  • During feeding oxidizer to the engine, vortices are occurred at lower dome of oxidizer tank inside by various working environments and external forces for liquid propellant feeding system of space launch vehicle. To eliminate the vortices or swirls Anti-Vortex Devices(AVD) shall be installed at inside lower oxidizer tank. Using the numerical analysis, we have confirmed the performance of AVD and analyzed the mass flow rate by feeding time and magnitudes of swirls on the free surface of oxidizer or exit surface according to the AVD number and length. Then we could derive the optimal design of the AVD number and length.

  • In this work, optimization of blade shape for the improvement of mixture formation and vortex of intake port was performed by numerically, and the combustion performance of CI engine with optimized blade shape was investigated. To achieve this, 3 types of blade shape were studied under the different air flow mass conditions and the numerical results were investigated in terms of humidification water, moisture concentration, and velocity distributions. Evaporated liquid mass was also compared under various test conditions to reveal the turbulent intensity in an intake port. It was observed that the optimized blade shape can improve the humidification water, moisture concentration, and velocity distributions of intake port inside. The evaporated liquid mass was also increased under the conditions with blade. Especially, low NOx emissions was observed with optimized blade condition.

  • Although the motion of the three-phase contact line on a solid substrate has been extensively studied thus far, the understanding of the dynamics of the contact line of liquid/liquid/gas phases is far from complete. Here we deposit a drop of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) on water and HFE-7100 whose free surfaces are exposed to air to observe the flow field around the contact line. By combining the shadowgraph and high-speed imaging techniques, we find that vortices are spontaneously generated at the contact line, which grow in size with time. The flow is attributed to the Marangoni stress that pulls a liquid of lower-surface tension toward a liquid surface having a higher surface tension. However, it is not still clear why the entrained lower-surface-tension liquid should whirl rapidly beneath the contact line. We also visualize the flow by the particle image velocimetry (PIV) to find out that the rotational velocity reaches the order of 1 mm/s near the free surface.

  • Vertices terminating at free surface have been investigated extensively. Most of investigations, however, are focused on surface parallel vortices and little has been known about surface normal vortex or columnar vortex. Visualized experimental results utilizing LIF technique are discussed fur the purpose of characterization of columnar vortex interacting with a clean and a contaminated free surfaces and a solid body interface in the present investigation. The results reveal that surface tension changes due to surface contamination although bulk viscosity remains constant and eventually the behavior of a columnar vortex interacting with a contaminated free surface and a solid body interface are totally different from the clean free surface case.

  • This paper describes the results of an experimental investigation of the flow characteristics and the heat transfer rate on a surface by interaction of a pair of vortices. The test facility consists of a boundary-layer wind tunnel with a vortex introduced into the flow by half-delta wings(vortex generators) protruding from the surface. In order to control the strength of the two longitudinal vortices, the angles of attack of the vortex generators are varied from 20 degree to 45 degree, but spacings between the vortex generators are fixed to 4 cm. The 3-dimensional mean velocity downstream of the vortex generators is measured by a five-hole pressure probe, and the hue-capturing method using the thermochromatic liquid crystals has been used to provide the local distribution of the heat transfer coefficient. By using the method mentioned above, the following conclusions are obtained from the present experiment. The boundary layer is thinned in the regions where the secondary flow is directed toward the wall and thickened where it is directed away from the wall. The peak augmentation of the local heat transfer coefficient occurs in the downwash region near the point of minimum boundary-layer thickness. Streamwise distributions of averaged Stanton number on the measurement planes show very similar trends for all the cases(${\beta}=20^{circ},\;30^{\circ}\;and\;45^{\circ}$).

  • The flow characteristics and the heat transfer rate on a surface by interaction of a pair of vortices were studied experimentally. The test facility consisted of a boundary-layer wind tunnel with a vortex introduced into the flow by half-delta winglet protruding from the surface. In order to control the strength of the longitudinal vortices, the angles of attack of the vortex generators were varied from $\pm20\;degree\;to\;\pm45$ degree, but spacings between the vortex generators were fixed to 4 cm. The 3-dimensional mean velocity measurements were made using a five-hole pressure probe. Heat transfer measurements were made using the thermochromatic liquid to provide the local distribution of the heat transfer coefficient. • A hybrid model consisting of a modified TAB (Taylor Analogy Breakup) model and DVM (Discrete Vortex Method) is proposed for numerical analysis of the evaporating spray phenomena in diesel engines. The simulation process of the hybrid model is divided into three steps. First, the droplet breakup of injected fuel is analyzed by using the modified TAB model. Second, spray evaporation is calculated based on the theory of Siebers'liquid length. The liquid length analysis of injected fuel is used to integrate the modified TAB model and DVM. Lastly, both ambient gas flow and inner vortex flow of injected fuel are analyzed by using DVM. An experiment with an evaporative free spray at the early stage of its injection was conducted under in-cylinder like conditions to examine an accuracy of the present hybrid model. The calculated results of the gas jet flow by DVM agree well with the experimental results. The calculated and experimental results all confirm that the ambient gas flow dominates the downstream diesel spray flow.

  • The present study is concerned with the heat transfer enhancement associated with a symmetrical or asymmetrical horseshoe vortex in front of and around the circular cylinder centered between the side walls of a wind tunnel. The static pressure measurements and the flow visualization in front of and around cylinders have been performed to determine the existence of horseshoe vortex. The hue-capturing method using the thermochromatic liquid crystals with great spatial resolution was used to obtain the local information of the endwall heat transfer coefficients. In case of one cylinder, the convective heat transfer coefficients of the region where the horseshoe vortex exists are larger than those of any other region. In case of two cylinders with tandem arrangement, the heat transfer rate of gap spacing (d/D= 1.5) is higher than that of gap spacings (d/D=2.0 or 2.5).

  • In this paper we present the numerical results of the behavior of the horizontal vortex generated by ejecting a liquid vertically upward from an orifice into the bulk fluid above the orifice. The numerical calculation has been performed for the axi-symmetric Navier-Stokes equation. A simple flow-visualization experiment was also conducted to qualitatively verify the numerical solutions. Three cases of the flow configurations studied in this paper are; firstly, the vortex was generated without any background rotation, secondly, the vortex was made under a full background rotation, and thirdly, the vortex was made during the spin-up process such that only the region adjacent to the side wall was set into motion viewed in the inertial frame of reference. It was shown that the swirl flow at the inlet boundary affects considerably the formation and development of the vortex for the second case. In the third case, it was remarkable to see that the vortex cannot penetrate into the region near to the side wall of the tank, because of the strong swirl flow and corresponding high pressure gradient in the region.

  • Our experimental research focuses on manipulating pinning deflects to alter the phase diagram of vortex matter, creating new vortex phases. Vortex matter offers a unique opportunity for creating and studying these novel phase transitions through precise control of thermal, pinning and elastic energies. The vortex melting transition in untwinned YB $a_2$C $u_3$ $O_{7-}$ $\delta$/ crystals is investigated in the presence of disorder induced by particle irradiation. We focus on the low disorder regime, where a glassy state and a lattice state can be realized in the same phase diagram. We follow the evolution of the first order vortex melting transition line into a continuous transition line as disorder is increased by irradiation. The transformation is marked by an upward shift in the lower critical point on the melting line. With columnar deflects induced by heavy ion irradiation, we find a second order Bose glass transition line separating the vortex liquid from a Bose glass below the lower critical point. Furthermore, we find an upper threshold of columnar defect concentration beyond which the lower critical point and the first order melting line disappear together. With point deflect clusters induced by proton irradiation, we find evidence for a continuous thermodynamic transition below the lower critical point..
