio exceeds value of 1, most of the mode shapes at low frequency are generated at the top of U-tube. It makes very high value of the stability ratio and the amplitude of turbulent excitation as well. We can consider that the local mode shape at the upper side of U-tube will develop the wear phenomena between the tube and the anti-nitration bars such as vortical, horizontal, and diagonal strips. It turns out that the aspect ratio reveals very important parameter for the design stage of the steam generator. The appropriate value of the aspect ratio should be specified and applied.

  • Vortical etching experiments of ($SrBi_2Ta_2O_9$)/Si thin films have been performed by using the inductively coupled plasma reactive ion etching (ICP-ME) apparatus. The purposes of these experiments are to get the effective area of vertical surface. Because this technology is very important to get good qualities of ferroelectric gate structure, capacitor and the minimum parasitic effects related to the excellent performances of the FRAM (Ferroelectric Random Access Memory) device. The reacting gases were Ar and $Cl_2$gases, and various $Ar/C1_2$flow ratios were used. The etching experiments were carried out at various RF powers such as 700, 700, 500W and at various DC powers such as 200, 150, 100, 50W, respectively. The maximum etch rate of $SrBi_2Ta_2O_9$/Si thin films was 1050 A/min at the $Ar/C1_2$ gas ratio of 20/16, RF power of 700 W and DC power of 200 W. From the SEM (scanning electron microscopy) image of the SBT thin films, the wall angle was as good as about $82^{\circ}$.

  • A computational simulation for a nonslender BWB UCAV configuration with rounded leading edge and span of 1.0m was performed to analyze its aerodynamic characteristics. The freestream is 50m/s over -4 to 26 degree A.o.A.s. Reynolds number based on the mean chord length is $1.25{\times}10^6$. 3D multi block hexahedral grids are used which allow good grid quality and ease to capture boundary layer. ${\gamma}-Re_{\theta}$ model as well as $k-{\omega}$ SST model is employed to assess the effect of transition for flow behavior. Drag and lift of the UCAV were well predicted while $C_M$ is under predicted at high angle of attacks and influenced by the turbulence models strongly. After assessing pressure distribution, skin friction lines and velocity field around the UCAV configuration, it was found that transition effect should be considered to enhance the prediction of aerodynamic behavior by a vortical flowfield.
