This paper describes the design of a full-spade twisted rudder section by using the genetic algorithm based on VLM(Vortex Lattice Method) and panel method. The developed propeller- rudder analysis program has been validated by comparing with experimental data. The developed code has been used for the design of a twisted full-spade rudder especially for finding out optimum section. The optimization has been firstly carried out by the genetic algorithm. The more detail variation of a rudder section has been also conducted by changing section profile in more detail to confirm the most optimum section profile. The developed new twisted rudder has been compared with existing twisted rudder by cavitation testing in the cavitation tunnel at MOERI. It is concluded that the developed twisted rudder has a lower cavity in comparison with existing twisted rudder. The verification of efficiency gain is expected to be carried out through self-propulsion tests in the near future.

This paper presents some examples of active control of flow-induced vibration using piezoelectric actuators. The flutter phenomenon, which is the dynamic instability of structure due to mutual interaction among inertia, stiffness, and aerodynamic forces, may cause catastrophic structural failure, and therefore the active flutter suppression is one of the main objectives of the aeroelastic control. Active flutter control has been numerically and experimentally studied for swept-back lifting surfaces using piezoelectric actuation. A finite element method, a panel aerodynamic method, and the minimum state space realization are involved in the development of the governing equation, which is efficiently used for the analysis of the system and design of control laws with modern control framework. The active control suppressed flow-induced vibrations and extended the flutter speed around by 10%. Another representative flow-induced vibration phenomenon is the oscillation of blunt bodies due to the vortex shedding. In general, it is quite difficult to set up the numerical model because of the strong non-linearity of the vortex shedding structure. Therefore, we applied adaptive positive position feedback controller, which requires no pre-determined model of the plant, and successfully suppressed the flow-induced vibration.
This paper describes the procedure to predict steady and unsteady performances of a contrarotating propeller(CRP) by a mixed formulation of the boundary value problem(BVP) far the flow around a CRP. The blade BVP is treated by a classical vortex lattice method, whereas the hub BVP is solved by a potential-based panel method. Blades and trailing wakes are represented by a vortex and/or source lattice system, and hubs are represented by normal dipole and source distributions. Both forward and aft propellers are solved simultaneously, thus treating the interaction effect without iteration. The unsteady performance is computed directly in time domain. The new numerical procedure requires a large amount of storage and computing time, which is however no longer a limit in a modern computer system. Sample computations show that the steady performance compares very well with the experiments. The predicted unsteady behavior shows that the dominant harmonics of the total forces are multiples of not only the number of blades of the forward and aft propellers but also the product of both blade numbers. The magnitude of the latter harmonics, present also in uniform oncoming flow, may reach abort 50% of the mean torque for the aft propeller, which in turn may cause a serious vibration problem in the complicated contrarotating shafting system.

In the paper the effect of a stern-plate attached to a ship was taken into account. The relationship between the trim angle of a ship and the wave-resistance coefficient induced by the a stern-plate was studied using the potential flow analysis method. Numerical algorithm was described using the panel method and the vortex lattice method(VLM) to simulate the flow phenomena around a ship. The non-linearity of the free surface boundary conditions were considered using the iterative method and the IGE-GMRES(Incomplete Gaussian Elimination-The Generalized Minimal RESidual) algorithm was adopted to solve the linear equation at each iterative step. Numerical calculations were carried out to investigate the validity of the adopted algorithm using KCS(KRISO 3600 TEU Container) hull. Possible cases for attachment of the plate were checked. The results showed that the numerical algorithm could be physically appropriate.

This work experimentally and numerically analyzes the flow configurations and the dynamic wind loads on panels of rectangular L/h 5:1 cross section mounted on a structural frame of rectangular bars of L/h 0.5:1, corresponding to a radar structure. The fluid dynamic interaction between panels and frame wakes imposes dynamic loads on the panels, with particular frequencies and Strouhal numbers, different from those of isolated elements. The numerical scheme is validated by comparison with mean forces and velocity spectra of a panel wake obtained by wind tunnel tests. The flow configuration is analyzed through images of the numerical simulations. For a large number of panels, as in the radar array, their wakes couple in either phase or counter-phase configurations, changing the resultant forces on each panel. Instantaneous normal and tangential force coefficients are reported; their spectra show two distinct peaks, caused by the interaction of the wakes. Finally, a scaled model of a rectangular structure comprised of panels and frame elements is tested in the boundary layer wind tunnel in order to determine the influence of the velocity variation with height and the three-dimensionality of the bulk flow around the structure. Results show that the unsteady aerodynamic loads, being strongly influenced by the vortex shedding of the supporting elements and by the global 3-D geometry of the array, differ considerably on a panel in this array from loads acting on an isolated panel, not only in magnitude, but also in frequency.

The MH-75 propeller for the MAV propulsion is designed using a free vortex design method which considers design parameters such as the hub-tip ratio, the twist angle distribution, the maximum camber location and the chord length of the propeller blade. Aerodynamic characteristics of the MH-75 propeller are predicted by changing the flight speed using the frequency domain panel method. And, the thrust characteristics of the MH-75 propeller are measured using the balance system of the subsonic wind tunnel for the validation of numerical results. The performance characteristics of the MH-75 propeller satisfied with design requirements. Numerical results of the MH-75, which are predicted by the frequency domain panel method, are more agree with experimental results compare with XFOIL.
A program to design an axial flow fan, analyze the performance and predict the noise was developed. In order to develop the low noise fan, that program is compulsory. This software is composed of three parts : the geometric design module, the performance analysis module, the fan noise prediction module. In order to analyze the performance, three dimensional vortex panel method is used. The unsteady flow field was analyzed by time-marching free wake method. The unsteady force data is then used in predicting the noise. Farassat's equation is used to predict the noise of fan.

In this paper, a separating system for used CRT recycling is presented. Depend on manufacturer CRTs has small differences in dimension for the same model, but the dimensions of the panel are nearly same. To simplifying configuration of the system, we developed CRT fixing pallets for every model of CRT. The height of cutting position for every model of CRT will be same. The cutting machine has two rotating arm and use metal-bond type diamond cutting wheel. Instead of water, two vortex tube type air-coolers are used for the cooling of cutter. Workers in recycling factory are generally old people. Therefore, control program should be easy to use and operate. Thus we developed GUI with very simple interface.
The purpose of this study is to develop a method for predicting the aerodynamic performance of the subsonic airfoils in the 2-dimensional, steady and viscous flow. For this study, the airfoil geometry is specified by adopting the longest chord line system and by considering local surface curvature. In case of the inviscid-incompressible flow, the analysis is accomplished by the linearly varying strength vortex panel method and the Karman-Tsien correction law is applied for the inviscid-compressible flow analysis. The Goradia's integral method and the Truckenbrodt integral method are adopted for the boundary layer analysis of the laminar flow and the turbulent flow respectively. Viscous and inviscid solutions are converged by the Lockheed iterative calculating method using the equivalent airfoil geometry. And the analysis of the seperated flow is performed using the Dvorak and Maskew's method as the basic method. The wake effect is also considered and its geometry expressed by the formula of Summey & Smith when no seperation occurs. A computational efficiency is verified by the comparison of the computational results with experimental data and by the shorter execution time.

A numerical study on the propulsive characteristics of a biomimetic foil is done by developing an unsteady linearly-varying strength vortex method. A biomimetic foil is represented as a deforming foil with a tail fin. Present method is verified by comparing the simulated results with results using finite element and finite volume methods. A new boundary condition is imposed by considering the relative rotational velocity, which has not been included in the previous published literature. It is found that the undulation amplitude increases the thrust while maximum thickness is stepping down the thrust. It is also shown that there exists an optimal frequency for maximum thrust generation. It is believed that present results can be used in the investigation of the propulsive characteristics of the biomimetic deforming foil.
