The three-dimensional flows in the Weis-Fogh mechanism are studied by flow visualization and numerical simulation by the discrete vortex method. In this mechanism, two wings open, touching their trailing edges (fling), and rotate in opposite directions in the horizontal plane. The structure of the vortex systems shed from the wings is very complicated and their effects on the forces on the wings have not yet been clarified. The discrete vortex method, especially the vortex stick method, is employed to investigate the vortex structure in the wake of the two wings. The wings are represented by lattice vortices, and the shed vortices are expressed by discrete three-dimensional vortex sticks. The vortex distributions and the velocity field are calculated. The pressure is estimated by the Bernoulli equation, and the lift on the wing are also obtained.
Numerical and experimental studies were performed to investigate the aerodynamic performance of a thin wing in close vicinity to the ground. The vortex lattice method (VLM) was utilized to simulate the wing in ground (WIG) effect, which included freely deforming wake elements. The numerical results acquired through the VLM were compared to the experimental results. The experiment entailed varying the ground clearance using the DHMTU (Department of Hydromechanics of the Marine Technical University of Saint Petersburg) wing and the WIG craft model in the wind tunnel. The aero-dynamic influence of the design parameters, such as angles of attack, aspect ratios, taper ratios, and sweep angles were studied and compared between the numerical and experimental results associated with the WIG craft. Both numerical and experimental results suggested that the endplate augments the WIG effect for a small ground clearance. In addition, the vortex lattice method simulated the wake deformation following the wing in the influence of the ground effect.
A Counter-rotating wind turbine is one of the new concepts that are proposed to increase the performance of a wind turbine. It has two rotors rotating in the same axis, and it is known that its power coefficient can reach to 0.64 in the ideal case. While the BEMT is widely used to analyze the aerodynamic performance of wind turbines, the analysis of the counter-rotating wind turbine by using it is limited due to the aerodynamic interaction between the two rotors. In this study, the vortex lattice method is used to consider the effect of the front rotor on the rear rotor of the counter-rotating wind turbine and calculate the aerodynamic performance of it. The power and thrust sharing in the two rotors of the counter-rotating wind turbine are predicted and the total power and thrust are compared with that of a single rotor. Moreover, the wake convection and expansion rate is also compared with that of a single rotor.
Direct simulations of aerodynamic sound, especially sound emitted by rapidly rotating elliptic cylinder by the finite difference lattice Boltzmann method (FDLBM). Effect of pile-fabrics for noise reduction is also studied by the finite volume LBM (FVLBM) using an unstructured grid. Second order time integration and third order upwind scheme are shown to be enough for these simulations. Sound sources are detected to be doublets for both cases. For the elliptic cylinder, the doublet is generated in the interaction between the vortex and the edge. For the circular cylinders, they are generated synchronizing with the Karman vortex street, and it is also shown that the pile-fabrics covering the surface of the cylinder reduces the strength of the source.

In order to consider the effect of Karman vortex for mixing, mixing indices are calculated for 4 models of micro channel flows driven from the combinations of a circular cylinder and a oscillating stirrer. And their results are compared to that of a simple straight micro channel flow(model I). The mixing rate is improved 5.5 times by Karman vortex (model II) and 11.0 times by the stirrer(model III) respectively. In case of successive mixing by the cylinder and the stirrer(model IV), $27\%$ of shortening the channel length for the complete mixing as well as 1.37 times improvement of mixing efficiency then model III. And then, variation of mixing indices are much stable comparing with the others. Thus, it is found that the Karman vortex plays a good role as a pre-mixing method. The D2Q9 Lattice Boltzmann methods are used.
In this study, hydrodynamic performance of a 400 mm diameter horizontal axis marine current turbine model was tested in a cavitation tunnel with 1.21 m x 0.8 m cross-section for over a range of tip speed ratios. Torque and thrust data, as well as cavitation visualizations, for certain operating conditions were acquired. Experimental results indicated that the turbine can be exposed to significant amount of sheet and cloud cavitation over the blades along with vortex cavitation at the blade tips. Inception and distribution of cavitation along the blades of the model turbine were then modelled numerically for design operating conditions using a vortex lattice method. The method was also applied to a turbine tested previously and obtained results were compared with the data available. The comparison between simulation results and experimental data showed a slight difference in terms of span-wise extent of the cavitation region. The cloud and tip vortex cavity observed in experiments cannot be modelled due to the fact that the VLM lacks the ability to predict such types of cavitation. Notwithstanding, the use of such prediction methods can provide a reasonably accurate approach to estimate, therefore take the hydrodynamic effects of cavitation into account in design and analysis of marine current turbines.

In this study, aeroacoustic characteristics of combined fan are investigated and noise was reduced by applying Serrated Trailing Edge which is known as the method to reduce fan noises. Unsteady CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis was carried out using Lattice Boltzmann Method(LBM) to figure out the combined fan's aeroacoustics and experimental results was used to verify simulation results. Results show that different BPFs are generated at the each inner fan and outer fan on the different frequency while Blade Passing Frequency(BPF) of general fans is constant on the entire frequency range. Boundary vortex and vortex shedding are suppressed or dispersed by applying the Serrated Trailing Edge to the inner fan. Furthermore, broadband noise and fan's torque are reduced.

This paper presents comparative results of configuration modeling and aerodynamic analysis to single-engine airplanes such as C-172, SR-20, and DA40NG. The software OpenVSP was used as an airplane configuration modeling tool. OpenVSP can provide the fastest method to get three-dimensional aircraft configuration from given basic data and drawings of aircraft. Parametric design input in OpenVSP, from given aircraft geometric parameters, was applied to small airplanes mentioned. New aircraft models in this study were reversely designed to coincide with the publicly obtained dimensions of the original aircraft. The basic aerodynamic analysis of newly designed modeling aircraft was performed by the vortex lattice method. Results are shown that the similarity of aerodynamic data obtained except for the lack of DA40NG. In conclusion, the modeling process applied to this work is valuable to obtain conceptual design insight in the reverse design from the small airplanes currently in use for flight training.

Immersed boundary method (IBM) is the most effective method to overcome the disadvantage of LBM (Lattice Boltzmann Method) related to the limitation of the grid shape. IBM also make LBM possible to simulate flow over complex shape of obstacle without any treatment on the curved boundary. In the research, IBLBM was used to perform LBM simulation of a flow over a moving circular cylinder to determine the flow feature and aerodynamics characteristic of the cylinder. To ascertain the applicability of IBLBM on the moving obstacle near the wall, it was first simulated for the case of the flow over a fixed circular cylinder in a channel and the results were compared against the solution of moving cylinder in the channel using IBLBM. The simulations were performed in a moderate range of Reynolds number at each moving cylinder to identify the flow feature and aerodynamic characteristics of circular cylinder in a channel. The drag and lift coefficients of the cylinder were calculated from the simulation results. We have numerically confirmed that the critical Reynolds number for vortex shedding is Re=50 and the result is the same as the case of fixed cylinder. As the cylinder approaching to a wall (${\gamma}<2.5$), the 2nd vortex is developed by interacting with the wall boundary-layer vorticity. When the cylinder is very closed to the wall, ${\gamma}<0.6$, the cylinder acts like blockage to block the flow between the cylinder and wall so that the vortex developed on the upper cylinder elongated and time averaged lifting and drag coefficients abruptly increase.
